MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://www.nocleansinging.com

Image

By Islander

I don’t know any actual zombies, reanimated corpses, or other manifestations of the walking dead. Not personally. But I can imagine that when they congregate among themselves to get shit-faced and party like the fucking ghouls they are, they’re crankin’ the new album by Maax.
I’ve been fumbling around trying to decide on a genre label for this music. As I listened to the first track, “Coldest Steel”, I was thinking “death ‘n’ roll”. But as I moved deeper into the grisly vomit-rocket of this album, that didn’t seem to fit. Later, I thought about “thrash ‘n’ roll”, because most of the songs do sound like a breed of thrash, but “thrash ‘n’ roll” really doesn’t capture the gory filth that pervades the music.
“Slut-fucking black thrash ”n’ roll”? I suppose that could work. “Alcoholic heavy metal hellfire”? Yeah, that has possibilities. “Entombed meet Motorhead, get blasted, and then dress up in the freshly flayed skin of the just dead and start jamming”? That’s getting closer. But I finally decided that the band itself nailed the description in the title of the sixth track: “Rot and Roll”.
Yes, there’s plenty of filth on Unholy Rock N Roll — distorted, buzzsaw guitars spinning with greedy voraciousness; blasting rock drum rolls and gut-busting bass lines; headbang-worthy hammer-riffs; feverish guitar solos that erupt like a rampant viral outbreak; and gruesome vocals that sound like they’re being vomited up from someplace far lower than the stomach. Put it all together and you get a kind of diseased thrash without the annoying classic-thrash vocals. In other words, sweetness!
As nasty as all the songs are, a big part of what makes this album such a kick to hear is the variety within it. There’s definitely a healthy dose of putrifying party-thrash (“Maax” is a good example), but in the latter half of the album, the music takes a pronounced turn toward black metal. “Overthrone” is a corpse-grinding motherfucker of BM malevolence, and “Black Thrash Em All” lives up to its name: thrash ‘em into mincemeat and let Satan sort ‘em out. And “Deliverer” is as grim and serious as a heart attack. starting as a death ‘n’ roll crusher and then becoming thoroughly charred.
The only slow song on the album is “Purge of Depravity”, but don’t worry: Even that song is just as disturbed as everything else. It sounds like the rambling mantra of a homeless person, accompanied by unhinged guitar noise.
Maax (pronounced “May-axe”) is from Indiana, and Unholy Rock N Roll is their second album. It’s out now and available in digi-CD format from Abyss Records or via digital download from iTunes and Amazon mp3. Link to the band’s Facebook page can be found below.
If you have any zombie friends you’re planning to visit, this album would make a nice housewarming gift.

HYPERBOREAN (Sweden) "The Spirit of Warfare" CD review by http://www.apochs.net

Image

By apochs

Sweden's Hyperborean formed back in 2000 as a Melodic Black Metal band. As the years went by, the band issued three demo recordings, as well as submitted a track to the compilation CD Hordes of Darkness. The last demo to be recorded was Prey, which was issued by the band back in 2005. Six years later, the band finds themselves signed to Abyss Records to release their debut full-length recording, The Spirit of War. Given the dramatic pause in material from the band over that time, one can't help but wonder if Hyperborean had utilized the time wisely to craft a superb full-length album or not.

One of the biggest lures to Hyperborean is the fact that the group performs rather long songs. While only seven tracks, the whole release makes up about forty seven minutes of music, which is quite impressive, especially if the material here can be as engaging as one would hope from a Melodic Black Metal act. While the music does slightly suffer from the group being a simple three piece and trying to incorporate some melody without a rhythm guitarist to keep the music rich, the band does manage to deliver. "Weapon Making" is the second track in, and it's the song that will really take hold of the listener, where as "Channlingt he Spirit of Warfare" is a good song, it just sounds a little more hollow at times. "Weapon Making" takes on a more traditional Black Metal foundation with some simpler melodic elements added into the chords that progress the music without leaving open sections that feel like the bass isn't loud enough to fill in for a missing rhythm guitarist who should be present to make the music sound richer and full. This song also has some keyboards added in throughout, and it just makes for a nice addition as it feeds off the slower, more melancholic, and often gothic tones and atmospheres of the recording well. The song does pick up the pace momentarily, which makes the song sound a little more chaotic, happening on more then one occassion, and even when it's not moving fast, "Weapon Making" will have your head bobbing along to the catchy rhythm and melodic melancholy-laced hooks.

Most of the songs on here are just a little over seven minutes, or shorter. "Killing Grounds" winds up being the shortest track off the album, clocking in at four minutes and twenty two seconds. However, "The Last Stand of Leoniads and the Battle of Thermopylae" is just a few seconds shy of the ten minute mark. This song is also one of the more consistent faster tracks on the recording, and not just a slower pace with some spastic faster moments thrown in, though when the slower passages of the track hit, they become rather dramatic and sound very epic in a fluid manner. Of course this song also falls prey to the melodic guitars without rhythm backing, but most of these are bridges between the more epic passages. There are more keyboards added to this song as well, which also helps with the more dramatic vibe of the music, making it richer and far more serious without going too over-the-top with the guitars, and it really does help out the more hollow moments of the recording, leading to a song that doesn't just sound good but have no real impact, such as the slower paced "Viper" which was good for a Melodic Black Metal track, but it fell prey to all the pitfalls mentioned above, as well as just came off a little more bland then what it should have been. But, for as well done and engaging as this song is, the shorter tracks show promise too, though don't really compare to the atmosphere the longer tracks have.

"A New Sun Rises" is a great song, and really seems to capture the more melancholic and slower paced atmosphere of the earlier tracks "Channeling the Spirit of Warfare" and "Weapon Making". The length itself allows the band to give it a depth that is just as strong and deep as those tracks, and the atmosphere really builds throughout the entire song. "Killing Grounds, however, seems to suffer from the shorter track length. As mentioned, this is the shortest song on the recording, and because of that the band seems to come off more rushed with the track, using a faster pace to create a song that sounds sinister from start to finish and really utilizes the keyboards nicely to fill in behind the lead guitar and it's more melodic undertakings. However, the song lacks the kind of substance the other songs had, which was the melancholic vibe, sinister sound, and a generally deep composition in all aspects of the music, lyrics and even vocals. It's not a bad song, but it doesn't really offer much substantial material to keep the listener entertained past a few spins with that track, especially when "The Sick Man of Europe" kicks in with that deathly sound you hear on many tracks, but the keyboards and gutteral approach accompanying the rhaspier Black Metal wails really help out the album in a very minimalist form that gives it an additional epic vibe from how the band manages to musically emote the sensations that they seem to easily portray in their music. The only gripe is that the song feels like it ends while there is more to it, as if the fade out effect utilized on the recording had been a little premature.

Other then that, The Spirit of Warfare is a well composed album without any real faults. The lack of a rhythm guitarist hurts, and after "Channeling the Spirit of Warfare", the band seems to utilize the keyboards more to make the melodic lead guitar sound richer, as if not trying to tackle melodic hooks by himself. Had the band used this concept a little more, there's no doubt the material om The Spirit of Warfare would have definitely made a bigger impact on the listener then it does. The production quality on the release is a little more raw, and at times it works in it's favor, but at time, like with the hollow sound behind the melodic lead guitars, it just kind of hurts the album by making the music sound a little weaker, not necessarily have that edge or bite to it to keep the listener hooked, but luckily the music is often well done enough that it manages to keep the listener content throughout the experience despite that.

As far as Melodic Black Metal acts go, sure, there are some better acts out there, but Hyperborean is definitely a band to keep your eyes on. The music performed is typically slower and a little simpler, which gives way to more epic-sounding material. With the right production and mastering qualities, the band can definitely pull off a memorable album that would far surpass this one. The Spirit of Warfare is still a strong album in it's own right, having melancholic epic-like songs that vary in speed, giving off accompanying atmospheres and emotions that will lead this release to find the listener going back for some repeat spins for a good while, even on a rainy day. What more could you really ask for then a solid Melodic Black Metal effort that will often having you headbanging to the rhythm and hooks that drive the music of Hyperborean? More then likely not much else...Not much else at all...

Overall Score: 8.5/10

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://www.slugmag.com

Image

By Bryer Wharton

Entrench = Sodom + Death Angel (early) + Nuclear Assault + Destruction (early)
Don your denim patch-plastered jacket, bust out your bullet belt and revel in what may be the least talked-about but best damn thrash record your ears will be bombarded with on Entrench’s debut album, Inevitable Decay. After six years of demos, this Swedish trio of mad thrashers are here to beat your ass the way thrash metal should. The problem with many of the modern thrash acts pushing out retro material these days, aside from regurgitated riffs and lack of the real thrash angst, is their modern production. Entrench not only nail the classic production of albums from the ’83 to ’85 era, they ooze old-school attitude like a pus-ridden sore on a hardworking thrash guitar player’s finger. Stylistically, the band does a good job of crossing over the core of their sound, which is early European thrash with some doses of American rawness. It isn’t just riffs you’re going to remember from Inevitable Decay; the tracks stand hard and fast with new classics. “Debt of Sorrow” is filled with mosh-pit fervor and a core swirling, dizzyingly fast thrash riff with a throat-scraper of a vocal delivery, and “Crossing the River,” starts with speedy punches and rounds into some brutal thrash-groove breakdowns. All this is plenty to get the old school and new school to wet their skintight black jeans.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://www.metalbite.com

Image

By Tom

How many times a Death Metal band starts out by putting an album out there that can compete with the best? Not many! Fetus Stench did just that with their first album and nothing will be the same again, at least for me. “Stillbirth” is relentless, extreme, and intense and I loved it from the first note.

Powerful, meaty guitar sound combined with moshpit-friendly riffing (Cannibal Corpse) carries a Death/Thrash vibe with some groove and occasional lead, double base, blast and rumble of the drums (Blood Red Throne/Aeon drummer Emil) is simply exceptional and it’s a treat in itself, clanging of the bass and gut wrenching vocals (Morbid Angel/Hate Eternal) complete the attack and level anything that is still standing.

“Stillbirth” is one of those albums that don’t need to be taken apart. Everything is clear, crisp and tight. Guitars, bass, drums and vocals all are one impossible to stop entity that is as solid as a slab of steel. One that is made to crush, one that cannot be taken apart and cannot be messed with. It is brutal, technical, punishing and unstoppable. Excellent background to an execution or soundtrack to destroying something that’s beautiful. It is like a medieval battering ram made with care and passion, full of exhausting designs and majestic in its presence, yet made with one purpose and made to do only one thing: DESTROY!

Fetus Stench is conquering the throne, and as far as I am concerned - only few can stand in their way. “Stillbirth” is one of the most complete Death Metal albums I’ve heard in a while, and if they can keep what they’re doing or maybe raise it a notch, next time I see them leading the pack and many others will have to try to keep up. It is Death Metal at its finest and I’m not just saying that.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by Extreme Underground Music Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

The Gates Of Slumber are a band from Indiana that plays a very traditional form of doom metal and this is a review of their 2004 album "The Awakening" which was re-issued by The Abyss Records during the year of 2012.

Drums are all slow to mid paced playing with no fast drumming or blast beats being present on this recording, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful sound with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording.

Rhythm guitars are all slow to mid paced traditional doom metal riffs that utilize a great amount of dark sounding melodies in the riffing, while the lead guitars are very old school sounding doom metal guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are mostly clean singing doom metal vocals with some more aggressive elements being utilized at times, while the lyrics cover Sword And Sorcery, Hate and War, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful, heavy, dark, professional and old school sound to it where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording with the songs being long and epic in length.

In my opinion The Gates Of Slumber are a very great sounding traditional doom metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Judge" "Broken On The Wheel" and "Blessed Pathway To The Celestial Kingdom". RECOMMENDED BUY.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by Variety Of Death Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Septekh are a band from Sweden that has been featured before in this zine with a musical style that I would describe as being old school death/thrash with some black metal elements and this is a review of their 2013 ep "Apollion Eyes" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being utilized at times, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that are coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast old school death/thrash riffs that utilize some black metal influences and dark sounding melodies, while the lead guitars are very old school sounding death/thrash metal guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are all death/thrash metal screams and growls that have a blackened edge to them, while the lyrics cover dark and violent themes, as for the production it has a very heavy, raw and primitive sound to it while you can s till hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Septekh and if you are a fan of this band, you should check out t his ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Burn It To The Ground" and "Vlad Tepes". RECOMMENDED BUY.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) Interview by Agathokakological Webzine

Image

By agathokakological666

1. Hello and who is this from Septekh?

Hello. This is Staffan Persson, the drummer of Septekh

2. The band formed in 2008 could you please give us a BRIEF history?

Started rehearsing late 2008. Recorded a demo during the early months of 2009. In the summer of that year Michael Jackson passed and we recorded the Seth Avalanche EP. Went on to record Apollonian Eyes in the begining of 2010 (a year after the the demo was done). Around this time we also moved our base of operations to the Dark Island south of Stockholm.

Holed up in the comfy refuge of Studio 508 we started to turn our attention to brewing and honing are song writing skills even more. This was the start of a long and perilous journey that would culminate in the recording of our full length album in the summer of 2012. Except for these milestones gigs have been played, injuries sustained and a lot more. But you can read about all that in the book...

3. Tell us about some shows and gigs you guys have done, have you played any festivals worth mentioning?

One of the more memorable recent gigs must be the one we did out at the sea on the Rock Bitch Boat last year. It was good show and the presence of members from both Grabenkämpfer STHLM and Visby made it an even more memorable occasion. It's not everyday you get to play a show with zombies trying to get and all kinds of other freaks out in the audience. Great night! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwkbtSK6NTo

4. I see you are about to release your second EP on Abyss Records, are there any plans for a full length in the near future?

Oh Yes Indeed! We recorded a full length in the summer and are at last finalizing the mix at the moment. It will contain 13 tracks and bears the fruit of what we have been working on since recording this last EP back in the spring of 2010.

5. What are your lyrical concepts, do you stick to kind of the same themes?

Yes we do. There is a thread running through most of the lyrics and they share some DNA. Having said that I think it's not what is said in the lyrics that makes them great but how it is said. Nils has has a nice way of being able to be blatantly blunt but at the same time also veer out in a more abstract and poetic way. They invite you to their own world and that is what good lyrics (and music) should do according to me.

6. Tell us about the recording of your latest album.

The EP "Apollonian Eyes" that we are releasing right now was actually recorded back in March 2010. It was recorded at same studio as "The Seth Avalanche" here in Stockholm.

For the coming full length we went to Silence Studios in the deep woods of Värmland (in utmost west of Sweden). It's a much larger studio and we where able to record all of us playing together live. A lot of great bands have recorded there and it was the perfect place for us to do the record.

7. I saw a video you guys made for the track "Shoot Them All" from your debut EP, it was interesting to say the least, can we expect something like this for the new album?

Yes you can. Well, in fact you really can't because the new video will be so awesome that it is hard for even me to grasp it. Those are some big words but we are very proud of and amazed by our latest cinematic piece and I am sure that others will be too. There will be zombies, fighting and blazes amongst other things in it. No cross dressing this time. At least not by any of the band members...

8. Who is in the line up now?

Same as always: Me on drums, David Wikström on guitar, Patrik Ström on bass and Nils Meseke on vocals. No more, no less.

9. What can people expect when the go to a Septekh show? Do you have any shows coming up that you would like to mention?

A slithering groovy sonic stampede! We play better live than on record because of the time that has passed since the recordings. Mix that with the energy of the audience and you are usually in for a quite raucous but still beautiful evening. That's what we are about; ugliness and elegance. And Mustaches and all around well groomed facial hair i guess.

10. Thanks for the interview, any closing words thoughts, information on contacting the band or where to get your merchandise.

Thank you! KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE VIDEO FOR "BURN IT TO THE GROUND" It will destroy!!! Enjoy the new EP and prepare for the full length! Merch can be found at Abyss Records store.

Please join us on http://www.facebook.com/septekh for latest updates

Thanks for support! The Plan remains alive!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by ww.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Ramon

The Swedish Dead Awaken spent five demo releases since 2002, but now it's finally time for their full length album. To you as companion to my boring job, once I get to read that the band numerous human occupations has endured, all for legitimate reasons of course, but perseverance eventually brought up here. And where is this then? Dead Awaken shows a fairly average release after a decent production and a fresh, yet aggressive approach to death metal. The vocals are a little dull compared to the rest of the music, but it is ultimately also called Swedish death metal. And you have a bit of give them. The disc will within the songs for more variety than the numbers themselves do and their textual orientation surprised even the least of all. To briefly go, this is not the beginning of something big, but you can hear that there is considerable growth is present. The atmosphere is good, the metal spirit too and all in all it is not a punishment to have to listen. But not much more than that.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) Interview by Extreme Underground Music Zine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Currently we are working on songs and arrangements for our next record. Other than that watching
the world go by, not much.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new ep and it how it differs from previous
releases?

I don't know man. It's really just kind of what we've always done. I guess people should pick up a copy
then go buy all our other releases (a few shirts and what not as well) and make up their own minds
(ahem http://www.slumberingsouls.com)

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?

Alienation and disillusion. Ambivalence. Addiction. Fear and loathing.

4. I know that the band has written some songs on Swords And Sorcery, can you tell us more about
your interest in this topic?

Jason and I both grew up with comics and fantasy/horror movies and novels. And for a long time we
did songs based on that stuff. The early days of the band had lyrics that were full of allegorical
passages. Songs like The Judge and Jury were basically about the judicial system. How fucked it is
that one person sits in judgement over another. Or the concept of a jury of your "peers". We went full
on into the Conan stuff on Suffer no Guilt. Which, lyrically is the best of out fantasy stuff. And we kind
of just kept it rolling for a few records. But it wore thin really quick, and we were starting to get
labeled as a band that just did that kind of stuff. And we didn't want that. Plus style wise we were
becoming more a straight metal band. And personally I didn't want that. I started doing this band
because I wanted to play doom metal. So after the Hymns record was gone and the band had gone
through some changes it was the chance to get back to center.

5. According to the Metal Archives page, the band was named after a sound from Cianide, what was it
that interested you about this song in order to name the band after that?

Well, what it was is I had written about 5 or 6 songs. And one stoney night I was thinking that I
needed to name this band, of which I was the solitary member. So after going through all the
possibilities. And doodling a ton of logos. I decided on The Gates of Slumber. Really, I wish it was a
deeper story.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your
stage performance?

Highlights were both of our Doom Shall Rise appearances and Roadburn fest. I don't know how to
describe our stage show. I mean it's three guys and we are all kind of big. Not a lot of running around.
I guess not unlike Motörhead. Loud and we don't move a lot.

7. Do you have any touring plans for the future?

You'll have to wait and see.

8. Recently The Abyss Records, re-issued your 2004 album, what are you thoughts on the final
product?

I'm really glad it's back in print. It was one of the best moments of my life having that come out.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of doom metal?

People seem to like it a lot. The return to form was very well received.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

Polka maybe, I don't know. Maybe Outlaw Country.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are
you listening to nowadays?

Black Sabbath.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Macramé. Tuvan throat singing. Animal Husbandry. Calling off work because of phony illnesses.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Go to http://www.slumberingsouls.com and buy a bunch of shit.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.rock-metal-essence.com

Image

By James Mezzano

Four songs from the typical impression that old-school thrash influences meet on their journey and war metal, into one inspired and energetic and listening pleasure. The training seems to live a good run of form, both technical and compositional, and this little batch of songs does not fail to reserve good moments of extreme power. Of course, less than twenty minutes drive are a bit 'just to be able to assess the full potential today reached by this project, but the path taken seems the right one, and especially the title track Apollonian Eyes never fails to amaze us with his pace and its sound full of groove and presence . boys also seem altogether definitely improved compared to the previous demo and debut EP. So if this work was composed as I think to probe the opinions in view of possible their first full-length, well, I think that the time is now ripe to address this important step record. Keep it up! POOR IN WORDS .. A good taste of what's to come . The Septekh are authors of a powerful and aggressive death metal, which never fails to fascinate the listener. Now wait for them to finish the first album.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://thrashhead.com

Image

By Rene

Jesus! I caught a whiff of Septekh not long ago and was incredibly excited to hear the complete EP; I wasn't quite sure what to expect...and that's the way it should be!

Four songs of some serious fucking badass Swedish blackened crust styled death thrash; all four songs are crushers which unleash a hurricane of debris from the strongholds of Darkthrone, Kreator and perhaps a dash of Disfear...it's undeniable Scandinavian evil here folks, it's as heavy as anything the legions of hell could bestow upon the listener with incredible riffs, smoking leads (those on "Burn It To The Ground" shred) and pounding head banging beats...both the opening track "Apollonian Eyes" as well as the last song "Vlad Tepes" are brutally fine examples of how easy it is to crack your spine to these guys' music.

The vocals are vicious yet step back from being a full bore growl, but is nonetheless a demonic bellow which accompanies the fury of the crunchy guitars with perfection! If you're looking for something which brings together the best of the Teutonic school and the Swedish Death Metal scenes with a touch of Crust thrown in, this is the album for you!

Apollonian Eyes is not for the weak, you have to be one bad motherfucker to crank this shit, it's for the hardcore and it rips!

You think you're metal as fuck? Think again bubba...Septekh is metal as fuck; you can't go wrong getting a hold of this album!

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by The Grim Tower

Image

By Eric May

Dead Awaken are a three-piece death metal band with a great deal to offer, in all actuality. When I first heard "Carnivore 3:12" I didn't expect much, but when I got to "Deutsches Afrika Corpse 3:59" and heard that intro piece, I was pretty fucking stunned. The drums are absolutely killer there, the riffs pounding, and the gravel right in you fucking face. That's a death metal song folks, there are no substitutes. Then when I got to the slower brood of "Rocket Symphony 5:16" and the death/groove nature of "Mudhell 3:35" I was convinced that Dead Awaken is a band I want to keep my eye on. There are always those bands that come out of nowhere, who nobody would really give a shit about because they didn't ever think to give them a shot, but in reality they're one of the best death metal bands you've never fucking heard.

When a band's got a good drummer, you can tell - and I really fucking like this guy's playing on the kit. He really makes the band what it is, and I'm just goddamned amazed. As far lyrics go, they can start reading off names and phone numbers and I'd fucking like it. At the end of the day, it all comes down to "man, I had a shitty day at work. I need a band that'll make me want to fucking bang my head and unwind." And that's just it. I want to go into the fridge, pull out a cold one, pop off the top on that sucker and bang my head a bit. There's many bands you can do that to, but these guys are just fucking made for it.

As far as influences go - Cannibal, Immolation, Dying Fetus, Suffocation exc. I mean, you can hear it in the music. I'm hearing a lot of Cannibal just in "Venom Of The Population 5:46" and sure I've heard that shit before, but it sounds good; so why knock it? Plus, I'll say it again - this guy REALLY KILLS on the kit.

Though it might be a couple minutes over thirty, it's something you can go back and listen to repeatedly. It's good drinking music and it's good for driving - but not both, you fucking nutcase! I'm not really sure which PR label told me to check these guys out, but thank fuck that they did. I'm more than happy to promote death metal that I'll sit down and enjoy on my own time.

Highlights: Deutsches Afrika Corpse, Rocket Symphony, Mudhell, Manic Destructive, Envy The Dead, Venom Of The Population, State Of Corrosion (9 Tracks, 34:00)

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.aquelarrezine.blogspot.com

Image

By Paul Caravasi

I'm sure a more than a few of you remember these guys and their furious Ep "The Seth Avalanche" from 2012. Well this time these sickos attack once again with Apollonian Eyes, not sure how to categorize Septekh but they play some kind of Death/Thrash metal in a chaotic way, also technical in it's own way too. Overall i'm impressed because there are times when they really come up with something interesting. Drop 'em a line if you're looking for something out of the ordinary. Visit abyss records to get a copy of this insane band. Buy or Fry!!

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by Aristocrazia Webzine

Image

By Mourning

The formation of the Serbian Bane revolves around the figure of Branislav Panic and is temporarily suspended after the transfer of the artist in Canada.
's adventure began in the mother country has so far produced a demo, an EP, a triptych of split and two albums ( "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" and "The Acasual Fire"), these are the works by which the best you can get in touch with their way of interpreting the black metal strongly inclined to live and burn for Sweden in Here is the second that I have the pleasure of writing.
's line-up that gave him life, as well as Panic in the roles of guitarist and singer, he saw inside Nokkturno on bass, Occultum Malleus of the battery and enriched the holdings of some Guests: Nocturnal (Shadowdream and Ancient Sorrow) for orchestrations, Butcher (Avenger) to support with his guitar and voice "Light The Black Flame", while the battery is in "World Of Desolation" and Patrik Carlsson (Anachronaeon and Eyecult) ready to offer its contribution in "Existence In Denial" putting the uvula and the guitar solo section.
For those unfamiliar with this reality, but loved the Scandinavian black, the meeting would probably be those identified as "pleasant". Once you open the drawer of the player and given the chance to turn on the stereo in "The Acausal Fire", you will see that high-sounding names such as Dissection (it is no coincidence that the disc closes with a cover of "Night's Blood" second track "Storm Of The Light's Bane"), Dark Funeral, Marduk, Naglfar and reality as minor as Sacramentum and Lord Belial are more than likely the stylistic references to the Slavs. It seems that in the manner which propose a mixture condensed with a production that, while outlining sounds good, does not enjoy the cleaning tank to pull out some recent evidence from large groups.
What I have to ask is: why buy a disc of this band? Personally I find it pleasant, literally go to a wedding with the atmosphere and melodic sounds that link on the scope, drawing evidence is however still masculine. It is clear that good quality proposals containing songs such as "As Chaos Arise", "Light The Black Flame" and "Existence In Denial" achieve some good centers, and the intro "Bringing Forth The Endless Dark Aeon" and the outro "Entering The Paradoxical Sphere "are able to perform their duties by providing a touch sumptuous and do not mind the cover of Jon Nödtveidt and Associates is so in their ropes be put back in style" politically correct ", making still appreciate.
However all so the "norm" that could cause those to whom these are not enough reasons not to take into account the merits in "The Acasual Fire", perhaps giving more weight to small defects such as voltage drop nell'accoppiata pieces of pre- final line of "The Truth Unleashed" and "World Of Desolation" or Branislav not always able to keep the attention with his vocal lines, are certainly deficiencies to be reported, but not so debilitating, especially with a total duration rather measured in order to avoid boredom in the long run the effect.
Bane if I play, throw it on the plate there without thinking twice and offer - as stranota - I'm sure the fans of the genre might be interested in, so if you are one those who live on black bread and Swedish you should at least try to share a bit 'of your time with "The Acasual Fire". If they are roses, bloom.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) Interview by The True Bringer Of DeathZine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Currently, we're awaiting our first copies of the album!
Doing a local release gig tomorrow(March 31st).
Then it's time to start harassing people with the album, to get out on the road.
Hopefully we'll get some good reviews.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?

It's very aggressive.
More focused than our old demo's.
Most of the songs on the album are juiced up demo songs.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?

Mostly war and it's horrors. Always been a fave topic of mine.
We will probably turn direction on our next release.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Actually, I believe it was Joakim, our former drummer who was listening to Cannibal corpse.
The name came from some of their lyrics. The name stuck in his mind, as he thought it was really cool.

5. Originally the band was called Abyssal Chaos, what was the decision behind the name change?

Good question. The name change was before I entered the band.
I remember the guys in the band (Who were really young, when I joined) thought "abyss" was the coolest word in the world.
I love the irony in that 11 years after the birth of the band, we're on Abyss records!

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Opening for Vomitory was great!
I think our performances are intense, yet laid back.
We focus on the music, which you can probably tell.
We have a lot of fun!

7. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?

Not yet. I've found that no one wil book you, until the album is out.
Frustrating.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the newer music by fans of death metal?
People seem to like our stuff.

It seems like we're automatically labelled "Old school".
How the hell do you define that?
Old school to me means bands like old Massacre, Bolt thrower, Obituary, Death, early Entombed.
I don't think we sound like any of them(Well, possibly Bolt thrower), even if that's what we grew up listening to.
But, as we're in our 40's, maybe that's what naturally comes out of us..? You tell me.
We try to make it timeless.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

Angrier. Not necessarily faster, but intense.
Some of the lyrics touch on very personal topics.
I think things will become a bit less worked out and more from the heart.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Mats, our drummer, lisens to a lot of newer style death metal, like Anaal Nathrakh, Origin, etc.
Personally, I still love some of the older stuff, like Bolt thrower. I also lean a lot towards Triptyon and Monotheist, the last Celtic Frost album. I love the evil spirit and the darkness of it.
We're both heavily into Immolation too.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

I love spending time with my family.
Hanging out with my friends, having a beer or two.
Got into alcohol late, but now I'm a whisky nerd.
I also play a lot of video games, survival horr and first person shooters.
My primary interest is still guitars and guitar gear.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Thanks for the interview!
Keep supporting Death Metal! New or old, nevermind! We need our exreme music.
Check out our album. Hope you'll like it.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.crossfire-metal.de

Image

By Joxe Schaefer

Man wearing helmet with Bismarck pimples, tails, operated flamethrower and twirls to the mustache. Before you ask, what does this mean on the Promo Shots again, one can even look at the music. Thrash standard shot, the title track is a nasty boiler Schepperer. Straighter is served with "Burn It To The Ground" the Death 'n' roll bar, and also so that the home-sound homage. And it can hold, interpret as Septekh him, but one must not bend. Verthraschte lumber units with guitars like rattling chains and ejected cartridge cases in up-tempo, and at the above-ground production. Unfortunately, no more than four projectiles landed on this output. From Järna in Stockholm this quartet has already produced a demo and two EP's to light. This time, the proponent take that sound again with an EP Vorlieb. Perhaps they create times in the near future an entire album.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Interview by the Core of Brutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

J: No. I think it's pretty easy to find on the internet. So if who ever reads this is at all interested, google.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

J: Speaking for myself, I don't think I have any particular message besides: use your own brain and some commonsense. Lot of stuff we write about is true stories, so to speak, which I like. Happenings from our present and not some nagging about past things… Well maybe we have a little about that too.. Or a lot.. But, yeah.

F: Social injustice, war, misanthropy, corruption and so on. I don't write to get a message out. It is more like a release of the pressure for myself. The lyrics reflect my thoughts when i feel i just need to stop everything i'm doing and just scream.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

J: Total jam feasts of hell. Well, they have been good. It's always nice to play, unleashing a fair share of aggression and afterwards talk to the mutilated crowd. If you go to a Entrench gig you go for the music, I don't think we're especially interesting on stage nor good looking, so just bang your head or ignoring the stumbling in front of you while getting more drunk and just listen to the thrashing notes.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

J: Oh, is this really an interesting question? Haha, right now I use an old 80s Mockingbird and a Hiwatt stack and some cables. You got to have those cables man.

F: I manhandle two Ibanez Destroyers, one 90's Dt-series and one Dt-50 from '81. Mesa Boogie MKIV amp. Victor hits an old Pearl World Series double bass set. We don't need microphones.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

J: It's not fair to just mention a few so I don't mention any. We are influenced by every band we like more or less, of course mostly death and thrash, but also a great deal of heavy/speed too… and doom, not to be forgotten! By mangling our heads with all these different vibrations from various bands I think we automatically becomes influenced. It's not like we sit down, or ever has, and say, hey lets do a song that reminds of band-x. We just write riffs, put them together, very thoughtfully and stops rearranging them when the soup taste good.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

J: I remember my first show with Entrench. I think they had like three ones before I joined? Anyway, that one sucked majorly, crowd-wise, since there were like 3 people attending, but it was fun and just a warm up for the second coming show and that one was nice. We used to practice in an old underground military base and in one of the premises, one of the big ones, they had a stage where you could arrange gigs. It was a very moody place and I remember we played very well even though Victor threw away his drum stick at one point and I guess some other minor miss happenings also did occur from our part, the string section, but in all it was a good show. We were first out and after us Degial and last In Solitude. None of us was particularly "famous" at the time, guess it was like max 50 people in the crowd including band members.

F: The first show was a disaster, we were not ready for sure i tell you, i think we even had to break in the middle of one song cause no one knew what to play, drum sticks flying everywhere, guitars off key, the session bass player did not know the songs etc. But it was a good lesson - if you don't practice for it you are going to sound like shit! The only good thing was that there were very few people attending! From what i remember the following gigs went okay in comparison.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

J: Fredrik have to answer this one since I wasn't in the band when it was formed. But I was in a death metal band before I joined Entrench which I formed and I guess why I first learned to play an instrument was because I wanted to play those tunes that I worship so much. The first song I learned by ear was Black Sabbath N.I.B. and on that road it is. I became a bass player because they always gets the girls… No seriously, I thought it was a really heavy and cool instrument and besides everyone else wanted to play the guitar so.

F: I'd just left my previous band and wanted to form a new one playing the music i was into, otherwise probably the same reason any band is formed. It's good therapy combined with an urge to express something creatively meanwhile getting drunk with your friends at the same time, could there be any better way to waste your precious time!?

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

J: Don't know. You are referring to downloading I guess? I don't think I really care, because if someone downloads our album I don't view them as music enthusiasts anyway and they wouldn't buy our album in the first place. So sure, download our stuff illegally but don't expect us to thank you, douches. On the other hand if someone downloads the album "just to check it out", because they do not wish to buy shit for their money I can't blame them. So that's why I think medias like youtube is okay. Feel free to upload our stuff so people can listen to it, I don't mind. I know myself if I hear something on the internet that I like I make sure to buy the album. If you don't? Well then you are as empty as your collection!

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

J: Yes, those we got to cuddle with backstage. No, I don't know. I like playing shows with our friends the most I think. Maybe! We traveled to a city called Trollhättan with the Death Metal band Dead Awaken who also had Jonas Stålhammar from Bombs of Hades on the bass at that show, that was a really nice trip since we all have the same lame humor and doesn't necessarily like the same bands. Since both bands only got three members each we all fit in a small bus together. Of course it's cool to play shows with bands that include members that feels a bit legendary as well, you feel like a little fanboy sitting backstage with guys like Jörgen Sandström, at least I do, I'm not cooler than that. It was also really nice when we did a show with Bombs of Hades and Usurpress, because later on Ekeroth mentioned our album in a top five list, which was really nice of him. Of course that's not why the show was great but I got really surprised and the man knows his stuff, so thanks Daniel!

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

J: First of, all this shitty core genres that have popped up lately as a fucking wrench in the already sore eye of true metal ain't metal!!! They are NOT subgenres of metal. Why they call it metal is a mystery to me. They should call it; "Extreme Pop" or "Popcore"… Or even more so; "A Load of Shit!", but I'm guessing they wouldn't go for the later, which is a shame. Talking about subgenres with bad reputation I think of styles like Symphonic metal, Folk/Viking/What ever metal and Power metal? (Yeah, the list could go on for ever, fuck it). I don't have much of an opinion about these bands… Or do I? Symphonic stuff suck pretty much always, the wrong part about doing symphonic metal is that real metal, old puke, is the opposite of what orchestral/symphonic music represent, so it's a weird crossover which Satan didn't intended when he created rock'n'roll. Another problem is that the guitars are only there to make it sound "hard", accompanying their movie soundtracks, they do not really play anything interesting. Where is the riffs? The Folk genre is pretty lame as well, but I do not despise all bands. I can think of a few bands that goes in that category that actually is really good and caries the metal spirit. Mostly bands that have the 90s Bathory vibe pounding strong, if you consider that "Viking". But most of the time they suffer the same fate as symphonic stuff; no riffs just flutes!? I like Power Metal if it's like early Blind Guardian, Helloween (yeah, with a great deal of speed) or Fates Warning. If you mostly just play double bass drums through out all your songs and have a cheesy chorus to add to that I don't find it particularly interesting. But if it's heavy metal with just a little more power, then thumbs up! Check out Reign in Hell with Solemnity for a relatively new Power Metal band that knows how it should be played. Germany! I think classifications and different genres is a good thing. A good ground for pointless discussion which seems very important at the time!

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

J: All of them, I do not dislike anything we've done, that would be really stupid right? I like the dynamic between the songs, when I'm up on stage I don't think "Yes, great I love to play this song, finally!" it's much more like; "Oh, no! This song is really tough, I'm sweating like a pig, might be a little too drunk…" and then I just play it.. Or it can go like this: "Oh, this song is easy, goody!".

F: I agree with Joel, we all enjoy the ones that needs the least effort to play.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

J: Not exercising I tell you!

F: Not much, doing the monotone everyday stuff like everyone else is forced to do. Then go home and not have any energy left until the next shit day arrives. You know the drill.

13. Your biggest band moment?

J: I don't know, as to much of your questions. I guess mine would be when I joined the band, nothing so far has topped that.

F: It is yet to come i believe. The biggest band moment for me would be when/if we ever release an album that i'm almost completely satisfied with. To really nail something! Production-, songwriting- and execution-wise. So far though i guess it would have to be the first album since it's the only one released at this point.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

J: It needs medical attention! We have a lot of great bands today, and the scene seems almost to flourish like in the 80s.. This is both good and bad of course, on one hand you get all this excellent bands but on the other hand you also get a bunch of crap. Breath taking (not in a good way) stank that needs to visit the men's room… or the women's, I don't mind, I'm politically correct you see.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

F: The dictionary carries the answer to this one. I wanted a one word name that was unique for the band, to me that is alot more important than how it spells and sounds. Of course the meaning is important too but i feel that the name suits us as well. Some complain about grammar and stuff like that, but who really cares?

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

J: Can we expect fans in the future? That would be great. We are cooking up different tasteful dishes, those who stay faithful to metal will find out. That's all I have to say for now, no further comments.

Thanks man! Med vänliga hälsningar, Joel Sundin

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) "Where Hope Turns Dripping Red" CD review by http://www.crossfire-metal.de

Image

By Joxe Schaefer

This band from Vasteras published in eleven years already five demos and now decided to drop album number one. Purely musically speaking, was the high time. Stupid it would have been if the world of Death would have to wait longer for the debut. Often set the growls as early as the first second of a song, and no less often to build repetitive Ripp-Offs on to atmospheres. The lyrics promise, indicated on the cover of it already, bloody war themes. Illuminate on song titles like "German Africa Corpse", I neither Bock, like their compatriots in Sabaton. Anyway, this degenerated technically obtuse Melodic Death Metal with their brutal growls and rippigen guitar work is not entirely to commercial irrelevance, alone as she skillfully build their mega heavy riffs, how to pencil in "Rocket Symphony". Only nine tracks left the Swedes the Audited. A shame because I would have a lot more of them can tolerate.

Rating: 7.5/10

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "Apollonian Eyes" CD EP review by http://www.cosmosgaming.com

Image

By Chris Dahlberg

Last year Septekh put out The Seth Avalanche, which was a re-recorded version of their 2009 EP. While the release showcased potential it didn’t quite have enough staying power, and its combination of thrash and death ‘n roll left me wondering where the band would head next. Fast forward to this year and the band has prepared a new four song EP entitled Apollonian Eyes and their emphasis seems to now be placed on a more violent, aggressive sound while still offering the occasional groove. It still isn’t quite a must listen, but Septekh is clearly on the right track and has taken some further steps forward with this release.

From what I remember of The Seth Avalanche, the instrumentals had a mix of mid tempo thrash and death ‘n roll/hard rock with the occasional fast paced thrash assault. Apollonian Eyes immediately makes it clear that these guys have upped the intensity level, as the EP opens with some extremely fast paced riffs that have an old-school thrash feel. Three of the four tracks follow this pattern and it seems to work quite well as the instrumentals are able to transition from quick bursts of blasting into fast paced grooves while keeping the energy level at a high. While I didn’t dislike their earlier sound, this more aggressive version of Septekh stands out more and the riffs seem to have gotten a bit more complex than before. On the final track “Vlad Tepes” the instrumentalists switch things up and go for a slower tempo, and during this track the guitar tonality takes on a melodic pitch that has a bit of a black metal feel. This number is the longest and showcases that the group seems to be experimenting a bit outside of the traditional thrash and rock ‘n roll templates, which should help give them more variation moving forward.

Vocalist Nils Meseke has a distorted scream that strikes a nice middle ground between high and low pitches, and his performance seems to have gotten even more intense as the band has sped things up. What’s interesting about Meseke’s vocals is that he seems to hit the highest pitches during the slower moments, and his delivery style takes on more of a storytelling feel during “Vlad Tepes” which gives that particular track a very different feel than the rest of the EP. I’m not quite sure what it is about the performance on Apollonian Eyes that made a difference, but despite the fact that the style remains similar to The Seth Avalanche there’s just something about the intensity/energy level that makes the vocals stand out much more.

Apollonian Eyes does have a few sections that sound a bit too similar, but their new approach towards faster, aggressive thrash tracks and slower segments that pull from some additional stylistic elements seems to be working in their favor. I feel like this EP showcases a slightly different side of the band when compared to The Seth Avalanche, and hopefully when the band puts out a full length they can pull all of these elements together into a strong package. For now though, Apollonian Eyes has some blistering riffs that should please thrash fans and it’s a sign that this group has already grown quite a bit.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.vs-webzine.com

Image

By Olivier 'Zoltar' Badin

I confess, I confess, I've never been a customer 100% satisfied with the GATES OF SLUMBER THE case. However, the group had anything to please me a plethora of literary references fly by ultra overused, but every time (Robert E. Howard, HP Lovecraft), a diehard attitude and unwavering faith against d a 'real' doom which at the time of the formation in 1998, was then far from being returned to the odor of sanctity, as is the case today. Yet, while having the chance to be friends with Frederic Caure (then a member of THEE PLAGUE OF GENTLEMEN and future Serpentcult) when the latter told me he rode his own label named FINAL CHAPTER RECORDS and more than a compilation, his first album would be one of the first of this trio from the depths of Indiana, I have not spit in the soup, while chronicling the beast to do HARD HEAVY then posing in a corner to do more (too much) to return. Until now ... Today, nine years after its initial release and its disappearance from radar screens (FINAL CHAPTER having had, in the end, a life too short), what strikes me the most with this reissue of '... The Awakening' is primarily how the style of the group was already in place. Despite a different line-up (we then found the APOSTLE OF SOLITUDE future Chuck Brown on drums), his total devotion and unrestrained in SAINT VITUS was then very firmly in place. Certainly, his influences, heavy metal the old 'were already there too. But contrary to what happened on the following discs (with mixed results elsewhere enough), it is only a backdrop or a visit to a particular riff. And now with a new cover a hundred times more appropriate than the original (and signed by the great illustrator of fantasy and Conan, Ken Kelly), I realize that not only the time did nothing to blunt the blade their ax but in addition, it is perhaps still there, despite its flaws and its side a little broke, their best album to date. Sharper in the soul as 'Conqueror' (2007), less ass between two chairs that during the period of 'Hymns Of Blood And Thunder' (2009) and less pessimistic than in 'The Wretch' (2011), THE GATES OF SLUMBER then a warlike do so with no half measure. Even ring sometimes quite raw and not even try to use a rhythm guitar as a 'carpet' when Karl Simon solo part in the Dave Chandler. Moreover, even if this great mustache already balding on the head sounded OZZY OSBOURNE already as the poor, his texts then going straight to the point (everything you need to know about "The Executioner" or "Broken On The Wheel" is contained in the title) were so perfectly in tune with the doom absolute. And a bonus track taken from their third demo ("The Cloaked Figure") in addition, as with Champomy, the party is even more crazy for 54 minutes. No wonder then that these barbarians were great friends with REVEREND BIZARRE mule for level heads and sure of their mission, it was the best thing since ...

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.headbang.it

Image

By DukeFog

Second album at home Bane , training consists Serbian honest work directly and evil black metal that does not disdain scaffolding melodic without the need to decelerate from its destructive intent. Already a first listen inevitably clarifies the profile of who can fully enjoy Acausal The Fire , who is in fact flirting for some time with the sound that Swedish will make more sense in this release that in the forty short minutes distributes heat and desire to do well. Although we are in a situation "more hidden" you can do for Bane the same type of argument made ??for the Germans Thulcandra (although it should rightly specify how Bane seek more an opportunity that diversifies the original formula), or how it is almost impossible not to think <i <Dissection (or Naglfar more direct or Marduk less "closed") and their unique style, to join us in this adventure we also think the cover of this time shift that points the finger at Night's Blood (track mail rightly conclusion, the stage goes right to the seven songs plus intro / outro). tracklist The proceeds smoothly and shipped, and the decision to operate on a playing time content certainly helps to jump right into the mood of the disc not delay in crushing the listener with its incandescent riffs and devilish. The casting has not the slightest hesitation, the trio of songs placed in opening flagella that is a pleasure, but I would like to mention in particular a Chaos Rises As can show you exactly what it means to play at the same time interesting and derivatives, the boys this song is really great shoot parts and exciting. Even following the Light The Black Flame is no joke at all due to his dark rolling and trying to follow a path "ritual" that comes off in some way from the "modus operandi" (although you should not expect a sudden change of atmosphere). The Truth Unleashed ruin part of the festival (accompanied nell'ingrato task from the lowest point of the entire disk that is represented by World Of Desolation ), not that it's all a loss but I find the little catchy vocal lines / successful and able to plunge the always good songwriting background. Existence In Denial returns to reap the harvest with confidence and leaves us with just hope to have something even better in the future. Acausal The Fire is private game for a few, the Bane you can not bring out a little but the same time leave you cold unless he is given the proper attention.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD / LP review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

(Abyss Records) They are Swedish and are published by the American label. They are Swedish and have only two, the guitarist and singer Markus and drummer Michael Ibrahim Joha. They are Swedish and until now had only made ??two demos. They are Swedish and have not only this. The Desultor have played an album of progressive death metal, where the violent brutality is typical Swedish tendency to know how to put songs in the ocean of nastiness. Besides, there is also a good dose of pathos, especially in the voice (and clean vocals) of Joha reminiscent of Warrel Dane of Nevermore. The songs are Desultor violence, chaos and high-sounding melodies that elevate each piece to incredible and this is because of the vocals, guitar solos and the various steps and changes that each carries within itself. Every single song is a scene of unprecedented power, as well of unbelievable beauty. Each song is an amazing metamorphosis of steps and wisely managed by swirling guitars (the ranges in thrash riffing, in the death metal solutions in Scandinavian and American) and a drumming perfect (pity about the sound too compressed). They are damn good and Ibrahim Joha and "Master of Hate" is a compendium of death metal, progressive and an endless pursuit of melodies and atmospheres that capture from start to finish. Also the songs survive on an average minutes 3 and a half, this means to assimilate the pieces with ease, because they come to the point. Wonderful!

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by http://www.scratchthesurface-webzine.com

Image

By Curt

I am extremely impressed by Eternal Helcerax's latest album "Against All Odds". So impressed in fact that I have already gone on record in another publication as saying that I felt it is one of the best album's to be released so far in 2012.
For those of you who don't know yet, Eternal Helcerex are an Irish band that sounds like a cross between black metal and Amon Amarth. Unlike most black metal bands that do their best to sound as evil as possible, Eternal Helcerex pile on the viking/pagan metal sound and the result is so profoundly awesome that words can hardly describe it.
In a nutshell though: try to imagine old-school In Flames and Amon Amarth combined with black metal. Awesome right? This album is going to definitely be on my "best of" end of the year lists without a doubt. If you're a metalhead that has ever been leery of listening to black metal in the past, dismissing it as noise or just turned off by it in general, check Eternal Helcerex out and see how well it can be done. Many BM purists will be horrified by this, but fuck 'em and pick up a fantastic album. All of the album is fantastic but if I had to pick a favorite it would probably be "Invictus" with its majestic melody. Check it out as soon as it releases on April 27th.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://metalasfuck.net

Image

By metalasfuck

Swedish death metal band kicks up a stink.
Formed in 2011 by a quartet of Swedish metal diehards, Fetus Stench was snapped up quickly after putting together a four-song demo of crushing death metal. Such was the overwhelming response to the aural ear-bashing they wasted little time in releasing their first LP.
From ex-Blood Red Throne drummer Emil Wiksten’s opening drum explosion letting in Andreas "Björte" Björnson’s throaty scream, Stillbirth is a pummelling debut. The gloriously racing, crunching guitars of Björnson, Christoffer "Illern" Ilberg and the throbbing bass of Kristian "Bullen" Karlsson are constantly being chased by Wiksten’s unyielding beat.
The four cuts from that early demo are among the stand out tracks. The devastating opener Meat Grinder Flesh Obliteration, Stillborn Son, Severe Suffering and the chilling finale By Butchery Divorced sound like each instrument is trying to rip the other apart. The Outer Island provides the most unforgiving death metal riff competing in a battle against the battering drums.
The labour was quick and the delivery near faultless. The resulting offspring is anything but still; it’s charging about the place crashing against every surface. And like any ill-behaved baby, you can’t ignore it.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by http://battlehelm.com

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

You might now the names of Allen West and Marco Vreven from their musical past. You might even have thought about what it would sound like had they collaborated. And even if you, like me, hasn’t given it a single thought you now have the chance to hear what a collaboration like that would sound like courtesy of Southwicked. If you like the groove of Obituary then you’ll gotta love this. This is heavy, hard and it grooves like there is no tomorrow. This is metal for all those of us who likes Obituary and Bolt Thrower. This just proves that you don’t have to be fast all the time to be good. Even if you turn the pace down you can still be hard and heavy. This is the sound to the Armageddon. This is pure enjoyment. This is some really cool stuff.
