In this thread, we discuss great worship bands, or bands who try, and in the case of this thread succeed, at sounding very similar to older bands while also borrowing from the bands lyrical aesthetic and image. This is the key thing that makes a worship band a worship band. Another way to think of it is like a tribute band that doesn't do covers but writes original songs in the vein of older bands. So while a band like say... Torture Chain is trying to sound like Darkthrone and Mayhem, they are not really a "worship" act because they have their own aesthetic

For example, Entrails: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNYukzSBBxc

It's pretty obvious that Entrails are trying to look, act and sound like Entombed in just about every way. Now, I think Entrails is pure shit, but they are a pretty popular example of what I am looking for.

Here are a few more examples of bands I think that are good:

War Master: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS2XxW1WXR4
Bolt Thrower worship. Not my label, the bands.

Putrevore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2ho8aLAWuQ
First album only. It's pure Rottrevore worship

Spearhead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WKPhbvLNd8
Angelcorpse worship. Lyrics about war, blast beat heavy Blackened DM sound

All genre's welcome, though I am specifically looking for Death Metal, Black Metal, Grindcore, Thrash and Doom. Still, if you know some NWOBH, Power Metal, Hardcore... post it here.

Warhammer;

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Warhammer/767

I've not listened to them much myself, but I'm sure you can guess which band they worship. They actually disown some of their earlier material because it doesn't sound enough like Hellhammer, so it certainly fits the purposes of this thread.

Woodtemple is an obvious Graveland worship, and the last album is when he started making really decent music:

Apokalyptic Raids for some Hellhammer goodness:

Werewolf (Poland), R.I.P., was basically Graveland worship, especially on their first album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbT_VjWG_rQ

This was a side project of Iuvenes, which was also kind of Graveland and/or Bathory worship (depending on the album), but Werewolf sounded better to me.

I wouldn't say Monads is a complete worship band of Mournful Congregation, but they definitely acknowledge the influence the latter has had on their sound. It's unique enough to stand on its own and I fucking love their demo!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-DSq_JZRFc

Another funeral doom band called Foetor is more or less pure Thergothon worship. It is difficult to find any information on them but I managed to track down the demo (a digital form of it, at least) and it sounds quite atmospheric.

Here's some nifty Bathory worship.

Macabre Omen - Greek BM, the only thing is the lyrics are about Greek legends, not Norse ones.

Sleipnir - Nice up and coming British band in the viking metal scene.

Iuvenes - Great Bathory and Graveland worship (also a lot better than the latter).

Morrigan - These guys are fantastic. Out of all the Bathory clones, they capture the essence the best, mostly because of the brilliant vocal range between clean and harsh. Check out Celts and Headcult.

Solitaire is some pretty sweet Exciter worship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64On_YtxspU

Insane released one album back in 2003 that is pure Show no Mercy era Slayer worship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41QdJnNEyOE

Plenty of osdm revival bands do nothing but worship Incantation, Immolation, Autopsy and the likes. Morbus Chron is very good Autopsy worship with the meandering riffs for starters.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdNFgYMepN8

Claws is pretty much Abhorrence worship with the putrid grinding influenced death metal sound.

I think The County Medical Examiners would probably perfectly qualify for a "worship" band when it comes to Carcass.

In fact, I heard Jeff Walker was going to sue them for imitating their style too much at one point but dropped the charges.

I fucking love them personally.

Aria made some very Iron Maiden style stuff back in the 80s... Only have one album and heard nothing more but it's quite solid!

Though many possibly shun them, I personally am quite a big fan of Majesty/Metalforce,
esp. their "Sword & Sorcery" and "Metalforce" albums.
Total mid-era Manowar worship, kind of like a perfect clone, so to say...

At some point or another most gore grind bands of note were Carcass worship bands. For eg : Impaled and Exhumed who I think are th best of the lot. But there are many many more. And CME of course as mentioned above.

I think Sword & Sorcery is a pretty good album, the other albums aren't as good but have their moments in a few songs at least.
But I can easily listen through Sword & Sorcery from beginnign to end without feeling to skip any song.
Some of them aren't the best, but some are simply awesome. My favorite is probably Lord Of The Damned! Sounds a like a forgotten dark Manowar song... Haha, saying something sounds like Manowar in the same sentence as Majesty is probably impossible not to say...

I dunno about "great," but Seventh Avenue are pretty much a textbook Gamma Ray worship band. They even got the intro to "Tribute to the Past" going on.

They may not be worshippy to the nth degree, but all I can think of when I listen to Portrait is "Mercyful Fate, Mercyful Fate, Mercyful Fate... yep, Mercyful Fate"...

Tangorodrim is probably the best Celtic Frost worship I've ever heard (unless you're counting early Darkthrone)

Beat me to it! Haha!
Yes, I second Thulcandra. Some bands with quite a Dissection worship... this is a good thread for such discoveries
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=73141

Lately, there's a number of old school "Incantation" worship bands. But notable ones are: Disma, Dead Congregation and Vasaeleth
