Maybe it's because of my age that I think that In The Nightside Eclipse is so goddamn awesome. I mean, I heard the Emperor/Enslaved split before the album was released, and I remember quite clearly desperately waiting (and searching) for when it would come out out so I could immediately buy it. The split was a brilliant introduction to Emperor, due to the scuzzy, organic and utterly other-worldly atmosphere and imagery it conjured, so when word of a full length was out, well, wasn't that going to be something else.

Listening to it now, almost twenty years later, and I still have the cd I bought back then, I believe it still holds up, and is my favourite, even though Anthems... does come close. The swirling, chaotic cosmic disorder that that album has in spades is a truly heady experience, and a damn cold one too. Tracks like Towards the Pantheon, The Majesty of the Night Sky, and the fucking epic closer Inno A Satana as just some examples, will still raise the hairs on my neck, with their powerful grace and mesmirising song craft.

Cheers for the help guys. I decided on Led Zeppelin IV and Machine Head, so I'll give those a listen.

Get the Led Zeppelin II instead. It's their best.

Why not start from the beginning with both bands? Led Zep carved out a nice progression with their early records, becoming increasingly experimental as time went on. As for Deep Purple, their early records were psychedelic, and they only started playing real rock and metal with In Rock, which is where Ian Gillan joined. If I were you, I'd start from the beginning with both bands, you'll have more of an appreciation for them if you follow them from the beginning.

So since coming back, I've been bugging my old job to put me back on the schedule. Today I get a message from one of the other drivers saying I'm on the schedule now, but they gave me precisely zero shifts for my first week. Nice job, smartasses :annoyed:

Anyone a fan of Streetlight Manifesto? Their new album leaked and it's everything I expected and more. I gotta give it more time, but I think it's shaping up to be their best effort yet.

I saw them live last year after never really sampling them before and it was an experience. I was surprised to see a ton of moshpits.

Big fan of ska (all the waves). I haven't seen Streetlight live but I have seen Reel Big Fish and a few others. They were probably my first introduction to ska almost 8 years ago. And very soon I traversed back chronologically and discovered gems like Operation Ivy and Stza's wonderful creations (Choking Victim & Leftover Crack). Ska gigs are immensely fun if you're open minded about those sort of things.

Thanks for the heads up Decimator, I'll check out their new album.

As for the wanking teacher, well, he's a contract teacher, and at his age, it probably means he was fired from a full time position for doing something wrong before. He'll probably just relocate to another province and continue teaching. South Korea is a fucked up place because of the sexist culture (and many other things), Korean men can do no wrong.

See, I was warned against taking teaching jobs in South Korea. But now it's kinda tempting; being able to beat students and then jerk off only to be able to find work in another area? That's the kind of job security you don't often find in the modern world.

I think I listened to Led Zep I so much that I can't judge it objectively anymore. My favorite is II though. III is fun. IV is kinda overrated because of Stairway To Hype and I don't listen to it much.

Thank God, I'm not the only person that thinks that Stairway To Heaven is one of the most overrated songs ever.

I spent two years of my life with my mate playing that on guitar non-stop and having a go at me for getting fucking sick of it.

Just saw Sabbath, and it blew me away. Almost all classic tunes, and the sound was so loud and heavy. Into the Void was crushing.

It's a great song but yeah, it's overplayed just like Smoke on the Water or Paranoid.

BSS: check out Physical Graffiti, awesome double album and don't forget to check Presence too.

Stairway might be a great song but I could go the rest of my life without hearing and not miss it for a second.

I like Stairway To Heaven. It's extremely cheesy, but it's a good song. The first time I remember hearing it was when I was 13-14. The song wasn't played much in the radio here when I grew up; of course it's an enormous part of pop culture, but those bands only really come up to kids when they start exploring music by themselves.

I wonder exactly how much of their music is shamelessly stolen from classic blues music and how much I should care.

Certainly some stuff on their first two records. ALso, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave YOu" was, I think, written by an old fellow Yardbirds member (can't remember which one) that Jimmy Page...forgot to credit or some such. Ah well, I don't really give a damn, and after over forty years, I don't really think anybody else should, either.

No love for Houses of the Holy? That's a great album too. The first one is excellent, raw and heavy blues rock ...every song is something you'll have heard before but it's so good at what it does that I end up listening to it quite a lot. II I don't play much at all...III and iV have some absolutely stellar moments and Physical Graffiti is a real landmark of creativity for the band, which they probably never topped.

I saw Killing Joke last night and it was phenomenal. Probably one of the loudest shows I've ever attended, too. The sound was absolutely massive, and I was completely in a trance during the whole experience, when I wasn't jumping around like a maniac, anyway. Unfortunately Jazz Coleman's voice was kind of giving out during the set...he was rather apologetic, and did his damnedest, and they still played for a good hour. SO glad I went...

Throw me in with Abom. "No Quarter" is where it's at.

It always weirds me out to see people accuse Led Zep of "stealing" from blues artists. If you take a gander at the liner notes you will see that the original songwriters are always given credit.

That is easily in the top five fruitiest band names I've ever heard.

Someone should start a band with a really fruity band name like that and dress like hipsters and call yourselves "black metal/shoegaze" but then just sound like Archgoat.

Fucking hipsters :oh shit:
Anyways, I don't really care that Zeppelin stole a bunch of shit (I think Babe I'm Gonna Leave You was originally a Joan Baez song) I don't care for the band all that much. They have about 5 songs that are really awesome, and the rest does nothing for me.

This is even better if, like me, you haven't seen the actual trailer. And very confusing.

I've... never actually heard "Stairway to Heaven". In fact the only Zeppelin I'm familiar with is the song "Kashmir". Such is life under the rock.

More importantly, Genocide (Japan) is awesome, and anyone who hasn't heard them yet should give their (sole) album Black Sanctuary a shot. Great old school heavy/power metal with a kickass vocalist who really reminds of King Diamond.

For anyone who rides a bike on the street in suburbia:

1) Can you please explain to me why riding on the street is preferable to riding on the sidewalk? The sidewalk is usually pedestrian-free and is better lit, cleaner and better maintained with fewer potholes, etc. so seems like a better alternative to riding in the actual street.

2) Fuck you.

not too sure how it works in the US, but in a lot of countries it's illegal to ride a bike on the FOOTPATH. thumbs down to bike riders who pick and choose where they ride, but where there are no dedicated bike lanes they should be on the road.

It is perfectly legal to ride on the sidewalk in my county, with the except of a couple of areas.
