Good luck with Nocte Obducta. Dunno what happened to them after their break, but they are certainly not the same band. I'm very disappointed with Umbriel.
Maybe I expected too much as they used to be one of my favourite bands

yeah, I just listened to a couple songs on youtube, and you are right. Not even close to what they were before...I loved their stuff up to and including the Nektar albums.

Well I did manage to get a listen to the new Agrypnie. It was very solid. Definitely less black metal elements, but that's not a bad thing. The band's brand of very melodic and moving metal is still here in spades. I'll have to listen to it a few more times, but it may just be as good as 16[485]. Maybe better.

Honestly I'm not a fan of the style and am not one in a position to have a particularly valid opinion, I just really wanted to say Angrypie haha.

The Nektar albums were masterpieces. Glad I'm not alone in feeling disappointed with the new one.

On the other hand, October Tide's "Tunnel Of No Light is absolutely brilliant.

Cultes des Ghoules is so good. What are the best 2013 black metal albums so far?

I'm about to listen to the new Ash Borer, Paysage d'Hiver, and Horna. Also the new Svn Okklt compilation from a couple friends of mine. The first one had a lot of great, obscure black metal. I expect this one to be fantastic as well.

I agree with you on the Nektar album's but I also really appreciate Umbriel, which seems to be the successor to Sequenzen Einer Wanderung. Definitely one of my top albums of the year thus far...

IV: Mandragora by Botanist is a rather strange black metal album but it's been really growing on me over the last few days. This new one is really the pinnacle of the project's work thus far in my opinion. The songs are varied, the atmosphere is engrossing. For those who don't know, it's one guy and there are no guitars or bass. Just a drum set, a highly distorted hammer dulcimer and black metal vocals. It's certainly unique, but there are some truly ethereal moments on this one.

Just released yesterday, album called Resolution by an Irish band called Chosen. Fucking awesome, the riffs and drums are beastly and the singer has mad pipes. Here's a taster. Rest of the album's even better.

Free download off their website too, link under the video. Enjoy.

Yo why has nobody here mentioned the new Byzantine album? I wouldn't know how to classify them, some elements of thrash, some groove, some melodeath, but whatever it is it works out wonderfully.
Full stream here.

Uncle Acid - Mind Control.

Can't wait for this. Also can't believe there's no pre order or anything happening for it yet. Less than a few weeks from release, one of the most hyped/sought after bands, who have just started playing live , about to release their follow up album, about to play roadburn...and there's nothing about this anywhere. Leave it to Rise Above.

!!! Didn't even know about this! You're right though, Rise Above has some totally great bands that don't get nearly enough attention. thanks for making my day.

Devil - Gather The Sinners

Pretty awesome album. Better production and songwriting than their debut. Liked it better than the debut, but I feel the debut did have catchier choruses.

Image

Black Capricorn - Born Under The Capricorn

Good release. Rather different than their debut. I miss the flowy vocas, but has great songwriting at times.

Yeah! That album RULES. Very strong production job and tons of heavy, slamming riffs.

the debut album ("fast loud death") of finnish youngsters lost society is some seriously punchy old school thrash:

While they're good, I really don't understand the hype. Nuclear Blast marketing, I guess.

The new Imperium Dekadenz album "Meadows of Nostalgia" is really well done. It has surprise me and is one of the best 2013 albums so far to date for me.

Obviously Katalepsy and Wormed have been brought up a lot, but for an extra, I'm quite fond of Euphoric Defilements debut album. It isn't going to make by best off, but I like it a fair bit.

As for OSDM, there's been plenty of solid efforts like Krypts and Sorcery, but Vorum is really the only one I've got up in my best of list so far. Even then its still on the lower side of the equation.

I feel the same way. It's not bad, but not going to be the best of the year.

Until now my favourite albums of the year are:

Caladan Brood
Rotting Christ
Synkvervet
Fen

They were officialy released in 2012 but The "real" cds have been available in 2013, I have two cases, Elffor and Amiensus(the digipack is yet to be released), both awesome albums.

Adding this to my list of favourite albums so far this year: Regarde Les Hommes Tomber s/t debut. Their brand of sludge with hints of black metal elements is what I've been looking for

Traded some of my old records for some Wolfs Spell material. Their 'Nekromancy' and split with Zagévatre are definitely worth it. Raw black metal in the vein of early Mayhem, Celtic Frost, and Mutiilation.

The Black Cilice/Dead Procession split is amazing, too.

Ah, my first ever post here. Hell-o.

2013 is going just fine by me. I'm pretty picky (being OLD and all) but I am real happy with these 3 thus far:

Seeds of Iblis - Anti Quran Rituals
I decided to buy this one sound unheard and was pleasantly surprised by what a tight, entertaining listen it is. May not be a mind-blower or anything like that but a must-have, I’d say.

Situs Magus - Le grand oeuvre
Something damn special about this one. It just seems to race by incredibly quick, I am always amazed that 50 minutes has elapsed when it comes to a close. Have a feeling this will be album of the year for me.

Tribulation - The Formulas of Death
Great mesh of sound. Requires concentration or else it can deceivingly pass by without notice of its intricacies. This is gonna be tough to wear out. It keeps calling out for me to listen to it. I'm guessing it is gonna just keep getting better and better with each listen.

Gökböri - Balbal

Thrash-Black metal in Turkish language. Lyrics are basically about pagan Turkish history. I started listening with no expectation but after a tour, it sounds pretty decent. Darkthrone influence is very obvious, but still a good record. By the way, drummer is Jesse Haff from Daylight Dies.

Have a listen here:

Artwork is amazing:

In my opinion, there have been plenty of worthwhile albums this year, but unlike last year nothing has blown me away yet. Although to be fair, I think I really grew musically (in understanding and knowledge) last year.

So far my favourites would be: Abyssal (I hope some people liked my -first ever- review despite it seeming to focus on the negatives! :) ), Fen, Voivod, Rotting Christ, Suffocation, Bong Goblin and Dream Death. Wormed seems good, but I've only given it a cursory listen...

It may not be under the remit of the thread, but Deathchain's new album is a bit disappointing. As is the new Darkthrone.
