I'm impressed by the doom metal found on the latest The Ruins of Beverast album. It is quite varied, with lots of time changes. It's a breath of fresh air for me, compared to all the doom metal bands that plod along at the same pace playing variations on the same riff for 12 minutes. So, what's some other doom like this - that varies the pace with time changes? The more such variation, the better. I'm curious to see how much of this kind of thing is out there. It can be funeral doom or more traditional doom - doesn't matter to me. Thanks!

Aarni play more avant-garde doom, coupled with wacky lyrics and lots of different instruments.

Aarni are a good rec, but they are too loony for my tastes. They seem kind of like Umbah - some good avant-garde songwriting, but so goofy that I can't take them seriously.

Well, to be fair, they aren't really meant to be taken seriously.

Good thread, I hope to find more of these bands also.

The only thing I've found that come close to "ruins of Beverast" is the associated project "Verdunkeln."

As for interesting doom with time changes, I enjoy "ahab" and "asunder" a lot. But they are nothing like "ruins of Beverast"

The Ruins of Beverast is majestic, I don't think I've heard something really similar to it yet. But in terms of varied doom I'd recommend Pantheist, they are sort of Funeral doom with a lot of clean vocals and passages tinged with a bit of post-punk and avant-garde. Apart from that you could check out Green Carnation's first album and Mournful Congregation who are mostly repetitive funeral doom but possess a really nice sense of melody.

Pantheist is a good rec, especially their later stuff, it's funeral doom with some trad and even some Deep Purple influences.

I'll rec Witch Mountain for now and I'll edit my post tomorrow to add more stuff. Their tempos are quite varied from mid paced bluesy trad doom to very slow bluesy doom and Uta Plotkin's vocals are ranging from high soaring fabulous cleans to the occasional deep grunts (why am I taking the time to write that, it's all in my review :( anyway, check them out)

I'd add the O Solitude album too, surprisingly varied for a funeral doom album.

Certainly not a new band, but you might like Sacrilege's (UK) "Turn Back Trilobite". They used to be thrash band before they recorded this album, so there are thrash influences.

Check out When Nothing Remains & Mar de Grises
latter leans a little closer to mdm than doom, but check the Streams Inwards album

You might like German/polish band Pik. That's definitely your typical doom.

Hopefully I won't like PIK, not sure how happy I would be wearing a shirt or a patch from a band whose name means cock in danish, oh well.

EDIT: Haha, just saw that they changed name to Credo, this is from Credo's MA-page "Unfortunately the name PIK has in some lands an unsuitable meaning for our music and therefore agrees not with our band philosophy....."

Hehe yeah, their name worked against them in certain parts of the world. A shame it might take the focus from their quite interesting take on Doom metal.

You may enjoy the slower works of Blut aus nord. "mystical beast of rebellion" reissue, "mort," slower songs on "the work..." and "sect(s)" all have a very similar Ruins of Beverast sound in my opinion.
