Mouth of the Architect was pretty damn cool, but I think Androdion made a much clearer picture of what I wanted than I did, since I wasn't really looking for that sort of sludgey thing, more straight up post rock which was focussed on the more overt hooks and melodies. MotA was still cool though, thanks.

With that being said Shora's album Malval could be of interest. Pretty weird at points though, I'm still not sure if I like it or not. ;)

I'm not sure what you guys mean by straight-up post rock. Do you mean pure post-rock without the sludgey/metallic/droney influences? Something along the lines of space rock? Not sure if you know about these guys but you can check out Flying Saucer Attack. They're very ambient.

This is so not what I'm looking for... I mean space rock/shoegaze?!

In a nutshell, yes. Post-rock that is recognizably post-rock and not a 50/50 hybrid, but that at the same time retains a great sense of dynamics. Take Mono (which I don't like) for instance. They keep a minimalistic build-up for 5 minutes, then off into a climax and then into a minimalistic passage again. EITS are slightly more dynamic but they still abuse the "rollercoaster" of build-up/release and have a structure that's mostly devoid of riffs.

I think the perfect example of what I'm after (and probably lord_ghengis as well) is stuff like Red Sparowes. Or Pelican sans the sludgey parts.

I think I have an inkling at what you're getting at. It's been ages since I heard these guys - 'Mogwai' have a really expansive discography where tracks have both a good dose of minimalism as well as instrumentation and the crescendo that you were speaking of. Unless you've heard them all, maybe something might catch your fancy there?

Aaaaah. Sorry mate, missed it while skimming through the posts. Anywho, I'm listening to Old Silver Key, not up your alley but I'm enjoying this mellow-Drudkh-ish vibe that this band has got going on.

Here is the list of releases I have so far compiled:

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the Norwegian project Biosphere, notably the album Substrata, is along similar lines of winter synth.
Also Jaarportit may interest you with his nature-themed synth music.

Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock" might be what you need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrS5ztAJ5xw

The songs aren't based on typical post-rock ideas of "build/release/build/release/etc", but rather on deep, flowing atmospheres, heavy improvisation mixed with post-production song crafting, and very deliberate song structures. It also might not be what you want, as it's really early post-rock (created before the term was coined, I believe), and thus doesn't really sound like what most people today first think of when the term "post-rock" is mentioned, but definitely worth a shot. For me, "Laughing Stock" has become one of my favorite albums, so I can't recommend it enough when people are looking for post-rock that doesn't sound like GY!BE, or other popular artists of the genre.

Do Make Say Think could be what you're looking for. Not too reliant on the build/release thing.

Or maybe Dianogah. They're a bit more in Math-Rock territory, but they've always impressed me with their dynamics.

@rumpusaurus - Been there, done that. I've already investigated the early post-rock scene and stuff like Talk Talk or Bark Psychosis. Sadly it's not the kind of music that I can appreciate, although BP's Hex is quite the album.

@balbulus - Will try those, although Slint didn't do much for me either (the math rock connection).

I'm still trying to find bands that are like Necro Deathmort. I love that band. All I can think of is JK Flesh for something similar but then again they don't sound too alike.

Anybody have suggestions?

If anyone could point in the way of something similar to The Angelic Process, that would be great. I especially like the vocal approach and the feel of complete, all-consuming desperation.

EDIT: androdion, you might like Kauan.

I'll give them a try, although it seems I might just have to throw the towel on the floor when concerning post-rock. I think that Red Sparowes must be the exception that confirms the rule. :p

As for your request, it has been asked before and there's apparently no other band that mixes things as they do. Jesu do the more airy and soothing variant of "dronegaze" and Nadja are an almost pure drone act, although both share some similarities at points. I've tried looking up for "dronegaze", noise, shoegaze, drone, yada yada bands, and wasn't able to find anything like them sadly.

I suspected as much :( I haven't listened to Nadja yet, though. They have such a huge discography, where would you recommend I start?

I was sorting my collection and came across this band called 'Elm'. I searched the archives and found no mention of them. Worth a try androdion. People have tagged them as folk/drone.

You asked for it...

Recently, The Primitive World and Dagdrom have been quite good, the former is a colab with Vampillia which adds a nice piano to the mix and the latter has the drummer from The Jesus Lizard which is a nice addition. Besides those two releases, everything from 2010-2011 is pretty bad/forgettable. Usually their remastered releases are better, I haven't really explored their earlier works. That said, what I'll list are my favorites, but there's definitely a lot of stuff that's worth hearing too. Not a big fan when they simplify their sound like the colab with Atavist which is pretty boring and pointless. I like them when it's a colossal sound, ethereal female vocals and hints of melody. So that's reflected in my choices. Not as oppressive as Angelic Process, or varied in song writing, but just as good, if not better-but a different brand of drone.

If going by MA standards, Caspian's and Perplexed_Sjel's reviews are the way to go (usually), so just see what they've rated highly.

I think they have most of their stuff on Bandcamp http://nadja.bandcamp.com/

My favorite Nadja albums are

Bliss Torn From Emptiness (rerecorded)
Most absorbing and ethereal album. Much more Ambient, but one of my favorite albums ever.

Touched (rerecorded)
Amazing album too, more "doom" elements, but still droney and overwhelming

Truth Becomes Death
Same as Touched. "Bug/Golem" is one of my favorite Nadja songs

Eps/splits

Long Dark Twenties
(much better than the version that's on When I see the Sun...)

Christ Send Light
Great noisy guitar drone track with Black Boned Angel. Catchy, emotional, and great.

This actually reminds me of some of Neurosis' side-projects. Not bad and it has some very interesting textures, but it's not my thing. Thanks anyway.

Looking for general post-metal stuff with clean(and maybe harsh) vocals, but It can be instrumental as well I guess. I like bands like We Made God, Caves of Glass, Two Winters Only, *shels, Jesu, The Angelic Proces, etc. I've seen the words sludge, doom, and industrial kind of thrown in along with these kinds of bands as well. I also wouldn't mind the post-black stuff like Lantlos either. Thanks

If you like Jesu and the Angelic Process check out Touched and Truth Becomes Death by Nadja.

Finding stuff like Lantlos with clean vocals might be more difficult. Alcest, Amersouers (sp), etc would be fruitful. Non clean vocals I'd suggest Deafheaven.

left field suggestions -

Urfaust. Black metal with droning quality. Really powerufl clean vocals. Amazing band.

Wreck and Reference. Mixture of drone, industrial, post-punk, black metal. Great and unique band.

For anyone curious about how far back it's possible to trace crossovers of metal and that depressive/shoegaze sound that is so popular today, I came across this one in my collection today; The obscure UK band Hybernoid and their 1994 cd 'The Last Days Begins?'. Check this out:

I loved Hybernoid, they were such a great band - a unique blend of industrial, Doom/Death, tribal crust punk and goth. The various EPs they released were also excellent if you can find them.

Interesting stuff. On a similar note, anyone know anything that sounds like this Forgotten Woods track? I absolutely love it but wouldn't know what the hell to call it or similar artists. Recs don't have to be instrumental.

Funny thing is that this one has been collecting dust in my collection for years. I remember I didn't know what the hell to make of it when I bought it in the mid 90's. Now, many years later, I can definitely hear something in it I totally missed back then - not saying I'm a particular big fan of those metal/shoegaze/post-punk bands.

Ulver's always getting compared to Coil, something that Garm doesn't like talking about. I myself love this era of Ulver, but have never gotten into Coil. Check them out though.

Maybe a bit closer to Manes, but bizarre and unconventional too, you might dig Anubi.

I'm looking for generally weird albums. Not quirky weird in a Primus or Tom Waits kind of deal, but rather Free Improve like Supersilent, or whatever you call Psychedellic Folk/ Drone stuff like Sunburned Hand of the Man.
