Snake River on Mars:

does not look very much different from some spots on Earth.

"Neutron stars are about 10 - 20 km in diameter (they cannot collapse further as this is the closest the neutrons can pack together) and have the mass of about 1.4 times that of our Sun (which is over 1 million km in diameter). This means that a neutron star is so dense that on Earth, one teaspoonful would weigh a billion tons"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvHHZO2wmmg

If a star were to go supernova 30 light years away from us, the radiation would kill us. Luckily the closest star nearing this stage is 400 light years away (Betelguese).

Imagine if there are exotic forms of life on Titan right now that instead of being dependent on liquid water they make use of liquid methane and ethane. In that respect, Titan is at a sort of exotic Goldilocks zone for such life to evolve.

I have no idea what the actual chemistry would be like and life would likely be completely different from what we know as life. Probably slow growing organisms with slow metabolisms.

I wouldn't surprise me if there are some forms of extremophiles there. I think the conditions on Titan are slightly better than some of the conditions we've found them in on Earth (but don't quote me on that).

I found a shorter and differently made video of this a few years ago, and I regret I can't locate it again, but this is a video that zooms into the center of the Milky Way, and shows actual time-lapse pics of the stars that orbit the central super-massive black hole there. THIS is science, people, and in a spectacular form, too.

That was a great link, Napero. I find it hard to believe that there would be nothing short of a s/m black hole in the center of our own galaxy, if not all. Still, I see some people posit other theories and make sometimes dubious, or strangely compelling arguments. I Just typed in a google search for 'Theories against black holes' and found many a link like so: http://starburstfound.org/sqkblog/?p=115 Still, I lean towards the super massive black hole camp on this subject.

Edited inhumanist picked me up on the Great attractor causing accelerated expansion, when in fact it is believed to be caused by dark energy *

I've been reading how scientists calculate distances to the stars and galaxies. It is hard to give an accurate distance, one of the reasons is the universe is expanding, not only expanding but accelerating, and they aren't sure why. *One theory is everything is drawn toward the Great Attractor*.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Attractor

Determining redshift (for objects moving away from us) and blueshift (for objects moving toward us) in the spectrum of emitted light helps scientists calculate the distances to stars,

I don't think you understood that. The great attractor can't be the reason the universe expands because it attracts things.

Universe expanding = increasing entropy

Things being drawn to one point = decreasing entropy

wikipedia wrote:
These galaxies are all redshifted, in accordance with the Hubble Flow, indicating that they are receding relative to us and to each other, but the variations in their redshift are sufficient to reveal the existence of the anomaly.

I read that as it being an anomaly that creates a disturbance in the normal movement of galaxies which is accelerated uniform expansion.

Sorry, your right, - it is believed the acceleration could be due to dark energy, though there is no evidence it exists.

Also, it is difficult to measure distances when; 1 billion years ago the light from other parts of the universe is now (upon reaching us) stretched.

That still doesn't make sense, sorry. The Wikipedia page doesn't support that either.

deviation from uniform expansion of the universe

Personally I think only Darth Nihilus can be the culprit of that disturbance in the force.

I took Astronomy for my degree in college, and it was one of the most interesting classes I took in pursuit of my degree. I wrote some great papers on some very interesting topics.

I still follow the topic, and read about it. I came across a great article that I didn't see posted here. It is an article by Stephen Hawking on Time Travel, and what would be needed to do it. It does fall into the topic of Astronomy, and it is pretty interesting.

http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2012/02/i-do-believe-in-time-travel-time-travel-to-the-future-time-flows-like-a-river-and-it-seems-as-if-each-of-us-is-carried-rele.html

Quote:
"It really is that simple. If we want to travel into the future, we just need to go fast. Really fast. And I think the only way we're ever likely to do that is by going into space. The fastest manned vehicle in history was Apollo 10. It reached 25,000mph. But to travel in time we'll have to go more than 2,000 times faster. And to do that we'd need a much bigger ship, a truly enormous machine. The ship would have to be big enough to carry a huge amount of fuel, enough to accelerate it to nearly the speed of light. Getting to just beneath the cosmic speed limit would require six whole years at full power.

"The initial acceleration would be gentle because the ship would be so big and heavy. But gradually it would pick up speed and soon would be covering massive distances. In one week it would have reached the outer planets. After two years it would reach half-light speed and be far outside our solar system. Two years later it would be travelling at 90 per cent of the speed of light. Around 30 trillion miles away from Earth, and four years after launch, the ship would begin to travel in time. For every hour of time on the ship, two would pass on Earth. A similar situation to the spaceship that orbited the massive black hole. After another two years of full thrust the ship would reach its top speed, 99 per cent of the speed of light. "At this speed, a single day on board is a whole year of Earth time. Our ship would be truly flying into the future.

"The slowing of time has another benefit. It means we could, in theory, travel extraordinary distances within one lifetime. A trip to the edge of the galaxy would take just 80 years. But the real wonder of our journey is that it reveals just how strange the universe is. It's a universe where time runs at different rates in different places. Where tiny wormholes exist all around us. And where, ultimately, we might use our understanding of physics to become true voyagers through the fourth dimension."

I'm surprised there hasn't been any talk of billionaire funded manned missions to Mars in here. Admittedly it still sounds a bit pie in the sky but it has stirred up some interest from people who normally could give two shits about space exploration. If Tito wants to get enough outside funding to do this he's going to need SpaceX to keep running smoothly in order to . . . uh oh!

Sounds pretty far-fetched. We don't even have a vehicle capable of taking people to the moon at the moment, and they want to send people to Mars in 5 years? Sure, it's only a fly-by and not a landing, but still seems dubious. We'll see I guess, I wish them great success but I have my doubts.

Is anyone familiar with Jeff Talman's instillation/cd Nature of the Night Sky? He and an astrophysicist produced an ambient record that is literally the music of the stars: http://www.npr.org/2011/08/13/139600689/sounds-of-stars-fall-in-a-bavarian-forest.

Essentially, they made stars' seismic data audible to the human hear. It's incredible.

You should listen to Saturn. It sounds like a prison of lovecraftian monsters competing in a death race.

In fact...here you go.

It would be much better if they'd shut up so you could actually listen to the damn thing though.

Comet PANSTARRS is visible in the Northern Hemisphere and will be at its brightest around the 10th. It's apparently seen best on the Western horizon just after sunset with binoculars or telescope (it's about as bright as the North Star apparently. A good warm-up for the much brighter comet ISON that'll be gracing the skies around November.

From an explanation of the Cosmological principle; (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmological_principle)

Quote:
In essence, this in a sense says that the Universe is knowable and is playing fair with scientists

However,

Quote:
The Huge-LQG was discovered in January 2013

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huge-LQG

Quote:
The Huge-LQG is three times longer than, and twice as wide as is predicted possible according to these current models, and so challenges our understanding of the universe on large scales

Scientists say no place in the universe is special, prior to this discovery, but if this area of space is unique then hasn't our understanding of the large scale homogeneity of the universe been turned on its head?
