Nothing that was played on the radio countless times. No Led Zeppelin, no Van Halen or Guns N Roses. No Motley Crue or Pink Floyd or Queen. Is there any good hard rock out there that I haven't heard yet?

One-hit wonders could work, if we're talking about those songs which were not their one-hit. Or underground bands that had a couple good songs but never made it big. I haven't really explored this genre aside from the big names on those classic rock stations. I'm curious to see what you all have got!

The first album each of Wishbone Ash and Captain Beyond are great early 70s classic rock.

Wishbone Ash - Lady Whiskey
Wishbone Ash - Phoenix

Captain Beyond - Dancing Madly Backwards (On a Sea of Air) / Armworth / Myopic Void
Captain Beyond - Mesmerization Eclipse

Some of the songs on the Captain Beyond album run together like different parts of one long song, so that's why there's three together in that first CB link. Also the Captain Beyond singer is original Deep Purple singer Rod Evans. And I think one or two of the other members were in Iron Butterfly.

I'm going to assume you're familiar with Thin Lizzy from "The Boys are Back in Town" but if you're not familiar with the rest of their discography then you need to rectify that NOW. I would highly recommend starting with Black Rose and Johnny the Fox although every album is good.

You should also look into UfO, the album Phenomenon in particular. Rock Bottom is a banger of a song.

try out some Karo. Very fine metallic hard rock/aor from germany. Their only album "Heavy Birthday" is full
of highly infectious songs...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8vYhHxbe-M (the first 30 secs or so it's not great but then it slays!)

Some more bands I have in my mind... gonna post them later this day...

Blackfoot: heavy Southern rock that kicks ass. Strikes album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKQGAJQb1TI

Montrose: you probably know them, but if not, it's essential 70s hard rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJx-PU1bXIE

Krokus: sometimes overlooked, great AC/DC-ish hard rock/metal. I like their '82 album One Vice At A Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jARc-F_lXc0

Axe: another overlooked band from the early 80s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MvO1U01J4Q

If you dont mind progressive stuff you HAVE to check out this bands.

Camel: huge inspiration for people like Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt, top notch old school progressive rock
from the 70s.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTVnCyDoQlQ

Humble Pie: hard rock, really HARD rock. Late 60s, early 70s. One of my favourite bands from that era, sadly forgotten.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lxyRjzXvxo

UFO: a really big name of the genre, if you are not fond on them you should take a look at their gorgeous discography, after all Michael Schenker is probably one of the most influential guitar players ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpUsULr_uLw

Attomic Rooster: Bluesy, progressive hard rock, really 70s. Check out. The vocals remind me of Danzig (by the way if you dont know about Glenn Danzig solo career check out because its one of the greatest hard rock bands ever)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVf7SG1-DGg

Sir Lord Baltimore: crazy, on drugs, acid rock. One of the few bands thats actually on the archives, great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yFGGXMFp0w

Soft Machine: really guitar driven progressive rock, awesome stuff, similar to Gentle Giant, Rush and Yes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gpaMTgBCx0

Gentle Giant (yes im more on the proggy side of rock)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWfmfgHXAfE

Lucifer´s Friend: such a great heavy rock band, amazing stuff from the 70s.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5DpOdf-_yM

There are lots of bands that you might or might not heard, theres a huge "semi big" names such as Nazareth, Uriah Heep, Budgie, Boston, Kansas, Asia...if you look for an 80s hard rock glammy vibe theres Tuff, Ratt, Pretty Boy Floyd, Britny Fox, Cats in Boots, Keel...etc

I assume you're not interested in over-the-top cheesy hard-rock/aor? However if you are let me know - in that
case I would have quite a lot.

For now I recommend this pomp/hard-rock act called Grand Prix. Their album "Samurai" is brillant hard rock
with some slight prog touches.

I'd highly recommend Ashbury and another band I've recently been rec'd myself, called Winterhawk.

I love the The Snow Goose, but no way is it a hard rock album, especially considering Flight of the Snow Goose and The Snow Goose are the "heaviest" songs on it.

Gamma: featuring Ronnie Montrose on guitar.
Sounds something like a mix of UFO and Robin Trower.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tOKg1VgaJ4

Speaking of UFO, how about some Fastway...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5_oPyavUaw
I know they were popular and on the radio when their debut album was released, but I'm thinking they might be pretty well off the radar at this point ?

Pink Fairies

Maybe too well known to mention, but in case you haven't checked out Triumph yet...

Have you heard Legend's "From the Fjords"? It's a mix of 70s hard rock, epic heavy metal, and prog rock. They split up shortly after making one album in 1979 and it's amazing, just listen to the whole thing.

More metal than hard rock at times, but nonetheless, people are missing out.

(probably more heavy metal than hard rock and better known than the rest, but great nonetheless).

I was very busy when I made this topic so I'm just starting to go through all the links. So, bump.

So far Wishbone Ash is very good, I'd like to get a couple of their CDs. Captain Beyond too, but I had heard them before. Will post more as I go through

You might want to check out The Alan Parson's Project, it's Conceptual progressive/art rock, sounds a bit like Pink Floyd at times.

Mountain are great.

I can hardly imagine that you don't know Rainbow, but it hasn't been mentioned yet so there ya go.

Some other well known names that didn't come up, just so we have them out of the way:
Jethro Tull - particularly Aqualung, more on the folk side of progressive rock, but with the occassional riff thrown in for good measure
Alice Cooper - particularly Love It To Death and Billion Dollar Babies
