Greetings to all metalheads,

I am a student currently pursuing music theories and this is a pre-liminary survey required for my 1st semester research paper. It's a basic listening pattern survey of the masses.
It would be really helpful for me if I get a good response which will feed into my research paper. As I want to be a musicologist, I will be preparing many more such surveys of which this is the first one. Thank you all for your time and all your responses will be greatly appreciated.

I wasn't too surprised to see so many vote for Anaal Nathrakh.

I noticed some trolls entering shit like Slipknot etc as well.

You could improve your survey in many ways though. Ah well, glad to have helped.

I can't quite remember all the formal procedures of effective market research like likert scales etc. Read up on them. Your survey should have a flow. I didn't feel that while filling yours up. And in some cases create certain bounded variables (ranges for values) instead of relying on the person filling it up. Also, try to quantify as much as possible.

The second question is hard.

Edit: And I answered it with an album because I'm a moron.
Edit2: fixed

Aahh i get it what you mean, but i would like to clarify that this is not a statistical market survey where I would be needing bound variables and exact values. It would be easier if i say what this survey will be providing me with, so here it goes (in brief), like how many people like to store digital formats in a PC rather than collecting vinyls, CDs etc. or, in general which genre people find to be heavy / soft. Stuff like that, so you see the exact value is not that much of a necessity to me.
But if my questions seem sloppy then I am really sorry :( this is my 1st official survey lol, but thanks for the input, i will keep it in mind for my future surveys :)

No problem at all...you can answer anything you want (song name, album, band). As it is I am doing a search of all the bands / albums that I haven't heard, from the results (heavy and soft, both), then listening to the songs to be more accurate in my paper. So, its all fair :)

Is this survey intended to be metal only? Assuming from the favorite genre question, it isn't. If that's the case you should probably post the survey on some non-metal forums as well because almost all of those favorite genres are metal.

Also, I did answer with Anaal Nathrakh as well. :)

Well, initially it was not intended to be a metal only survey, so i did post it out on facebook and mailed it to few people on my mailing list. Since I post it on MA, well....as you can see MA has a force to be reckoned with. But I have enough time to later post it on some non-metal forum if the need rises, or i might turn it into a metal survey for my paper ( my professor is pretty lenient, i hope he won't mind) :)

Thanks for participating :)

I filled it as well but I have to agree the methodology is lacking.

"heavy" and "soft" can mean literally anything to anyone and nothing to some.

As well, tapping into a metal forum to ask people what kind of music is their favorite is something you just don't do. It's like, the basics of surveying. That would be like going to a conservative rally and asking people who they're gonna vote for.

The goal of a survey is to collect hard data. It's complicated enough extrapolating results from that, but becomes pretty useless if the survey itself is too subjective and the methodology suspect.

Done. It's definitely a cool little survey. I seem to be part of the very small minortity who don't listen to music while doing other things. I guess it's because of my tendency to get completely absorbed into the music I'm listening to. I'm afraid I would never get any work done if I did...

Ok, you got me. I'm listening to music right now.

So many troll answers. And yeah, heaviest is so entirely subjective you're not going to see a trend form.

I can't remember the name of a drone/ambient artist I listened to a bit of a few years back, so I can't answer softest.

And it hurts me to call heaviness fast and blasty, heaviness is slow and crushing. Heaviness is doom!

I agree that the heaviest things are usually slower. For example, death metal slams are much heavier than tremolo-picked passages. I answered Nile, since it's both very heavy and one of the fastest metal bands.

Honestly, "heaviness" for me usually tops out with speed rather than crushingness. Wormphlegm are heavy as balls but I still don't think they're as heavy as Torsofuck or Enmity.

It's hard to answer such general questions... But I tried to do it somehow. There you go ;)

Answered and now I feel bad because I couldn't think of a good enough answer for the softest music I listen to.

By "you have listened to" do you mean stuff that I actually am/was into and have deliberately listened to, or any stuff I've been exposed to at least once? The phrasing suggests the latter (to me, at least), but only the former makes any sense or could be any useful to anyone. I mean, if just one listen counts, at best you'll get an idea of how many listeners are rather curious and how many keep strictly away from the extremes. My guess is that very few of us, if any, would be in a position to honestly cite anything metal as the softest music they ever listened to. Similarly, if to a lesser extent, who around these parts has never given even a brief try to deliberately, stupidly noisy garbage, even for educational purposes? So, okay, I'll assume that what you want to know is what's the heaviest and softest stuff I actually give (or used to give) a shit about, then.

Okay, filled out.
