Back when they were a death metal band.

They still are. Just not a very good one.

No, they are not even a death metal band anymore. fast drum work and harsh vocals =/= death metal. Don't even bother arguing cause you'll be wasting your typing.

Cryptopsy: st - still a great addition to their discography and nice to get my half-assed prisonwork out to.

Deicide: st - been awhile since I had listened to it, and it's still as great as when I first heard it, if not better.

Doomsday - S/T

Instrumentally, very good punky, crusty Death Metal but I find the vocals annoying.

Knokkleklang - Avgrunnens Klangverk

Hmmm...
From the little I can hear, these guys are awesome.
Repetitive but very good tremolo riffs and some slower clean guitar sections, nice drumming and whole lot of noise.
I would love to hear them with a little clearer production

David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees

Brilliant is right. This is some gorgeous art rock here, with wonderfully textured, organic soundscapes.

Hellhammer - The Reaper

I think I didn't listen to Hellhammer right until recently. I realized that if you take it as proto death metal, it can be quite irritating, but if you take it as a metallic form of hardcore punk it's actually pretty badass music.

^ Hellhammer rules dude.

NP: Tiamat - The Sleeping Beauty

Punchy riffs here mixed with spooky acoustic sections. Can't say that I enjoy the vocals really. No idea how, but Johan sounds really odd here. Gone are his vicious rasps of The Astral Sleep and instead he aims for a weakbark that doesn't even sound harsh. Fortunately he'd sound good on Wildhoney again but man, what a lacking delivery of him here.

Vulvagun - A Murder of Demons, off Cold Moon Over Babylon

"I am the Judas of the underworld
They call me Asmodey Divine
I am the many thorns of anarchy abound
The doubt and fear sublime

I am the pages of Le Megaton
Manifest of words and lies
When you invoke the Godless One
I AM THE ONE YOU'LL SEE ARISE!"

I should start putting this in my business cards. Or well, I would do it, if I had business cards. And a business.

Pain Of Salvation - Road Salt II

As fond as I am of the 'Road Salt Sequence', I can't wait for Clean/Falling Home and whatever new direction the band decides to go (even if it is back to their roots).

This is a fun album. I've only given one listen to two of their other albums though so I can't really stack it up against the rest.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - The Violation

This is not good, mediocre on it's best day, but it's so over the top and ridiculous that I'm starting to like it in a extremely lowbrow kind of way.

Exciter - Scream In The Night

Classic, ballsy speed metal - no frills here, just cool, heavy riffs with attitude.

Circle of Ouroborus - Show Me the Way to the Wishing Well

Caught me by surprise, this band. With a name like Circle of Ouroborus I thought they would be occult themed black/death... The vocalist reminds me of some band from the 80's but I can't for the life of me think of who.

Sorta how I like Rings of Saturn, but at least there are still guitars in Rings of Pinballmachines.

Greenmachine- D.A.M.N.

love some damaged as fuck dirt blues sludge.

WoY - Adora Vivos. Avoid this, please. It's marginally less terrible than Woods 4, but still a mediocre release.

Vanhelgd - Heaven Is Lost

Very good Swedish death metal, that still has a somewhat raw edge that the sophomore didn't (but it is still awesome). Pretty creepy, crawly dirgy stuff when it wants to be. Great album, and the vinyl rules.

Temple Below - Hail Satan

Damn... this is a project consisting of Bestial Mockery and Slaughtbbath members, and is one HELL of a crushing, cavernous, barbarous slab of black/death. The Dies Irae 12" I'm spinning now is loaded with dread and menace, as well as some deep guitar savagery. Excellent.

I still really enjoy Agony and play it often. It's loud and crazy, but...well, I like that. :D

Before: Sepia Dreamer - The Sublime

Hadn't heard this instrumental album in a while. Great use of piano and keyboards mixed in with melodic metal. It's not as random as Behold The Arctopus, nor is it as complex as Spastic Ink, but it's got a nice charm to it.

Now: Thorns - Thorns

Yeah, this is still really good. Great riffs and some great use of industrial overtones, whether in the background or right in your face. Where's the follow-up, Snorre? :(

Therion - Wings of the Hydra

This is pretty insane stuff with shouted vocals and plenty of groove to be found in the crushing riffs. I expected to dislike this because of the symphonic tag but I'm glad I was wrong.

Yeah, a great song. But there's more to Battle Cry than that. Every song is good and somehow different. But not too different. Good balance of blast/melody. The Axeman is maybe their best moment along Hell's Gates. Be My Wench has some quite suspicious lyrics though...

Bathory - Blood and Iron

This song is so cool it calms me down even on this hot summer's day. That and beer.

My friend lent me the 3CD Grind Madness at the BBC comp, so I listened to it yesterday. Man, it kicks ass! I didn't get through all of it, but all of the bands kicked ass. The four Godflesh tracks (Tiny Tears, Wound, Pulp, Like Rats) were the best part of the comp. Napalm Death sounded absolutely massive and unrelenting. I still need to listen to CD2, which has the Carcass and Bolt Thrower tracks.

That is a truly unique Black Metal album. I'm a fan of all their works, but Autumn Aurora and Lebedynyy Shlyakh get the most plays from me. Good pick, man!
