ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://planetmosh.com

Image

By Mark Ashby

When this black metal crew issued their sophomore EP, ‘To Whatever End’, in 2009, it was hailed as one of the best examples of the genre to emerge from the island of Ireland at the time. It was praise which was well-deserved, as it was an excellent slab of Celtic-tinged BM, filled to overflowing with atmospherics, crushing riffs and tight musical performances, and the release quickly established Eternal Helcaraxe established them alongside the likes of the longer established Waylander as one of the prime forces in the movement.

Now, almost three years later, their first full length album has finally dropped, via the US-based Abyss Records – and it truly ups the ante in terms of establishing the ‘fair’ island of Erin as a place to be reckoned with in terms of the quality of darkened, extreme metal which it is currently unleashing on the rest of the unsuspecting world.

After the calm before the storm that is the atmospheric ‘Claim Your Place With The Gods’, ‘One Still Stands Here’ launches the assault proper: driven by the punishing drumming of Eyrith and the pummelling bass of Thule, it develops into a truly brutal, evil riff from Maulgrim and Praetorian, before the latter’s vocals kick in with ferocity of a wolf unleashed in a pit of menstruating virgins after having been starved for a month.

‘Invictus’ is as brilliantly dark slice of pure evil BM as you are going to hear this year, with Praetorian’s vocals guaranteed to send a shiver down the spine of even the coldest corpses. ‘We Assist Death’ hits like an army of Celtic warriors in full berserker mode, before easing off on the pedals (at least in relation to the melodic guitar line) in the second half, to allow the battering rams of Eyrith’s drumming to continue working on your few remaining defences. ‘Shadow Of The Wolf’ is another blitzkrieg of punishment, characterised once again by the full-on, unrelenting drumming and Praetorian’s dark, menacing growling and shrieking.

The majestic ‘As The Snow Gathers’ tells the story of a warrior waiting for his death, and sees Praetorian’s vocal at the height of its powers, as he combines just the right amounts of power and restraint to tell his tale, complete with a beautifully contrasting clean male voice in the middle section and the soaring orchestral section echoing the departure of the warrior’s soul to the next world. The theme is repeated on ‘Echoes Through Our Blood’, this time the story of a chieftain challenging his life of bloodshed, which is delivered with a fiercesome brutality to match that which the subject has meted out to his foes, while closer ‘Against All Odds’ sees the warrior return home to his beloved wife (with just the hint that it as his spirit self…) and is a fittingly epic end to proceeds, combining all of the elements of what has gone before into one huge masterpiece.

Despite the violence, and the themes of battle and bloodshed (it’s not a concept album as such, but certainly the songs are inextricably interlinked in their subject matter), there is a very introspective feel to the album, especially on the melodic, verging on morose, musical interludes which are interjected into many of the songs. It’s not a black metal album in terms of the subjects which it addresses, but in the way in which it addresses them and in its delivery… but, then that is a trend many BM bands have been following of late, using the medium to deliver a more meaningful message.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://heavymetaltribune.wordpress.com

Image

By Hong Rui

After facing numerous lineup changes over the course of their history, Swedish death metal band Corrosive Carcass finally releases their debut full length album, Composition of Flesh, 8 long years after their formation all the way back in 2004. The fear of yet another Entomed or Nihilist clone once again left me hesitant in listening to the album, yet fortunately there are surprises that Corrosive Carcass has put into Composition of Flesh that manage to make it stand out somewhat from the rest of their peers.
Being Swedish, by nature the gnarly guitar tone and the d-beat infused drumming styles are immediately noticeable right from the start of the album, and the influences from old school Swedish death metal bands like Entombed are immediately clear. Even the lead guitars that are present on the album also reek of these influences, such as the haunting solo on Butchershop, not particularly flamboyant but the heavy tone and the slow, melodic approach could easily fit on an Entombed track. But vocalist Jonathan takes a more savage approach in his vocal styles, often belting out the lyrics on the album in a tortured growl, going from high-pitched shrieks to low-pitched guttural growls, without any care for proper techniques whatsoever, and the main point being the aggression that is in the music.
While the music of Corrosive Carcass are fundamentally and undeniably old school Swedish death metal, the band has also included some influences from other death metal forefathers such as Death, such as on the opening moments of songs like Self Mutilation, with the somewhat thrashy feel of the riffing style, preventing the band from sounding like a complete clone of the old school Swedish death metal legends. There are even the doom-laden moments on tracks like Born in a Casket, that instantly sends an ominous feeling to the listener, and reeks heavily of death and gore, fitting to the themes that Corrosive Carcass has written on Composition of Flesh. Collector even includes an acoustic moment towards the end of the track to further up the already haunting atmosphere.
The band also takes a rather straightforward approach in their songwriting style, with most of the tracks on the album lasting less than 3 minutes, with Avatar barely meeting the 1 minute mark even, and this keeps the listener constantly on his feet, anticipating the next round of onslaught by the band. That said though, the band surprises the listener with the album closer The End of Us All, almost hitting 8 minutes, displaying that the band is more capable than just being able to write short songs.
Swedish death metal is far from being my favourite death metal subgenre, but Composition of Flesh has managed to keep me captivated throughout, with the violent and aggressive undertone that the band has taken, making it a rather enjoyable release from these Swedes.

NONEXIST (Sweden) Interview by http://www.metalcrypt.com

Image

By Luxi Lahtinen

NonExist is a project started by the dynamic Swedish duo of Johan Reinholdz (Andromeda, Skyfire, etc.) and Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage, ex-Arch Enemy, Furbowl, etc.) They play a melodic and progressive mixture of Thrash and Death Metal. The band's debut album, Deus Deceptor, was released by New Haven/Century Media in 2002, and it received a lot of praise from the press and Metal fans all over the world.

10 years passed with no news from the band and no one knew whether it still existed. Then news of a second NonExist album popped up out of nowhere. That album, From My Cold Dead Hands, once again with both Johans and programmed drums, has only been released digitally thus far but Abyss Records will be releasing it on CD and LP, both including special bonus tracks.

Vocalist Johan Liiva wanted to share a few thoughts of his about this latest opus, the future of NonExist and what's going on with his other bands; Devourment, Hearse and Furbowl

Luxi: So Johan, how did it feel to work with Johan Reinholdz again for the sequel to NonExist's debut album Deus Deceptor? It's been 10 years since that debut was released by Century Media/New Haven Records.

Johan: It felt great indeed! Now, some 10 years later, with all of what we've been thru and the experience we gained, well, it was about time. Back then we never really knew what this band was all about, but now we do. We enjoy doing this so much a third album is already underway. The time was right to get this thing rolling again!

Luxi: Was it easy for you to say yes when Johan R. suggested that you jump on this train again? Did you have any concerns about whether you would still have "it" after so many years or be able to follow-up Deus Deceptor?

Johan: Well, this is something we've been talking about on and off since the debut, really. In 2011, however, we reached the point where the pieces of the puzzle came together once and for all. Of course I had some doubts whether or not this would work after such a long time, but I'm totally satisfied with everything and I think the album is as fine a sequel as it could be!

Luxi: Did everything work out for you, with regards to the recording process, the way you planned?

Johan: After Reinholdz recorded the demos with vocal lines, they were sent to me to practice. I wrote the lyrics of just one song this time. Then we decided on a date to start recording my vocals, which we divided into four different occasions over the summer of 2012. It was damn hard work, but everything turned out just according to plan.

Luxi: You chose to record From My Cold Dead Hands at Multipass Studios whereas the previous album was recorded and produced at Peter Tängren's Abyss Studios. Why didn't you want to do everything at Abyss Studios again? It seemed to work well on Deus Deceptor?

Johan: First, it was a matter of budget and second, it suited us much better to record it by ourselves. We felt freer to do so whenever we wanted.

Luxi: You once said that the new NonExist album would be slower, heavier and more melodic than its predecessor, and it would contain more keyboards, too. Did you stick to this plan or did some spontaneous things take place while you were recording this opus that led to a more diverse sounding record than you could have ever even imagined?

Johan: For me it turned out nothing like I expected, hehe! It's amazing how things tend to develop during recording sessions.

Luxi: It might be too early to ask but I was wondering if there are already any songs on this new record that are favorites?

Johan: For sure, I have my own personal faves; "Flesh Falls from the Bone," "Dark and Tortured Universe" and "From My Cold Dead Hands" are the ones I love the most, for one reason or another.

Luxi: Matte Modin (of Defleshed, Dark Funeral, etc. fame) did the drums for NonExist's debut album. Who was sitting behind the battery during the recording of From My Cold Dead Hands?

Johan: Well, this time we chose to go for programmed drums, mostly due to (once again) budget reasons. It was also because they were already done and ready. I think it turned out freakin' awesome. I was a little' worried at first, but the end result had me convinced it was the right decision, especially since Reinholdz put such an enormous amount of effort into the rolls, fills and other tricks and now I wouldn't want it any other way!

Luxi: How did you split up the actual songwriting process for this album? Or is this basically Johan R's creation from the beginning to the end, or, at least, most of it?

Johan: Yes, all the songs as well as most of the lyrics, except for "Presence Everlasting," which I wrote, were created by Reinholdz. Next time it'll be a little more balanced and I'll contribute with lot more lyrics.

Luxi: I mean this as a compliment but, your vocals on NonExist's debut reminded me of Jeff Walker's (Carcass). The more raspy parts were different from your vocal style with Furbowl or Hearse? Was it easy to change your vocals to the style you used on Deus Deceptor and did you also try to obtain the same style for From My Cold Dead Hands?

Johan: On the debut I tried to find a new style, one with a higher pitch. This time, however, I'm back with my more "normal" voice but still experimenting a lot, flirting with the sickness a throat can actually come up with when under pressure, hahaha!!

Luxi: People age (which I guess is normal, he-he!), but has this caused any problems for your vocal delivery, maybe forcing you to forgo some registers that you cannot do any longer? Aging really sucks, doesn't it Johan?

Johan: Yeah, aging has two sides to it, I guess, but as for my vocal delivery, the only thing I felt this time was that I was terribly rusty and unused to recording. I haven't done much growling since the last Hearse album in 2009. I could feel a difference but I just can't put my finger on it. Still, it's natural that the body and physical abilities change, for better or worse, as the years go by. :)

Luxi: What about these cover songs that you planned to record? Which of them will you use for the regular European version, and which ones will be saved for later use, like a Japanese edition of From My Cold Dead Hands?

Johan: The covers (Coroner's "Masked Jackal," Megadeth's "In My Darkest Hour," Atomic Rooster's "Death Walks Behind You," Eucharist's "Greeting Immortality" and Merciless' "Realm of the Dark") were, first and foremost, meant for promotion only, however, some of them will also be featured on the physical releases. Which ones, exactly, we will let that be a surprise, hehe... ;)

Luxi: Are there plans for a limited vinyl release of From My Cold Dead Hands, or maybe a special die-hard fan pack, including a NonExist T-shirt, exclusive poster, a set of NonExist pins, logo patch, logo sticker and some demo mixes from the recording sessions? Now that would be pretty killer, wouldn't it?

Johan: Hell yeah, that'd be totally awesome but, for sure, there will be a limited edition on vinyl, sooo... watch out!!

Luxi: Do you have plans to play any shows right after the album has hit the stores?

Johan: So far we've only played that fest in Gothenbürg at the end of last year, but we're looking for shows, small or big, long or short, all the time. We have no plans other than we have contacted dozens of festivals, but nothing's been decided. Let's wait and see what happens, we'll keep our eyes open and keep looking for some good shows out there.

Luxi: NonExist has always been, more or less, a project type of band. Any plans to make it a real band that operates full-time? Or do each of you have other bands that simply cannot be sacrificed or abandoned in the name of NonExist?

Johan: Well, it's a long "story" really. When we first started, back in 2001, we were truly going for it, to kick ass and tour and all that. But things happened (for example our record label shut down) and I got a job (to re-build my economy, etc.) plus Hearse kept me busy, so it all went down the drain. Now, however, the time was right to start NonExist again. We've got three members for live purposes and are ready to roll at almost any time. Still, music as a full-time job? Nah, not for me, anyway. It's too late for that.

Luxi: What about Hearse? The band's 6th album has been in the works for quite a long time. What's the latest update?

Johan: Most likely, there will be no further activities with Hearse. We made 5 great albums as I see it, but who knows, maybe we will do something again some day.

Luxi: Will there new life breathed into some of your previous bands like Devourment and Furbowl?

Johan: Devourment no, but we're actually considering recording and releasing a 7" with Furbowl. Keep your eyes and ears open for that one, most likely we will do this, it's just a question of when...

Luxi: Back to NonExist for one last question; what can we expect after From My Cold Dead Hands?

Johan: We're already writing new songs for the third album. Four songs are as good as complete and another two are half done. I am writing lyrics as often as possible with some writer's cramp in the works every now and then, but I'm hopeful. Let's do this soooon, hehe...!!

Luxi: Thank you for your time Johan and thanks for blessing us with another NonExist record after all these past years. If you have any last words to conclude this interview, then by all means...

Johan: Thanks for the support Luxi! It's always nice hearing from you! Hails and check out the new NonExist album out there peeps!! Ugghh!! \m/

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.zwaremetalen.com

Image

By Martijn Korremans

A charming debut of Sweden Dead Awaken . Old school brutal death metal in high gear, filled with guitar licks and picks, breaks and blowing drums. Opening track Carnivore immediately puts the bar for the rest of the album.

The duo Dead Awaken forms since 2002 for live performances a session bass player, but does the job for the album mainly two. The result speaks for itself, this CD after I listened. On a single track with lots of fun No über heavy guitar riffs in minor, but definitely catchy and groovy. First track is straight lingers Deutsches Corpse Africa , with a swing where you should nod with your head. Rest comes in the form of Rocket Symphony , a quieter track is largely dependent semi trailing midtempo riffs and drumming. Unfortunately what boring and interchangeable. Fortunately, the rams blown thereafter. A stable base of rapidly played power chords that the bait quite hold.

The nine tracks that make up this album are mostly songs of unreleased demos, but quite patched up. The band began eleven years ago as Abyssal Chaos took the name Dead Awaken from work Cannibal Corpse . As far as my information goes, the men already working on a sequel, which I am concerned, that again our direction.

Rating: 75/100

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.wintertorment.com

Image

By Patrick

Sweden's Dead Awaken know how to write and release a impressive debut.Nine tracks of guitar heavy, death metal with some old school death metal influences entertwined within the bands wall of sound.Intense, fast drumming pummeling beats with some blast beats and mid-paced beats mixed inbetween. The guitars are extremly heavy and precise with alot of catchy and memorable riffs.Vocals are vicious death metal growls.Recomended to all who enjoy pure old school swedish death metal.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.wintertorment.com

Image

By Patrick

This is Septekh's follow up E.P TO 2012 The Seth Avalanche {also released through Abyss Rec.}Apollian Eyes is four tracks aggressive,vicious thrashing death metal.Septekh mix it all together heavy guitars that mix both heavier death metal mid-paced speed and the more raw,insane raw thrashing style of the early eighties.Vocals are black metal type screams/vocals with some deeper gruff vocals used in some of the lines.If you enjoy violent thrashing,death/black metal Septekh have released the perfect Mcd for you! {on a side-note i read the band is currently working on finishing up their debut full-length cd,to be released on Abyss later this yr. so keep on eye out if your a "fan" of the band}

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://pestwebzine.com

Image

By Adrian

This is a re-release the band's debut album previously released by an obscure label, Final Chapter Records, back in 2004. Doom Metal is the name of the game here and more precisely traditional Doom Metal a la Black Sabbath. What I like about it is the fact that they keep the rhythms quite diversified (well, as much as this genre allows) so this is definitely not a monotonous release, but I would recommend it to die-hard Doomsters only, I don't think it has the force/ability to attrack other listeners. The sound is pretty good and rough also, the compositions are ok but without any spectacular elements, the vocals are Ozzy-like but less catchy and versatile, in the end only the guitar solos stand out from the rest, I would have loved them to be everywhere on this album, from start to finish.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Sicktus

Septekh is back with another One Of Those block rockin 'beats! Woohoo! - In 2012 was 'The Seth Avalanche': http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/nl/reviews/view/id/21909 ( buy that album!: http://www.officialabyssrecords.com/adv ... kh&x=0&y=0) my first encounter with the Swedish Septekh. On an earlier demo after - download at their website - it was also the first release of this close-knit quartet. "Apollonian Eyes' is the second release, again via Abyss Records and what is immediately striking is that the band slightly less catchy, which aggressive and especially more thrashy sound. However, the key words raw, primitive, pure and passionate are still applicable and 'less catchy does not mean that men do not produce still pretty catchy songs, vreescht not, it's all a bit more aggressive and less groovy, but still plenty of catchy. Besides the already mentioned last time influences Motörhead, Gehennah and Witchery, I hear a hefty dose of The Crown on 'Apollonian Eyes' and NWOBHM influences - like the thrash - increased. This is reflected in the song structures, building and solos that a huge NWOBHM feel and drive it. Despite the raw energy and 'catchy chaos', sounds Septekh same time very precisely balanced by the strong song structures, occasionally almost symmetrical. And looks can be deceiving, because a seemingly simpler, Rechtoe-forward song like 'Vlad Tepes' example contains much more epic layers and details you play pick up after one ring. Whether belt out the lyrics during the first playback turn is a tad less, that also because the previously all intelligent lyrics and vocals on "Apollonian Eyes' still be a lot more sophisticated. This is done as said something at the expense of instant recognition and of catchy, but adds in the long run only to quality and durability. Fifteen minutes 'Apollonian Eyes' with booklet in lap makes me incidentally an hour Wikipedia by click-roam, always nice to be to look for (re-) knowledge and information, stimulated by a band right? So I remain excited about Septekh? Certainly. The men rock as the best, the vocals of Nils Meseke are more varied and more convincing than 98% of his colleagues in the death thrash and energy, quality and enthusiasm of the strings & sheets brigade splash out of the speakers. However, what about 'The Seth Avalanche' said that the six songs and 22 minutes of music were far too little here, a recurring point of criticism ... Four songs with a playing time of a quarter is of course he-le-fold too little to make! Satisfy the enthusiast If Septekh promises Agathocles of dirty thrashy death metal to become and continue to deliver what you say you against a continuous stream of releases you will not hear me complain, but otherwise it's really high time to you in your cabin on Swedish to close and not come out for a full album on tape is, men! Spotify hipsters can here: http://open.spotify.com/album/6T9iEihReYvGkDQ5vuqSoC listen to the full EP, old school collectors a hardcopy want in your home can here: http://www.officialabyssrecords.com/adv ... kh&x=0&y=0 lap up the various foods that Septekh and Abyss Records have prepared for you. If you are indeed a clock radio with CD player, then it is 'Apollonian Eyes' also excellent to use as a means to make your girlfriend., Cat and neighbors in one fell swoop it up

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

To be honest, and though I liked what I heard on their previous record, I wasn’t too hooked on SEPTEKH the first time I heard them. They were alright and not too hard on the ear but I can’t say that they really stood out that much. Hopefully they’ll leave a more lasting impression on me this time around. I’m not a huge fan of EPs and the likes. Too few tracks to really make me think it is worth the money and even though you can put the player on repeat is still doesn’t do it for me. Especially when it is something that is really good. Then I want to hear a full album of songs. Sweden’s SEPTEKH makes me think of old school Swedish bands like A Canorous Quintet or Ablaze My Sorrows in that there is a lot going on in their death metal that might be hard to take in if you have ADHD and can’t sit still for more than a few seconds. You can call this old school if you like. I call it good death metal.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://metalcurse.com

Image

By Ychoril

When I heard that Allen West (ex-Obituary) was in this band, it came as no surprise that Southwicked has an old-school Florida Death Metal sound. In fact, most of the riffs here could easily have fit in with an early Obituary album (circa Slowly We Rot or Cause of Death). The only thing missing was John Tardy’s “I’m vomiting up my lungs” vocal delivery. Stylistically, this is very straight-forward mid-paced Death Metal that worships at the altar of Celtic Frost/Hell Hammer. The downside of that style is that while each song is solid on its own, the album as a whole tends to sound a bit monotonous. Every track sits in the same speed range, never breaking out of the narrow groove that they’ve carved out for themselves. The pacing never really changes, so even though the riffing does, it still feels like you’re listening to what could be one really long song. If I’m not mistaken, this was an issue that plagued Obituary as well. What made Cause of Death a classic was a combination of John Tardy’s dynamic vocals and James Murphy’s insane soloing. Those broke up the general monotony of Obituary’s basic song structures. In the case of Southwicked, they don’t have the dynamic vocals (opting instead for a basic Death growl, provided by Sven Poets) and they don’t have the kind of explosive soloing that they need to break things up. If they can manage to inject some more diversity in their song structures, the follow-up to Death’s Crown is going to be fucking awesome.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.metalcorefanzine.com

Image

By Chris Forbes

4 tunes of some warped out thrash metal mixed in with some death metal and a fucked up singer who sings and screams at times like a wild man. The songs are def not your typical thrash metal band and are just out of control at times and that is a good thing. This is no retro thrash shit at all. This was easily like a breath of fresh air from all the generic shit that belongs in a garbage can.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://wickedchannel.com

Image

By Mike

I have said it before, but it is worth mentioning again. A good dose of thrash is needed every once in a while. Entrench’s latest release, Inevitable Decay, is hitting shelves soon and you heard it from this guy first – get this damned album. If you are looking for a lethal dose of thrash metal goodness, you will find it with Inevitable Decay. It is song after song of thrashing riff after thrashing riff.

This album hit me from out of left field. I just popped it in and found myself jamming to song after song and then found myself replaying the album over and over again. I was doing the same thing for days too. It was not just a fluke. The technical side of this album really resonates well with me. Each song seems to increase speed and intensity, but with complete control.

Abyss Records is proud to announce the upcoming release of Inevitable Decay from old school Swedish thrashers ENTRENCH. The album is targeted for a late 2011 release with vinyl treatment coming from Sweden’s Blood Harvest Records. Right up the alley of Kreator and Slayer fans, ENTRENCH brings back real aggression and brutality to today’s thrash metal scene. Beware: This band will leave you with a bad case of whiplash.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.rockmusicstar.com

Image

By John Jeffrey

When Rob Barrett, the guitarist from Buffalo's own "Death Metal" giant, Cannibal Corpse, announced he was getting married (to wife Irina), it was announced a special show (a wedding reception of sorts) was being put together at Club Infinity, which would feature the reunion of several retired bands from Riverside, NY. Several musicians who no longer reside in the WNY area traveled home for the event, including bassist, Rock Rollain. While Rollain returned to Buffalo to reunite with the now defunct, Axmen, he informed RockMusicStar that he far from retired, and is currently playing with the Death Metal band, Southwicked. While RockMusicStar doesn't typically cover that genre of metal, how could we ignore a band whose bass player's name is "Rock?"

Southwicked is the brainchild of guitarist Allen West, who is known for his time playing with Obituary and Six Feet Under (which features original Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes). They have just releasedtheir debut album, "Death's Crown," on Abyss Records, produced by Peter Claes and Mark Prator. Southwicked harkens back to the early days of Death Metal, when it was more about attitude, versus today's technically obsessed, virtuoso type bands. While the signature 'cookie monster' vocals (provided by Sven Poets) are ever present on "Death's Crown," which is usually a major deterrent for me, the music is really worth listening to. Songs like the title track, "Death's Crown" and "Craving for Blood" are reminiscent of early thrash, making me think of bands like Overkill, Death Angel and Anthrax.

One of the things I really like about Southwicked, is unlike most Death Metal bands, they don't tune their guitars down to "X-flat," as they maintain a heavy tone by playing in the key of "D" and the guitars don't sound like mud. Rock Rollain's Geezer Butler style bass lines add a certain doom element to the songs and drummer Marco Vreven avoids the trappings of stereotypical Death Metal drumming by avoiding the lightning speed double bass playing and grinding that you'll hear by most drummers in this genre, and goes for a more heavy tom-tom approach, almost like a Dave Lombardo (Slayer).

By far, the best song on the CD is "Green River Killing Fields," an epic tune that will get your blood pumping for anyone who enjoys heavy music. While Southwicked haven't reinvented the wheel, it's refreshing to hear a new(er) Death Metal band who isn't afraid to bring it "old school" style.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) "Chalice of Black Flames" CD EP review by http://www.imhotep.no

Image

By Peter Loftus

When Chaossworn rose from the ashes of symphonic black metal act Cryptic Death somewhere towards the end of 2009, the change of name was accompanied by a change in style. The new direction borrowed more heavily from Sweden’s melodic death metal scene and relied less on the black metal elements employed prior to 2009. “Chalice of Black Flames” was put out as a demo early in 2010 and brought the band to the attention of the people at Abyss records who quickly signed the band and released the demo as a 15 minute EP of the same name.

The first track, “Crowned and Winged” is a slightly underwhelming introduction, sounding a bit too much like mid-paced Amon Amarth for my liking. Fortunately Chaossworn redeem themselves with some tasty soloing and the bridge reveals some excellent musicianship, with complex rhythms and accomplished fretwork. Mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö, the sound is clean and professional. The guitars are chunky, the solos full of character and colour and balance is just right. In “Bringer of Storms”, the guys remind us of their black metal past with punishing blastbeats and a simple and repetitive main riff. The bridge is once again where Chaossworn come into their own; measured and atmospheric, the guitars writhe and coil like snakes above a fiery pit of spoken vocals. Title track “Chalice of Black Flames” brings the EP to a close. The quirky intro and chorus riff brings to mind Dark Tranquility at their best. Once again, the bridge is incredible and the guitar lines are a work of beauty, making this the standout track of the release.

I found the opening track predisposed me to dislike Chaossworn. After all – do we really need another Swedish Amon Amarth/Dark Tranquility hybrid? This changed once I got into the second and third tracks and they started to work their magic on me. It is obvious that Chaossworn can all handle their instruments, and their mature sound clearly demonstrates how much work they have put into perfecting their craft. The songs are well structured and the instrumental parts can be exceptional at times.

Ultimately, with a bit more originality and a stronger first track, this would have been a very impressive debut. While it is a bit too derivative to gain a really high score, it still makes for good listening and if Chaossworn play to their strengths they could easily become one of the star attractions in the melodic DM scene.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://www.imhotep.no

Image

By Matt Coe

Raw, pissed off and circling the Slayer and Kreator wagons, Sweden’s Entrench assault from the hip on “Inevitable Decay”. When they slow down for the melodic mid-section instrumental break for “As Dawn Breaks” you get the feeling these gentlemen have studied their “Hell Awaits” and “Reign In Blood” records well. Vocals are Mille-inspired for sure, shrieking with despair on thrash-a-holic tracks like “Debt Of Sorrow” and the shape-shifting “Blind Illusion”.

5 demos in their underground development should mean an act primed and ready to attack with great personal chemistry and songwriting know how. “Inevitable Decay” will appeal to more of the old school European thrash crowd, those who miss the early days of Cyclone and Kreator where speed and impact mattered more than refined, streamlined arrangements. Decent but nothing extraordinary. “Inevitable Decay” has a ton of one-two off to the races moments that could be improved.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by Two Guys Metal Reviews

Image

By Matt Baggins

The Gates of Slumber are a wonderful doom metal band with an incredibly powerful sound oftentimes reminiscent of Saint Vitus or even Black Sabbath. The raw power of these riffs is almost orgasmic, they have a vibrant energy to them, their slow nature crowning them in evil. This is a band who understand how to make doom metal, and considering they've been around since 1998 they've certainly had the time to practice. Today I'm reviewing their classic debut record ... The Awakening a record that showed the world for the first time the crushing lack of speed that would define The Gates Of Slumber's music.

This record absolutely reeks of doomy Black Sabbath. Obviously, this is a good thing. Especially when you consider that the band has been able to add more than a few of their own touches to the music. The end result is an album filled with dramatic build ups and epic explosions of sound, all deliver at around 60 beats per minute. What's truly amazing about ...The Awakening is that these tracks are heavy enough to make the listener squirm as they try to escape the slow and certain onslaught of the bands bass filled trudge. It swallows up the listener and forces them into a world of doom metal that provides no way out.

So, if you're looking for wonderfully destructive Saint Vitus flavored doom metal then The Gates of Slumber is the band for you. Their music is slow and unforgiving, it will pummel your eardrums into submission and force you to acknowledge the dominance of The Gates of Slumber. Filled with unholy howls and fantastic guitar parts ...The Awakening is not to be missed. Add a huge bottom end to the mix and you've got yourself a doom metal record for the ages. Suffice to say, ...The Awakening is a doom classic and I'm very much looking forward to seeing The Gates of Slumber this summer on their European tour!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) Interview by http://www.extreminal.com

Image

By Battlepig

Please introduce yourselves and the band:

Hi! I'm Jörgen Kristensen, the guitarist/vocalist of Swedish death metal band Dead awaken. The band consists of me and drummer Mats Blückert. For live situations, we're alternating between a couple of session bass players. In the studio, I play everything but the drums. I write all the lyrics and we write the music together.

Why did you chose the band name DEAD AWAKEN? Does the name has a special meaning for you?

Our former drummer, Joakim Edlund came up with the name, after listening to Cannibal corpse. The words dead awaken were part of the lyrics for a song. He thought the name was really cool, so we stuck with it. The name itself doesn't really have a special meaning to me personally. Except for the fact that we've had the name for many years and I tend to identify with it.

How would you describe you music?

Originally, it was Thrash, with a hint of Death Metal. Now it's Death metal with the occasional Thrash part. It's often described as old school, I tend to think of it as more timeless. It's aggressive, with a touch of melodies here and there. A catchy chorus is necessary to us and I try to put some thought into the lyrics.

In April 2013 you will release your first full-length cd which is called “Where Hope Turns Dripping Red“ via Abyss Records. Could you already tell us something about its music and lyrics?

Alright, it's an aggressive affair. For the one's whos been into Death metal for a while, there may be some obvious influences in there. It's Death Metal, the way we want Death Metal to be. It's fast, it's heavy, it's occasionaly ugly, as we don't want things to get too polished. Most of the lyrics deal with war.

Do you also cooperate with other bands / musicians?

Do you mean like side projects, etc? No. Unless it's a project for a limited period of time. To me personally, it's one band only. As I personally love the music we write, I have no need to go anywhere else.

Where do you see the band in five years?

Hopefully we've released a couple more albums and done a couple of tours. As we've been doing this since the late 80's, it's not likely that we give things up.

Are any gigs or tours planned for this year?

At the moment, no. Booking shows before your album is released, is a pain in the ass. Hopefully things will start ticking now, with a strong album out. Yes, I know it's not typically Swedish to say you're good. But we're extremely happy with it and we'll keep pushig our limits.

Any last words to your fans:

Keep supporting Death Metal, we need to keep it extreme! Please check out the album, hope you'll like it. Thank you!

Many thanks for the interview and all the best for DEAD AWAKEN in the future!!!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "The System of Nature" DIGI CD review by http://transcendingobscurity.com

Image

By Kunal Choksi

The Gardnerz (it’s such a pain to spell it right) is a Doom/Death Metal band from Sweden. These guys play something like a heavier, Death Metal version of Stoner Doom. For reference, think of European bands such as Runemagick, mid-period Amorphis and a bit of Stoner era Celestial Season. It sounds very good on paper, and it is on disc as well.

If you are familiar with the above bands, you’d know what to expect – groovy, plodding Death/Doom with more emphasis on riffs over atmosphere. Thanks to the Runemagick influences, there are the Middle-Eastern-sounding riffs and solos that are instantly appealing. The hooks are powerful and are bound to stay in your mind well after the album is over. Between the trippy riffing are the melodic parts and acoustic sections, bolstered by the faster and heavier Death Metal trudges. It’s all very coherently and tastefully done. The songs unravel naturally, nothing is forced despite them traversing a wide area of influences. It’s like every song has a tale to tell.

‘The System of Nature’ is a very absorbing album, rich with influences that aren’t limited to just a genre. It’s one of the better releases to have come out and deserves a place in your collection.

93 minutes + 242 Minutes of Extras

Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of Black Metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-ninties when a rash of suicides, murders, and chrch burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musician, artist, and the music fans worldwide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanist running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.
To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood movement.
The result is a poignant, moving story that's as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what's actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson acress the northern sky.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) Interview by http://pestwebzine.com

Image

By Sónia Fonseca

Daemonicus is a Swedish death metal band spawned in 2006 and they are a perfect blend of all three big names of the Swedish Death Metal scene (Unleashed, Entombed, Dismember). Their most recent album "Deadwork” via Abyss Records has brought Daemonicus some well-deserved attention and Pest Webzine decided it was time to have a conversation with them.

Daemonicus is a Swedish band with a Latin name. How did you come up with that?

Back in 2006 when we started, we couldn’t decide what name to use. We tried out a couple of different ones but nothing really felt right. I remember that we all wanted a simple, and preferably a one worded name.
Anyway, one night when i was watching an episode of The X-Files. I can’t remember what it was about but someone had written the word Daemonicus on a table. I think the whole episode was entitled Daemonicus as well.
The next day I told the guys that the name of our band had to be Daemonicus and they all agreed!

Daemonicus is mainly labeled as old school swedish death metal. Is this the most adequate description for your sound?

Yeah, that might be a fitting description for us, and it is of course flattering to be compared to the legends in that genre. We play death metal, we’re swedes and we’re not re-inventing the wheel so to speak. So yeah I guess you are spot on with that description.
But if you would ask me what kind of music we play, the answer is easy: we play death metal. Nothing more, nothing less.

The band got formed in 2006 and, three years later, ViciSolum Productions released your debut album "Host of Rotting flesh”. In the mean time you released three demos... how were they received by the general public?

Actually the first two demos "Demo From Hell” and "Demon Inside” is the same recording. We just remixed it since it sounded like crap, and we gave it a new name.
We never sent "Demo From Hell” to any labels or reviews or anything. We just gave it away to friends and such. When we remixed it and gave it a new name and a new cover, we sent it to a couple of magazines and fanzines for reviews.
We got really good reviews and "Demon Inside” even got the honour of being demo of the year in some magazine which I can’t remember.
When we released the third demo "Swarm of Death” we sent it away for a review in Sweden Rock Magazine, and it was through that review that ViciSolum Productions found us. So it must have been quite the review they gave us.

Some reviewers of your debut were unanimous in saying that Daemonicus were young as a band and still too inexperienced for a debut album. How does this kind of criticism make you feel?

That album didn’t really turn out as we wanted it to, so I guess they are right by saying so. The songs on that album are mostly the songs we had on the demos. We still play a couple of them when we play live, but some of them you will most certainly never hear us play again.
But who knows? It’s in the contract that we couldn’t record those songs again for 20 years. Maybe we’ll record and release a "Host of Re-Rotten Flesh” in 2029. You never know!

Your second album "Deadwork” was released by Abyss Records. Why have you changed labels?
What’s the main difference between ViciSolum Productions and Abyss Records?

We parted ways with ViciSolum on mutual terms. So there is no bad blood there.
ViciSolum had other priorities and so did we.
Abyss Records was very interested in releasing our second album, since Daniel (Abyss Records) is crazy about Swedish metal.
I think it’s hard to compare the labels, but I can say that our collaboration with Abyss is working out just fine, and I think it has opened up a few eyes and ears for us and got us some really hardcore fans as well!

Your second album received great reviews. How does that make you feel knowing that your music is so appreciated?

Yes they all seem to like it and we still keep getting excellent reviews on it. That makes us feel like we did something really good, and of course it inspires us to keep making more music. It’s gonna be hard to top this one maybe, but we are more than up to the task!

Who mixed and mastered "Deadwork”?

Ronnie Björnström at Enhanced Audio Productions did the mix and master for us after we did the initial recordings in our own studio.
He is also the one who mixed and mastered the "Swarm of Death” demo that got us signed, so it felt good to be working with him again. He did an outstanding job on "Deadwork” if you ask me.

Who designed the cover of "Deadwork”? It is pretty self explanatory... do you appreciate those in-your-face covers?

The cover artwork was made by a guy who calls himself DanielDevilish. I think it is awesome and very fitting for that album.
I think a good cover artwork is very important for any album. And I still appreciate looking at the artworks when I listen to the music, like I did as a kid.
"Pestilence – Consuming Impulse” being the exception hehe. Awesome album nonetheless.

You have an official video for "Nothing but death” which was produced/directed by Stefan Hagström and C.C.H.B. Productions. How does it work? How big/small is the budget for the promo videos? Are your ideas taken in consideration?

Yeah that is correct. We are very pleased with how the video turned out. It passed our wildest imaginations! Stefan had some great ideas right from the start so we just went with them, and then Stefan edited the whole thing by himself.
Actually C.C.H.B. Productions is our own production company. We run it for us, by us. So the budget was almost zero.
We are talking about recording another video pretty soon as well. Another song from "Deadwork” but we are still deciding on wich one.

Death seems to be your favourite topic to explore in your lyrics. Why death? Have you ever had a near death experience? Do you fear death at all? If you could choose, how would you wish to die?

Maybe it’s because we all think about death from time to time, and we all have to deal with death in one way or another on a daily basis, and I don’t just mean us in the band but everyone can relate to it. One reason is also that I enjoy watching horror movies and I gather lots of inspiration to my lyrics from them. Another thing is of course that you can’t really play death metal and have lyrical themes about doing laundry or picking up your kids from school. The music craves a dark lyrical theme which death can provide. And it’s not about having the most outrageous lyrics or try to scare people either. We got Cannibal Corpse for that =)
I don’t fear death, but I have too much to live for so I don’t have time for dying. It’s more that I fear not being able to live and see my kids grow up and to be a part of their life.
If I could choose which way to go? Well, spontaneous combustion sounds pretty cool so I guess I’d choose that.

You are against all religious insanity, which basically means you’re against most of the human beings. How old were you when you started loathing religion? Why?

I was never pushed into any religion by my parents when I grew up. They let me think for myself and I was very young when I realized that religion wasn’t anything I wanted to be a part of. The loathing for religion and religious fanatics of all sorts, came later on in life when I started to look around and see what was going on in the world. It’s a downward spiral where brother kills brother for believing in the "wrong God” and we have a front row view of our own extermination. Religion is forcing us back to the fucking middle-ages, technology wise and in our perspective. If that’s not enough to make you sick to your stomach. I don’t know what will.

You have been compared to Bolt Thrower and Master. Have they influenced your sound somehow?

It is very flattering to be compared to bands such as Bolt Thrower since we all dig them a lot. I’m pretty sure you can hear some Bolt Thrower in our music here and there.
Unfortunately I haven’t really heard Master all that much. It’s still nice to be compared to them since they are a good band, but I don’t know if they have influenced our sound in anyway.

When you get compared to big bands, do you usually take it as a compliment or otherwise?

Always as a compliment! Especially since we often get compared to bands that we love. If we would get compared to bands like Takida or Dead by April or some shit like that, I would probably ask what’s the status of your mental condition. But being compared to bands like Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Dismember and so on.. How could that not be a compliment?

So far, what has been Daemonicus highlight as a band?

I think we would all agree that opening up for Asphyx in Bucharest last year in front of 600-700 people was the highlight of our career so far. We did a great show and we all had an awesome time both on and off stage that night.

Are you planning to do a tour this year? I know you’ve stated your wish to do so but I haven’t seen any tour dates online.

Yes we are planning one big tour in October together with Demonical on the "Darkness Unbound Tour”. It will take us to some countries we still haven’t played in like Denmark, the Netherlands etc. It will be a great tour, and a great chance for us to promote our latest album. We are also planning a smaller tour in Sweden in September, but everything hasn’t been confirmed yet so I can’t go in on details just yet.

You started out as a hard rock fan! Why did you then "evolve” to heavier sounds?

Yeah we all grew up listening to heavy music. I don’t know why we kept searching for heavier and heavier music! Maybe it’s about the energy in the faster and heavier music that is appealing. Of course we still listen to other music than Death metal, but sometimes Kiss just isn’t brutal enough, you know?

Have you ever considered doing a cover of a hard rock theme/band? Which would you appreciate covering and why?

Of course! We love playing cover songs and paying tribute to bands we grew up with.
We often goof around playing old Metallica tunes when we rehearse.
One song I’ve had in mind for a long time is tune from Helloween called The Time of the Oath. It’s heavy and slow and could be made in to an awesome death metal song.
We have gotten a few requests on appearing on some tribute albums, but nothing that would fit us so we are still waiting for the perfect one. The most fun would be to do a cover of something that is so far from death metal that no one would expect it.
We’ll see..

What’s your main goal as a band? And as a man?

Main goal as a band is of course to always have the next record top the previous one, and to reach out to a bigger crowd and to tour and play all over the world.
The main goal as a man? That’s a tricky question. I guess I would say. To do right by my kids and my family. And to live a life with as few regrets and as few untried things as possible.

Scandinavian bands seem to be way too cool these days and manage to reach the top of the charts in many countries. Is this good or bad for metal?

I think it’s a good thing that metal gets the attention it deserves. Instead of just being "noise” it’s actually being considered as real music nowadays. However, we are loosing the underground feeling of it, where it used to be "our thing”. Theese days everyone can buy an Iron Maiden t-shirt at your local store.
But I guess it just goes to show that there is in fact a huge interest for metal. And that can’t be all bad!

How big are you in Sweden?

Not nearly big enough!! To be honest it is a quite the challenge to hit big in this oblong country of ours. It’s almost impossible to book shows outside your own town since every town has dozens and dozens of top notch bands. You have to play a lot to be a big band, and to play a lot you have to be a big band. So it’s like catch 22! But we are growing at a slow pace. We just released an awesome record so we’ll see where this will lead us.

How do you manage to cope Daemonicus with your families and your other projects?

Coping with Daemonicus and work/families and free times and such is not a problem really. We only rehearse when we are about to record something or if we are doing a show since our drummer lives almost 1000km from us. We try to plan everything as good as possible. If Daemonicus would play more shows maybe it would turn into a problem, but that’s a problem we would like to have!

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us. Anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks to you as well! There’s nothing more to add except that we hope to see a lot of Daemonicus fans on the road this year!
Other than that. Take care and rock on!!!

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

Apollonian Eyes is the third EP of Sweden's Septekh, though if what I'm reading is correct, the first two had the same track list. Thus far, the band seems limited to this particular format, not that I'm complaining, since if an artist isn't ready with enough material for a full-length, then there's no reason to squander space on garbage just to fill one. Also, the energetic hybrid of death and thrash Septekh creates lends itself well enough to a 15-20 minute listening, spurts of testosterone fueled mayhem that punches in and punches out for the after party. Aesthetically, there's not a broad gulf between this and The Seth Avalanche EP from last year. Similar stylized illustration cover art, and same general pursuit in the music, though I found a few of the moments more chaotic.

Best way to describe this is a mixture of, say Witchery or Maze of Torment with a more cruisin', crashin' death & roll undercurrent that is felt heavily through some of the burgeoning chord progressions and drums. They'll veer from dense, staccato palm muted thrash guitars ("Apollonian Eyes", "Burn it to the Ground") to a few patterns of rolling chords redolent of the whole D-beat movement in death metal. Leads are well enough put together, with a frenzied hard rock neo-blues style to them more than classical shred elements. Once in a while they'll shift over into something unexpected, like the blasting and tremolo picking in "Cursing the Skies" which cedes to an almost melodic death metal aesthetic, but even there they'll turn 90 degrees back into the thrash rhythms, so there's still a sense of consistency throughout. On the last EP, I felt as if the vocals were a bit too over the top in the mix, akin to Raise Hell's sophomore album Not Dead Yet (actually an overall solid comparison for the Septekh in general), but I think here on these tunes I was able to phase it out a little. Not that I loved the singing, but it was appropriately brash, bruising, and bloody.

The drums are effectively raw and abrasive, and the bass player has a tendency to go wild (like the noodling in closer "Vlad Tepes"). In terms of songwriting, all four pieces here give the impression that they're actually going somewhere, but Septekh only half-involves itself in creating variation for the listener. Some of the riff progressions feel all too familiar (like the intro to "Vlad Tepes" which is similar to many other melodic death cuts from bands like At the Gates in the mid 90s), and others are just kind of bland. But at the very least they strike an acceptable balance of business and flashiness that the music leaps straight out at you, like a great cat stalking you through the wild. Lyrically, this seems a little less raunchy and raucous than the last EP, with no mention of 'sluts' among the song title. Ultimately, though, I felt pretty much an identical reaction that I did last year. Vivacious, hellish energy, and this niche certainly has room for a few exciting bands, but the guitars and choruses weren't exactly sticky, and too soon forgotten. That said, if you're into any of the bands I listed earlier in the review, there's a chance you'll feel this.

Verdict: Indifference [6.25/10]

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by From the Dust Returned

Image

By autothrall

I'll say it up front, fellas: you deserve a better logo than this, so cough up the $50 or $100 and have someone design it. A typewriter font with the shadowed text seems a little cheesy and below the music on this very disc. Dead Awaken is a Swedish band, that, from first impression, play some war/death metal in the vein of Bolt Thrower, Jungle Rot, Sodom or Invasion (US). Refreshingly, this has an 'old school' vibe to it, but the Swedes are not exactly your garden variety millionth Entombed clone or the latest suffocating cavern-core sensation. No, these guys have been honing their craft since the earlier 'Oughts, with a sizable succession of demos that have led to this Abyss Records debut; upon which they strip down the genre to its roots without sounding like a pale imitation of one of their forebears.

Granted, these guys aren't exactly nuclear scientists in the field, and innovation is not a factor in their writing, but there's something inarguably refreshing about how they hand you your ass. Loads of double bass drumming in step to the palm muted riffing sequences, and a great, audible bass guitar tone that bumps straight through the rhythm guitar. Like an artillery unit, their rhythm sections just levels the theater of operation, shelling from a safe distance and then sweeping up with tanks and foot soldiers only after the smoke clears. Tracks are kept concise and concussive ("Mudhell"), with a lot of ballast and groove to them that often reminded me of a cross-breed of Bolt Thrower and Pestilence, a beating I am only happy to receive. Occasionally, the riff patterns in the belly of tunes like "Carnivore" will adapt a more surgical, thrashing visage which reminds me of early 90s Sodom (i.e. Tapping the Vein) due to the strong presence of the bass. But they'll also set up some more dramatic instances with sliding melodies ("Deutsches Afrika Corpse") or slower, strutting mute patterns ("Rocket Symphony") that express a dynamic range across the album as a whole.

Vocals are very brute and sincere, with a hint of Karl Willetts if not nearly so bleak and grim. Not incredibly expressive or memorable, but when spent over the tightness of the instruments, they deliver constant punches to the gut. I also like that Dead Awaken retain consistency across a good range of tempos...when laying on the acceleration for "Envy the Dead", for instance, the musicianship never falls off. Leads are a little messy and they'll flash through one ear and out the other, and naturally since the band don't load on a lot of samples or effects, nor do they engage in the slower, glorious Bolt Thrower melodic textures, the only plausible 'atmosphere' to the record is strictly in its violence. Where Hope Turns Dripping Red isn't exactly riddled with amazing guitar progressions that you'll want to keep pressing 'repeat' on, but absorbing oneself in the sum 34 minutes of the experience is nonetheless fun, and I enjoy that they don't wax nostalgic to a fault; there are flurries of hostility here that might also engage the brutal death crowd, even if Dead Awaken don't tango with that same high level of technicality. In the end, this is just good death metal. Period.

Verdict: Win [7.5/10]

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by The Small Takeover

Image

By Chris

The Gates of Slumber are a band I've heard a lot of good things about but never really paid attention to although the three words that surround the band's reputation are essential doom metal. Whether or not you think music of any genre is essential is entirely your decision unless of course doctors have started prescribing it in doses to their patients. "Take two grindcore tablets, you might feel a quick sharp shock and acquire the taste but the initial digestion will be immediate with no side effects".

It's all too easy to be cynical about re-issues where there are too many bands vying for your attention, music is mainly kept in digital form on a computer and most re-issues are just cash-ins on a band's previous success. This trio produce some of the most well-played and well written doom metal that it isn't surprising to be mentioned in the same sentence as Candlemass and the more obvious, Black Sabbath. This re-release of the bands 2004 output is well worth getting your grimy hands on.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

Another Swedish death metal band. How many are there really? Does it never end? It’s good then that I’m a huge sucka for Swedish death metal, or any other death metal for that matter. I can’t seem to get enough of this stuff no matter where it comes from. Where I had hoped for a Dismember-ish death metal assault I got more of a Morbid Angel kind. This is heavy the way that “Blessed Are The Sick” is heavy. I get a strong 1990 Earache vibe from this album. I can almost smell the thick paper cover and the black vinyl. That is how much this brings me back to a time much simpler. And no, I’m not being nostalgic. It just hit me how much this sounds like my youth. But as they say, what once was good will always be good. So if it worked back then why would it not work now?

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by The Small Takeover

Image

By Chris

Whether it's fortunate or unfortunate that geographical locations are often used to describe a band's music is difficult to say, especially in the case of metal. References such as Bay Area thrash, Japanese hardcore don't really hurt but rather aid both a listener and give a reviewer an easy reference points. It's fairly easy to know what you're in for when you're told a band is Swedish death metal although on Septekh may well be from Sweden, the band's latest release "Apollonian Eyes" is much more than run of the mill old school death metal. There's a potpourri of metallic styles at work that is reminiscent of Demontage.

Vitriolic deathly vocals are spat out in the title track but there are mixture of blackened death metal riffs with chunks of Maiden. It's also clear that these guys are fans are of early Kreator especially in "Burn it To The Ground" which sounds like it could have been written in the early eighties by the German thrashers. In places the drums don't sound quite as tight though but that only contributes to an even grittier death and roll sound. Tasty power metal and new wave of British metal chunks are dealt out on "Vlad Tapes" and regardless of your poker face, it's definitely a winning hand . The usage of both the traditional metal riffs and blackened metal within their old school death metal style, it's clear Septekh are not content to keep to the stale cookie cutter pattern.

The main complaint with this release is its too short. The band keep this listener wanting to hear more from them.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.hardrockinfo.com

Image

By Jimmy Blom

So, this band is still alive? I got some demos with them a couple of years ago, but after that I haven't heared anything. But now their debut album is here, and the music has changed a bit, 'cus diden't they play grind before? I might be totally wrong about that, but anyway.. This time they play death metal that goes on like a bulldozer in a war, and it's really good indeed.
The band is nowadays a duo (trio when they play live) from Västerås, Sweden. DEAD AWAKEN have actually been around for over 10 years already, but there has only been demos until now.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by Zombie Ritual Zine

Image

By Victor Varas

Is this another death/thrash metal band combining incisive guitar riffs with aggressive lines? Well, they are from Sweden and truly they know what they are doing. This is the third EP released in three years and I liked the way they compose high octane lines and hyper violent melodies. Of course they have all the Swedish old sound coming from the early 90’s, but they also know how to take advantage of the musical skills and everyone did a great job on the recording. These four tracks are forged in aggression and metallic blood, as we notice the great structure in “Vlad Tepes” which is my favorite track, btw. Vocalist sounds crude and thrashers, and the result is balanced between aggression and epic lines. I can’t say that this is the most original EP I’ve heard this year, but the band sounds great and very mature musically speaking. It’s recommended for those who are looking for good metal bands growing up from the Nordic underground scene. At last, I have to say that the cover art is the most HORRIBLE I’ve seen these years, and I hope they’ll get a cover artist soon.
