Ok, so, first of all Hello Everyone, this is my first post at the Archives!

Any way, down to business, I love almost all kinds of metal, I'm more into Black metal than anything but I can't seem to find the right music to wake up to so to speak. The normal kinds of metal I listen to (black) is just a little too harsh for listening to in the morning. So I need some recs on mellower, less grating bands to get my day started to! Something a little inspiring but not like over the top. Hope that makes sense! Thanks in advance guys.

Sentenced's "Amok" could be sth for you. But of course it works to any other time of the day, too.
Not too fast, yet the right dose of aggression, also a bit of mellow melancholy but with lots of, well, "drive"?
Listen to it - it's great!

Thanks for the Recs guys!
Joppek, thanks but I'm not really looking for funeral doom, I want something mellow but slightly uplifting at the same time. I guess what I'm looking for metal thats not "BLARGEFAS SATAN ASDFNINANS GORE" just something to get me up in the mornings and going before class.
I loved Sentenced after I checked them out, thanks man!

No offense, but if you're looking for metal to wake up to, shouldn't you be seeking the harshest, most grating and abrasive things imaginable so that you'll instantly be startled awake?

I think the best way to start the day is with rock n roll/heavy rock like The Sword, Hellacopters, Airbourne, The Devils Blood, Turbonegro, The Datsuns, Kyuss and shit like that. Not harsh but it gets you pumped, idk why but i like to feel like a rockstar when i go out (?) i also love Nightingale (Dan Swano project) early works or Jerry Cantrell´s Degradation Trip 1 and 2 (this is a little heavier than the rest) but you are looking for something smoother, maybe stuff like Woods V by Woods of Ypress (a bit too much depressing to begin the day with xD) or something more acustic like Ulver´s Kveldssanger or Musk Ox (a folk project by one of the guys from Agalloch)?

Devin Townsend does a great job with this. First two tracks of his album Infinity.

I don't know if it's the kind of stuff you'd like at all, but it's gotten me out of bed content enough and it's very uplifting.

How about some post-rock kind of stuff? Junius, Klimt 1918, Les Discrets and the like.

you're welcome :) So, then go on and have a try with The Black Legaue's first albums. It's the later
band of the Sentenced vocalist Tarneli Jarva who left Sentenced after the "Amok" album.
TBL's albums "Ichor", "Utopia AD" and the "Doomsday Sun EP" continue in the vein of "Amok".

Here are a few songs to check out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTpGu6wGSXo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IX44H1e-Ys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scAwNOIUuYs

Also seconding Devin Townsend. While "Infinity" has some of thoe mellow tracks it also has it's
weirder moments. Other Devin albums like "Accelerated Evolution", "Terria", "Addicted" and the
masterpiece "Biomech" (under the name of Ocean Machine" are filled with more, well, less-weird
stuff. Listen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z_UJ0_biJw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb3KFD3dkBg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpfPpxjEhb8

However maybe it's too warm/mellow/normal for your taste and lacks too much harshness...

Amorphis works well for me, they have a very clear and 'fresh' sound to my ears. Plus they're melodic and catchy, so it all works together nicely.

I'll second (third?) Devin Townsend too. Personally I don't really like his music, but I think it should fit what you're looking for.

OPETH - To Bid You Farewell

First time I ever heard this song was just after waking up, still lying in bed. I have never felt more at peace than during those 11 minutes.

Haha I was about to say something like this. I usually like some thrashy OSDM first thing in the morning to really get me going. However for a more relaxed wake up some atmospheric black metal or traditional doom would be the way to go. Something along the lines of Negura Bunget or Pagan Altar.

I prefer not having a seizure while puking when I woke up!

I usually don't listen to music when I wake up, I wait for when I leave the house to take the metro to blast some music and it's normally what I want to hear at the moment.

THIS!

I used to keep a "metal" alarm but I never used to react well to it. So now I keep a standard beep alarm which can get annoying but it does its job. I do the same like what Metantoine said. I listen to music immediately when I step out of the house (ie. if I'm heading outdoors). I usually put on some pumping thrash/crossover/hardcore punk songs.

If that's not your cup of tea, I could suggest a couple of bands which might suit you - Drudkh, Agalloch, Old Silver Key, Alcest, Amesoeurs.

Thanks guy, unfortunately I've heard most these bands and I've come to the conclusion that I should probably do like Metantoine and listen to music after I leave the house so I can be ready to listen to the usual metal I listen to.
