Chapel of Disease are an old-school-death-metal-revival band who are gaining a lot of momentum at the moment, and I decided to recommend them when I was reminded by someone posting Ataraxy. Chapel of Disease play thrashy death metal with infectiously memorable riffs and vocals which are old-school to the core. The band go down a less atmospheric, less crushing road than many of their contemporaries, but nonetheless really pack a lot of punch with tight musicianship and guitar tone which cuts like an angle-grinder. If I wasn't a heretic who's never listened to Morbid Angel, I would tell you that that is what they sound like, because every account I've had of the band mentions it.

I might also recommend Scotland's very own Bonesaw, who are Autopsy worship done very nicely indeed. Really filthy, energetic punk-ridden, d-beat fuelled gory death metal with the occasional bit of grind thrown in to taste. What emerges is a sound which really covers all of the tempos from a doomy swagger right through to blastbeats. Likewise a very old-school sounding band, although in this case, you really get the impression that rather than being overtly intentional, that sound just sort of happened.

I have two bands to share:

Stygian - Earthly Homicide (1988)

The band isn't that obscure, but their first demo surely is. The guitar work on here is great; especially the last guitar solo is absolutely amazing.

Blood Spill - Playground of Death (1988)

The first and probably only demo from this band is some serious old school death metal, but with a few twists. There are only three songs on it, each being around 9 (!) minutes long. The songs have massive build-ups and extended solo/bridge parts, which is rather uniqe in death metal.

Someone here introduced me to these guys: Depresy

Interesting Slovakian take on Atmospheric/Melodic Death Metal.

This rules, thanks for the heads up!!

To add:

Battlemaster - I love this band. D&D themed blackened death metal with a lot of technical flair that never sounds "tech". I never see them talked about which is a huge shame as they are a fantastic band. Excellent songwriting with riffs on riffs on riffs on riffs with phenominal drumming courtesy of Alex Tomlin and scathing vocals from Andy Horn (ex-Cannabis Corpse). All their output is great but the Warthirsting and Winterbound album, split with Inter Arma, Spells, Boots, and Portals demo, and Dragon Mutilating Demos CS are my personal favorites.

Probably me, eh. I'm always whoring them. :p

It's interesting how people talk about Disaffected more often than not but no one seems to know Sacred Sin much, apart from Portuguese fans that is. And even more when they share the lead singer. Their first three albums are all pretty good stuff, Morbid Angel/Nocturnus worhip but with a more dark and ritualistic use of keyboards than the sci-fi concept of the later. Some cool tunes below.

Don't mind me constantly bringing this thread back - I keep remembering bands.

Black Magician are a UK doom band who go down quite a warm keyboard-laden road, and sound very close to the earth andf nature in their music; while some doom is very claustrophobic, this record feels bright and sunny, as the albums artwork would suggest. It exudes a real feel of wide-open spaces, trees swaying in a gentle breeze, and the like. There's a noticeable vein of prog, with a really cool primitive keyboard sound which wouldn't be amiss in the 60's and 70's. There is a hefty dose of variety, too, with lengthy acoustic pieces and other diversions from the typical riff-laden nature of doom, which, may I add, is also present - the mixture makes for an album which is very dynamic and listenable. The vocalist sounds a lot like Lee Dorrian, which you can take to be an advantage or disadvantage based on your persuasion.

Spoiler: show

Infirmity
A underground death metal band out of southern California. They are pretty sick!
Every song of theirs is different, one of the newer bands that aren't completely boring.

Come on, don't plug your own band without at least disclosing that. Others seem to disagree about how boring you are, with the highest review being 50%

Panning the river, I found a review for a strong demo. I listened, and dredged up this thread from its bed of rotting roots.

Lier in Wait
Immersie Obscura - the Equinox of the Gods:

Track 1 -Unity/The Temple in the Forest
Track 2 - Follow the Winds (To Resurrection)
Track 3 - In the Shadow of the Inquisitor

You missed one (track 3). :p

Pretty awkward that I've never heard of this before, with both members being part of bands that I have in high regard.

I searched the threads for any mention of this band called 'Old Chapel' but nothing till September last year.
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Old ... 3540354843
The band is from Russia and they play a mix of death and doom/death.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGgafl82RWs (from this year's EP)
Their previous (and only) album has slightly different vocals, some seriously gurgly vocals. They sound quite weird in a way and could be a dealbreaker. Luckily the music makes up for it and I guess I've gotten used to them.

Endermic were a Finndeath band with mostly midpaced riffs. Above average.

I don't know if they have already been mentioned - and even though the reviews aren't that 'famous' - but I consider them a strong case of good melodic black metal:

Nocti Vagus - http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Nocti_Vagus/11704

They only released an album and later on went to form/join other bands (Graven and Horna, for example).

For some reason I don't think I've ever seen mention of a project by former Horna vocalist Corvus called Korgonthurus. They have a bunch of demos, splits and EP's that I've never heard but their only full-length, "Marras" is very good. Definitely for fans of drawn-out repetitive/mesmerizing Finnish black metal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiR1H5kkm0w

Also check out another Finnish band called Numinous, which has bit more weirdness going on in the riffery:

I think I've mentioned Korgonthurus on some occasions. Marras and the Musta Kappeli split are quite gorgeous. I don't think Korgonthurus qualifies as a nobody band, however, since Corvus sang in Horna after all...

Ah, sorry, I guess they're more well-known than I thought. I was under the impression they were less-talked about than other Horna-related bands like Sargeist, Mortualia and Totalselfhatred.

Well, they are that, but I wouldn't consider it a nobody band.

Here are some nobodies of Finnish black metal:
Phlegein: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzSpbdL18d4
Dark, dismal stuff, but with some quite kickass riffs. Excellent production values, I'd say.
Valonsurma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-kIc-81zTc
Quite similar to Phlegein, but darker and with totally shitty production. The above track is from their unreleased demo, which has much better production and sound quality that the actually released one.
Rautavaris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ZdVYENDOk
Rather peculiar and quite diverse stuff. With a strange sense of melody, mostly not very extreme.
Aura Saturnal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY2qavJ9C14
Very lo-fi stuff, especially recommended for fans of Azhubham Haani (if such people even exist)
Nidhoggr: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0QLy-SZ ... 86&index=3
Quite lo-fi, basement black metal with depressive overtones. The artist killed himself, and it's not that hard to guess from the music. From 1994, which makes it all the more interesting.

Ah yes, Phlegein are very cool. I was drawn to them due to their promo pic here on MA and the album art for the new album, which are both interesting.

I'll have to check out those others, thanks!

No problem. Phlegein's full-length is pretty decent, but Ancient Battlegrounds is better in my opinion.

I checked Mareritt from this thread, and it reminded me of a Norwegian now-defunct nobody band, Castrum Doloris:

Definitely worthwhile black metal. Atmospheric stuff with some catchy riffs aswell. I love the title track of their demo.

I'm going to throw the same band out there that I do with every incarnation of threads similar to this:

RAZOR FIST

I don't really listen to much thrash. I have my favorites and like everyone else here I am aware there are certain albums that are sort of canonical and impossible not to enjoy if you're a metalhead in thrash, but even then, most of my preferences in the genre tend to have a heavy helping of death metal in them (Sepultura, Sadus, Demolition Hammer) and I don't really go out hunting for third-rate thrash bands or actively listen to it the same way I do black, death or trad metal. In addition, the whole retro-thrash thing that finally seems to be tapering off is mostly awful schlock; fulla bands that heard Bonded by Blood and thought merely listening to it and headbanging wasn't good enough, they had to go recreate it in the studio. I didn't even like Exodus to begin with! There are a few bands that shine through the shit, though. Exmortus is one (on their first album anyways). Vektor is another. The third, and maybe even my favorite of them all, is Razor Fist.

It's weird to lump them in to the retro-thrash thing because while yes, they did form in the 21st century, their music brings to life the forever neglected and forgotten subgenre: SPEED METAL. Thrash and power's bastard offspring that never really came unto its own cause it was too dorky for thrashers and too hardcore for power metal nerds, this takes the best of both worlds. Face melting riffs at spine-snapping tempos stapling themselves to your brain instantly because of how crazily melodic and hooky they are. A vocalist that just shrieks and does this crazy Tim Baker-eqsue thing (some have compared him to Conklin but I don't see it due to the tunelessness) but somehow it fits perfectly and makes the music even more wild and unrestrained. Through it all, there's this larger-than-life rockstar vibe emanating from the sounds they're making; even though I know they're just a bunch of dirty fuckers from Wisconsin, at the end of "Loud Into the Night" when TK Xanax says loudly, proudly and without any sort of uncertainty that they're "gonna take over the fucking world" with metal, for that brief moment, I genuinely believe him.

Zarach Baal Tharagh - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54dgYEXZOzA

French Black Metal if I remember. The guy has about a hundred demo releases and some splits, all of roughly the same quality. Some recordings are better than the majority of others, but this is raw black metal from the heart and I appreciate it for what it is. D.I.Y fun, and the guy even makes his own pedals! I need to buy some of his releases soon, I just missed a sale on a full length though. If anyone has any decent prices, feel free to PM me.

Brainstorm, from Ukraine - http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Brainstorm/45088

This band quite literally sounds like nothing else I have ever heard before. I've got their "Lords..." demo on casette, but a kind feller on YouTube posted almost their whole discography. They changed their name to Graal and released a full-length, recycling some of the songs from Brainstorm's life cycle. The live 7" EP is absolutely murderous, it will put you in a state of mind to kill and smear blood on yourself around a bonfire.

"My Total Vision" from the live 7" EP - http://tinyurl.com/cq2kmxd

If you like Vali, definitely check out Skumring. It's the Vali guy's doom band. It's vaguely death/funeral doom-ish, but has a lot of Vali-ish folk touches that work really well, plus the vocals are really beautiful clean female vocals.

My go-to "totally obscure but totally awesome" band is Starseed. Some awesome, keyboard augmented death metal from the mid 90s with a sci fi theme and a great vocalist with memorable melodies and expertly written riffs. I pimped them a bit when I was still new around here, but now that I have legions of fans and am obviously super important or whatever now, I suppose now is a great time to try to give their sole EP some exposure.

Thought I might share this evening's discovery with everyone; Sweden's Rust. I haven't done much "research" yet, but it's blistering, cold and solid as hell black-thrash, with plenty of grit, which the band seem to manage to reconcile with a really austere black-metal atmosphere. I'd recommend it for fans of Nekromantheon, Aura Noir, and Deathhammer. If it hasn't been a Fenriz' band of the week yet, I expect it might be soon.

But wait... there's more; All of their stuff is up on bandcamp for a "pay what you like" amount. I know what I'll be listening to tomorrow.

EDIT: Yup - they've been Fenriz' band of the week, just checked.

Hey, I actually hear the resemblance here. :D I'll need some time to let it sink in but this sounds pretty great, the riffs are thick and cavernous and there are some pretty sweet melodies going on here. So glad I made this thread right about now.

Oh, god, don't remind me.

Anyways, I guess I might as well share another couple of bands here. First would be Bone Ritual, who were actually recommended to me here sometime last year but I forgot about them until very recently. It's extremely, horribly downtuned music (there are no guitars, only bass) and it's pretty hard to classify for that reason alone. MA has them tagged as "black metal" but honestly they're so subsonic that it could be practically anything. Melodies peek out from the sludginess on occasion, but above all genres, expect crushingly slow, exotic and tribally-injected metal.

The second band aren't as obscure as a lot of things being posted in this thread, but I think they fit the bill because I'm surprised how underground they've remained despite the type of music they play being the sort of thing extreme-inclined metalheads eat up: Ehnahre. They're formed by ex-members of Kayo Dot, so there's a certain level of weirdness to be expected. I guess the best way to sum them up would be that they're a mix of Portal and Khanate, with the dissonant riffs of the former and the minimalistic drone/noise of the latter. The few people I've talked to about them seem to agree that Taming the Cannibals is their best album, so I'll leave a sample from that one here:

Any one else into Corpus Vile (UK)? Pretty cool band, a nice mix of crust and melodic doom. The production is pretty raw, but it doesn't obscure the melody or songwriting and fits in with the crust aspect. It's really a shame they broke up, apparently they had everything for an album written before calling it quits. One of the bands I listened to heavily when I was 15 and really getting into metal.

I decided to contribute to the thread with a little band called Criterion. They're from Norway, and play Death Metal. I don't know how to really describe it, but in one of the videos a guy said they sound like "Dynamic and technical brutal death metal, somewhere between Morbid Angel and Malevolent Creation". I haven't a clue what Malevolent Creation sound like, but I hear bits of Morbid Angel in there and it sounds pretty technical, so I trust the person's judgment.
They only have one album, so I'll post the link to that and to two songs. Here ya go:

Also hopefully they take it as a sign they're not meant to make more albums.

My go-to "totally obscure but totally awesome" band is Starseed. Some awesome, keyboard augmented death metal from the mid 90s with a sci fi theme and a great vocalist with memorable melodies and expertly written riffs.

reminds me of god dethroned for some reason...

Mostly extreme metal here I see. Let's go with something non-extreme now.

Slander is an excellent heavy metal band that never really had their time. They released one album in 1991 called "Careless Talk Costs Lives" which is a forgotten gem of awesome heavy metal. This album was reissued recently by Stormspell Records with an extra disc containing recently re-recorded songs as well as some new material. I've found that not a lot of people have heard about this band, so I though it fit the thread.

Force of darkness, a chilean black/thrash band with slightly rough production with a lot of fast tremolo leads and a few solos scattered around, vocals are a muffled mix between immortal and a traditional black metal rasp; reminds me a bit of niefelheim. They have a bunch of demos out but only two albums from 2006 and 2010.

Thanks, now I have something to contribute in "Worst bands on the archives" thread :)
