Looking for quality bands with clean vocals in Finnish. I've been studying the language for two years now and listening to music helps words stick in my vocabulary. I already know and like Viikate, but I'm pretty ignorant on Finnish trad or thrash metal, and so many BM/DM bands sing in English. Auttako minulle?

Verjnuarmu and Viikate are my favorites.

Kilpi (=Shield), may have clearest vocals, trad-metal Tuli, vesi, ilma ja maa

Teräsbetoni (=Steelconcrete), Manowaresque metal Taivas lyö tulta

I think these bands have are the most understandable in terms of language, and music is ok also.

from thrash i suggest Stam1na Valtiaan uudet vaatteet,

And Rytmihäiriö Koska Saatana sanoo niin.

along the same lines as stam1na: mokoma - some of the lyrics are semi-growling thrash screams (and some cleans, often in the choruses), but 99% is perfectly intelligible for a native at last

verjnuarmu is kind of a bad example (or a very good one, depending on how you look at it) as their vocals are in the rather odd dialect of savo, and most of the time sound quite forced in the context of metal vocals

for black metal, with intelligible finnish lyrics there's mustan kuun lapset

also check out kuoleman galleria - bm vocals, but again perfectly understandable

sotajumala is quite a big death metal act that has finnish vocals

Lyijykomppania - doomy heavy metal. All the band's lyrics are in Finnish as far as I know.
KLV - did a split with Viikate. Maybe you knew that? Not all the songs sound like this, with clean intelligible vocals, but at least the first half of the compilation Niin Musta On Maa should work.

Umbra Nihil is a doom metal band. From what I remember, most of their stuff is clean vocals, though in this song things sound a little fucked up.

I don't know how intelligible the lyrics are because I don't speak Finnish, but you might want to look into Sarcofagus's album Motorbirds, although I think originally it wasn't planned to be released as Sarcofagus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzqryu5vvbw

I don't know what your musicals tastes are (I don't personally find it too poppy), but Katra's first album was in Finnish, the second album was actually just an English version of the first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVrv3NkFmpk

sorry.
I don't speak Finnish (I really should've said as much), I just always listen to both the aforementioned bands together--they have similar heavy-style vocals, which I assumed would be mutually comprehensible (in contrast to growls/screams).

how about Routasielu? loved their album.

or hell, how dumb of me...what about Korpiklaani? some of their songs are in Finnish, some English.

Also not really metal, but at times gets very close, if the quality of their lyrics in Finnish is anywhere near what they sing in English, I think Indica would be worth listening to in Finnish.

kotiteolisuus is one of my favorites but like napero's review states they got considerably less worthwhile after the +-o single

I guess Haive vocals could be at least partially understandable but if Finnish as your mother tongue:

And the most obvious band was bypassed by everybody here... Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus basically opened the floodgates for metal in Finnish, and has the clearest available voice possible:

And a Candlemass cover to make it more familiar:
