This may sound like a weird request given the genre but could recommend any doom metal that would be considered on the faster side of doom metal?

Ah cool man, I'll be seeing them live as well in a week. Especially exited about Kylesa, but Blood Ceremony should be awesome as well. I somewhat dig White hills as well when I'm in the mood for that kind of psych stuff. Have no idea who lazer/wulf are, though.

Check out Cathedral's mid-career works (The Ethereal Mirror to Caravan Beyond Redemption). Not all stuffs from these albums are up-tempo per se but there's a balanced combination of fast and slow songs.

I saw Kylesa with Gwar and Ghoul. It was easy to tell they weren't given nearly enough time as they wanted to get set up for their set, but goddamn if they didn't blow the roof off the place. I've only listened to this newest album once so far, it's hard to get an impression, but my immediate observation is it's not nearly as accessible as Spiral Shadow. Not a bad thing at all. We'll see..

Altar of Oblivion is like a faster, punchier Candlemass. Trad doom bands like Candlemass to tend to speed up and become NWOBHM-like sometimes.

Are there ''traditional'' sounding doom metal albums out there with extreme vocals? I'm NOT looking for doom/death, but rather Something that still has that Black Sabbath-ish vibe to it with harsh vocal approach. Think of something along the lines of Paradise Lost's Shades of God or Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium.

Really digging me some The Flight of Sleipneir. Like seriously, where has this been all my life?

Can anyone recommend any sludge/doom similar to Corrupted's Garten der Unbewusstheit? Stuff that would be both crushingly heavy at times, but also have tinges of post rock and ambient.

My friend just recently got me into doom/stoner/sludge metal. I'm mostly a thrash type of guy, but so far I've been loving it.

The albums I've listened to so far are Elder's Dead Roots Stirring and Electric Wizard's Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics. I've liked all of it thus far, but I feel as if it's almost too... soft. I want something with a thicker, psychedelic/atmospheric sound, that focuses heavily on riffs and is bass heavy. Dead Roots Stirring feels a bit like Alice in Chains, and I want to try to move away from that, but while still keeping the heaviness of the album. I'd like to keep the solos fast and bountiful though.

Another request is the same thing as above, but with a more mournful/bleak sound to it, and slower paced, emotion-filled solos.

To both of the request though, something with minimal vocals or something similar to Elder/Electric Wizard.

Still rocking out to the new Dream Death album and I'm thinking about picking up Penance's The Road Revisited. For those that have heard it, I'm curious if it's better or worse than The Road Less Travelled or hardly different from the other recording and just something for completists only.

What's the general consensus regarding Om? Are they worth it or are just run of the mill stoner doom? Is there any preferable place to pick up on their career?

Yeah man, a great mix of heavy riffs and slow mo headbanging with some folky touches and a soft side. Like a viking beserker going nuts, then slowly bleeding on the battlefield afterwards.

It really doesn't get much better than Om my friend. I rec ALL of their full length albums and the Current 93 split. Start with the first album then listen all the way through to the last so that you can appreciate the bands progression more.

Yessir, Om are killer. Conference of the Birds and Advaitic Songs are probably the best, although you can't really go wrong with any of their work except maybe the live albums.

Just got Paul Chain's Detaching From Satan EP and I'm fairly floored by it. A lot riffier than I expected. Some of it even comes across a bit epic. There were two "secret" bonus tracks unlisted. One is 30 minutes the other is 18 something, the shorter one is pretty bad ass and sounds like a Hawkwind jam. 18 minutes on 3 riffs and a bunch of guitar freak-out solos? Yes please!

All their stuff is pretty damn good, my favorite is perhaps Conference of the Birds, awesome stuff. Pilgrimage is also highly recommended from me, they're a good studying/reading band too.

Om's discography is on the "to do list".

So I just found Electric Wizard. Their Doom sound is something I haven't really connected with since Black Sabbath so many years ago.

I want to explore other Doom bands now. Those are about the only two I've ever really listened to. Where to begin?

You might as well start with some of the classic bands of the genre. Bands like Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Witchfinder General, Candlemass, Trouble and The Obsessed. The debut albums are good starting points. I'm sure people will feel the need to add more well-known and obscure bands to my list, so don't worry if the names I gave you aren't enough to satisfy your cravings.

Oh, and my favorite album of all time is a doom album. Reverend Bizarre's In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend. So try that puppy out as well.

If you like Sabbath and Electric Wizard, then Sleep should be your next port of call, especially the 2nd album "Sleep's Holy Mountain"

Can anyone suggest a good gothic/doom band similar to Type O Negative? I've already listened to Seventh Void, Kenny Hickey's other band, and Sal Abruscato's A Pale Horse Named Death.
Type O Negative sounded heavier while still retaining that gothic feel and it's something I really can't find in another band. Any ideas?

I just reviewed the debut by a band called Stillborn (the Swedish one) that reminded me of Type O Negative in a lot of places (especially the vocals). The later releases might be even closer.

I don't like the band, but Woods of Ypres's final album does take on a strong Type O Negative vibe. In fact it's probably the only album by the band I'll ever listen to by choice.

Now, another challenge: does anybody know of any bands that are similar to old Black Sabbath? I mean from their self-titled album or perhaps Masters of Reality - those are my favorite Sabbath albums. Anyways, I can't really describe the sound they produce, but I'm sure all of you are familiar with old Black Sabbath (I mean, they're the fathers of doom metal, they should be known, right?). I've already listened to Witch and they sound remarkably similar in terms of instruments. Any help on this one?

On the more heavy metal/doom side, there is Pentagram with their album Day of Reckoning. On the more stonerish side, is the Sleep album Sleep's Holy Mountain. Then there is a clone/rip off band called Orchid, but I don't really like them, so I'll let someone else point you in the direction of their best stuff. These Pentagram and Sleep albums are drenched in sabbath worship, yet retain their own identity.
