Pacific Rim 8.5 out of 10.

Yes, this movie is simple in it's story and it has flaws.......but I don't give a shit. This movie made me feel like a 10 year old watching a brand new Godzilla film. The monster designes are truly unique, amazing and alien, yet still familiar. The giant robots are unique yet somehow not completly unrealistic, although some moments are just beyond believable, but fuck it it's a giant robot. Acting ranges from pretty good to OK, some actors are one note, but I forgive it because they clearly know what movie their in and are just having fun. Other's are doing a better job and trying to make it more. And then theirs Ron Fucking Pearlman, who just steals the show and is just hilarious.

See this movie, it's been projected that it might struggle at the box office, which is truly sad. It's orriginal, it's going off old and less used items like giant monsters and anime/manga, it's soul goal it is to entertain, and it succeeds. This is a promised fun time.

Once again I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of low budget horror you guys watch. Earlier I asked if anyone had seen American Mary and I got an answer within the hour, and now I find out there are actually two other people who have seen Tamara?! Wow!

For the record, I fall into the camp that feels that while Tamara isn't great, it's substantially less terrible than a lot of similar movies. In many slashers I don't care about any of the characters one way or the other, but in Tamara I truly hated the two main high school douchebag guys. So the fact that I was on board with at least part of Mrs. Channing Tatum's revenge plan kept me emotionally invested. I also liked that the methods of revenge were usually tailored to the specific victim.

Watching 'Life and Death of a Porno Band'. I liked 'A Serbian Film', so I hope this one will like me too.

Just saw this last night, it was fun as hell. Tons of shlocky fun action, great spectacle, yet it is not at all in the same league as those shitty Michael Bay Transformers movies. It actually has good characters and good writing. The monster designs were indeed awesome, as expected from acclaimed sci-fi/fantasy artist Wayne Barlowe. I've been a big fan of his for nearly 20 years now.

Pacific Rim - 4.5/5

Just a movie that gets it done right. The action scenes are the best all year - big and addictive, with great, inventive designs and a splash of vivid, intense color to make everything even more surreal and over the top. The writing is very good and just gives you the bare essentials of a good story...guy called back to a dangerous mission he once gave up, girl with a tragic past facing her demons - these things should be cliche by now, but Pacific Rim plays it so earnestly and without any kind of pretension. There are some really good humorous moments too, far better than the sophomoric nonsense of most movies like this. Everything about this is fast paced and grandiose. There's nothing you haven't seen before except a surprising amount of quality, plus the superb visuals. The music is dramatic, the action scenes will shake your bones and the whole thing is like being caught up in a hurricane. But unlike a lot of newer films, director Guillermo del Toro does not make this simply into a big roller coaster ride - it feels like a real movie, with excellent cinematography and great pacing. So many blockbusters now eschew those elements for a sense of forward-momentum, not really stopping to let the audience appreciate the craftwork of how the film was made and the story written. Pacific Rim does not fall into those sins and doubly delivers the most enjoyable action movie of the year. From del Toro especially, this is the kind of quality we've been missing in his work for years. It's not as erudite as Pan's Labyrinth, but it's equally good in other ways. At two hours and 20 minutes I still felt this was too short. Go see it; essential.

How "del Toro-y" is Pacific Rim in style and execution? I've hated everything del Toro has ever made (especially Pan's Labyrinth and especially THE SPINE OF THE DEVIL, which I would rate something like a 0.5/10 and 0/10, respectively), but the trailers so far have shown Pacific Rim to be more of the retarded Emmerich/Berg/Sommers variety of action movie (replete with Crispin's Day speeches, trailer-ready one liners and shoehorned love-interests with about as much chemistry as homeopathy) which I can passively enjoy, rather than the glacially paced, pseudo-intellectual Michael-Bay-in-Ingmar-Bergman's-clothing del Toro is known and (depressingly) loved for, which I enjoy about as much as a Glenn Beck in a full spread for Playgirl.

Can anyone confirm or deny the style change?

Finally got around to checking out V/H/S last night with my wife. Not as bad as I expected it to be, honestly. As much as I hate the whole "lets carry a camera around and shake the shit out of everything until the viewer gets dizzy" bullshit that they are doing these days, it was all together a decent film. Not amazing or brilliant but most definitely decent. To me, it was sort of one of those old Tales From The Creep type shows except it wasn't six different stories, just stories all intertwined together.

Overall rating - 6.5/10

Pacific Rim was beaten at the box office by Grown Ups 2. The former grossed only $38.3 million, while the latter grossed $42.5 million.

It's official: Adam Sandler's career will not fucking die.

Grown Ups 2 also probably cost significantly less to make. As long as he makes money doing this utter, PG-13 inoffensive comedy drivel, his movies will keep being made. I saw the trailer and it looks like the most Adam Sandler of Adam Sandler movies. As I was watching it, that South Park voice came in my head. ADAM SANDLER IS ALL GROWN UP! BUT HE'S ABOUT TO FIND OUT, GROWING UP, IS HARDER THAN IT LOOKS! The fucking thing is replete with close up shots of silly faces. UGH.

From what I've read, it's literally just one gross out gag after another with almost nothing in the way of plot to connect them. In particular, the very first scene of the movie is a CGI deer pissing on Adam Sandler's face.

The only thing funny about Grown Ups 2 is people reviewing it on youtube that clearly hate what they've seen and knew it going in, but they paid money for it thus guaranteeing a Grown Ups 3. The cycle will never end. Even when the cast dies they'll just bring them back CGI style because who cares, right?

Horrible Bosses was pretty good, and animated ones like Wreck It Ralph in particular have been outstanding. But yeah, mainstream comedy is kind of in the shitter right now.

Sandler does the same movie over and over again. I don't get how people don't get bored with the grown up guy who still believes is a kid and finds out he has grown up! FUCK HIM WITH A KNIFE!

He really does have talent though, as Punch Drunk Love and some others like Reign Over Me (didn't like that one so much, but he did pretty good in it) shows. Shame he's not using it to better ends.

Whatever ambition Adam Sandler originally had to make entertaining and funny films went out the window after Little Nicky. I genuinely think he looks back at those two above mentioned films as being a mistake. He doesn't care about doing anything worthwhile or important, he just wants money and a good time with his friends, even if his good time doesn't work well in films at all. And physically speaking he's aged terribly, in all his recent interviews he looks overweight, out of breath, hasn't slept and sluggish (looks like he smoked two packs a day and ate Wendy's for 15 years). He talks about mundane things like his children growing up or waiting in line at a supermarket. Simply no drive or energy to be on the ball.

Adam Sandler is about to find out.. Working as a undercover female prostitute... Is harder than it looks. From the makers of Darp and Darpy Barp, Adam Sandler is Undercover Boobie. *record scratch*"I hope my tampon isn't leaking!" Rated PG 13.

PG-13 is a shitty rating for genres like comedy, action, and horror. The best movies of those three styles are generally hard-R, and to take a movie that was filmed as a hard-R and cut it down to a PG-13 (such as Die Hard 4) is shitting all over the creative process. If the writer of the movie wanted it to be a PG-13, he would have originally written it as a PG-13.

Also, PG-13 slasher movies are an insult to the intelligence of every horror fan out there. Just look at the Prom Night remake.

I saw it in 3d last night and you wouldnt have thought that Del Toro did it. I loved it and the visuals/3d were amazing, though the live action stuff was really generic and predictable. Though it's not like this was meant for that. If only there was a real Imax theater near me.

Oh trust me, I did a research paper on the MPAA last year, their rating system and how they rate films are such bullshit. I'm looking to start being a film maker for my bachelors and while I don't have dreams of being Spielberg or anything, I'm not leaving out the idea of someday making full on big studio films. The one thing I'm worried about is the idea of having to deal with their standards and be miss-rated on something I do.

I watched that documentary on Netflix about the MPAA, "This Film Is Not Yet Rated", and yes, the MPAA's process for rating movies and how they fuck over independent films and whatnot is, indeed, a giant mound of stinky horseshit.

Ugh, outside of the diner scene, that movie was incredibly plodding and dull. The dialog alone sounded as if it was penned by a kindergartner, and every single scene dragged on and on and on. It was especially disappointing after the excellent Hard Eight, but I suppose it did accurately foreshadow what the rest of PT Anderson's movies would turn out to be (i.e., unadulterated garbage).

That movie was ridiculous. The interviews were good, but most of the film was two jackasses acting like undercover PIs diving in dumpsters for proof that studios are corrupt. Pretty stupid.

I wouldn't say it was nearly that bad, it had a good plot structure and the visuals were good, and yeah the diner scene was quite intense. But I agree that the movie hasn't aged well for me; I saw it a few years ago and now that I think back on it, I'm kind of left wondering what the hell I was supposed to take from it. The main character, whose ups and downs were supposed to be the driving force behind the entire plot, just wasn't all that interesting or memorable. I don't really know what the fuck I was supposed to take away from The Master either, but at least that had some really fascinating characters and great acting.

Yeah, it certainly was pretty; I recall a daytime pool scene being just stunningly gorgeous even though I can't remember a single thing about the actual scene. The one thing you can always bank on in a PT Anderson movie is that it'll look like candy.

I'm interested in seeing what Anderson will do with Pynchon's Inherent Vice, even though I'm pretty positive I won't like it.

Man I need to cry it out here, if you are a big cinema nut you ought to check out some Johnnie To films. Such a unique director, he makes a lot of very stylish and quirky/weird films. Often the story isn't very important, pretty barebones in fact. But it's just how everything is filmed, the camera work, the actors, their performances... sometimes he just makes magic moments out of thin air, with or without dialogue. It's how the unique, or not, characters interact between themselves. His films are hard to explain, it's not about being realistic or clever, just giving you a good time without using fancy tricks. Not all his films are as such, like the Election films where he tries to depict triad elections in a realistic manner. Purely fictional, but he brings his own touch and story while not throwing all the realism out of the window like John Woo. For instance, guns are pretty minimal as it very hard to get hold of guns in Hong Kong.

So that means I just watched another of his films tonight, A Hero Never Dies. It's an heroic bloodshed (stylish gangster films often with themes of loyalty and friendship, honor) but like... a self-aware one. It's like at the opposite of A Better Tomorrow (John Woo), the precursor of the style. It's not a parody but it tries to be the most heroic bloodshed of heroic bloodshed. It's not realistic at all and the approach is quite special. It takes some time to know what really happens, but it's a verrry simple story. It's all about the feel, atmosphere, style and all, and it works. Johnnie To doesn't have a lot of material but he really knows how to achieve much with little, it's about the little things.

Well we already have one released image of Godzilla from the new movie.

There was a DeviantArt image that's sadly disappeared which captioned the above photo with the most fitting Bible verse ever.

Quote:

And I Heard a Voice in the Midst of the Four Beasts
And I Looked and Behold a Pale Horse
And his name that Sat on Him Was Death
And Hell Followed With Him.

So I saw Pacific Rim. Yeah. This movie was not good. It's about 40 minutes too long, the characters all suck super hard and/or are uninteresting. Every bit of dialogue sucked. The robot fights were kind of cool at first. But then they went on. and on. and on. and on. Ron Pearlman's performance is kind of funny, and Charlie Day's character was completely useless. Anyways, overall lame movie.

It's getting a fair amount of good reviews on rotten tomatoes. I haven't seen it.

I thought it was awesome. If you went to see a movie about giant robots fighting monsters for interesting characters, you're an idiot. Anyway Idris Elba in particular was great, and while the dialog certainly wasn't spectacular, there also wasn't anything wrong with it either.

If you liked the action scenes in Man of Steel I don't know how you thought the Pacific Rim ones were boring. It's the same kind of explosive, big action, only PR was better, more fun and went on for longer. I always think there's an art to doing good action scenes, with tons of dynamic, intensity, fast pace...PR ticked all the boxes.

And yeah, dialogue and characters were pretty much fine. Standard, but pretty well done.

They were cool at first, but honestly the length is what killed it for me. It had infinite padding and would have been infinitely better as a shorter movie. There's only so much slow-mo robot fighting I can take. Idris Elba was good though. Because he's Idris Elba.

It wasn't really that slow. Not like Zak Snyder slow, anyway - which ironically he fixed for MoS. I thought it was the perfect tempo to see what was going on. Plus the visuals were gorgeous. I thought it felt pretty short actually, overall.

I want to support everything positive that's been said so far about Pacific Rim. It's basically a huge love letter to old giant monster movies and mecha anime (not really fond of the latter, but giant robots are just damn cool). As said before, the dialogue and such is nothing to write home about, but it wasn't awful or tacky, so I won't hold that against the movie. Loved Perlman, as always, even if his role was small, and also truly liked the fact that the relationship between Raleigh and Mako remained platonic rather than romantic. It was quite the breath of fresh air.

Plus, you know, huge robots fighting even bigger monsters. That's bloody awesome.

EDIT: That Godzilla poster? :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

EDIT 2: Also, hearing Ellen McLain's voice in this movie made me unreasonably happy.

Saw Pacific Rim yesterday, 3,5/5. It's pretty entertaining and also 100% predictable. There are some blatant references to Godannar, Gundam and a bit of Evangelion. If this movie is about mechas fighting colossal monsters, why not making the mechas faster and going all the Go Nagai route? equip the robots with chest cannons a las Mazinger; if the robot will have blades, why not using a sword like Voltes V? if not, some renovable rocket punches like Kotetsu Jeeg or just fighting moves like Daimos?

Also saw After Earth 3/5. It was decent within the plot, but a bit childish overall.
