Not all metalcore sounds like what you described, nor was it soully created by those bands you are talking about. It existed for quite a long time before a glut of bands started aping At the Gates.

Black Metal/Shoegaze...almost identical to Alcest.

Also, what about Shyy or Soliness?

Part doom, part ambient/acoustic stuff, not predominantly metal.

Soliness: "Post-rock/shoegaze with flaccidly minimal black metal influences". Shyy and Sleeping Peonies have no notes about their inclusion in the blacklist, but after checking them out, I find them not to be metal bands. Too much shoe and pretty much no metal.

Why was the band Circlevicious rejected? It was rejected with no notes as to why. The vocals are Gothic/Doom-ish and the riffing seems to be Metal (apart from a few song intros ), so how is this not acceptable for the cite?

Actually, to me it's not. I can't hear the difference (except for the vocals).
As I said, my interest in the genre isn't that great. I think I like pop music marginally better than gothic/female fronted metal...
And, pray, tell... Why would you presume to know what I think sounds the same or not?

We have been discussing a lot of these bands recently, both on their own merits of metalness and possibly a slightly increased tolerance for how we judge some of the early metal/proto-metal type stuff. Just to keep you folks aware, you might not get a quick response but we are certainly giving these bands quite a bit of attention and discussion.
Lucifer's Friend should be on the archives; wouldn't surprise me if Judas Priest took a few cues from Ride in the Sky when composing Deceiver.

Speaking of Proto-Metal, I've contemplated submitting the band Bang, but Christ, I'm really torn. They're palpably Sabbathian, yet seem caught between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Here's some tracks from the 1971 debut:

Downloading the Uglor demos now, hopefully I'll have a chance to listen tomorrow. When I listen through I'll make a note here, assuming I verify that they're metal then you can make note of that to speed up the submission. There's so much listening to do with bands in the queue right now.

Regarding Bang and other proto-metal, I'd suggest waiting a little while to submit them. We're slowly but surely talking about that type of stuff, but it'll take time to decide exactly how we will handle that type of thing. Quite a few people with a lot of insights to go around, and we certainly aren't rushing it. We're discussing a few bands right now.

I'll listen to the Bang tracks at some point, but I've done a lot of listening to submissions lately and right now I need some time to relax without burning myself out on listening to and analyzing bands metalness.

Ok, thank you Zodijackyl, the first demo is better quality then the second one. And its much more metal...still mixed with hardcore but straight up thrash metal riffs with some heavy metal riffs too.

This certainly isn't heavy metal. Sounds like Bullet for My Valentine. Melodic hardcore with a bunch of melodies, but little riffing that could be considered metallic. Not a metal band.

I'm going to make a brief appeal for Demon Hunter; I know this has been done before.

It is my understanding that they were rejected or blacklisted for being nu metal. However, the only work they have done that is really nu metal in the least is their self-tited debut. This was released over a decade ago and they have since released five full-lenths that are not nu metal in the least. I know I've seen bands (Soulfly comes to mind) that were accepted into the Archives despite a nu metal history, so I assume it's not an immediate rejection.

Now, they play more of a mix of groove metal and melodic metalcore, and I believe that their latest effort, True Defiance (2012) is a metal album as fits the criteria of the Archives. Samples from each album (if necessary):

2004: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWftdafCdx8
2005: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eduTSxlv1TE
2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kEaHRtPOMo
2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXVamfYp-UY
2012: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmifyDAcN6A

Thank you for hearing me out, and sorry if this is an inconvenience.

If the mods don't mind, I'll throw out an answer here. I've made appeals for Demon Hunter for their last 3 albums, including True Defiance, and each time, the mods come back and say that they're still too borderline -core for the site. You can even read one of the staff's many response about them here, from after True Defiance's release.

Hi,

I wanted to ask why I Am Eternal (from Australia) were blacklisted. In my opinion, they play a mixture of Melodic Death Metal/Deathcore highly similar to the style of Through the Eyes of the Dead. Their album Conflictions is available on CD.

I couldn't find more songs for streaming on YouTube, but they have snippets of the whole album on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/i-am ... d426079240

Thanks!

They were "more -core than metal" in December. Unless they have released new material after that, I doubt we'll be keen to reconsider at this point.

Their album was released in 2011, but I don't see where it would be "more -core than metal". Similarly to Through the Eyes of the Dead, it's basically melodic death metal (The Black Dahlia Murder style) with some breakdowns here and there. But if nobody wants to reconsider it, I'm fine with that.

I can't listen to those iTunes snippets right now. The Youtube song is borderline, though I'd lean acceptable. Depends on what the rest sounds like.

This song is on the album as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dcqjHXX ... 93EAB76378

Otherwise, there only seem to be some live clips available.

Hello,

My name is Cassius; I'm the guitarist of the italian black metal band Satan's Supremacy. I read your rules, and I don't know any causes, but my band is in your "Black List". We made 2 albums and we're working on the next one, we've got photos about it, facebook fan page, we can testify our band, and our genre. Please give me a email address, I'll send what you need.

Thank you,

Cassius

Deathdrive has no mention about their inclusion on the list. Same thing with satan's supremacy. Post links that prove the existence of the releases and music samples.

Hey guys, I tried to add the band Exist from Washington DC and it got rejected:
"More proggy jazz fusion/djenty ambience than metal, sorry mate. Whatever metallic elements are in this band's material, they're certainly not the focus of their music. Make sure you've read our rules next time to see what qualifies as metal."

While I agree that there is a LOT of fusion in the band's music, I disagree with the djenty ambience and metal not being the focus of their music assertions. To me they're kind of like Cynic and Exivious, heavy on the fusion side but metal enough to be here.

Here's the band's bandcamp, where you can listen to their EP
http://existmd.bandcamp.com/

Thanks!

Why is Betraying The Martyrs blacklisted, they're not a generic metalcore/deathcore band that mindlessly chugs.

Just because they aren't typical doesn't mean they aren't unacceptable. Yeah, they do more than mindlessly chug; like add in horrid post hardcore cleans, irrelevant keys, and bigger, more mindless chugs with a djent-style tone. Yeah, definitely less metal than whatever the hell else is going on, not gonna happen, sorry.

You know who else isn't generic? The worst band I've ever heard

appealing the rejection of karbonBlack, this is an industrial metal side project of mine. I'm in the metal band Halcyon Way; it appears to meet the criteria.

Non-metal side-projects are only admitted under special circumstances... that is, if the musician in question is an artist of considerable renown, and the project was founded in tandem with a famous, metallic project. There's no hard-and-fast criteria, but suffice to say your project falls far short of it. Sorry.
