Hi, I have been thinking for sometime about getting into Rush. I like their most famous song, "Tom Sawyer", especially "what you say about his company..."-part. I also like parts of the song YYZ, but I am not really into what I have heard of the rest of that album. So what I want to know is where you guys recommend I should start with this band!? Knowing that this band is pretty well liked on this board I thought you guys could help me out!

If you like Tom Sawyer and YYZ then I'd say start with Moving Pictures, as both those songs are from that album. It;s a really great album (my personal favourite). After that, check out 2112, Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres.

 Read the full OP, he says he listened to the rest of it and didn't like it.

I was raised on A Farewell To Kings, so maybe I am biased, but I have to recommend that as well.

And then Power Windows, if only to help you decide right now whether or not you like "Synth Rush", which you should. Cos it's great.

Man, you're gonna get every Rush fan in here telling you to start with everything. The thing about Rush is that their style evolves a lot over the decades. You could start at the beginning for some old fashioned Led Zeppelin inspired Rock n Roll. 2112 is where they really started to head in their own direction, and my opinion is that they hit their stride in the Permanent Waves through Power Windows era. The 1990s don't produce anything memorable, though I kind of like Test for Echo.

Modern Rush is three guys that just want to play Rock n Roll again. They've done some of their best stuff in the last 10 years.

If you don't like Moving Pictures, you don't like Rush. I'm not even joking. Moving Pictures IS Rush, so how can you like them if you don't like most of it?
Hope I don't come across as rude. :P

Rush is many things, they can't be defined by their most popular album. I can understand not liking MP a lot even though I like it, I prefer 2112 and Hemispheres myself, they're heavier and more progressive albums.

I would suggest you do the discography deal, as in start with the earliest prog hard rock styled albums and see the evolution. Listen to the first 2 records, let them grow on you and them move to phase2 and ...so on and so forth.

This is NOT a best of kind of band. If it was , you would have temples of syrinx on repeat.

always the best way to start with a band is with its first album and then full discography after. Also the first Rush album is killer!!.

I'd go with the people saying start from the beginning.

Hmm. I'm biased towards A Farewell To Kings. My favorite album by them. Great production, musicianship, and strong songwriting overall.
