I think Blind Guardian's Satan, Demon, Dio covers where better, the originals were awesome, however BG just made everything about it way better.

I kinda like Sonata Arctica's cover of Scorpions' Still Loving You more than the original. The more up-tempo and chaotic feel just seems more fitting; almost maniacal. Didn't work so well on their cover of I Want Out, though.
I was also really impressed with Decapitated's take on Slayer's Mandatory Suicide. They added a crunching, visceral intensity that put it at least on par with the original.

I actually like the "I Want Out" cover. But then, I don't really care for the original Scorpions "Still Loving You" either, and the Sonata cover is similarly unimpressive...no reason except that it doesn't grab me that much, in either form.

Both their covers of Trial by Fire and Don't Talk to Strangers are cool, but I would never say that their versions are superior to the originals and, in fact, their rendition of Don't Break the Circle kinda sucks, if you ask me. In fact, I much prefer their covers of Queen and The Beach Boys. For some reason, Hansi and the crew are damn good when it comes to injecting metal madness into old rock classics :-D

I think their Helloween cover is alright, it just doesn't overtake the original for me. I remember reading in the liner notes of Takatalvi (re-release) that even Tony eventually regretted how they sped it up. I think it added a lot of much needed spunk and feeling to Still Loving You though. The original is just too dull and plodding for me.

Overkill's Death Tone cover of Manowar is pretty good. Better then the original if you ask me.
Also their covers of DP's Spacetruckin' and JP's Tyrant are very good. Not better or worse than the original imo. Different but good.
In fact, their whole coverkill album is awesome if you ask me.

lol at Killswitch's Holy Diver being better

I prefer Grave's cover of Vermin by Asphyx, I just prefer Ola Lindgrens vocals over Martin Van Drunen(still love his vocals) also I find a lot of times when someone prefers a cover it's due to the fact they heard the cover first. If you hear a song you really love and it's a cover you love the cover most because it is what got you to love that song whereas if you hear the original you prefer that.

I just checked that one out for the first time and my god did it SUCK. It's bad enough that they speed it up but those vocals and that unbearable drum sound just totally kill it, I'm sorry but I just hate bands like Decapitated.

Not trying to stir shit but why do you hate bands like Decapitated Sonofabitch? not trying to call you out but have you listened to any of their albums? also the youngest member of the band at that time was 18 and the drummer was only 15 when it was recorded.

I prefer Eldritch's cover of My Sharona over the original. The cover blows it out of the water. How can you not love the bass at the beginning?

I pretty sure he's asking why you enjoy it more. That version is pretty much universally hated by everyone (me included, you can't top Dio he was a god) so you gotta be able to defend that statement.

Not agreeing with him, but you can't deny that 'I just enjoy it more' is perfectly valid. Sometimes technical details as to why don't really exist. He just prefers the turd on his bread to Nutella, yknow?

Yeah, it is a valid statement. I definitely agree with you, but I was hoping he had more of a reason than just preferring dog shit to nutella.

heaven shall burn did a pretty spot-on cover of Black Tears. Maybe I just like that style of melodeath more than Edge of Sanity.
Infant Annihilator's Gangnam Style cover is easily better than the original, I'll take some mashed up tech death riffs with some poorly done breakdowns over that farty-synthy techno jargon of the original any day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ27dghKQsA

I just really dont like modern technical death metal in general, I've heard some Decapitated songs here and there and they dont work for me at all.

Reverend Bizarre covers (Beherit, Burzum, Barathrum, Judas Priest) are always a good listen. Not saying they're better than the original, but I'm listening their The Gate of Nanna more than I listen to the original.

For me one is Macabre's "Behind The Wall of Sleep" from the EP with the same title. I love the original, but the way Macabre play it is awesome, because I love the rest of their music it makes it that much better, in their style.

Of course this one isn't actually better than the original, but it's pretty awesome.

I think Decapitated's cover of Mandatory Suicide destroys the original by Slayer. Otherwise, Death's cover of Painkiller is great, I think I like it better than Judas Priest's original version.

Other great covers include Detroit Rock City by Hammerfall (KISS), Kneel To The Cross by Agalloch (Sol Invictus), Solitude by Ulver (Black Sabbath), Skin o' My Teeth by Kalmah (Megadeth).

The cover is far from horrible. And when it comes to metalcore, Killswitch Engage is among some of the best bands of the genre.

Probably Blood of my Enemies by Edge of Sanity, a Manowar cover. I can't help it, I love Dan Swano's baritone voice! Plus, it sounds much more badass with death metal distortion and tuning.

Also, Everything Counts by In Flames is a pretty amazing cover of the cheesy Depeche Mode song. One of the few songs where Ander's clean vocals don't sound like crap!

Vader's cover of Raining Blood. Not to take away anything from the original, but the heavier guitars and drums and death growls make the song sound a lot more powerful.

Agalloch totally change it, add new instrumentation and the sound finally lives up to the lyrics.
Bullshit! The Agalloch cover is a version devoid of feeling, atmosphere and everything that makes the original an entertaining and thought-provoking experience. Agalloch's version is an elevator music rendition of a great song. The vocals are somewhat out of tune, but his conviction is such that he makes the Agalloch vocalist appear as a little kitten in comparison. A bored, uninterested and uninteresting little kitten.

Procession did a cover of "Crazy Train" by Ozzy. Maybe not better than the original, but very different and the cover is a really unsettling listen.

I like Sol Invictus and all and they have Agalloch infinitely beaten in the writing department, but no, don't try to defend Sol Invictus vocals. 90% of the time the man sounds like he's about to pass out drunk.

Singing out of tune to that extent is rather irrelevant compared to Haughm's sedated, utterly passionless crooning. That's not the major issue, though. The problem with Agalloch's version is that it's sucked dry of emotion and atmosphere compared to the original.
