DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD / LP review by http://www.zwaremetalen.com

Image

By Bart Alfvoet

I can hardly restrain me to write this review. I did not know this Swedish duo Markus single Joha's former band Machinery rang a bell. The Passing is an extremely memorable and bang hard thrash album. This Desultor , well ... it is equally memorable.

Where do I start? First the "obvious" states: the vocals sound like that of Warrel Dane of Nevermore , in style then. It's querulous melodramatic, it vibrates and skips and is imploring progressive. Only clean vocals on Master of Hate anyway (with some aggressive thrashgesnauw here and there), which in combination with the music is quite remarkable. Musically it bang hard neo-thrash metal with death and black metal influences. A constant driving mix of all kinds of extreme riffs - from catchy to black gerag - fed by continuous blas tendencies violence à la Tim Yeung. It is therefore not strange that I was reminded of the "ultra tight" album on this album Tactical of World Under Blood , last year discussed by colleague Dirk de Boer. Only the Master of Hate even worked up!

Nothing feints, this is straight blow with a sublime combination in which the two men let go. Together completely turns Should something uitgewerkter and varied sound in the vocal hooks and then this was a 90 +. So there is progress possible!

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://www.zwaremetalen.com

Image

By Yves Pilgrims

If you do not know the concept or can barely pronounce usually refers within the black metal to some occult state, or for something that has to do with Tolkien. The second option is for this young Irish black metal band Eternal Helcaraxe . With this debut Against All Odds they bring a good fifty minutes of melodic black.

It is black level of the old In Flames , but not quite. This drive is also called in, but Eternal Helcaraxe brings gentler. This is mainly due to the keyboard-dominant influence within this band, but also by the melodic sophistication that occurs here and there, and acoustic level and within the harder work. In general, do you, if you compare it with material from their own soil, think of a mix of Thurisaz with Signs of Darkness . In particular, the contribution of the clean vocals here and there lay an emphasis that resembles something of that first band. The rest of the screams lean to what these two bands, with here and there some slightly hoarse Saba Than sounds (old Enthroned ) through. In addition, the beginning of Invictus also very beautiful and soothing brought hurry tokkels reminiscent of Neige but obviously transferred to fairly basic melodic metal. The most interesting songs and start these musicians in more constructive play. Together on especially towards the end

Nothing new, not very varied, but all have fine to follow. Most of these numbers leaves you with all the shiny material that today passes within the melodic black metal world are just links, but you may actually be happy that not even a band Dissection opwandelt path. A good middle position that will rotate within this world good. Maybe just some screws to the warmth and quality of the guitar sound and the ticking drum sound that retune.

Rating: 76/100

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by http://www.zwaremetalen.com

Image

By Yves Pilgrims

For those who recently ran hot from the last installment of Deathhammer is again good news. Septekh is from Sweden and also brings a dusty suit thrash, death metal only with a strong pulse. A solid twenty minutes to oldschool material they bring with The Seth Avalanche .

Fans of ancient Kreator or the old Sarcofago wild jamming of these Swedes know what to bring. With Fuckslut From Hell is the tone right away indicated: Raw recordings, oily atmospheres and a heavy bass sound on thrash-level charged. In other tracks, such as Blunt Force To The Head , lingering death metal is then the main note. Delicious also how those bass buzzes on Eating The Maneater , bad for your fillings. Septekh lags especially monotonous sound, but in the raw singing style of Nils Meseke sounds a power pack, which just this genre needs. Whoever listens, also craves a suit aggression to this thumping raw give. Taste what A description where Septekh fine to comply. Melody is janetten, live the chaos!

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.zwaremetalen.com

Image

By Bart Alfvoet

Sweden has also unknown bands. This Septekh for example. This EP is number three of the filthy thrashers that only too happy to put a violent party on legs. This time a little more than fifteen minutes.

There can be found in the numbers of three distinct elements back Septekh . The first is the typical deathrash in Sweden triumphed times back like no other. The hard rocking Witchery , the aggressive and melodic The Crown and the crackling hard Defleshed . The second element is the raw - unpolished - alcohol thrash from Norway, where Septekh also the blacke elements and hollow bass stolen. Thirdly, there is a pronounced heavy / speed metal-attitude noticeable à la Venom , even the sound is (apart from the brombas) that way every now and then. It is not always successful, though I quite enjoy the blending of "older" styles. Try it also as the bands listed ring a bell. Even in the Swedish deathrashers hangs an impending nostalgia in the air. Who knows Abyss Records of Angrepp know what they can expect.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://newnoisemagazine.com

Image

By Eric May

If you’re looking for a solid death metal band, then I couldn’t see why you’d have a problem with this talented three-piece of death metal musicians known as Dead Awaken. The drumming is especially important in good death metal and that’s where I feel this band is at its strongest and where this disc truly delivers. The man on the kit is an absolute beast, absolutely killing it on intro to “Deutsches Afrika Corpse” and blasting this album right into oblivion. These guys pull no punches with elements of death/groove featured on “Mudhell” and much slower brooding numbers like “Rocket Symphony.” The formula is gravel, drums and a whole lot of chaos that sounds great, especially after a hard day at work. You’ll hear influence from Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Dying Fetus and others in their very straight-forward, yet still refreshing approach to death metal that surprisingly doesn’t sound like too much of a carbon copy and really gets the head banging and the horns up. The approach is tried and true, and the results speak for themselves. Give these guys a shot and I promise that you won’t be disappointed. True death metal after all; never disappoints.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by New Noise Magazine

Image

By Eric May

Septekh’s second EP offers even more potential than their first, which says a lot because I’ve considered these guys a major band to watch for quite a while now. Apollonian Eyes seems like a mere warm-up for a future album that’s going to no doubt revolutionize the entire spectrum of the death/thrash scene, despite the band’s odd getup which might bring you disbelief about the statement I’ve just made. But we must keep in mind that image does not make a band, talent does; which is what these gentlemen have offered with just these four tracks – loads of talent. The riffs are unconventional, yet contain a bit of Norwegian frost; and the drums sound like they’re about to burst into flames more than half the time. This is the kind of thing that one expects from the genre and in less than twenty minutes, Septekh deliver it on a silver platter. These guys seriously do not give even one hint of a fuck when it comes to unleashing their fury and with lyrics of such an unprecedented nature, you’ve not only got a beast that’s run rampant, but the remnants of a ravaged cage scattered about where it clawed its way to realms unparalleled in metal music. Whether it’s the uncompromising thrash of the title track “Apollonian Eyes” or the fact that you’ve still got the lyric “Vlad Tepes was my bitch” stuck in your head an hour later from the disc’s closer “Vlad Tepes”, you know that you’ve just heard a memorable act in Septekh. This band just keeps getting better and I highly await the band’s next release after this miniature masterpiece. Oh, and Vlad Tepes was my bitch too.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by This Noise Is Ours

Image

By James Williams

Swedish death metal trio Dead Awaken have recently unleashed a debut album via Abyss Records. Dead Awaken have been going since 2002 and after multiple demo's, have honed their sound and have released this record. Taking their influences from the savage death of Vomitory and Suffocation, as well as the dark imagery of Celtic Frost and Triptykon, they've got a lot to offer extreme metallers everywhere.

Tracklist:-
1. Carnivore
2. Kingdom of Damnation (Where Hope Turns Dripping Red)
3. Deutsches Afrika Corpse
4. Rocket Symphony
5. Mudhell
6. Manic Destructive
7. Envy The Dead
8. Venom of The Population
9. State of Corrosion

With most death metal, you know what you're getting. Razor-sharp guitars, thrashing drums and low guttural vocals. Dead Awaken are no different. Plying their trade in a genre that seems to be overflowing can be difficult, but Dead Awaken stick to a formula that they know people want. Carnivore opens proceedings in the best way possible, by absolutely ripping you apart and not letting up. It's only towards the end of the track that Dead Awaken slow things down. The drums groove like nobodies business during Kingdom of Damnation. The vocals are almost gargled as they're delivered and the pinch harmonics add the occasional bite of variation. Rhythmically it's perfect, with the drums holding station while the other instrumentation keeps up.

Deutsches Afrika Corpse is where things start to change. Dead Awaken step away from their opening blueprint slightly. Instead of just focusing on out and out sonic destruction, they inject subtle melody and pace changes, which give the listener more to hold onto. Don't get me wrong though, it's still utterly savage! The low-end makes it's presence known as well, with the bass rumbling underneath the guitar and adding extra weight. Rocket Symphony is probably the closest you'll get to one, as the pace is slower and with the longer song length, it seems more thought-out and experimental. There are some great, simple riffs in it as well. The first hint of a guitar solo comes towards the end of the song too, nestled within chuggy riffs. The music carries on in the same vein during Mudhell.

The production is good, but due to a lot of the music being in the same key, it can get a bit hypnotic at times. If you're after loads of melody, you won't get it here. Where Hope Turns Dripping Red is all about face melting, old-school death metal! If you can cope with massive amounts of kick-drum them Manic Destructive is your song. It may only be just over two and half minutes long but it rips, especially the squealing solo mid-way through. Dead Awaken then flatten you with their final three songs, Envy The Dead, Venom of The Population and State of Corrosion. They fly past in a whirlwind of double bass and chainsaw-like guitars. The guttural vocals remain constant throughout and threaten to send you to hell.

I've not heard a death metal record like this for a long time. It's rare that band just settles in and goes for it for an entire album, as they normally throw in some clever jazzy gubbins, but not Dead Awaken. They just blast like the bands that influenced them did. If you're after some straight-up and insane death metal, look on further than these guys.

Now as a treat, I have the pleasure of streaming "Kingdom of Damnation (Where Hope Turne Dripping Red)" on my bandcamp page. The album isn't currently streaming, so it is one of the only place you can here the song without buying the record. Check it out here: http://thisnoiseisours.bandcamp.com/tra ... ipping-red

If you like it and want to hear more, you can pick up the album from Abyss Records at http://www.officialabyssrecords.com/.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By George "Kelenmar" Vassiliadis

Good Death Metal debut Dead Awaken Swedes who play old classic Death Metal cutting, reminding pretty style scene of Stockholm with some minimal modernism and little Thrashy feeling in some cases, but the band is not only that. The very good thing here is that the band draws influence from bands which ultimately alloy as it sounds, it seems quite interesting and a bit original (the original course can be heard today in the year 2013, when a band influences homogenized so much and all look the same ... Anyway to detail shown here is a little difference). Specifically here we will hear MAIN Vomitory, Suffocation, Deicide, Behemoth and less Morbid Angel and Grave. Certainly any hope for something really grand off abruptly as synthetics do not have the transcendence and the pieces are a little flat, keeping a dignity and starting a respectable percentage dynamism than outside. Perhaps, and most likely, this apparent lack of power be due to the somewhat not so bulky but instead somewhat more treble. Technically the band seems to be complete and very easy to pass the floor from one instrument to another and everything sounds pretty clean (no matter that surely there is room for improvement in sound). In particular there are some pieces that stand out. In most riff tracks the band seems to have much better (Sweds being Sweds) and specifically in "Deutsches Afrika Corspes", "Manic Destruction" and "State of Corrosion" while most Blackizon "Venom of the Population" I believe is the best disc, which in pick lead within fractions has become Deicidiko epic. Finally, a striking theme of influences and ideas mating experience but which in practice is just good. Definitely ticked by most fans of as it has moments that deserve it.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By Alexander Konstantourakis

Dynamite. The only way to explain what happens in the third EP by Sweden, when suddenly gets from his face the title track of the album "Apollonian Eyes". Hate and passion for war and havoc without considering anything and anyone. Blackend Death / Thrash with influences from Kreator, Darkthrone and little Marduk; I gave you a picture of the mess that prevails in this case. The four pieces that make up the album are one and one, incredibly drums, not limited only to blast beats and touching pretty good speeds, the guitars on the other play in several camps, tapping riff-case law of Thrash / Death and Black Metal, with characteristic cold atmosphere they create. The lyrics on the other fit the theme but the background music, managing to raise even more effect on my mind. I searched enough to find something not to like, to excuse and I kinda grumpy in my character, but I did not find anything worthwhile. So there remains nothing else than to wish them have corresponding future.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) Interview by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders

Irish ETERNAL HELCARAXE really deserves your attention if you haven’t already given them it. Start with reading this Interview filled out by Tyrith.

I’ve been thinking about your name. I understand the ETERNAL part but I’m not so sure about the HELCARAXE one. What does the combination of these two words mean?

-The word “Helcaraxe” means “Grinding Ice” in ancient Elvish, when we added “Eternal”, we felt it was very fitting to the sound of the name and our music.

Is it even possible to explain the greatness of Tolkien to somebody that hasn’t read the books or seen the movies? Why are so many metal bands Tolkien devotees?

-No I dont think it is, And I dont think its just metal bands, People from all mediums, books, films, t.v, are highly inspired from his great work, and also Peter Jacksons visual take from the books in the movies too,

Your album’s been out a while now. What kind of reactions have you had to it so far?

-All positive, Reviews have been great and live versions of the songs are going down very good live too, We haven’t heard anything back negative from it yet!

Now that you have had time to live with it what plans do you have for the next one to make it even better and grander?

-We only ever set out to write the best possible songs that we can at the time and we are hard at work working on a new batch of songs at this moment now too, That will hopefully be as well recieved as ‘Against all odd’s’ was.

What have been your intentions with ETERNAL HELCARAXE? How well has these matched with reality?

-The Intention always has been to be the best songwriters and band that we can be and we will always strive to live up to that.

How important is presentation to you? Does the way you dress for promo shots fit with the way the album cover looks like? Does the lyrics have to fit with the music?

-The music will always be the first priority for us but yeah we thinks its important to look like you made an effort for promo pics and we think it suits what we play and looks good live.

What does it mean to be a metal band coming from Ireland? Is there something in the Irish culture that you can use to your advantage as a metal band?

-There is no advantage of being a metal band from Ireland, Only a handful have ever had some recognition or decent exposure outside the country, but hopefull that will change as there is a lot of great bands from here, But we do have a country that has gone through poverty, famine, a lot of political turmoil resulting in a lot of lives lost for different causes and a country that is rich in history and storytelling, so there is a lot of inspiration to be drawn form living here.

What kind of metal scene is there on Ireland? How inclusive is it?

-The metal scene here is still small but strong with a lot of great bands that deserve recognition- Celtachor, Wound upon wound, Dichotomy, Dark_matter, Dead Aeon.

Ireland is often thought of being in the shadow of the Great British Empire. It that something that still lives on, that the Irish see themselves as the underdogs?

-No we don’t feel that at all, we are our own strong independent country. There is a lot of history between both countrys good and bad but we have moved on but will never forget the past. It has made us the country we are today, and has made us stronger and very proud to be Irish too.

What else do you plan for the future?

-We have lots planned, We are re-recording songs of our first recording for a ‘To whatever end’ Re-release, And plan to do a song for a special 7” release and are hard working on songs for the next album too.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by This Noise Is Ours

Image

By James Williams

My laptop has been doing all kinds of weird things lately, from freezing to going really slowly. Even Itunes has been odd, with songs jumping at certain points, just like CD's used to do in hi-fi's. Anyway, it hasn't stopped me from updating the blog and I sincerely hope it settles down soon. So, this is the latest four track EP by Swedish death/thrash band Septekh, that was released earlier this year by Abyss Records. This is their second EP in as many years as well.

It's rare that I feature bands who like to assume a certain presence or character set when onstage and in the eyes of their fans. Septekh are one such band though. They look like old military gents from the time when war ravaged Europe. When playing live, they even have their own make-up artist!

Tracklist:-
1. Apollonian Eyes
2. Burn It To The Ground
3. Cursing The Skies
4. Vlad Tepes

Apollonian Eyes contains four track of brutal, ravaging death thrash. Starting with the title track, Septekh waste little time in going straight for your jugular with their sharpened bayonet. That bayonet features furious instrumentation and shrieked deathly vocals. The drums and guitars keep an extreme pace all the way through, with little melody imposing itself. The only real treble you get is from the screeching guitar mid-way through. Burn It To The Ground has a great galloping rhythm to it and it's where Septekh's thrash influences being to really shine through. I can definitely see this song inciting some great pits live! These guys do not hang about and the solo towards the end of the song is a wailing beast.

Septekh inject more melody into later songs, thanks to some great lead guitar works and different layers. They may be playing a form of death metal that's been overdone of late, but they are playing with huge energy and enthusiasm, which can't help but make you smile when you listen. That's certainly the case with Cursing The Skies anyway. Vlad Tepes rounds out the EP. This song is more progressive than the EP's previous numbers, with some more excellent lead guitar work and less of the gung-ho attitude. It has some Middle-Eastern flair to it as well, in the sound and some of melodies played by the guitar.

Death/thrash may only appeal to fans of more extreme metal, but Apollonian eyes will surely appeal to a wider audience and gain Septekh new followers, thanks to it's good time feel.

Closing song Vlad Tepes, is streaming on my bandcamp page for a limited time. Listen to it here:- http://thisnoiseisours.bandcamp.com/track/vlad-tepes

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://www.burningblack.net

Image

By AP

“Against All Odds” is the first full length and latest release of this Irish Black Metal quartet, which after a couple of years of silence following their excellent EP debut “To Whatever End” (self-released in 2010) finally reappears and unleashes eight new tracks of high quality Epic Black Metal… This album continues what was shown in the band’s previous EP “To Whatever End”, that is to say, traditional mid paced Black Metal structures, combined with some intense and somewhat tragic melodic traces complemented by epic keyboard atmospheres, which results in a highly effective proposal, as it was demonstrated on “To Whatever End”… Besides of all the elements we already heard on the band previous effort, “Against All Odds” seems to feature a harsher and obscurer Black Metal sound, which is reflected at this album’s corrosive blasting passages, heavily contrasting with the subtle melodic elements that creates the overall epic aura of this record, just listen to crushing tracks such “We Assist Death” and “Shadows Of The Wolf”, these tracks perfectly reflect the outstanding conjugation between traditional Black Metal obscurity and epic melodies Eternal Helcaraxe creates at this album. The production here is completely powerful and clear sounding, while the mixing is balanced and just as immaculate as the production and the whole musical execution requires. Overall “Against All Odds” is an incredibly solid album, those who listened to the band’s previous release will be certainly pleased to see how the band has expanded its proposal in an obscurer direction maintaining their characteristic epic atmosphere and melodic sound… Anyone into the epic Black Metal sound, especially those who enjoy the sound of pioneers of the genre such Immortal, early Enslaved and of course Bathory, should definitely take a listened to this album, “Against All Odds” is a magnificent, obscure and powerful piece of Black Metal completely worthy of attention.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://metalitalia.com

Image

By Claudio Luciani

That sound "bastard" have the Swedes Dead Awaken: debut after eleven long years since the founding of the group, we deliver this compendium of "slap in the face" which is their first album "Where Hope Turns Red". Eleven years of work, of course, they teach many things: mainly how you work in the right way the pieces that do not look like the classic songs from a debut album, as everyone already mature and constructed according to a compositional formula of its own, we would say "cut out measure "for the occasion, or nearly so. If "Carnivore", in fact, dominates the attack modulated on different registers of speed, elsewhere - as in "Deutsches Afrika Corpse - is proudly displayed a groove that might remember it the combination Hail Of Bullets / Bolt Thrower, while in "Kingdom Of Damnation" you can almost hear the thrash / punk that counterbalances the "intricature" of songs like "Venom Of The Population", also embellished by a beautiful and unexpected melodic opening, all Swedish, which ends up making it - probably - the best of the lot. Of course there are common traits among the various compositions: the good management of tempo changes and rhythmic variations ("Rocket Symphony" is one example); riff ever "cool" and faces the massacre (so as to give all the work atmosphere "epic" from endless war); constant references to sound American, sublimated in the riff of "Mudhell" (reminiscent of a Swedish version of Suffocation more straight), or - finally - the dynamic that emerges in the most overbearing from "State Of Corrosion". Wanting to be honest all the way also happens to find some fault, even if minimal, as the tendency to dilate a hair more than the rhythmic parts, so that sometimes they can ask the basis for questions mowed in extremis from "corrective" changes or variations. If you like the Grave, which are the most "American" of the SDF (Swedish Death Four, if you can not shiver ...), you have to listen to these Dead Awaken, also because of the provision at absolutely instrumental, for guaranteed precision and incisiveness despite not exceed in particular virtuosity.

SINCERA (Norway) "Cursed and Proud" DIGI CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Tania Giménez

Sincerity is a band of "blackened" Norwegian death metal veterans have given the scene in his training and now releases her debut album, "Cursed and Proud," which is formed by subjects of their demo (never published) " Tall and Proud "and also a few live cuts to taste what you are genuinely sincere.

To be a Norwegian compact, the truth is that the tracks on this "Cursed and Proud" to give off an aroma American Death Metal, with a blunt and heavy sound and batteries that go through all kinds of rhythms (slow tempos more fast and also several blastbeats), although this never stop to flirt with different genres and different scenes walk through global extreme, sounding at times reminding ROTTING CHRIST or more than one occasion DISSECTION Swedes. The bass has a very strong presence, which fits perfectly with the battery, thus creating a really solid rhythm section. The guitar riffs off a metalhead black sentiment, while the synths perfectly complement the dark atmosphere (in fact seem to use just for this purpose) of training, giving them a sound very old school. If we return to the guitars have the same dinan the battery, from slow chords, part-time or a really fast-paced riffs that mix with the Black Death of-factly, adding also really dark environments.

All this is surrounded by voices that sounds like Black Metal, quite sharp cries that are mistaken sometimes grunts, spoken parts and even some clean vocals.

In terms of production, the truth is that they have done a good job, since it is easy to distinguish no problem reamente all instruments, which have their own esparacio breathing, but not lose touch a raw, especially in the songs live.

If you like bands like FESTER, SINCERA comply with your expectations. And this is a very good training for Black / Death

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) "Chalice of Black Flames" CD EP review by http://www.metalchroniques.fr

Image

By Aske

Chaossworn has been formed in 2004, in Sweden by Anton Johansson, singer and rhythmic guitar and Niklas Pelli on a Drum, then completed by Andreas Pelli in the bass guitar and Janne Posti in the guitar, the group realizes two demos Enthropic Human Nature in 2005 then Whores of Mankind in 2008. An entitled MCD Black Earth Funeral will follow closely, at the beginning of year 2009.
That we say it to ourselves, Chalice Of Black Flames banks of entrance on the quality and not on the quantity. It is here about an EP consisted of three titles masterised by the famous Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity, Opeth, Dissection, Marduk) in his Swedish studio ( Unisound).
Sweden besides its charms which we all know (I think naturally of the natural environment, ,lakes, forests, you will have understood) is used to producing a lot of metal band, but, which have, seems to me t-il, the defect of their quality, that to propose a clear and massive sound, with walls of guitar in reinforced concrete! let us not tell of story, it is not of it question of which it is at Chaossworn.
First of all, a first piece " Crowned and Winged " which opens the hostilities by delivering rhythmic one solid, lively but without the other claim than to make stamp. The band is supported by melodic guitars which progress towards bridges and tunes entêtants, glaucous, sometimes complex, with a very collected sound, close to the first ones Opeth. In brief an organic aspect, which is not without displeasing your servant. The tunes are there, the pieces have all, without exception, this fantastic potential for the stage, in live.
The second title much more black "Bringer Of Storms" sends blasts and lightning round trips to the Swedish vein. We definitively want to go up the sound completely and to start a pogo (it's a pity, the neighbor does not agree !). The sound of guitars is very personal, always worried, overloaded with the melody.
The third and last eponymic title "Chalice Of Black Flames" the slowest and the most complex, offers, in my opinion, the most personal side of the group, dense furious and federated by furious shouts. Guitars burst out definitively and the lines of drum, saccadent as the piece progresses. We are completely crushed by these riffs, very easily memory, which gives excellent punches to the listener.
Thus here is an excellent EP to get itself immediately, by hoping that the group proposes concerts to make us drink in his "Chalice".

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.metalstorm.net

Image

By Doc Godin

Fester? A Celebration Of Death?...Damn, here comes more generic death met...Wait a minute, this can't be right; old school, yet fresh sounding? Well, maybe "fresh" might not be the right word, as this album is grimy as shit, maybe just..."not generic" is a better way of putting it.

All the pieces to A Celebration Of Death are fairly used, but the whole thing is brought together with such personality none of the attempts at creating that nasty, evil feeling are failures. Fester play this sort of raw mix of (mostly) down-tempo black & death metal. A bit slower, but always quite at that doomster level, just a good marching pace. This slightly slower feel to the whole thing really just showcases the incredibly dark riffs here. So what's the kicker? What makes this album particularly special? The only thing that comes to mind is the subtle industrial undertones shown throughout that help complete that cold, hard sound. Other than that, it's just a solid, convincing job mixing infectious riffs with a deep, horrific atmosphere.

It's all good. There's nothing on here that specifically needs improvement, yet it's not quite what you would call a knock-out album. Maybe a little more identity in the individual components of this band is what's needed. As a collective, these guys have a fairly unique sound, but there's nothing here that really stands above anything else. No focal point I guess you could say. Granted, not having your music revolve entirely around one instrument is a good thing, but having something shine a bit from time to time is nice.

A Celebration Of Death is a tasteful, experienced sounding album. Safe enough to be appealing to a more basic desire for extreme metal, yet fresh new sounding enough to not be flavourless.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) "The Spirit of Warfare" CD review by http://www.metalreviews.com

Image

By Alex

When the Abyss Records are saying that their new signing Hyperborean demos were well received, I am in agreement. After all I should know, as I am in possession of all three of them dating back to 2002 Of Malice. After a long break of six years since their last demo, Prey, the Swedes are back with their full-length release The Spirit of Warfare.

Oh how the times have changed for Hyperborean. I still have the photograph with what seemed to be a bunch of young romantics which came with Of Malice. That lineup completely revamped, Hyperborean of 2011 has had a style overhaul as well. Forget the melodic death/black/thrash from Of Malice, gone are female vocal inserts in the style of old In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, there is no trace of any gothic inklings from Thorns Scar Her Soul, but the remainder of Hyperborean (what I surmise are vocalist Magnus Persson and guitarist Andreas Blomquist) remains to be interested in the subject first approached on their last 2005 demo Prey, i.e. military history, especially as it pertains to Europe and war upheavals of that continent in the distant and more recent past.

Suitably then, the youthful exuberance and enthusiasm of Hyperborean earliest works is replaced with razor sharp, shrill, but extremely cleanly produced militaristic harshness, firmly on display in Viper and Channeling the Spirit of Warfare. War conflicts are a vicious subject and Hyperborean music lives the part. The clean tremolo cuts to the bone and drums blast when needed. The songs like Killing Grounds present an ominous, even if fleeting, feeling.

At the same time, Hyperborean can inject mournful pain into their melodic tremolo (A New Sun Rises) or come up with their own personal touch by weaving in very prominent piano lines, absolutely unexpectedly, into the massive wall-of-sound guitar parts in Weapon Mankind and The Sick Man of Europe. Those piano moments are gripping cold fingers of fear permeating the souls of men who march to their death. If earlier Hyperborean looked to the aforementioned melodic death/thrash of In Flames and Dark Tranquillity for influence, nowadays the band is a more direct comparison to Necrophobic and Lord Belial. Hyperborean compositions, now significantly longer and going through a number of parts and tempos, can be towering in their blackened symphonic grandeur, just like The Last Stand of Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae does lashing out at the listener after a softer intro. Acoustic tenderness and melodic solo in the middle of that composition only accentuate the symphonic approach to harsh extreme music subscribed to now by Hyperborean.

The criticism could be that this style of cleaner, well produced melodic black/death metal with symphonic touches has long come and gone through its peak, and Hyperborean are trying to catch the train which is now long departed. I would point out that the band’s vision of their lyrical subject, the Erich Maria Remarque of sorts, is very suitable to the style of music they play, but in my opinion the melodic suit fits Hyperborean so well, they don’t have to discard it all in favor of martial bleakness and austerity.

NONEXIST (Sweden) Interview by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders

NONEXIST is one of these bands that seem to lurk in my consciousness somewhere but I can’t really access the file. But here’s an interview anyway.

Although I try to keep up I still can’t keep track of all Swedish metal bands. Could you please introduce yourself shortly to me?

-Yes, sure! Nonexist was formed in 2000 when I had just signed with WAR-music, a label here in Sweden, with Andromeda. I had made some demos of songs more in the death/thrashmetal vein which interested WAR as well. So I signed a contract without having any members, just the songs, pretty weird!
Then Liiva had just left Arch Enemy and moved back to the same town as the WAR-boss Wez lived and they knew each other since the time Arch Enemy was on Wrong Again Rec. which was Wez’s old label. So Liiva was asked if he wanted to join Nonexist and he did! Then the label also contacted drummer Matte Modin – then in Defleshed and Dark Funeral – who played on our debutalbum “Deus Deceptor” which was recorded in Abyss studios in November 2001 and released about six months later. Then the band fell into inactivity since we were all busy with our other bands.
I continued to write Nonexist-songs though during the years to come and in 2011 the band was resurrected as I wrote the album “From My Cold Dead Hands” and Liiva got back on the mic. We signed with Pivotal Rockordings for a digital release of the album and then also with Abyss Rec. and Trooper Entertainment – for Japan – for physical release.
In the studio we do the band as a duo with me and Liiva. Live we have Linus Abrahamson from Andromeda on bass and Joakim Strandberg-Nilsson and Johan Aldgård on drums and guitar, both of them play in Faithful Darkness.

Ever since the 80s Swedish metal has been treasured but now Sweden is leading the pack. Does that fact help you in getting the band noticed?

-Hmm, maybe? I don’t know for sure though.

What would you say has been the single most important factor in NONEXIST sound the way you do?

-Our original mix of influences. Plus Liiva’s majestic, unique voice pf course!

When you have a record to promote what is it that you expect it to do? What kind of expectations do you have and what is realistic to expect it to do?

-Since Nonexist has been away from the scene for a long time we don’t have that big expectations right now. We’re building the band up again and album number three is already in the making, halfway through approximately!

How pleased are you with your latest recorded work? How does this compare to your other material?

-We are very pleased indeed! I think compared to the first album there is more diversity and even more brutality. We have expanded our style by adding some clean vocals, some blackmetal influences and more blast-beats. Also I think the production is better on “From My Cold Dead Hands” – it’s more clear and sharp.

With so many bands, not only Swedish, around and so many social media sites how do you know which one to go for when you‘re promoting your band?

-Facebook mainly and youtube!

How should you rate the interest you get from social media sites? What does it mean in the real world if you gets thousands of thousands likes?

-It does give some kind of indication of your popularity but of course it doesn’t give you the whole picture.

The live scene seems to be more and more about big package tours or festivals. How do you as band get to play live? How important is playing live today?

-It’s hard yes. We’ve had some offers to do tours as the opening act but had to turn them down because they cost too much money. That’s really sad… I think it’s more important than ever to play live and spread your name and do merchandise sales which is almost the only income left in the music business.

Is having an image a great way of setting yourself apart from all the other bands?

-Yes, that could attract fans for sure. I’ve always shunned those kinds of bands though, like Kiss for example, where the music comes second. But sure – it can enhance the overall impression of the band and also – the music. Like a great stage show for example.

If you were to predict the future for NONEXIST what would it look like?

-A new album every other year, tours, glory and booze!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By Conner

Upon receiving this cd I wasn't too sure what to expect, the logo, title and cover work didn't really give too much away. I would hazard a guess and say that the theme throughout this CD is war. And with war comes death. Ha I was right. These guys hail from Sweden and whilst most embrace their native sound, these guys embrace sounds like that of Suffocation, Morbid Angel and perhaps Bolt Thrower with some Cannibal Corpse in the mix.

It's damn heavy with a real heavy production, that really is drum heavy but with a huge sounding bass right up the spine of the recording. I like the drums for they don't sound too triggered and everything on them sounds quite live. This is really cool because you don't really hear that so much this days. The guitars are very clear and precise and executed with some finesse. The overall sound is quite thunderous really. The songs are launched at my eardrums like a shell from a tank and explode from my speakers. The vocals are real deep and delivered with great venom and anger on a background of huge riffs and machine gun drumming. The momentum of this record is very very up beat, packed with massive pit ready grooves and brutal blast sections.

Above all else, it's catchy as hell. There's abit of old school speed metal/thrash in the mix which nods to the likes of Sodom from the early 90s period. There's a real cool feel of this record I have to say from opener 'Carnivore' to closer 'State Of Corrosion'. Sure these guys aren't nothing new by any means but what they've got here is an absolutely cracking brutal death metal record. Check this out and don't let it slip you by.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.fuglymaniacs.com

Image

By fuglymaniacs

Even though Dead Awaken plays war-themed death metal (old-school, no-funny-business death metal), the same things apply in this sense:

Dead Awaken are death metal zealots and clearly, early 90s death metal is what they love. Now, Dead Awaken wraps up classic death metal in their songs, but I don't find that they sound a bit like a tribute band to any one band in particular.

Basically, if you listen to a lot of death metal daily because you love the heavy riffing and growling, then Dead Awaken is just the sort of "meat and potatoes" ("soyrizo and potatoes," if you are vegetarian) style you will enjoy.

Don't waste your time with "they are not original" sarcastic/negative comments because this is for death metal love-it-alls. Bang your head, that's it. They have the songs and they have the attitude for it. That's not bad, not bad at all.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.metal-temple.com

Image

By Yassine "Spiritcrusher" Mankai

One thing is clear that is the Swedish Metal scene is one of the most active and most prestigious with bands of different styles. It is not by chance that acts like EUROPE, ENTOMBED or OPETH are in the first row and are a source of influence in the entire world. Among the new groups that are trying to build their status is SEPTEKH, a quartet of Thrash / Death Metal that comes straight from Stockholm and seems to have the right ingredients to be distinguished from others of the same style.

"Apollonian Eyes" is the second EP in the counter of SEPTEKH after the first called "The Seth Avalanche". This EP is a warm up for the next Full length album planned in the next month. "Apollonian Eyes" amazed me with the speed of the riffs and the well drumming filled with Blast Beats super controlled. But what most attracted my attention is the very rough mix of all the instruments, it looks like they want to pass a message with this kind of production, which certainly gives more personality. By focusing more on the studio side, I liked the saturated sound of the guitars, with the very vintage sound of the bass. I found the drums also very raw and original with a little post effects, like a 80s sound.

The four songs with a length of more than 15 minutes making up this EP, are usually with a very fast tempo, which is normal for the style of SEPTEKH which is in my opinion a crossover between MOTORHEAD, SLAYER and EMPEROR. The opening is with the song "Apollonian Eyes" with trends of Punk / Hardcore and the voice of Nils Meseke that simulates the calls of torture and suffering. Just after, "Burn It To The Ground" a song that was very catchy and stayed into my mind the first time I heard it, plus a super cool solo at the end of the song. The parts with fast tempo are always present and it is confirmed in "Cursing The Skies", a song full of energy. "Vlad Tepes" is a track with more heavy lines and grooves one other time, with more melody and research on the six strings, and it's a song also reflects more pain and sadness in the singing and the lyrics…

It should also be mentioned that there's a Rock N’ Roll attitude that combines oddly with Thrash / Death played in their music. It is in their look and even the kind of guitar used by David Wikström it is so personalized and very special. The next album will confirm all the tendencies around this band.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.metal-temple.com

Image

By Dorothy Cheng

Every once in a while there comes along a record that isn’t exactly a star in the field of innovation, but is so musically tight that it is impossible not to love. Swedish Death Metal usually has a penchant for being technically superior, and another one of its exports, DEAD AWAKEN, have proven this yet again with an album full of outstanding riffs and, kick ass complementary bass lines and stylistically appropriate and technically excellent drumming.

With their new album Where Hope Turns Dripping Red, DEAD AWAKEN are out to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with. In addition to all the praise on the instrumental side I have offered, the album also features some of the most effective vocal work I’ve ever heard. Vocalist Jorgen Kristensen is blessed with a natural full, deep tone, and he uses it to great effect by smearing it over the tight, crunching, destructive music – delivering the optimum Death Metal package. There are slower, more chugging songs such as "Rocket Symphony" that despite the slower speed, keep up with the other songs in terms of brutality and heaviness. It really goes to show the mark of the band’s talent and what a good fit they are with their genre. Some bands despite possessing talent don’t appear to have found their match in their chosen subgenres, but DEAD AWAKEN appears to have it spot on. They are definitely born for this.

The thing I loved most about the album though was how loud the bass was, even as it was matched up against relentless double bass drumming and heavy palm-muted riffing. Each song is also packed full with bombast and mercilessly bombards the listener with intense musical ballistics – but not without rhythm and groove. The band is so firmly rooted in rhythm that it has that perfect stalwart headbangable beat in every single line of the song. “Mudhell” even has a nice little solo stashed at the end, and everyone knows hearing solos in traditional Death Metal albums is like finding a marshmallow in your cereal. The sustain and control prowess of Kristensen was evident in the solo, marking him as both a talented instrumentalist as well as a vocalist.

Of course, the tracks are rather short, but this is unquestionably ideal, as longer tracks would surely have made the entire album repetitive and even boring. With some great breakdowns dotted here and there in selected tracks, the band really delivers a true Death Metal experience to listeners and reminds us all what old school is really being about: stick true to your roots and do it excellently.

I would definitely consider "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" to be one of the more superior Death Metal albums I have heard this year. DEAD AWAKEN is one of the rare bands that will not compromise quality for gimmicks, and it has definitely paid off for them.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.vs-webzine.com

Image

By Sheb

In such international group is one who is strong. Skåne County native, is the area in the extreme south of Sweden, the Swedish quartet has a single, Niclas Ankarbranth, the singer whose musical background VANDÖD boils down to a black metal band who released an album in 2007. The other three members of THE GARDNERZ we all come from other countries and have participated in all of the groups in their respective countries. Francisco Martin, bassist Sometimes we SUD America, probably in Chile or Uruguay, where he participates or has participated in three other combos. Vedran Bencic the drummer happens to Croatia where he was part of a shadowy group SAVAGE HARMONY heavy author of two demos in the mid-2000s and UZIEL a thrash death whose discography is limited to a demo. The line-up was finally completed by Wilhelm Lindh is Swedish but is also part of TOXODETH, cult group death-black Mexican scene. Do not ask me how those four met in a band together, I don ' not have a clue. Still, in 2008 the group was founded and an album was born in 2011, released by the American label Abyss Records. The band is back (which was rather late 2012 as date of this CD a few months) with a maximum of six titles for 35 minutes of music, what would be considered sufficient for any we flog as an album. The combo looks like a doom band but this description is really too simplistic to represent the music of four gardeners (those attending the garden, Athenian philosophical school created by Epicurus in IVth century BC). While there is no doubt that the music of THE GARDNERZ is mostly doom metal, melodic death must also be included in the table. With musicians from such backgrounds, do not of course expect a purely Swedish music all that Max has been mixed in Santiago, Chile. At the end we get a very original music but not especially successful, though heavy alternating rhythmic and melodic parts do well. The weak point of this cake probably lies in the song. If the parties purely death metal growls prove honest, it is quite different parts of the song especially clear where the singer tries to give the traditional doom to SOLITUDE Aeturnus. These are very ugly, sometimes sung and make no false emotion pass. To be honest it reminded me of their compatriots VOID MOON (especially on "A Horrible Disease") I recently told you about in these columns. The third track of this cake is a cover of "Transylvanian Hunger" of DARKTHRONE. If the title of this piece was not so well known and had not put a flea in his ear, I probably would not be recognized as it was here transfigured. In place of the original black metal, we are left with an acoustic ballad with female vocals. The result is surprising but very successful. An honest cake doom-death does not bring anything new, but that still leaves listen.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.themidlandsrocks.com

Image

By Paul Castles

Apollonian Eyes is a thumping four-track EP from Swedish thrashers Septekh. The opening title track is a ram-raid rampage taking the corners at such speed that you fear the whole thing’s going to topple over. This quartet has more to their bag than just fast and furious though as the following ‘Burn it to the Ground’ graphically shows us. From the opening bark of “Wake up and burn it down”, this is a vibrant riff heavy number with a great fists pumping the air chorus of ‘we burn it to the ground’. Septekh have a reputation for the unconventional so expect something a little different should they get to the UK for some live dates. Final track ‘Vlad Tepes’ is the pick of the four with a real menacing rumble throughout running in tandem with a gyrating guitar break that carries more sting than a sunbaked scorpion. Their debut full length album is one to look forward to. Prepare to get your skin turned Septekh.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.fuglymaniacs.com

Image

By fuglymaniacs

Zine’s new issue is almost done; time running out, so, to the point: it would seem, that Bane loves the album “Storm of the Light’s Bane” by Dissection. Is Bane a baby Dissection? ...Oh, and how! Bane’s metal of death succeeds at warp speed blasting, and huge riffs that lift sleepy heads out of stupor and into motion. The strong dose of spiraling riffs, that re-work and rewind, frame songs as intense, as they are memorable and melodic. The blazing speed does allow the listener to see what Bane does, even hearing the acoustic or clean guitar parts, the guitar layers. One listen, bam!, hooked, for Dissection fanatics.
