MetalIreland has a solid interview with Alan Averil, who has founded a new band where he writes all the music and lyrics. He's recruited Bones on guitars (Wizards of the Firetop Mountain) and SOL Dubh on drums (Alan's bandmate Simon from Primordial).

Here is a link to a YouTube clip of "Thirteen Clergy to the Flames", an old school, roughshod black/doom track. Alan's vocals at times... well honestly I'll just letcha all listen and enjoy for yourselves :-)

Roadburn have an announcement here on their upcoming EP. Personally, I am looking forward to hearing more from this band!

Yep love the song, love the contrast of his normal booming brilliance and the cheesy gremlin voice he uses in the verses, this is very anticipated for me.

I love it. And it appeared so out of the blue. I had no idea he had other voices too, the Mark Shelton type vocals fit perfectly. And it's quite impressive he wrote the whole record. Didn't know he even knew how to play guitar.

You can definitely hear cues from older Black Sabbath there. Not just the superficially reminiscent stuff like the tritonus-fifth hammer lick, but the atmosphere definitely reminds me of Sabbath's first album. It's dark, foreboding and there's an immense sense of doom in it.

This!

I actually meant to make a thread about this when the song was first released. I've been listening to it constantly, it's just so great. I guess I'm in agreement with the consensus, it's really cool to hear Nemtheanga pay tribute to classic doom metal. I just love that opening line: HOLY MARY, THE DEVIL IS COOOOMIIIING!!!

Also, as an extra aside, that was a really well put together interview piece, interesting, insightful, and delivered in a far more professional manner than just a back and forth Q&A, I wish more online blog things had that standard of article construction.

Wow, loving the contrast of Nemtheanga's nasally Sabbath singing and his harsher vocals. The riffing & drumming is well-suited to him too. I can't wait to hear more!

I'll eat whatever Nemtheanga produces.

Does anyone know how's the Twilight of the Gods album coming?

I've been wondering the same thing. I don't believe there's been any mention of it for, like, a year or so. My guess is that it's on hold for the time being since all the members seem to be engaged with their respective primary bands (Aura Noir recently put out an album, new Thyrfing album, I think Einherjer are doing a new album, and obviously Nemtheanga is doing this Dread Sovereign gig along with touring with Primordial. Can't wait to see them again at Brutal Assault this summer!), but I'm hoping it hasn't been forgotten about.

A note to the OP: Regarding the thread title, I don't think this is regarded by Nemtheanga as a solo band.

Whoa....that was cool. Totally unexpected surprise. If I understand the link correctly, it's initial release is going to be vinyl only. Hope there's a CD release because this sounds like a must have.

Looking at the comments on the interview, Alan himself says its not being reissued at all, saying the whole point of the festivals record label is that the releases are exclusive to the fest. Kinda wanky manufactured scarcity and lame format limitation no doubt, but its the way its going down it seems.

I'm really looking forward to this Twilight of the Gods album when/if it surfaces. Time shall tell.

A note to your note Razakel, I worded it like that as he is writing all the music and is firmly at the helm of this project (according to that interview). It perhaps may not be the best way to put it, but the space for titles is limited, hence that description. If there's a better way to word it than I have, by all means give me a suggestion.

It's a great song, not as awesome as the other one but that's more of a testament to the greatest of that thing than a detriment to the quality found here.

Second track is awesome. Heavier, more doomier than the first, but still not quite as amazing (but as Necroticism said, that's merely a testament to how butt-fucking awesome 13 Clergy is). Still, when this new song explodes and loses its shit at the end, that's insane.

Discovered Primordial not too long ago (thanks to this forum community actually) and Alan Averil quickly found a spot in my top 25 favorite vocalists. Great voice, lots of feeling and presence and totally original melodies. He has a very distinctive style and is so versatile.

I just listened to this new project and that's right up my alley! Fuck yes!

Based on these two songs alone, I am going to order asap. That second song is killer, I may like it more than first actually, but not by much.

Very cool stuff. The honesty in Nemtheanga's approach is unmatched in today's scene (perhaps Darkthrone).

The interview mentioned 5 songs being written so hopefully they'll be able to put out a full album soon on disc as I don't listen to vinyl...

This second song is just as great. His little gremlin voice is the perfect companion to his massive, massive regular voice he throws into the chorus, and I love that ugly little jangle during it too. Brilliant, brilliant stuff. I want a full length of this yesterday.

Really liking this as well. What a great guitar tone! Is "thirteen clergy" up there on youtube the entire song, or just a clip of its latter half?
