SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.fuglymaniacs.com

Image

By fuglymaniacs

This band has Allen West, who is of course known for his work with Obituary. Do you happen to like Obituary? Those heavy Obituary grooves and an ear-friendly death metal vibe that I am tempted to call rock and roll. But don’t get the wrong idea. These riffs sound like Obituary and certain parts might remind of certain bits in Obituary albums.
The vocals are low, which is different from Obituary’s painful growling, but the overall drumming, the guitar work and the feel says that Allen West is just doing what Allen West is known for. Listen to those Allen West signature guitar solos!
“Give the people what the people want” is the philosophy this band and Allen West. Personally, I can’t get enough of this stuff. Then again, I do like Obituary a whole lot.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.fuglymaniacs.com

Image

By fuglymaniacs

With this band, they do not hide their songs behind any tricks. There is no gimmick going on because they do not need any. Fester’s music is centered on the objective of creating a mood.
Therefore, what is essential is not how fast, brutal or grim the songs sound, though Fester sounds completely within the territory of death/black/doom.
The result is songs that are surprisingly easy to remember and get into and to make you nod along in agreement with the first couple of listens since it’s easy to keep up with the uptempo/midtempo pace.
“The Black Tower” is very likable, despite the fact that it is dark, brooding and grave in mood: it is a miserably catchy song.
“I’ll Hunt You Down” is just fun. Sounds like an angry gremlin, from his tiny cave, threatening the whole world. Fester will hunt you down with their evil guitars and melodies and make you rock out: “Resistance is futile, Fester is not!”
“Metalized” is a bit on the brutal side of things. No messing around, just a heavy, uptempo number. Fester is not a band to do blasting speed, the music goes a uptempo/midtempo pace, that way the listener can keep up more easily, without distractions. You don’t need to hear the music 50 times to figure it out and decide if you like it or not.
A word about the production: this album does sound like it was recorded in a cave. You can turn it up really loud, and you still won’t feel like you are right there where the action is taking place. It will sound like it is “down the hall,” as the nice man known as “the master” likes to say.
Be that as it may, fact: this album has feeling and it has plenty of sinister heaviness, as well as fun hidden melody.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by Dead Void Dream

Image

By Paul Caravasi

Well, here's my review of this insane and awesome band , which I can only describe as pure alcoholic heavy metal with black metal vocals and evil lyrics. No harmonies of perfect sound here, just true metal directly to your brain, this style is just perfect and I say it again - this album kick so much ass. It's like to hear the almighty MOTORHEAD but even louder and more evil. The difference of MAAX is the influences of punk along with rock and roll ,what a lethal combination! Another perfect release of Abyss Records, here's a perfect example that underground music is alive and well. Excellent band, I can't wait for the next album !!!

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) "Chalice of Black Flames" CD EP review by Pest Webzine

Image

By Alrinack

Chaossvorn is an excellent Swedish band, and they propose to us, with their debut cd "Chalice of Black Flames”, a really intersting music!! The duration of this opus is aproximatly 15 minutes, but 15 minutes of melodic hate!! At first, we can listen a very good production, tainted by the legendary Swedish touch.. the three compositions are finely structured, the guitars are present without being deafening, while having this massive and aggressive focus! Earlier, guttural voices, sometimes black, bring their share of hate and no compromise!
We can, through this mini cd, imagine what could be an album.. a longer burst of catchy riffs, intertwined with tempos ranging from semi grind, to post punk, cyclic up sometimes dooms heaviest.. This is, in any case, the feeling given to me by these three titles!
I will continue to follow this band, and I invite any big fan of Swedish metal to support Chaossvorn! They are signed to Abyss Records, which is not innocent .. this label is deemed to sniff out promising bands and I think that once again we can trust them!

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://pestwebzine.com

Image

By Adrian

I was so amazed by this band's debut demo and EP that I can say this is one of the few bands I was eagerly expecing to release a full-length, and luckily Abyss Records picked them up and recently released their debut. To be honest I feared they would loose their track, but that's not the case, "Against All Odds" is on the same Epic Black Metal path, an awesome jurney through times, a romanticized paining of epic battles that makes you feel and imagine both the intensity of a clash between opposite armies and the sweet taste of victory. I am not disapointed at all by what this band has become, I only think they should deserve more attention. And back to the album, the perfect blend of fast rhythmed Black Metal with more mid-paced Epic parts is the real highlight of Eternal Helcaraxe, and I say this is perfect because everything on this material seems and feels natural, the music flows like undisturbed rivers. I'm so proud to have this CD in my collection and I recommend it to all of you into Epic Metal, it's a must! The only thing missing for this band is a powerful image, here they should step up to their music's level...

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.deathdomain.com

Image

By CÄ

Sweden’s Daemonicus once again return to the crime scene; this time with their second full-length effort since the start in 2006. We’re talking old-school death metal, the Swedish way, somewhere in the borderland between Grave (“Into The Grave“-era), Edge Of Sanity (“Unorthodox“-era) and Necrophobic (“The Nocturnal Silence“-era), yet with a refreshingly youthful touch. Having been a sucker for this type of death metal since its glory days, I must say this is very much to my taste. Tracks like “The Grandeur Of Total Termination” and “We Feast On Your Flesh” stand out as downright death metal hits, with their meaty, mid-paced heaviness and catchy melody-work, in the guitar-department!

Sound-wise, I think the production fits the music like a glove, giving it that filthy, yet easily accessible environment, in which the music is allowed to grow and reach its full potential, without ever losing its nasty edge.

Taken as a whole, “Deadwork” very much struck my fancy, with its blend of passionate riffing/song-writing and well thought-out, overall formula. It’s definately a step up from their debut and with that said, I look to the future of Daemonicus with confidence!

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.rottinghill.at

Image

By Wolfgang

"Bane" have the extreme metal genre already earned a name and publish "The Acausal Fire," their second album in full length. In Serbia, it was founded in 2006 and came the following year with their demo "Unfinished" for the first time approached the scene. The Full Length predecessor "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" could convince me already and lets hope in this case a least equal output, finally, in between here two years and three split releases. When the troupe was also placed several times on ice, then one may expect of experience and development. "Bane" move stylistically in Blackened Death Metal genre, like a mixture of "Belphegor", "dissection", "Bathory", " Behemoth "and the Swedish" The Shining ". If you only put the symphonic intro behind, the boys break into a known, fast-paced form of the boxes. Highly accurate thresh release the Serbian musician, the riffs keep always dramatic and build a deeply corrosive atmosphere that is broken up by epic, rocking solos. Only now and then the tempo is slightly curbed and one is limited to slow, gloomy passages that will be mainly driven by the guitars. Besides the hateful voice of singer Branislav Panic is brought by the integration of after "Bathory" sounding clean vocals, choirs or with enough variety in the tracks. Thus, it is not too monotonous in sum, because the part of the songwriting I do not feel the complete disc as seamless exciting. Sound natural, the nine tracks - and certainly not the cover version of "Night's Blood", which incidentally is managed well -. Not all alike, but particularly intrusive do have me not presented beyond this aspect, I feel it as bad that the Full Length-drive failed on the length of her somewhat meager. The nearly three minute opening, except the continuing over three minutes Outro "Entering The Paradoxical Sphere" and with the aforementioned cover song remains, originally from not quite 42 minutes a remaining playing time of just over 28 minutes. All of this may of course not to say that "Bane" missed their target, no, because ultimately with "The Acausal Fire" there is a hateful, brute album that has the audience in terms of extreme metal much to offer. After all, on this publication last induction and recovery, which you can listen in fact and constitute separate tracks, which you listen to you. Not only the precise handling of the instruments and the clean recording makes this album a pleasure, but also the targeted production leaves a deep impression when listening. Thus, the silver disc presented in the effective duration of the half-hour in both raw oppressive, including clean translate form, but not forgetting the harsh factor that I personally find to be important in the metal genre. Just a bit more powerful the sound would to my mind have to be. Indeed intrusive earwigs are indeed passed me, but lies with "The Acausal Fire" before a fast-paced, thrilling album that invites you to bang your head, but just bit short. "Bane" remained faithful to their chosen path, have nevertheless continued to develop positively. The 2012er output is no runaway album, but I can say this disc on my recommendation. Tracklist: 01 Bringing Forth The Endless Dark Aeon 02 The End Of Humanity 03 In Endless Silence 04th As chaos Rises 05th Light The Black Flame 06th The Truth Unleashed 07th World Of Desolation 08th Existence In Denial 09th Entering The Paradoxical Sphere 10th Night's Blood ("Dissection" cover)

Rating: 7/10

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://hardrockinfo.com

Image

By Jimmy Blom

RADIATION SICKNESS was formed in Indianapolis, IN back in 1987 already by Doug Palmer and Ryan Rollins (r.i.p). A couple of members have come and left through the years. In 1989 Ryan Rollins commit suicide, but the band continued until 1992. In 2010 they did a reunion show, which was meant to be a one-time thing, but it obviously worked so well that they decided to continue.
Their influences comes from both metal and hardcore/punk bands - NAPALM DEATH, CHAOS UK, DISCHARGE, SLAYER etc. I guess we can call it grind core, but there's a lot of old-school hardcore/punk in it too. It's hard but not too intense and noisy. Somehow they menage to always have a melody in their songs, and I like that. And even though there's as much as 19 tracks, it's over in approximately 37 minutes, so you see, it just can't be bad.
Really good stuff that should fit like a glove for both extreme metallers and punks.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://destructive-music.com

Image

By LUKE HAYHURST

I’m a big fan of Septekh’s last release entitled “The Seth Avalanche”. Tracks like “Fuckslut From Hell” and “Eating The Maneater” tend to stay around in your memory. The bands new EP is entitled “Apollonian Eyes” and is out through Chaos Records. Four tracks that open with title song “Apollonian Eyes”, Septekh waste no time in resuming their fast aggressive pace, sleaze ridden riffs and frantic almost shambolic style. If anything on this record the band have lost some of their previous groove, opting for a solidly violent and venomous approach, at least when compared to their previous release. I’d also say that the death metal aspect is far more pronounced on “Apollonian Eyes”.

With all that being said when a brief moments kicks in where Septekh slow down the pace the groove returns in full force and as with previous material they can be unbelievably catchy. destruction seems to be on their mind though as “Burn it to the ground” would appear to give testimony too, this rampaging assault of a song showing no mercy as it bludgeons forward but also features some excellent prominent bass sections, awe inspiring guitar solos and a bouncy, catchy flow throughout. Funnily enough i listened to this EP a few weeks ago and didn’t like it, maybe I was in a funny mood because on giving it a second spin it is the same old Septekh that I love, maybe a little more venomous than before but they are still there, sleazy, groovy and hostile! You have to love the Swedes!

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://destructive-music.com

Image

By LUKE HAYHURST

I hold Swedish death metal in quite a high regard as do many others. So a band whose lyrical inspiration comes from bashing religion and zombies, plays death metal and hails from Sweden is always going to grab my interest. “Deadwork” is the second album from Daemonicus and has been released through The Abyss records and sees the Umea based death dealers return from their 2009 debut album “Host of Rotting Flesh” and also their 2010 EP “11th Hour”

As the album artwork might suggest this is no enlightened stroll through the forest, more a fear inducing trek through the murk and gloom of a deadly underworld with mortal danger and large amounts of peril around every shadow strewn corner. Including a certain amount of old school death metal flavour into their modern sounding work, Daemonicus combine spectacular double kick drumming with grinding malevolent riff-age and of course no death metal album is complete without the deathly growls of a man who loves to abuse his vocal chords in the most vile of ways and luckily Stefan Hagstrom isn’t averse to a little bit of abuse when delivering his full throttle growls!

Yet as is so often the case with Swedish death metal Daemonicus have a little more to offer that furious growls and menacing riffs. Throughout “Deadwork” there is an unholy feeling, a deeply ingrained melodic undertone that runs through every chorus, sits neatly behind all the hostile battering that the band partakes in and in doing so keeps the album sounding genuinely heavy and monstrous yet also with many hidden darkened layers. The same can be said of the bands lyrical themes, from the right to your face no nonsense approach of say “We Feast on Your Flesh” or the equally zombie influenced “From Alive to Dead Life” to more cerebral and thought provoking titles such as “The Hymn of Ubo Sathla” and “The Grandeur of Total Termination”.

despite all of this though the most important aspect has to be how the album sounds, whether it flows well from one track to the next and how good the musicianship and song craft is and without a doubt this is Daemonicus’s strongest and most heart felt album to date, intensely furious and surging but with the constant hint at a shadow world within the aggression, “Deadwork” showcases another Swedish death metal act on the rise!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by Bad Ass N Grimness

Image

By Deej

First order of business, “Where Hope Turns Dripping Red” is a great name for a great Death Metal album. You know exactly what you’re getting involved in. Secondly, this cover art is awesome, the font and image look like a fan mod for The Ultimate Doom, Wolfensteining it up with a spawn in the middle of WW2 with commandos and those weird shit coloured Imp things hunting you down with a furious salvo of 16bit devastation.
This is a near perfect, no bullshit execution of the death metal sub-genre. Each and every track on this album is a lesson in the blood splattered art, flowing seamlessly through blast beat intensity to neckbreaking groovefests and machine gun tight rythm delivery. Particular stand out points as follows: “Kingdom of Damnation” adds a sparing yet complimentary use of D-Beat which creates a welcome rythmic shift from the 4:4 double kickdrum, and gives the latter more impact when it does kick back in. “Deutsches Afrika Corpse” sums up everythings that is great about this album in it’s first minute, (Killer Riff – Brutal Gut Destroying Blast – Wyldesque heapings of Pinched Harmonics – Unstoppable Groove Machine). “Rocket Symphony” is a well placed mid-tempo effort with slow march riffs providing some gnarly relief from the more fast paced songs flanking it. There is no compromise here with complacency and over indulgence, no filler; these songs are so dense with quality material its like a pepperami constructed from prime veel, Ingredients: 200% industrially condensed blindly shrieking taste sensation. This holds true as much for the album as a whole as for individual tracks, clocking in at around 34 minutes it never outlasts its welcome and holds up after repeataed plays.
I’m finding it difficult to find anything critical to say about this release, the mission statement seems to be to carpet bomb the aural tracts of anyone who happens to be in the sonic vacinity, and essentially what you’re left with is a decimated firestorm where your ossicles used to be. “Where Hope Turns Dripping Red” is a living corpse that will throttle you to death with its gore caked talons.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.midwinterfires.com

Image

By James

Sweden is a country that has been pumping out a lot of good death metal bands lately. I’m a big fan of the new “old school” death metal sound coming out of this country. Enter Septekh. Septekh is a 4-piece band born in 2008. The band plays a solid mixture of thrash and death metal. Including a 2009 demo, “Apollonian Eyes” is the fourth output from Septekh and the third Ep. The guys have yet to put out a full length. “Apollonian Eyes” features 4 rather short tracks and was released by Abyss Records.

When I first looked at the press kit for “Apollonian Eyes” my first instinct was to push it aside and move on to the next review submission. This is pretty well all because of the album cover. It’s not very attractive and sort of looks like someone put it together using the classic Windows program “Paint”. Anyway, I decided to give it a try against my better judgment and was pleasantly greeted with some very solid metal.

“Apollonian Eyes” is a very good mix of thrash and death metal. It has decent production and has some pretty catchy riffing and hooks. Unfortunately the Ep does lack a bit of originality and for this reason it does not really stand out all that much. However, the music is high energy and aggressive, especially the mid to high style of the growls which sit loudly perched on top of the mix. The guitars switch between fast paced, tremolo picked thrash riffs to slightly slower, heavier, palm muted death metal grooves. The leads are short but sweet. The drumming seems sort of chaotic at times, thinking of the snare here on the first track “Apollonian Eyes”, though overall keeps a steady barrage of double kicking and blast beats to keep the energy high.

My personal favourite track on the Ep is the second song “Burn it to the Ground” It’s got some great old school death metal grooves and high energy thrash riffs making it catchy as shit. There’s a short part around the 1:40 mark where the music drops out and the bass shines through. It’s been used thousands of times by thousands of bands but I’m a sucker for it and it never gets old for me. Overall though the music is at times a little bland and not all that innovative. Septekh don’t really stray from their technique which is fine for an Ep but would be rather tiresome for a full length.

So “Apollonian Eyes” is a solid listen and if you want catchy, high energy music to get your blood flowing then Septekh will not disappoint.

WAN (Sweden) "Wolves of the North" CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernández

"Wolves in the North" has interesting sections such as "Wargoat", "Ursinnets begar" or the great "Med Stormsteg Döden Mot", making this work a more than good Black Metal album with a perfect interpretation of the instruments but not to exceed details or flourishes in many of them are almost always in vain.
The presence of a single guitar might limit the possibilities of this Swedish trio in the level of composition but good, with good production in the Regime Hammer Studio, this CD sounds good as hell. In terms of instruments, the bass for me is the element that most high quality while the guitar would sound more powerful and the battery makes no more compliant role.

In summary, this first full length WAN no doubt appeal to fans like formations DARKTHRONE, VENOM, CELTIC FROST MAYHEM or for example by returning to the past with very good songs with touches of Black Metal thrasers.

Rating: 8/10

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) "The Spirit of Warfare" CD review by Pest Webzine

Image

By Adrian

The guys at Abyss Records seem to have a real cult for Swedish bands but who can blame them? Sweden always produced great quality bands and the ones Abyss signed up until now are pretty much cool presences in the scene. Hyperborean were formed in 2000, but this is only their debut album, so like in many other cases I think the reason for this scarce activity could be the line-up changes. The music on "The Spirit of Warfare" is quite strange, mostly mid-tempo melodic Black Metal built on old-school principles mostly, but also including a strong attempt in adding progressive touches, at least in the rythm section. The compositions are interesting and complex enough to keep your attention high all the way, but on the whole album there a feeling something's missing, there are some parts that might have worked better with an additional instrument added. It seems these guys are focused more on creating melodic and intricate passages than on the brutal and/or aggressive part of this genre.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://www.metalteamuk.net

Image

By Martin Harris

The distinctive cover art on this release is reminiscent of booze infused biker rock and metal which is actually not too far from depicting the musical output of Maax. An investigation into the bands previous output reveals that their debut has a more serious black metal side compared the 2010 EP which set the scene nicely for the thrash ‘n’ roll infested wrangling of the sophomore effort. The bands music focuses on the blackened side of things in terms of the riffing and vocal styles but sits extremely comfortably in heavy metal on the bass angle. Opening tune is “Coldest Steel” and immediate thoughts of black thrash appear due to the snarling vocals and the slightly chaotic structure of the song. There is also a sleaze façade to Maax’s music that sounds weird but works in a way that Gehennah, Inferno, Bewitched did on their debuts only this is much cleaner to listen to.
Next is “Fight With Fire” which has a decent Araya type scream and very early Slayer like speed riff. The riff is intensified further as the song changes gear and is out into the fast lane. Vocals remind me of Legion (ex-Marduk) being throaty and rasping but transparent to decipher. I’ll never tire of hearing motorbike revving to start a song as the title track is given this and the first signs of black thrash ‘n’ roll are manifested. The bass solo is excellent creating that dirty filth texture of someone like Motorhead or even early Venom, an influence that pops up on “Do What Thou Wilt” and is very close to “Welcome To Hell” on the riff. Namesake songs are trademark for this style of metal and Maax are no different with theirs which has a 70s/80s Motorhead driven riff after the opening of cans and the sound of the band members gaseously evacuating their stomachs. The Venom touch still potters about in this song with the catchy beat as it does on a lot of songs here.
“Rot And Roll” is a cracking song and weaned purely out of AC/DC on the riff only much heavier and with Priest and Saxon hooks added to create a decent heavy metal tune to bang your fucking head to. I know people who will also say this has Montrose riffing which they will either agree with me or not when they hear this song. Ah the acoustic interlude, very heavy metal, very retro and very relevant for this release as it serves as the gateway to “Overthrone” which is a far nastier and uglier song overall. The double kick and blast work to bolster the fury of the song with the barking vocals. The closing trio of tracks on this album follow a similar template with “Black Thrash Em All” leading the way as the songs title hints before “Deliverer” brings about some Frost/Hellhammer hooks. Closing tune “One More Time” is prime heavy metal with a blackened edge. The lead is excellent and prolonged and extremely tuneful, hummable even, in a 1980s manner. This was a welcome addition to my end of year reviews and with end of year lists looming this is going to be a close one in my top 20 or 30.

ENTRENCH – INEVITABLE DECAY: Awesome Thrash from out of nowhere
It doesn’t really happen that often anymore; but receiving such an unexpected record from a totally unknown band is still one damn pleasure.
Entrench hail from Sweden, and they have an awesome name and an even cooler logo. Now that’s rare for a new band, as all the cool-sounding “Metal” names seem to have been taken.
Entrench was born in 2006, and after a few line-up changes and obscure demos, the band's just released it’s first album, called Inevitable Decay, through the US-based Abyss Records.
First observation: the cover of the CD is strange, absolutely not your usual Thrash Metal art (apparently done by bassist Joel Sundin). The rest of the artwork is more conventional with live pictures of the band and the lyrics. I also like the nice purple color on the back of the CD, really reminds me of those old Thrash CDs I used to buy back in the 90s.
Musically speaking, Entrench is a Thrash Metal band, or should I say a Scandinavian Thrash Metal band.
When it comes to Thrash Metal, we usually mention the American scene and the German scene. And that’s pretty unfair in my opinion as the Scandinavian scene’s contribution to Thrash Metal is equally as important. Some speak of Black/Thrash (we’ll discuss this soon with an interview of the band Nekromantheon) or Death/Thrash, but at the end of the day, it’s nothing else but pure Thrash Metal to me.
The fact that Entrench come from Sweden means a lot though as it does influence their Thrash. In fact, the guys say it themselves: they play Thrash Metal with early Death Metal influences. And that’s absolutely correct, as listening to Inevitable Decay feels a little bit like listening to the first Swedish Death Metal bands. There is that particular feeling of emergency and insanity, just as if the musician’s lives were at stake. And that makes the music sometimes sound clumsy, particularly when it comes to leads. Now if you play in a Metal band, please do remember that sounding “clumsy” or not being technically sharp sounds nice when the music you’re composing is genuinely inspired, otherwise, you’ll just sound shitty.
Entrench’s Thrash is very sharp, aggressive, hysterical, very epic and so nicely composed. Each song contains tons of variations, different riffs, and cool melodies; in one word: that album is extremely DYNAMIC. A little bit like early US thrash, particularly bands like Forbidden who also play a “clinical” and complex kind of thrash.
To this, of course, you need to add the screamed vocals and that “Scandinavian Touch” making the music more aggressive, and very dark, just like your early Death Metal used to sound like.
All the 8 songs on this album are very cool, but 2 of them really caught my attention: “Portrait Of A Phobia” and “Where Only Ruins Remain”. Maybe coz’ they’re even more epic than the other songs.
All you need to remember is that if you like Thrash, than I really think you should check this band out. Their Thrash is authentic, original, and therefore different from all those hyped retro-thrash bands the bigger labels are trying to make you believe in.
To Entrench means "To provide with a trench, for the purpose of fotifying or defending". Watch out guys, these warriors are here to stay, and they are heavily armed.
Easily one of my favorite albums this year!

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by Misantropia Extrema

Image

By misantropiaextrema

Despite having only released their debut EP in 2007, the history of Italian Humangled dates back to 1996, the year he recorded his first scale model, and before that, its key elements Putrid Sequence had belonged to until 1995. No wonder therefore that the death metal quintet's sound as cohesive in Tuscany, even more so when is the hand of Dan Swanö in production. In stylistic terms, is a mix between death metal and more classic riffs death'n'roll easy the last stage of the career of Carcass, with the same type of guitar sound full and warm. Especially the last track, "Deny Yopur Creed." Although not excel over their peers who play (good) European death metal, the Humangled also not far behind. The four tracks on this EP that allow us to understand the evolution of the band in relation to their debut album (released in 2010) relates mainly to a further clarification on the composition and structure of the bands, which appear more compelling musical personality and a more marked. Anyone who enjoys death metal abrasive, technical and brutal riffs with space for breathing is therefore here a handful of tracks to enjoy.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.axestogrind.com

Image

By Admin

I don’t think you can mention Florida in metal circles without immediately thinking of the Old School Death Metal movement. In one breath, any true metal fan can name at least a half dozen Death Metal bands based in the Sunshine State. Whether its CANNIBAL CORPSE, OBITUARY, DEATH or MORBID ANGEL – all helped shape the Old School Death Metal sound that laid the foundation for much of what we hear today. Fast forward to 2012, and there are more modern Death Metal bands than you can keep up with.

SOUTHWICKED is one such current act, and are based out of Florida. Not only that, but the band’s lead guitarist is none other than Allen West of ex-OBITUARY/ex-SIX FEET UNDER fame. These guys pull from both the Swede Death and the Old School Florida Death styles to form their sound. SOUTHWICKED contains trademark death growls, driving chord work that changes pace throughout the album, and well-placed solos that are not overbearing.

The percussion on ‘Death’s Crown’ is a bit punchy at times, which I found a bit out of place at various points. This did not ruin the album for me, and as I listened on, my ears seemed to adapt to it. Highlight tracks on this effort include “Craving for Blood”, “The Phantom Prince”, and the streaming track below, “Graveyard of Bones”. Be sure to leave a comment on what you thought of the tune – I am definitely interested in your thoughts.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.rawnervezine.co.uk

Image

By Martin Harris

A tale of two genres as death metal and crossover meet, the new material is punishing promising death metal

The Abyss records roster is packed with top quality bands covering a myriad of styles in extreme metal. Astonishingly Radiation Sickness was formed in 1987 and was really spawned at the time when crossover was the new thing thrash, with a plethora of bands jumping the thrash ship in favour of the trendier crossover style. A pack of demos, EPs and splits between 1988 and 1990 ensued, marred by the suicide of founder Ryan Rollins to depression in 1989, but still managing to continue with new members until the band folded in 1992. Fast forward 18 years and RS reformed in 2010 for a reunion show, which must have gone down well with the result being a new album some 20 years on from their last output. The only original band member is Doug Palmer on vocals with new talent being added for the recording of “Reflections Of A Psychotic Past” an album that is really split into two sections, the first being seven new songs that make up the album itself plus a remastered version of the bands “The Other Me - A Journey Into Insanity” EP from 1990.

So onto the new stuff which is brutal and grizzled in sound and kicks off with the title track which clocks in at less than 90 seconds. The vocals have that Martin Van Drunen (Asphyx) terror about their tone, not quite screamed but enough power and ferocity to melt steel. I’m never quite certain that sound samples work in between songs, the last album I liked that did this well was Aborted’s “Engineering The Dead” but this is just a personal preference as “Demented Love Song 2” is grind like initially and drops momentarily to a Slayer riff and the first signs of the bands roots appear by way of a thrash like structure and beat plus a more shouted vocal line. The thrash tag is lost on “Tripping In The Seas Of Madness” which demonstrates a nice catchy vibe and straight pummelling death metal riff and blast. “Graveside View” offers more of the grind I hinted at earlier but this is far from true grind, more to do with the way the song sounds, which on the drum sound borders that clanging snare I find annoying, though I’m being super critical here.

“Erif Ti Pu” is Obituary like death metal, though with blast episodes added for that little bit of extra ferocity. I do wonder when bands have been absent from the scene whether they keep up with what is happening or has happened, as the similarities to other acts is always going to be prevalent whether the band realises it or not. As I said previously this album is a case of two halves with “Erif Ti Pu” ending the new songs and shifting the album into the 1990 release of “The Other Me - A Journey Into Insanity” EP which has been remastered for inclusion here. Now not having heard the bands early days and with this being remastered I can’t compare how the two differ or are similar but one thing is for sure this is not death metal.

Crossover music in the mid 80s was a bit of bugbear with me as it tried to hold onto the thrash audience but gain new fans from the massive hardcore scene that was around from the US, as opposed to the Euro hardcore variety which was far more coarse and more akin to punk and crust, than purist hardcore. In terms of old 80s hardcore I certainly loved the scene, invested in a number of releases and focussed my attention on bands like Attitude Adjustment, Crumbsuckers, The Accüsed, Minor Threat, Cryptic Slaughter to name the major protagonists of the time. Listening to this EP and it is clear that Radiation Sickness was up there with the best of them, with copious amount of bass lines being linked together by short hardcore, ok crossover, riff styles. The vocals were manic, but perfect for the chaotic undertone on the songs. The bass work is very like DRI on their sell out “Crossover” album, though the short blast insertions used are very like the awesome Cryptic Slaughter. Any of the tunes can be compared to the forerunners of the scene back then with “Ruthless” and “Man Made Production” possessing hardcore insanity and thrash riffing complexity equally, which is no easy task. “No Future” has that ominous slow start before the bruising bass hook and subsequent maniacal drum work. “Escape To Insanity” actually starts like Suicidal’s “Institutionalized” song from the self titled debut, even the spoken vocal style is close, but as it progresses I am reminded of yet another nutcase band, but this time from Germany the short lived Chronical Diarrhoea, yes I am being serious, check them out on Metal Archives, (the “Salomo Says” album is mental).

I am faced with a dilemma at this point because the two separate components that make up “Reflections Of A Psychotic Past” are so different I am finding myself drawn more to the older material than the new stuff due to my past life affectations with hardcore. Aside of my own dilemma the music on offer is a before and after and the after should be the focus and for that the release is strong with plenty of creativity displayed that hold steadfast for the next release which won’t be too long hopefully. I wonder if the band will be playing the old stuff with the death metal material live, now that is something I would like watch.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.clandestinemetalzine.cl

Image

By Clandestine Metalzine

Are you looking for real and pure metal? You don't find it here, because ROCKING CORPSES is a hybrid of "metal", a strange mix of blues, Rock and some occational Groove Death Metal riffs. Their vocals mixed clear vocals with ferocius yells (Just like Chris Barnes). Their lyrics are about zombies, black humor and some horrific stories. If you can imagine an entity that is the perfect alloy between DANZIG-LIFE LOVERS & SIX FEET UNDER then I think you already have an idea of what I'm talking. Are you an orthodox metalhead, loyal to the old schol? Then vade retro and please fix your attention on others bands, but if you are a person in search of new sound continously then just go and listen this band, you don't lost anything, but maybe you can win a new favorite band, you never know.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://www.avenoctum.com

Image

By Gizmo

Now stay with me (look at the score if you must) but I have to say that by the time I get to the first few seconds of the second track on Against All Odds, Ireland’s Eternal Helcaraxe have managed to tick three of my pet hates (remember, stay with me, they are so worth it). Firstly what is it with Tolkien and black metal bands (apart from the fact many vocalists sound like orcs…)? It’s about as Christian-centric a mythos as fantasy gets outside of C S Lewis or Elizabeth Moon. Secondly we have the great moody, atmospheric intro that doesn’t feed into the first song, it just stops and the song starts and they have to build the atmosphere all over again. Thirdly where does black metal stop and pagan metal start if you ignore the lyrical stylings?
And the title didn’t fill me with hope either.
OK I’m off my soapbox now and on the clock.
This is the debut full length from Eternal Helcaraxe and I doubt you will find a more assured debut in 2012 this side of Agruss. Seriously; the (well placed) confidence on show here is a joy to behold. Musically they play a style of black/pagan metal that is so epic that it would have Amon Amarth and Turisas looking over their furry shoulders and might even be given a spin by some of the most courageous power metal fans, and yet it retains the gnarly, thrashing, battering soul of the mother genre, thank the gods. Kind of the black metal cousins of the fellow Irish doom inclined Mael Mordha.
After the lovely, melodic into we are kicked into ‘One Still Stands’ which launches a great emotional and epic guitar hook that really does conjure an age of heroes before the snarled vocals come in and the song dives headfirst into some black metal styled attacks. It seems a bit sudden but you quickly get used to following the lovely fluid guitar melodious in and out of these parts. You see at their big heart, Eternal Helcaraxe are a supremely melodic, but not sickly or cheesy, pagan heavy metal band. The vocals are straight black metal, apart from a couple of sections of clean singing which they could think about using more, and they do blast and thrash it up a lot but these songs ride in on great melody and wonderful hooks.
‘Invictus’ is a bit Amon Amarth, yes, but it is still a glorious uplifting song, with a sweep of cinematic, vista opening keyboards just to add the technicolour. Whereas in contrast the nicely titled ‘We Assist Death’ is much more of a howl into the storm until the lengthy guitar lead out. The epic title track shows a narrative grasp that adds depth but never loses sight that this is a song to be played and drowned in. There is complexity as well as hooks so the songs have room to grow as you explore them which bodes will for the longevity of Against All Odds.
These guys do like to batter and howl, make no mistake, but their grasp and use of these huge heroic slabs of melody on songs like ‘As The Snow Gathers’ shifts the band into a whole different genre. I notice that they have shared stages with some high profile black metal bands but they would equally be at home alongside Amorphis, Immortal, Moonsorrow, Tyr or any of the bands mentioned above. They already have their own identity and there is not a single weak composition on this album really.
This is an exemplary debut of melodic, emotionally heavy, chainmail hard, heroic black metal. Fierce, fist pumping, headbanging battle torn stuff. All this and not a fiddle in sight. Against all odds I’ve fallen for this album big time.
Eternal Helcaraxe demand and deserve your attention, oh aye and your money. Get out and buy it. Here’s hoping they get to play in the UK mainland sometime soon.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

I must state up front that I've got a little bit of a bias towards the sound of an album like Composition of Flesh, because it seems as if these Swedes sat down with me and probed my brain to discern exactly what I'm seeking in an 'old school' death metal record. Like being examined by the mental health board at the looney bin. Upon first exposure to the guitar tone, I was a little worried that we'd be getting another direct bite off Entombed, Dismember and their countrymen, a trait I and many others have likely grown some 'fatigue' over, but that turns out not to be the case. While the raw level of putrid distortion might in fact draw a degree of inspiration from Corrosive Carcass' national forebears, they clearly bastardize the aesthetic with elements of US veterans Autopsy, Obituary and (early) Death, with some archaic Finnish sounds (Demilich, etc). The result is nothing short of an all-purpose, dynamic descent into the umpteenth layer of horror.

Composition of Flesh fires on all bony cylinders, strong songwriting skills enshrouded in a tumescent state of eternal darkness. While the band is certainly sniffing along a breadcrumb trail of nostalgia, I never had any sense that they were 'limiting' themselves to any particular palette of necrosis. They incorporate blasting, grooves, and mid-paced rhythmic variation without ever dropping the ball, and they can harry the listener into rapt, fearful attention throughout the entire 41 minutes and 13 tracks of the experience. Deep, dual rhythm guitars grind like a pestle in a mortar of flesh, while the leads are eerie, atmospheric, and never indulgent to the point that they exceed their welcome. The bass feels like a depth charge riddled with beefy distortion, and the drums, while strong, are set at a level which supports the voluminous axe-work. On top of this, you've got a damned solid vocalist in J. Sjöblom whose inflection falls somewhere between a Chris Reifert and L-G Petrov in style. He barks, he growls, he sounds like a pack of hell hounds and pit fiends melted into the psyche of a mortician drunk on formaldehyde fumes.

Lyrically, the band is deceptively simplistic, but I found myself really drawn into the perspective of tracks like the serial killer hymn "Twist of a Knife" or visceral and suicidal "Self Mutilation". Nothing novel as far as the imagery being described, but they certainly evoke an ardent sense of psychosis that matches well with the riffing architecture. Speaking of which, while I can't award points here for much originality, but the Swedes function exceedingly well within the parameters they've established. A few guitar progressions, in particular some of the tremolo sequences, are admittedly generic, but in general I feel like they know how to mix up the selection and keep the listener's focus, whether on a brief burst like "Avatar" or the more extensive finale "The End of Us All", which is close to 8 minutes. There are some amazing moments of atmosphere like the moody intro to "Collector" with its numbing bass and creepy, cleaner guitars, and I would have loved if the band could have more evenly dispersed these through the track list, but otherwise its spot-fucking-on infectious. Combine with the sheen of opaque, drudging production and wallow in the album's gore soaked oblivion. It seems we've been spoiled this year with all manner of fantastic retro death metal recordings, and you can add to this the stockpile of Horrendous, Necrovation and Binah on your next sepulchral excursion.

Verdict: Win [8.75/10] (the shadows guard me well)

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) Interview by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders

If you are looking for bands to check out HYPERBOREAN is one that deserves to be checked out.

Not really having checked out what HYPERBOREAN means I get a feeling of this being technical in both sound and name. Could you please explain the choice of name for the band?

-The meaning of the name is not technical in its nature, it´s mythological. We choose that name thirteen years ago when the band was formed as our lyrics were focused more on topics of that kind.

There used to be a Canadian band called Dead Brain Cells (DBC) that wrote a concept album about the Universe. How fascinated are you with cosmos and the galaxies?

-It´s not really a topic that is relevant to us as a band. On a personal I guess I am fairly interested in scientific discoveries regarding the cosmos but I would never write lyrics for the band on that subject, it lacks intent.

Does being Swedish actually mean anything when you are a metal band?

-We don´t really feel that we need to live up to any specific Swedish metal legacy or anything of the sort. It doesn´t affect us other than sometimes writing lyrics in Swedish.

How did you end up where you are today? What kind of journey has it been so far?

-We started way back in 2000, released three demos. During this time we had allot of line-up and musical direction changes. Then the band was put on hold for a long time until Andreas and I decided to get things going again, and we recorded The Spirit of Warfare which was released in 2011 by Abyss Records. After this we have basically worked on material for a new album and we have just finished the recording of it so that should be out sometime later this year. Now this was a very brief summary, it’s hard to compress 13 years into a few paragraphs; there is a much more in depth biography (in progress) on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HyperboreanSwe for those who are interested.

How pleased are you with your latest record work? What kind of expectations do you have on it?

-We are just finishing the final stages of recording our new album “Mythos of the Great Pestilence”. We are pleased with it, the songs are strong and we are happy with the sound of it. We recorded it in Endarker studio with Devo from Marduk. As for expectations, I really have no idea; I find it is quite pointless to try to foresee these things, but I am of course, interested in seeing how it´s received and I do hope it gets more coverage than the “The Spirit of Warfare” did since it is much superior in every way.

What do you expect to get out of being in a band? Why are you in a band?

-I get allot of satisfaction from working with the music, hearing it grow from an infant state until it´s fully realized in its final form. I enjoy being a part of that process. In fact it´s probably the part I enjoy the most because when you have the raw material you have so many options to take it into different directions, it´s very fulfilling for a creative mind. It is nice to listen to the final product as well, at least if it turns out being good, but I think I enjoy the process the most. Currently we have just finished recording a new album so we have no new material to work with right now and right now I am in a state of mind where I would like to write more but have no material to work with and that can be somewhat frustrating. But it´s probably a good idea to take a little bit of time to rest so you don´t burn out creatively.

What kind of reactions/emotions ran through your bodies when you realized that there are people beside yourself that like what you do?

-I think I cared more about that when I was younger, sure I still get a certain amount of satisfaction if people enjoy the music we create. But our main concern is satisfying ourselves, for example, I spend allot of time researching and writing our lyrics and to be honest, no one, or very few people, care about the lyrics in metal. They prefer to just listen to the music, and that is fine if that’s how you are inclined. But why then spend the time that I do on them? Well I want to be satisfied with what I put forth for no other reason than that I feel I need to do it to be content with it myself. I have always felt like that about lyrics, I write them for myself and in a way I feel the same way about our music in general. Now I don’t mean that we are indifferent to the reactions we get, we´re not and we do try to follow the response our material gets and good feedback is of course nice to get. But I don´t really walk around thinking about other people listening to our music

What is great art work? How important is art work to sell the record?

-Great artwork should be seductive and draw you in. It should create an interest and be connected with the music and the overall lyrical message. If you can manage these things then I believe the artwork is very important. It is a part of giving you the full experience of the album, the entire vision of the band. This you only get if you have a physical copy of an album, and as such, if done well the artwork is one of the better selling points for the physical album as opposed to just digital listening to the music.
Of our past releases I feel that sometimes we have managed this and sometimes we haven’t done so well. For instance our old demo Thorns scared her Soul had artwork that looked good and was filled with symbolical meaning and references to mythological concepts in line with the lyrics. On the other hand, the artwork for our last album missed the mark by quite a bit and turned out to be a poor mess. A fact that in hindsight has made me enjoy the album on a whole less, because you feel there are things that should have been done better. For that reason the importance of artwork goes beyond a mere monetary selling point as a mistake can somewhat corrupt the entire artistic vision. Because of this it is really important to us that we get it right on our new album and we will make sure that we do.

What importance has local bands when you start? Is it important to have bands close by that have made it big to some degree?

-When we started the band it was important, as we were a part of a small local scene that shared both rehearsal room and many members between the different bands. And that existing structure always allowed us to find new members or solve logistical problems when they arose. But that was when we were a full band and when we reformed Hyperborean it became much less important since the band is centred on me and Andreas. But hypothetically of course it would be beneficial to have access to big bands that has “made it”; both for spreading word of mouth and for opportunities to support them live. We never went that route though.

What do you see in the future?

-Well first of all getting the new album out and after that I guess we start working on new material. Unfortunately I don’t think we have any other big revelations. But thanks for the interview and for supporting Hyperborean!

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.metalzone-sfa.com

Image

By Rob

Old Swede! As I pushed our editorial supervisor (in the manner of Mackers on the cover of this treated here Scheibchens) by the way an album that I listen to me according to the command and here is intended to assess. Mucke on ... I hear ... and it pops fully against the curtains! Because here ballert the Swedes band SEPTEKH all musical hypocrisies into the ground.

SEPTEKH were founded in 2008 and leave with "Apollonian EYES" now the second EP release on humanity. The figures playing instruments themselves deserve a closer look considering their extravagant abstruse presentation that does not fit the dogma metalischen fashion and seems to fit the intellectual excesses on their part. What do they have but so testify in her artistic core, which I will hereby worthy:

The infernal party starts with the title track gehirnpenetrierenden " Apollonian EYES " , a full skin in the dark and dirty way in the face. Totally crazy, offbeat riffs and melodies, nonlinear song are accompanied here by a king and a psychopath-spread shock and despondency. A thrashy instrumental perfection, the same look of her.

With " BURN IT TO THE GROUND " then comes the next blow. In the song you think that this could be an interpretation of an old deathmetalische ACCEPT song. A basic rock'n'roll rhythm and sing along animated mitbangen to casual. It is a lyrical call to break out of the cage of shame and smoke out the holes with the army of the enemy "monkeys".

The next attack is hate with " cursing THE SKIES " . Here is the story of a certain Joseph Carey Merrick is treated, known in the Victorian era as Elephant Man. From birth he suffered from severe deformities of his body that completely disfigured his figure and his face. A monster, an example of pathological deformation of the human face, the dead would be better for humanity. A successful musical accompaniment this Diametralität that is forced here by the typical Swedish approach to the blending of death and thrash metal.

The final performance of " Vlad Tepes " is a psychedelic symbiosis of merged Black, Death, Thrash, Black Sabbath and other products hell. Be moved with rapid tempos here go into hypnosis ends mid-tempo passages along. In the text, even the seasoned audience of the guild cringe: An epic poem about a man who puts our cities in ruins, the cut us off the skin from the bones floating in rivers of blood, the .... who will tell us that Vlad Tepes (known to us as Count Dracula) was his whore ....

What a crazy and an awesome musical refreshment! A pity to miss it! The full credit would have been here for a full album, which ties closely to the compositions presented here. SEPTEKH put an exclamation point and appear to be on the battles on the burning fields of metal-combat zones to decide for themselves.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://ondeschocs.com

Image

By Lex Ivian

Septekh is a death / thrash Swedish founded in 2008 which has so far recorded one demo and EP 3 (actually 2 EP since they released "Not quite what I had in mind" in 2009 and have emerged in 2012 on Abyss Records, remastered under the title "The Seth avalanche"). I'm talking about the little one also appeared on Abyss Records in 2013, "Apollonian eyes."

From the outset, the album garroche in a frenetic drumming and shredding and it sets the tone for the four parts. We will have a good thrash. Guys do revolutionize anything but they make parts that are headbanger in the lounge and surely create good moshpits. The four compositions also have slight variations that make interesting listening. Thus, the first is a thrash "straight in your face" as it was in the years 1980 to 1990, the second sailing on the edge of thrash'n'roll with a very catchy chorus that will banger fists in the air , "Cursing the skies" which explores sound more death / thrash, is probably their most complex part with "stop and go" inserted in the chorus "Blastbeat" and finally the last riffs reminiscent of the old black Bathory allowing enjoy a good shredding riffs and a little more epic. Moreover, throughout the album, the voice a little "shrieké" bring the feeling of a black wave in the atmosphere Emperor or Bathory precisely. To help you discover, I send you the entire album, taken from youtube channel Abyss Records.

As I said earlier, Septekh not invent anything, but we find a way to make us a thrash EP is varied and touches on death and black. Oh, by the way, they also have a little look "gentleman of the 19th century" with beautiful damn mustache. Hell Yeah!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.metallized.it

Image

By Daniele Cicero "Black Face"

Where Hope Turns Dripping Red is the first full length of the Swedes Dead Awaken , two musicians passionate about what they might be called War Metal, reminding groups that the theme of war have made ??it the dominant theme in their lyrics, like Bolt Thrower or Sodom .
After a long series of demos dating back to 2002, the Dead Awaken fail to get a major contract with Abyss Records , bring together all their ideas and form Where Hope Turns Dripping Red , a work of death metal fast, very technical, aimed at gassing the listener with the use of rhythmic terribly engaging. The music of the Swedes is very American. Very reminiscent of the Californian brutal death scene, with acceleration shipped supported by plettrate alternating infinite bpm or dissonant phrasing in the background while trying to chase down a blast beat fast as lightning; accelerations are often limited by break down as dizziness or a rhythm section that highlights each particular song Where Hope Turns Dripping Red in a particular and distinct. 's voice has nothing unique, unfortunately, the growl of Jörgen Kristensen is very hoarse and violent, suitable for the style, but the tone is always maintained on the same modulation, changing shades too rarely. But it soon becomes clear that the style of Dead Awaken is more focused on the tools on the item, and feels. While the vocal performance is standard, similar to many other groups, the guitar, bass and drums is treated in detail and brings sharply into relief. songs are all to listen more than pleasantly, each is distinguished by a peculiar feature , which may be the main riff catchy, a particular rhythm or a rousing chorus. Among all, however, we highlight Kingdom of Damnation (Where Hope Turns Dripping Red) , Deutsches Afrika Corpse , Rocket Symphony , Venom of the Population and the final State of Corrosion . If in the future we will see an improvement on vocals and maybe a little 'more of originality, the Dead Awaken will easily become a point of reference in the world of death.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://metalmouth.net

Southwicked started when Allen West (formally a member of Obituary and Six Feet Under) and Marco Vreven decided to start a new band.

A couple of months later they were working on some songs and recorded a demo tape in the Red Room Studio’s in Ybor City. Rock Rollain (Kult of Thorn) joined the forces and he placed some mighty fine bass lines on the songs. Days before the first gig, they asked Sven Poets from Shattered Skull (BE) to join the forces. He learned everything in 3 days and was accepted as a band member after a successful first show.

The album properly begins with “Deaths Crown” kicking in with all the trademark guitar excellence that you would expect from this power packed super heavyweight band with stunning guitar work, matched by rage infused vocals taking the brutal to the bowels of Hell and back.

“Crawling for Blood” continues with the with a more guttural spoken word theme to it before a Watainesque beat down kicks in and slips the gear stick into mosh mode.

“Killing Spree” follows the same pattern before “The Phantom Prince” kicks straight of into high octane, guitar driven brutality with slamming riffs and slow, measured destructive vocals.

“Graveyard of Bones”, “Charming Karma”, and “Green River Killing Fields“ slow the pace down, slightly placing more emphasis upon the destructive vocals bringing out an almost sinister edge to them.

Bonus track “The Only Living Witness” closes the album of with an early thrash driven Metalica feel to it, before the brutal vocals of Sven Poets take over pushing this bruising song to the next level.

Overall with Death’s Crown, Southwicked have produced one of the most brutally destructive albums of the year. For a debut album the standards that they have set themselves with this are shockingly high.

Make a note of their name now as Southwicked are going to be huge.

Highlight of the e.p: “The Only Living Witness”

Rating: 8/10
