Hi

I want to buy a sound compressor and a preamp for my budget analog homestudio. I don't know which ones to buy, so I thought I might ask here.

I record mostly metal (black, death, thrash, doom, speed), but some rock, ambient and folk as well. The equipment in the studio:

*Tascam 414 MK-II 4-track recorder
*Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer
*Some old 1980s monitors
*Shure SM57 (for recording instruments)
*AKG D-3300 (for recording vocals)

Giving the equipment I use and what I record, which compressor and pre-amp do you recommend me?

Also, do you think I should get some other gear that might be necessary to record? I've been told that with all these specs, a compressor and a pre-amp it should be enough, but I prefer to ask just in case.

Thanks!
Feigr

It really all depends on the type of sound you want to have. What type of compressor are you looking into mostly? Optic, tube, FET?

I'd also recommend that you update your mics to something better than just an SM57 to record any instrument. Remember that your whole signal chain is only as good as the weakest link in it.
