RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://forbidden-magazine.com

Image

By Nate of the Living Dead

You kids these days…let me tell ya! Not to give those impressionable, trend-hopping minds the opportunity to slap some kind of stupid-ass label on me for saying this, but at the age of thirty-five, I’ve reached the point where I’ve seen and heard enough clueless and even disrespectful behavior at the hands of the modern day floor-punching, karate-kid-in-the-pit mob, without a doubt. I’m talking about the practically fresh-outta-the-womb set that claim with every ounce of their being that they’re legit hellraisers while never even putting forth any effort or paying any dues whatsoever, when it comes to the immense world of extreme music. Sure, you and three or four of your best buddies started a band and annoyed the shit out of your parents practicing for a week in the garage before for your first and only show…while your little sister slaved away making your band’s myspace or facebook profile oh so impressive to the poorly photoshopped “sikk and br00tal” crowd. Sure, you’ve tried unbelievably hard to sound exactly like a billion other shit bands. Sure, your band has a couple of “rad” t-shirt designs out there, chock full of bubbly, neon-as-fuck artwork with a teddy bear eating a defenseless little bunny, or some shit like that.
Your band undoubtedly tried for a whole week to get that shit up for sale at the local Hot Topic, where all the cool kids hang out. And sure, I know…you and your allegedly amazing band have probably played a handful of shows at the local Elks lodge, church picnic or decrepit all-ages venue. Your band has only played out with a few other assholes you know from school, who all have the same rockstar attitude, and their band is just as lousy as your band and you all know you‘re a dime a dozen. You think you and your swoop-haired pals are breaking out, making a big mark on the metal landscape. But, hear this ye of growing and/or oblivious minds: you don’t know shit! You haven’t seen shit! And, maybe most importantly, you haven’t done shit! You’ve all got a lot to learn about artistic integrity and keeping one’s nose to the proverbial grindstone. Bear witness to the kind of band that ripped shit apart from the ground up in the 80’s, alongside greats like Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, and Suffocation…and came back from the dead to do it all over again! Take notice of Indianapolis death/grind warlords, Radiation Sickness!
The band’s lonnng awaited new release, Reflections of a Psychotic Past (Abyss Records), is coupled here with the o.g. 1990 release, The Other Me: A Journey into Insanity. Yes, vocalist Doug Palmer (from Innndiaaanapolllliis) and cohorts have clawed their way out of the grave and administered a double dose of mind-melting crossover annihilation. It’s the kind of shit your mom should’ve warned you about, the very second your shitty metalcore band even picked up guitars. With inspiration forged from the likes of Napalm Death, Slayer and D.R.I., this collection is proof positive that Radiation Sickness have not only stuck to their guns, but can still deliver with the same lethality as they did twenty years ago. This time around, we see a simultaneous delivery of the old and new. With the newer material taking on a more old school death metal approach, at least by way of riffing and percussion (see “Demented Love Song 2”, “Tripping in the Seas of Madness”, and “Graveside View”), the older side of this collection contains a more thrash-related element here and there (such as “Disfigured Retard“ and “No Future“)…and even strays into a vibe reminiscent of Suicidal Tendencies on “Escape to Insanity”.
Filled to the brim with a sentiment rooted in the dark, real life realms of depression, hopelessness, and human mortality, this collection shows that Radiation Sickness stayed their post the first time around, and have more than what it takes to run with today’s pack with just as much sincere ferocity, if not more in some cases. What we have here is nineteen raging tracks that serve as positive proof Radiation Sickness are indeed back from the fucking dead!!

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Tania Gimenez

Despite what the views of many people, have always believed that the musical diversity that today inhabit the world of metal is something really good, very positive in many ways. But, like everything in life has its drawbacks is that, with so many styles, blends and innovations in the end few bands manage to be innovative and interesting, few manage to stand out by presenting a proposed original and different from the rest. The young group DISEIM Death Metal, with his debut album, "Holy Wrath" also achieved note to do something new.
The Death of DISEIM merges with numerous and obvious influences of doom metal, plus a choking sound, where the atmosphere plays an important role. Always dark atmospheres that could remind the genre big names like AUTOPSY, and the truth is that they also opt for a very classic sound and production, capturing a sound always dirty. To this core of heavy rhythms (usually slow) and dense environments always added an interesting (and sometimes necessary) dose of melody (usually provided largely by the guitars, which discharge a diverse work) that are combined in few moments with groove-laden rhythms, getting through all this a really enjoyable end result and varied.
A job as the old guard within this Doom / Death could not have another composition as the one in this "Holy Wrath", a simple approach that makes his subjects more honest.
"Holy Wrath" is a good and varied album (which you will maintain interest from first to last riff) by DISEIM, a band that practices a vintage style and admired by many. Offer nothing new, but have potential, they sound really good and awaken the interest of nostalgia.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.crossfire-metal.de

Image

By Daniel Müller

Sometimes I wonder already, who is coming after so many years crawled out of the holes. The Norwegian Firm I know from former times. Their second album "Silence", the very sound technically on "Clouds" reminded of Tiamat, I loved those days. "A Celebration of Death" is their first album in seventeen years, defeated! I can still see the time! And it's good to know that they have forgotten how to still even after such a long time. Slow somber with little tinny production, but fits well with the sound of the band, they let go, as there had been such a long break ever. The song still sounds hoarse and nastier than before. Musically, nothing has changed. Usually slow and somber guitar melodies it is going sadly. The album's overall balance is very slow. But it has the sound of proof has always been identified and does not interfere in the slightest. Whether that works live, I will put one there. But the evil atmosphere of the album works on CD for sure! Underground Maniacs is not to say that there is "A Celebration of Death" in addition to the regular CD and a vinyl-and even a cassette version! This is old school! Welcome back!

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://www.mariosmetalmania.com

Image

By Kees Schijven

MAAX started out in the summer of 2006 by founding members Kyle Kreider (guitar) and Jeff Brown (drums). MAAX have already released a debut album 'Dawnbringer' in 2009, after which original vocalist/bassplayer Sky Kingrey left the band. The band found an interested independant label in Abyss Records who released their album. Soon after that the 'Six Pack Witchcraft'EP was released in 2010. Newest addition to the band followed in the person of Jeremy Starkey (Necrophagous) on bass, while Brett switched to second guitar. In this line up the band recorded their latest, third opus and second full lenght work of art, called 'Unholy Rock & Roll'. MAAX plays a mix of old school black thrash n roll metal, A lot of Motorhead and Venom influences can be heard throughout their music, just listen to the song 'Maax' and you know what I mean, nothing wrong with that, certainly not since I am a long time fan of both mentioned bands. So originallity is not their main goal, that's for sure, but what they do, they do best, they will get every party going, they are the US equivalent of european thrashers Tankard, though with a slightly different kind of music. The devil of rock n roll has arrived, his name; MAAX, songs like 'Rot n Roll', 'Do What Thou Wilt', or 'Black Thrash Em All' tell it all. This is a very enjoyable album, not the most technical or original, but efficiently well done. To my personal favorite tracks belong 'Overthrone' (really black) , 'Black Thrash Em All' with black raspy vocals and thrashing guitars. The production could have been done a little heavier or fatter, especially where the drums are concerned, but overall it's a great, enjoyable album!

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by http://www.wintertorment.com

Image

By Patrick

vortex of death is hat's {or hate in norse, swedish language} second release.looking at the band's bio it looks like the band originally started in 1993 {under the name ravnr} and was on hiatus until 2006 when the duo returned as hat. this is defintly a must hear if you are a fan of the "classic" cold, grim black metal that norway is best known to produce.the band has a great sound and are obviously know their instruments as they play the old-school style of norwegian black metal but they do it with enough original ideas they don't come off sounding like a 3rd rate clone.defintly a must hear for fans of old-school norwegian black.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) "The Spirit of Warfare" CD review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By Paul Maddison

Following 10 years of work, Sweden’s Hyperborean debut starts with furious drumming and many progressive metal guitar influences that will infect your hearing; this is music with soul, in a black metal genre I often find lacking this trait. Purists will slay it for being too “clean”; there are thankfully no inclusions of synths or keyboards in any of the major song structures and it does not pretend to be lo-fi rubbish that infects the scene from time to time. To be really critical, some of the mixing is a little hit and miss, but you are reminded that this is thinking mans melodic death/black metal, the tracks are strong enough to carry off any misgivings you may want to find in this effort in relation to the mix.
‘The Sick Man of Europe’ in particular is teeming with a genuine state of execution; there is a consistent flow throughout the effort. This is a release especially for fans of Abigor, Limbonic Art and little bits and pieces of latter day Immortal, its not in the same league, but a positive step in the right direction ensuring that the long wait for this album is certainly worthwhile.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By Angel "Kilmistered"

The Swedes (Sormjole, Vasterbotten) deathsters Daemonicus, formed in February 2006 and have to their credit three demo, an EP and two full length albums. Four months after their formation, they released their first demo "Demo From Hell", on the symbolic date of 06/06/06, and the lyrics refer to zombies and opposed to religion in general. The Deadwork is the second full length album of the band consists of ten tracks. Very good album and at several points reminded me Bloodbath, little Asphyx, Entombed touches and old schoolila generally. It is a serious and solid circulation, standing decently in other species and their stink 'Souidila' from mileage. We know what we hear, because they do not play anything special - as regards innovation - but certainly our view through their own style. Very good production, which showcases the volume of tracks and their robustness. Worthy. The 'Deadwork' was recorded separately and what I mean by that ... The Fenix ??Recording Studios was recording the drums (Johan Hallback) and CCHB Studios, recorded the guitars (PO Wester, Jorgen Persson), bass (Martin Pudas) and vocals (Stefan Hagstrom). The production was done by Daemonicus and Krille Englund and Krille Englund was the sound engineer. The mixing and mastering, done by Ronnie Bjornstrom of Enhanced Audio Productions in Garageland Studios (Umea). The artwork is the work of Daniel Devilish, while the booklet artwork are responsible Stefan Hagstrom and Henrik Olofsson. The band printed thirty thousand colored cards - double sided - and sent hundreds of work samples, magazines, zines and other "formula" to promote her work. From 'Daemonicus', stood out in particular "Nothing But Death".

Rating: 7.5/10

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

There are so many bands out there that even if I get to hear hundreds of them there are still twice as many if not more that I miss out on totally. Sometime I wish that there were more than 24 hours to a day just so that I could spend my time looking up all the great bands in the universe that we call metal. But since that won’t happen any time soon I’ll settle for the bands that do come my way. As with Erupted. This is another Swedish death metal act. I’ve lost count on how many there are of these acts out there. But as a sucker for anything Swedish death metal I’ll take on this one too. This is more mid tempo and kinda Grave-ish in style yet with an old school feel to it. All of a sudden it feels like I’m back in the late 80s/early 90s again. There are so many new great Swedish death metal acts to check out that it becomes hard to keep track of them all. And I seem to like them all. This one included.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://musikenimittliv.blogg.se

Image

By Rogga

Imagine Entombed, Dismember and Obituary in an unholy alliance. There we Corrosive Carcass from Sweden. The band I have had an eye on for a while and then I like short crude songs where the interest never fades and songs that scratch the way into the memory, the "Composition of flesh" a big favorite here at home. Ended monster "The end of us all" in eight minutes is the disc's longest track, otherwise kept it around the three-minute migration. Punk! ;-) The band has with his brutal death metal with elements of pure tones and fantastic låtsnickreri aroused the interest of much of the genre's fans and then this is just the beginning, I think CC will go far. This really is no disc in the crowd so check it out immediately. Death metal lives!

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://olddisgruntledbastard.wordpress.com

Image

By Old Disgruntled Bastard

One of the things that made Dissection so special, apart from overwhelming emotional resonance and almost genius-level songwriting, was that they straddled genres with the skill of an acrobat. While the feelings they evoked were trenchantly cold and sorrowful, keeping in line with conventional black metal, their approach to riffing and assembling a song owed far more to thrash and death metal. Recently, German band Thulcandra did this with equal elan, albeit little originality. Bane are a three-piece from Serbia that acknowledge their obvious inheritance, but fare better in establishing a more unique identity.

Bane aren’t afraid of using orchestral arrangements to create a grandiose atmosphere. Tastefully understated string and wind instruments pepper the band’s second album ‘The Acausal Fire’, sometimes interspersed with pagan, heroic-sounding hymns to old Gods that have more in common with Viking metal than Dissection. There are moments of subdued contemplation such as ‘Entering the Paradoxical Sphere‘ – not dissimilar to Summoning‘s ambient work on their Rings-inspired masterpieces – this is a beautiful composition, devoid of all distortion but breathtaking, almost cinematic, in its ambition and execution. Elsewhere, there are uplifting segments (‘As Chaos Rises’, ‘Light The Black Light’) appealing to the noble spirit within all life, almost always cruelly suppressed but on rare occasions capable of taking glorious flight.

Bane also have a more pronounced death metal edge; their cover of Dissection‘s ‘Night’s Blood’ is hands down one of the most violent renditions of the great band’s material. The music feels percussively intense, an aspect that serves to differentiate it from its hallowed forebear, making it “less black” yet more single-minded in intent. (As a random aside, you wouldn’t be mistaken to find parallels in Anata‘s peculiar style of riffing on first hearing ‘Light The Black Light’.)

Really, Bane do very little wrong here. A wide variety of vocals are employed - choirs, layered grunts and rasps. The drumming is invigorating, the guitars are dexterous and dripping with melody. Above all, the band showcases that rarest of indescribables – soul. One hopes they continue moving further away from being just a homage band; in all fairness, they’re doing enough even now to refute that tag. But they’re obviously capable of much more.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

New release for the Swedish Mörkö and Stockholm, the Septekh. Again it is an EP, the former is last year, HERE: http://www.metalhead.it/?p=6247 , while the first is in 2009. No full length, but a 15 'stratified into four songs that appear to be close to thrashand death metal, with clear references to Sodom and Motörhead. Seem less obvious references to black metal, than in the past and still a vague essence blackened seems to meander in some passages (as in "Cursing the Skies"). Four well-aimed blow, by a furious drumming, is Staffan Persson, and a snare drum sound with the box-like hit, a thrilling and fast-paced riffing even in only exercised by David Wikström, and of course the vocals of Nils Grznls Meseke with that scream snarling and bad. Complete the bottom of Patrik Ström that is well expressed and fills the sounds of the pieces. Among these "Vad Tepes", both for sewing beautiful embroidery of the guitars for rhythmic plenty of dynamics. A new interesting title for Septekh and who knows when you appresteranno to a future album, seen the good potential demonstrated to date.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://destructive-music.com

Image

By KIT RATHENAR

Dead Awaken were passed to me tagged as a melodic death metal band, but on listening to Where Hope Turns Dripping Red it became apparent that this was somewhat deceptive as in truth they’re a lot more death metal than they are melodic anything. And I’ll admit now that I’m not usually the world’s biggest fan of straight-up death metal, so Dead Awaken get major props for impressing me despite that fact. Reminding me of the late-eighties era when death metal as a concept was still being separated out and defined from the free-for-all that was the early extreme metal scene, they reprise a lot of what was best about that early sound and hammer it home with a solid, clear production, crushingly capable musicianship and some great riffs to nail the whole thing down. There’s plenty of snap-sharp staccato riffing, quality drum work of the high standard you need to hold an album like this together, some wicked pinch-harmonic leads, and the whole is topped off by some very traditional and brutally effective guttural vocals. The songwriting here really appeals to me, too – a lot of death metal puts me off with impenetrable structure and songs that come over as little more than random assortments of blastbeats and shredding, but Dead Awaken’s calling card is coherent, stylish songs with memorable hooks that show off their technical proficiency without becoming subservient to it. Colour me impressed.

Highlight tracks? It’s almost hard to choose, as there really isn’t a weak link on this album, but I’d definitely single out the slower, monstrously grinding “Rocket Symphony”, which feels kind of like being run over by a steamroller but in a strangely enjoyable way; while at the other extreme, the exhilarating headlong assault of “Envy the Dead” proves that Dead Awaken have not forgotten the debt that death metal owes to classic thrash. If this album has a flaw it’s that there’s only thirty five minutes of it, because frankly, I could’ve listened to a lot more of this. Highly recommended.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) Interview by http://www.wintertorment.com

Image

By Patrick

Here is a new interview with sweden's Septekh the band recently released it's second Mcd/E.P through the mighty Abyss rec. "Apollian Eyes". defintly worth your money and time if you enjoy extreme death/black/thrash with some punkish influence.
enjoy the interview and thanks as always to everyone who takes the time to read the zine!!
regards, patrick

Interview with Staffan Perrson drummer for Septekh done by Patrick

1.Metal hails Staffan! how is your weekend been going? Please introduce yourself to the readers.

Hail hail my friend! It´s been going pretty good so far. We had a gathering with the band last night and managed to awaken an old beast of a song so I am in a quite good mood, for the moment at least! I also saw some some production photos from our video for Burn It To The Ground and let´s just say that it made me excited (I almost lost my mind is a more correct description). The metal world has something to look forward to with that one.

2.When did you first get into metal?Who were some of the early bands you listened to? Who are some of your current favorite bands?

Ohh lets see... (Warning: The Story of my life follows) Like a lot of kids I listened to pretty much everything. The first band that´s close to metal that I ever owned records by must have been Europe haha! (and I guess the Swedish artist Magnus Uggla was a little bit metal in spirit at least) Then I heard Metallica and other 80´s bands. From there on things went crazy pretty fast. I had older friends who had gotten hold of records by more "extreme" acts. So soon I had tapes with songs by various death metal bands. I did not know who the bands were, I just liked the whole thing. There was this feeling that you had discovered something secret and dangerous. And then the Second wave of black metal happened. And with that came a new level; music was like magic. Being so young and hearing all of these Norwegian bands was such an amazing experience and it made a huge impression on me. So my metal journey made a jump fast forward in a way. Some of the (metal) bands That are very close to my heart from my early years are Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal etc. Later I actually found out that one of my favorite tunes on one of my old mix tapes was a track by Entombed (can't remember which one now though). So in a weird way that was a highpoint for me. When you did not know anything about the bands and all of them had an identity of their own. Truly magical years.
When it comes to metal today I don't know really. I still like a lot of the same bands I used to like. Aura Noir is a band that is truly excellent. Most of the new stuff that I listen to is not metal though..

3.When did you and the other members of Septekh first meet? Was long after that you all decided to
start up Septekh? How did uoi all come up with the name of the band?Does it have a special meaning?

We met through the formation of the band. I did not know any of the others before the first rehearsal. We got in contact through a mutual friend. The name was found in an old (not completely p.c.) book that belonged to and old relative to one of the band members. It has several meanings but one of the best things about it is that there are no other bands with this exact name. That is quite a feat in these days.

4.What is the "current" line-up of the band? For the readers who have never heard Septekh's music
how would you best describe it?

Same as always: Me on drums, David on guitar, George-Patrick on bass and Nils GRNLZ on vocals (lets call it the "classic" lineup of the band). We play some kind of groovy eclectic punky popy dirty blackened death/trash metal if you are to believe those who have heard us and voiced their opinion. All I can say is that we are all about good songs and performance.

5.Septekh recently released their new Mcd "Apollonian Eyes" through Abyss Rec. How did you all
come in contact with Dan and Abyss Rec.?

He contacted us through Myspace. So this was in the elder days of 2009.

6.How long did it take the band to write the songs for "Apollonian Eyes"? Are you and the other
members satisfied with how everything turned out? do you have a personal favorite song? why is it
your favorite?

Can't really remember. a couple of months I think. Before we were constantly writing songs. For both this and "The Seth Avalanche" We had more songs and chose which ones to record. Considering that this was recorded in March 2010 I think it represents were the the band was at the time. Maybe not a favourite but I like Vlad Tepes a lot because it´s got a special vibe and puts you in a certain mood when listening to it. The epic nature of the song also makes it very cool to play live!

7.How has the response been from the press and the fans so far?

Very positive thus far which is nice!

8.Does the band get to play live very often or do you all prefer to work in the studio only?Who are
some bands Septekh has shared the stage with?

Not as often as we like atm!!! We are always out for a stage to destroy. I love to be in the studio (most of times anyway, hehe) as well but the stage is where a band should shine the most. Music is a living thing. At least for us.

9.What have been some of your most memorable shows?Anything crazy/insane ever happen at one of
your shows? If you could set up a "dream" show/tour who are some bands{past or present} you would love to play/tour with?

Nothing too crazy. Playing a couple of songs without distortion on the guitar (not crazy just "sonically interesting"). Nils had to fight a stupid nazi at one show (he won). We did a show with a horde of zombies in the audience, that was definitely a highlight. Maybe Zeppelin, Nirvana and MJ because I never saw any of them live and now I can't?

10.I believe i read the band is currently writing songs for Septekh's debut full-length to be released
later this year. Will it be released through Abyss Rec. or have you all discussed it?How many songs do you plan to have on the new release?

It is already recorded and will contain 13 songs! It will be a very varied album and I can´t wait to get the songs out there.

11.How would you say the new music/songs you are writing are different then your previous E.P's?
Does the band/label have a release date set for the new full-length?

Listening to the material I can only say that it is more focused and tight and that I am very proud of it. There are hooks, substance and darkness all blended together with the best sound we've ever had. It's like the VIDEO I mentioned earlier; a totally new thing. There are traces of what was on the previous releases and it is all very much Septekh. But more refined this time. We want to release it this year but no contract has been signed as of yet.

12.The band comes out of the legendary swedish underground scene. So i was curious what is your
opinion of Sweden's metal underground scene today?

I don't know really. By underground I guess you mean bands that not really big or "mainstream". We still do not hang out with that many scenesters so no one of us are really up to date with what´s going on. I think there are too many bands that sound the same.Having said that, I must say that I am proud of the heritage and with this amount of active bands some must be good, right?

13.Who are some of your all-time favorite swedish metal bands? Are their any new bands you think
the readers should check out soon?

Dissection, At The Gates and Bathory. No more, no less. I think the quality that they have put out is beyond criticism and they all have timeless classics under there belts. (I guess Bathory is in a category of its own here because of the history and influence but that goes without saying)
Oh, and Trollhättans stolthet The Crown of course!

14.In your opinion what does the term "underground metal" mean to you?

Not much really. It's confusing because it had a meaning before but now it's just a label for smaller bands or acts that play some kind of retro/old school style. I guess it should mean that you do not follow the current trends of metal and do whatever you want. But there are many trends in what is usually referred to as the underground as well.

15.Coming back to the band for a moment you handle the drums for the band, when did you first start
playing drums? Are you self-taught or did take lessons when you first started out?

I think I was around 14 when I started playing more seriously. I got my first drum kit at 16 and am self taught (for the better and worse)

16.Who are some of your influences/favorite drummers?Do you play any other instruments?

When it comes to metal drummers I have to mention Fenriz, Frost and maybe Adrian Erlandsson. I also like the ferocious and delicate drumming of Jimmy Chamberlin a lot. There are so many great drummers out there to get inspired by and cherry pick things from! I also play guitar and love to play bass!
Recently I have also found a new musical love in the harmonica! The urge to play it is strongest when under influence.

17.Well Staffan we have reached the end of the interview.Thank you for taking the time to fill this out do you have any final comments for the readers?

Thank you! Prepare for the full length album and please keep an eye out for our VIDEO for Burn It To The Ground. It´s coming soon and will be very epic. IT WILL BE THE THRILLER OF METAL VIDEOS!!! So keep the popcorns ready!

Be sure to order your copy of SEPTEKH'S New Mcd "Apollian Eyes" from Abyss Rec. today!!

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By Beowolf Productions

BANE is a Black / Death Metal band hailing from Serbia. The band was formed back in 2006 when Branislav decided to head out on his own into the underground Metal scene. The band was just one member and although much music was created nothing really progressed until around 2009 when other members joined the band. This eventually led to the bands first full length "CHAOS, DARKNESS & EMPTINESS". After a few more EPs & Split releases we come to 2012 and the
release of the bands second full length "THE ACAUSAL FIRE". This new releases sees the bands progression tremendously. They play a strong mixture of Black Metal merged with brutal Death Metal music. The Black Metal influences pull from both new and old school styles. There is a fast some what spastic Black Metal from the genres early days mixed with some more melodic and atmospheric styles of today. Then the Death Metal elements come into play with fast paced aggressive and brutal Death Metal. This reminded me of a some what mixture of 90's American Death Metal (Florida & Mid West) mixed with early 2000's European Death Metal styles. The vocals also blend the two genres together with some low ended to mid ranged Death metal growls and some melodic clean Black Metal styles with some groggy and raw higher pitched Black Metal screams. These guys have been around for awhile and slowly built a strong fan base. With one listen to "THE ACAUSAL FIRE" that fans base will surely grow much larger and much quicker. This is a
perfect example of two of my favorite genres of Metal merging perfectly. From what I read the band is currently on hold as Branislav has relocated from Serbia to Canada. He will try to resurrect BANE with new musicians. Get this one, especially cause it may be the last material (hopefully not) we get from this amazing band!

NONEXIST (Sweden) Interview by http://www.extreminal.com

Image

By Battlepig

Who is NONEXIST anyway?

Howdy! It's me - Johan Reinholdz - on guitar and Johan Liiva on vocals. In the studio we're doing the band as a duo and then live we have Linus Abrahamson from my other band Andromeda on bass, Johan Aldgård on guitar and Joakim Strandberg-Nilsson on drums. Both Johan Aldgård and Joakim play in the band Faithful Darkness.

Why did you chose this band name in particular?

I thought it sounded very metal and it was original! I studied philosophy at the university at the time and got the idea of the "nonexist" and "deceptive god" - Deus Deceptor - the title of our first album - from French philosopher René Descartes who wrote about some weird, dark shit.

I find it difficult to describe your music. How would you name your music style?

Good! Then we must be doing something right I think! It's a brutal yet melodic mix of death- and thrashmetal combined with some hints of black- and heavymetal plus some gothrock influences thrown in!

Your last album “From My Cold Dead Hands“ was published in 2012. On your Facebook site you can read that you already work on new material. Can you already tell us something about it?

Yes, we have about half of the third album written. The music anyway, the lyrics are lagging behind a bit so far. Well, there's gonna be more deathmetal influences on this one compared to "FMCDH" which leaned more towards thrash I think. A lot of blastbeats, some really melodic stuff and some surprises too! Stay tuned folks!

Are you in contact with other musicians / bands in Sweden or do you go your own way?

Not many no. Some local dudes though.

Do you have actually any role models?

I can only speak for myself and those would be Charles Bukowski, David Lynch and George Carlin.

How important are your fans for you?

Very! Very important indeed! It's a nice feeling to realise that after ten years or so since the previous album "Deus Deceptor" people still care about our music and have been longing for a second album. We take the time to answer every fan who writes to us.

Where do you see the band in five years?

I don't really like to make such plans in general, I think the whole charm of living is not knowing what is gonna happen. But anyway - I'd like to see us touring regurlary and making interesing albums where the music continues to evolve.

Will we see you soon live onstage?

Soon I hope! No definite plans at the moment though, unfortunately! We're building the band up again after almost ten years of being inactive. We have to pay our dues again, that's for sure!

Any last word to your fans you want to add:

Yes! - If you're an old fan from the first album - thanks for sticking by us all these years! And to all others: check out our new album "From My Cold Dead Hands". If you like metal the brutal, heavy way you won't be disappointed! Thanks for the interview and support! Bye!

Many thanks for the interview and all the best for the future!!!

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By Beowolf Productions

DAEMONICUS is a Swedish Death Metal band that was spawned back in 2006. The band, like many bands has gone through some line up changes and musical changes. "DEADWORK" is the bands second full length release to date, which came out in late 2012. The band has evolved a little over the years perfecting their style of Death Metal music. You can hear a strong Swedish Death Metal influence, since this is their home country. They have a solid blend of brutal old school
Death with melodic new school Death Metal. Their music is ultra fast and blasting at times and them slows down slightly for the more mellow and flowing dramatic parts. I really like the way these two styles were mixed because it helps them stand out amongst the many bands in their genre. The music almost reminded me of a blend of old IN FLAMES with new IN FLAMES added in touches of CHILDREN OF BODOM & ENTOMBED. There are some passages in their music that are more atmospheric and orchestrated that have a heavy Black Metal vibe to them as well. The vocals of Stefan Hagstrom are done in a mid ranged Death Metal growl style that goes from aggressive to more melodic lower end Death growls. This is definitely a must for any fan of the Swedish Death Metal scene or any of the other Nordic countries. A great release from start to finish! A perfect representation of the Swedish Death Metal scene!!!

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By Beowolf Productions

It seems like Sweden is having another big resurgence of bands emerging from the area and ERUPTED is one of those bands. These guys started back in 2010 after three of the members from the band BEYOND HELL decided to start fresh. These guys play a mixture of old school brutal Death Metal with some new school Progressive Death Metal touches. "IN THE GRIP OF CHAOS" is the bands first full length release. Some of the songs on this album did appear on the bands demo releases "FACES OF DEATH". The music is done in a raw aggressive almost American Mid West style of Death Metal that was pretty dominate in the mid to late 90's. The music itself is crunchy, gritty and pure Death Metal that reminds me of early JUNGLE ROT, CORPSE VOMIT & TON. I was a little surprised, since these guys hail from Sweden. There are some slight touches of Thrash Metal present, but only in some of the grooved out guitar arrangements. Daniel Ocic Sundberg's vocals are done in low ended thick and groggy Death Metal style, some what in the vein of old
FLESHGRIND & SCATTERED REMNANTS. If your an older Death Metal fan who has been in the scene for awhile like myself, then your gonna love these guys, cause they take you back to the early days of Death Metal. One killer release that brings back a lot of memories of early Death Metal and doing a lot of tape trading with underground bands. Check these guys out and hopefully they will have some new material out soon, cause I am anxiously waiting!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By Beowolf Productions

THE GARDNERZ is a Death / Doom Metal band hailing from Sweden. These guys started back in 2008 and have released two albums to date. "IT ALL FADES" is the following up to their "THE SYSTEM OF NATURE" which came out back in 2011. These guys base their sound in the Death Metal genre, but they do have some heavy Doom Metal influences all through out their music. The music is really low ended and mid ranged paced Death Metal. I really dig the heavy grooved out sound they have that is heavily drowned in Doom Metal. The guitar work at times does have a bit of
Thrash Metal styles, especially in the crisper and cleaner guitar arrangements. They have a thick Sludge Metal sound to the guitars as well. I am a big fan of Sludge Metal, especially when it is mixed with crushing Death Metal, so I was really digging these guys a lot. The vocals are done in a thick throaty and groggy Death Metal growl style, but in a slower more drawn out style, which is where the heavy Doom Metal comes in again. It's as if you were to merge together CROWBAR with any Southern Death Metal band from the 90's. This is only a short release, but it is a very powerful one at that. If you like your Death Metal infused with some Doom Metal, then your gonna love THE GARDNERZ! They do a killer cover of DARKTHRONE's "Transilvanian Hunger" too!

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.beowolfproductions.com

Image

By Beowolf Productions

THE GATES OF SLUMBER is a Doom Metal band hailing from Indiana. The band has been playing their style of Doom since 1998. Their music is old school Doom Metal with some Sludge & Death Metal influences through out. They have a very old school style of Doom Metal that they play. This is a reissue of the bands same release back in 2004 originally put out by FINAL CHAPTER RECORDS. There are a lot of thick slow grooved out arrangements that constantly bring BLACK SABBATH to mind along with some early CROWBAR. Every Metal fan out there, especially
Doom Metal fans, love BLACK SABBATH and their gonna love THE GATES OF SLUMBER too. The music tends to be a little slower and more dragging then BLACK SABBATH at times. The music reminds more of the bands SLEEP mixed with CLAMFIGHT in the faster parts. I loved the twists and turns that the music takes along the way with you never knowing where it's going next. The vocals of Karl Simon are done in a mid ranged, mellow drawn out Sludge style. This is where I hear more of the CROWBAR type influences with a 70's Stoner Metal vibe. I am very picky when it
comes to my Doom / Sludge / Stoner Metal bands and THE GATES OF SLUMBER are right at the top of my list of favorite bands of this style. Check them out, cause your gonna find yourself grooving out to them, even if your not into this style of music!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://zombieritualzine.wordpress.com

Image

By Victor Varas

This band found the balance between aggressive death metal, brutality and technical skills. Guitars are extremely heavy and sharp, as well as the lines which denote a very professional and honest work behind rehearsal room. This band also features one of the crudest and thick voices I’ve heard this year. If you ask me, this album is a red piece of destructive death metal forged in brutality and solid guitar riffs, and seems like the founders know very well the business since they used to play in two death metal bands in late 80’s.Unfortunately, I’ve heard this formula so many times that I can’t say it’s a very original stuff. This trio has huge musical skills and the roots on ancient death metal are visible in tracks like “Rocket Symphony” which is a slow song with crushing guitar riffs. All in all, this is a great First Full Album, and it would turn your speakers into pieces. But, as aforementioned, the genre has been explored in many horizons, and I can’t say that this is something that will reach a higher position in case they record the next album in the same line. Anyway, you can buy it and the last word will be yours.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by ISK

Image

By Arnel Šaric Sharan

The point at which history begins U.S. Radiation Sickness left behind humanity, somewhere in the second half of the eighties. The band despite many problems more or less successfully to the radio in 1992. when they stopped with active functioning, leaving at the behest of demo and EP recordings. 2010th The formed were due to a concert, and in fact is one gig marked the continuation of a career of one of America's finest underground bands for which you have never heard.

Last year, saw the light of day is the first album the band ever, "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" which features new songs, as well as all material from EP release "The Other Me - A Journey Into Insanity" out in 1990. year.

Radiation Sickness playing metal. Neither more nor less than a skinny, falican, very metal, metal on modern productions, metal with songs you love to listen to, metal with songs whose lyrics Tabir and rave. If you want more detail classify this album, you'll find it included as a category of death metal / crossover thrash album, but the sound when being played, no music is not divided into genres. Niko. So, back to the fact that this metal. What was kind and will never be enough.

Production is also a matter of another time, dirty, mottled, kasetaški and amateurish, but in line with the entire band playing more than great.

"Reflections of a psychotic Past" is a monument of half-dead brilliant American metal scene of the eighties. Today's generation of younger and older who want plastic will not see anything in this album. But if you like your metal in the original, underground form, this recommendation is worth gold. You get me a beer.

ANGIST (Iceland) "Circle ofSuffering" CD EP review by http://destructive-music.com

Image

By LUKE HAYHURST

Iceland, a country of less than four hundred thousand people has an ever growing extreme Metal scene featuring some truly talented bands.

One of the leading lights coming out of Iceland are Death Metal four piece ANGIST who are gaining respect at a rapid pace and have been included on this years Desertfest, more usually a Doom like affair! 2011 saw the band self release a follow up to their initial demo in the form of a five track EP going by the name of ‘Circle of Suffering’!

What Angist offer up within these five songs is a pinch of blackened atmosphere, some nicely worked in audio samples from nightmare like nursery rhymes and at one point what sounds like whale music played backwards (Hail Satan!!) as well as a smattering of Black Metal influence all solidly wrapped in an ocean of despair, blistering old school Death Metal and truly blackened riffs. For the most part this EP batters away relentlessly with gripping furious riffs, savage drumming played in the old school way and roaring vocals!

At other times though Angist brings right back down to earth with some slower intervals of passionate and more melodic chaos! Don’t be fooled though this barrage never stops, it merely contorts and twists shape as the band move steadily forward! This is no happy tale that Angist are spinning, for ‘Circle of Suffering’ by it’s very name denotes stories of destructive behaviour born out of frustration and anger and the bands lyrical content would seem to back this up! What the band have done is tap into the degradation and misery that is suffered by the many world wide on a daily basis and channeled all of that rage, aggression and negative thought into five tracks of unstoppable bleak Death Metal! This is the type of Death Metal I want to hear when I put on my stereo…

From the frozen North, the far reaches of the world comes a destructive force of nihilistic intent! Angist are here!

Rating: 8.5/10

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://thegrimtower.blogspot.com

Image

By Eric May

Fuck yeah. That's all I have to say about his one. (Well, not all I have to say about this one, but you get my point.) Septekh has come out with another fucking great death/thrash EP, but I'm still waiting for that LP release that's going to wipe the floor with 9/10 of the death/thrash scene, of that I'm completely sure. Not only do these guys have the oddest fucking image I've seen in metal, (get a look at their vocalist's awesome beard and three-piece suit) but they absolutely fucking kill with each and every one of these three songs. With the harshness of black metal and some unconventional riffing, not to mention drums that sound like they're on fire half the time; these guys could be one of those bands that everyone starts talking about in record time.

Seriously, by the time we got to "Cursing The Skies 3:18" I was fucking floored. That means I already enjoyed the bizarre lyrics (but they're fucking unique) and "we don't give a fuck" style thrash of title track "Apollonian Eyes 3:48", the no holds barred sensibilities of "Burn It To The Ground 3:09" which needs no explanation and the closer, "Vlad Tepes 5:45" which is bursting through the roof with promise. The black metal influenced grooves of this oddly interesting song (I have no idea who they're referring to, but they want you to know that Vlad Tepes was their bitch.) Damn, what a fucking song.

If this guys come out with a full length next year, the name Septekh might very well be on damn near every tongue in the metal community. It is bands like this, that no one ever expects and do their own thing; that become noticed.

God I fucking love this.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.daily-rock.com

Image

By Thomas Bonnicel

Still a relatively young Swedish group, which gives the revival of old-school swedish death metal with the Boss pedals thoroughly and all the fuss! Yes, but once will not hurt, Swedes provide. For their second album, the guys Daemonicus play the card of non-originality, keeping quality. It is income fifteen years ago and it seems to listen to unreleased Dismember or Entombed. The titles are well built and fit-in, the singer is surly and wish to try a few phrases worthy of Belphegor and small passages with heavier or more melodic Bolt Thrower to improve all Evocation tab. An album that does not invent much, but who listens with pleasure! With groups like Daemonicus or Tormented, the succession is assured!

Rating: 3/4

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By George "Kelenmar" Vassiliadis

Mildly moderate Death 'n' Roll (and good) from Finland. The only real point of course Death every so are the growling vocals and music nothing else. Otherwise, tsalapatontas in the footsteps of 'Wolverine Blues', the 'Rock' n 'Rott' is a weird and totally simplistic, almost minimalist, amalgam of Metallica, Motorhead, AC / DC, Guns 'n' Roses, Clutch and Entombed with special orientation in most Southern paths while the pieces to have a certain aesthetic Horror not perceived both very musical but (although ultimately quite funny and aptly) using different samples and corresponding lyrics. Also two out of three pieces have not even solo and evil is that what they have is very good ... so I really do not know what I was thinking. Intensity generally minimal as the pieces are not only purely Blues - Southern phase (and not at its best), with a little Metal coating, but most are loose, mid-tempo. Still have written a heap of good heavy riffares here. There are also exceptions to point as in bit parts well enough 'For Better For Worse' and 'Take a Whiskey', or perhaps in the best disc completely Motorhead 'Dead End'. However, this does not cease to be, although the debut of the band and the other in the final, the band manages to sound just like so of course leaving room for more vivid, homogeneous compositions. So anyone who wants to hear something totally simple and pleasant and withstands heavy vocals every so often we rush to check.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://www.undergrind.net

Image

By Discord

Abyss Records signed Alan West’s new band South Wicked. He played with Obituary and Six Feet Under. and can you ever hear that on Death’s Crown!

This debut release is nothing less than Haunted all over again (not forgetting his days in Obituary). This was the debut release that Six Feet Under came out with in 1995. It’s really astounding to hear the similarities.

The old school Death Metal style is great to bang you head to, especially with those grooving riffs and heavy sound. The songs chug along quite nicely with speedier parts sparsely scattered throughout the album.

When it comes to the vocal style and sound, I have to refer back to Six Feet Under again. It really isn’t too different. Luckily for South Wicked it’s all not bothersome.

Death’s Crown simply is a sequel to Haunted, and a good one at that.
