Are you guys really suggesting that the sleeping pill that was the original version has more passion than Agalloch's version? The original might have atmosphere... a monotonous atmosphere, but an atmosphere nonetheless... that's much better than the progression Agalloch gave to the track. I really like how Sol Invictus pacing when doing the "Summer is a'coming, arise, arise" part makes it awkward and dull. Sol Invictus does have good tracks, but I don't think their version of Kneel To The Cross is very good. Agalloch gave it emotion and atmosphere. Which Sol Invictus lacked...

I've always thought that Agalloch's vocalist had a sort of youthful-sounding charm. He's technically more proficient than Wakeford, and while I wouldn't call him great or anything, I like him. And as someone who likes both songs, I have to disagree about it being sucked dry of emotion; I think Agalloch's cover gave it a certain energy which made it a lot more powerful and spooky in comparison to the rather earthy and solemn original

Regardless, as far as content goes:

I'm a huge fan of Blind Guardian's cover of Queen's Spread Your Wings, and as much as I love freddie mercury, I think BG's guitar work raises them up higher than the original. All of Priest's early covers are absolutely fantastic as well and manage to be high points on the album they're present on rather than just throwaway filler like many covers end up being. I'm especially partial to Better By You, Better Than Me

Especially in Agalloch's version, the intro is unbearably boring - in the original, it functions as a buiild-up to the actual song. Agalloch's slower tempo and anesthetic performance make it clearly inferior to the original. The song is about the atmosphere, and Agalloch misses it.

There is an actual progression to the intro in the version by Agalloch. I will admit that I find the intro to be a bit too long and it does tend to drag for a little too long. But it's the same for Sol Invictus' track, really.

No.

Not big on Nevermore but Sound of Silence is pretty good. I actually only found out it was a cover many years after I first heard it.
I also like Megadeth's 'These Boots'. It's the type of song early Megadeth and Mustaine's voice suits well.
Oh yes, and 'White Rabbit' by In The Woods.

Vader are the fucking masters of covers, they rip through Possessed's 'Death metal' and Venom's 'Black metal' as well, making them much heavier and faster than the originals.

For me it would be Dimmu Borgir - Metal Heart and Satyricon - I got erection.
I just feel like these versions have more power in them.

Sunn O)))'s cover of Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls, titled 'FWTBT'.

It's certainly heavier than Metallica, the term 'better' could be debated however.

Evocation's cover of But Life Goes On is actually one i find surpasses Entombed's version by miles.

I decided to go check those Vader covers out and the Black Metal cover is good but the Death Metal cover totally blows, the drums sound like shit, vocals completely lack emotion and the guitar tone isnt any better either.

Raining Blood cover sounded pretty good to me but I wouldnt exactly call it better than the original

Haha! Fantastic! I didn't even knew they made such a cover. Thanks for sharing.

It does feel kind of weird to my ears. Every version by Mayhem is better than this one, IMO.

Cirith Ungol's cover of Arthur Brown's Fire completely kills the original, in fact the original is one of the most boring songs I've ever heard.

Slottet I Det Fjerne by Gorgoroth totally blows your mind. This version is way darker and chaotic. Coughing vocals, playing with feedback... This cover is a masterpiece.

Spoiler: show

Going to have to say that I really enjoy Liege Lord's version of "Kill the King" much more than Heathen's. But not more than Rainbow's...because...well, that's blasphemous!

I quite like it. I'm not as put off by the chugging as some others are, and Piotr doing the song entirely in half-singing/half-spoken word was an interesting choice.

If we're gonna talk bad covers of Freezing Moon, though, Fleurety's "wins" that debate.

I can really get into a good cover song especially if there's something different done with the presentation.

Here's some that I find more amusing than the original version for various reasons:

City of Fire - Veteran of the Psychic Wars
Crash - Smoke on the Water
Gorefest - Autobahn
Jeff Walker und Die Fluffers - pretty much the entire damn album
Sentenced - House of the Rising Sun
Sepultura - Orgasmatron
Sepultura - The Hunt
SYL - Room 429
Vader - Troops of Tomorrow

Some others that are definitely amusing even if they don't necessarily manage to top the original version:

Amon Amarth - Balls to the Wall
Apostle of Solitude - Where Eagles Dare
Megadeth - Problems
Motorhead - God Save The Queen

Absu - Deathcrush [Mayhem]
Behemoth - Carnage [Mayhem]
Monstrosity - Angel Of Death [Slayer]
Angel Dust - Temple Of The King [Rainbow]
Dissection - The Anti Christ [Slayer]
Angelcorpse - Pleasure To Kill [Slayer]
Cradle Of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name [Iron Maiden]
Bewitched - Let The Blood Run Red [Thor]

Amon Amarth - Balls to the wall & War Machine
Dark Tranquillity - My Friend of Misery
Pain - Elenor Rigby
Hypocrisy - Black Metal

& Who could forget Ten Masked Men - Sexbomb, Blue, Livin Da vidaloca & Eye of the Tiger!!

I think Chelsea Wolfe's cover of Black Spell of Destruction is absolutely great. Everything about the song sounds "off" in exactly the right way, it's got a fantastic atmosphere. The original was great, but I find myself listening to this cover more often.

It's best live, notably on Live Gothic where the band gives it a lot more energy than whatever album the cover first showed up on, alongside Snowy Shaw's deliciously over-the-top vocals.

I also really enjoy Rotting Christ's cover of Lucifer over London, over the Current 93 version. The latter isn't bad at all, but the reverb-drenched guitars and keyboards in the RC version give it an even more ominous, majestic feel than the original. One of my favorite "get pumped up songs" these days.

I'm a huge fan of Agent Steel's cover of Judas Priest's The Ripper, Saxon's cover of Sweet's Set Me Free. I think both are far better than the original versions

Dude, learn what forums are for and why one should use search instead of creating new topics.

New covers are made all the time, there is absolutely no reason for this topic to be closed at any point. Kapish?

I was using forums when you were a twinkle in your momma's eye, son. I don't disapprove of necro-ing at all, in fact it amuses me when people get het up about it. I was just pointing out the massive gap (eight years, almost to the day).

Personally, I think Metallica's cover of "Astronomy" is one of the best cover songs I've heard. I could probably list dozens more, but it would just turn into a list thread.

One of the main reason's I love Metallica's version of Astronomy is because I think it's fascinating to hear James sing that song, lyrically, since he hardly ever writes in that "story" way.

Are you sure about that, kiddo? Judging by the nonsense you write and "your mamma" kind of talk, you're either still young, or one of these old kids that grew old but never matured mentally.

Old enough to keep it classy in the face of some weird, unwarranted tantrum.

If we're talking about covers of Metal songs, then here goes:

I'm not a big Black Sabbath fan, so I enjoy covers of their songs, such as :
Megadeth - Paranoid
Sepultura - Symptom of the Universe
Metallica - Sabbra Cadabra
Megadeth - Never Say Die

Metallica - Blitzkrieg (Blitzkrieg)
Metallica - Am I Evil (Diamond Head)
Heathen - Kill The King (Rainbow)
Savage Messiah - Be Quick or be Dead (Iron Maiden)
Powerwolf - Conquistadors (Running Wild)
Sepultura - Piranha (Exodus) (note: I don't like it more than the original, but it's about equal)
Arch Enemy - Kill With Power (Manowar)

Apologies.

It's a perfectly legit thread, don't get me wrong. For what it's worth, I've always preferred GnR's Live And Let Die to the Wings version.
