CHRIST BEHEADED (U.S.) "Open the Gates of Hell" CD review by Goatsden

Image

By Goatsden

The debut 5-song EP from an Indianapolis, Indiana black metal act, "Purgatory" begins things with in a blur of antagonism and an almost Napalm Death grindcore tempo and vibe. The title track is more typical tortured black metal with an old-school feel (dig the solo in the middle). "Decomposed" has elements of death metal within the confines of black metal. Production is solid, and this 5-song, 22-minute set more than satisfies the need for more metal.

But who's really counting? "Open The Gates Of Hell" is a strong showing from some skilled metallic warriors who take no prisoners. This EP (newly reissued) was recorded back in 2008, so it seems the band is on hiatus or split. Here's to a follow-up album.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by Goatsden

Image

By Goatsden

5 songs and 14 minutes of rolling black thrash metal thunder from an Indiana group. This EP was originally released in 2010, and the band have since realized a full-length LP, which I've not heard. Regardless, this is a solid piece of evil metal madness.

The opening cut, "Die By The Ax" is a beast of unbridled mayhem, with witchy vocals and a tough thrash exterior. Imagine if Motorhead careened headfirst into Darkthrone, and you'd be close to Maax's ferocious sound. The other cuts, including the blurry and subtle "Go Fuck Yourself", echo this sentiment. The title track is a pure drunken punk/black metal crossover that is as dirty and smelly as can be, which is a good thing. The only thing holding up this brief EP is the muddied mix, in which the lower end seems bottomed out. Nonetheless, these guys bring it in an authentic way.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.rottinghill.at

Image

By Wolfgang

Swedish band "Daemonicus" has existed for more than six years. Founded in 2006, they threw to 2007 already three demos in the round, which was followed in 2009 the album "Host Of Rotten Flesh" and 2010 EP "11th Hour". I have heard of this formation yet, but I am very curious to see what it has to offer. After all, were the research that the quintet but ordinary fabric delivers, so the expectation takes corresponding form. direct the positives first: In the opening of the album is waived pseudosymphonischen synthesizer pudding and different intros, but on the rolling Star Meet the opener "A Work Of Art Dead" limited. Also subsequently was without excessive equipment, samples, synthesizers and the like that the whole absolutely to property. Quickly felt himself makes the typical sound that is known by the same country-style colleagues already. This can, in view of the amount of sound the same genre groups after very little innovation, but I feel it in terms of the compositional outlined suitable not only, but also see no good reason to make something so functional amend. If it fits, then it fits precisely, and it's not like when they introduced "Daemonicus" Death Metal in Sweden. instrumentation and production I see in "Dead Work" to a great success. The drums are crisp, the distorted guitars and the bass booms fat then. The vocals are kept in typical style and, through a healthy amount of variation for enough variety to not get bored. The overall package is a true death metal wall that is created here, coupled with melodious, inspired solos. "Daemonicus" refer in their play on the classic death metal pack earlier days, this bag of old school stuff but must in a robe that did not hide so well before modern works of other artists in this drawer. Skilfully was a beautiful and functional bridge today in "those days" created. But as much as it sounds like the most classic of classic death metal, there are always moments when specifying for me unpredictable riffs or change the tone. Thus, it remains known not continuous, but know through various outlier variety and entertainment to worry. The balancing act is done and the end result is in my opinion a very good one. Me as professing non-death metal fanatics brought the scene back a little closer and adds a whole bunch of favorites. big beat around the bush, in the present case does not make sense. "Daemonicus" have to "dead work" set out an entertaining album, which contains ten engaging, entertaining and well-crafted songs that definitely make you want more. I personally will probably not as fast as the disk again on the shelf and would like genre friends lay to heart, to look at the work more accurate. It should also be noted that I have a "I'm positively surprised" bonus point just throw on top of it '. (After all, Christmas is coming, too!) Tracklist:
01 A Dead Work Of Art
02 The Grandeur Of Total Termination
03 Embracing Her Remains
04 We Feast On Your Flesh
05 The Hymn Of Ubo Sathla
06 From Dead Alive To Life
07 Blood Red November (MDXX)
08 Inhabited
09 Nothing But Death
10 As Extinction Came

Rating: 9/10

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "System of Nature" DIGI CD & "It All Fades" CD EP reviews by http://www.heavyhardmetalmania.net

Image

By Pedro Ribeiro

In the beautiful lands of Southern Sweden where the cold of winter is felt and the white covers the branches of naked trees a dark force remains in its shelter and waits silently like a predator watches its prey until the opportune moment to release its claws against the ignorance of man.

In the middle of 2008 Landskrona gave birth to the hungry beast called THE GARDNERZ, a dommy death metal band formed by Wihelm Lindh (the man behind the guitar). With the desire to spread his own metal as blood running in his veins he initiated the demand for artists that could integrate shrewdly into the dark energy he intended to liberate and so in the late 2008 Francisco Martín (bass wielder) joined the loud force and that was how the first steps of the band started to leave a trace, with the debut album taking shape. A longtime friend of Francisco, Juan Pablo fitted well in the formation and was recruited to do the drums (currently he is no longer part of the band) and after a long time of searching for a vocalist Niclas Ankarbranth shattered voice stepped in to the picture.

This musical monster is very versatile and blends various components of death metal with a slower and brutal doom but they don´t fully fit that category taking their music even further to a more diversified path that makes them unique. With a slow and nasty sound of heavy metal full of distortion and catchy clean notes that compose sorrowful and gloomy melodies, they mix technique with simplicity to create a vast soundscape and fresh touch. Lyrically they deal with philosophical ideas and the strange ways of Man in life specially the hypocrisy, greed and creeds of human being, the fallacies of religion, consumerism and how insignificant events shapes a Man´s entire life.

THE GARDNERZ dark energy was finally unleashed… the debut album “The System of Nature” was mastered by Dan Swanö at his Unisound Studio and was released on the 20th of September 2011 on digipack CD through Abyss Records and is also available as gatefold LP by Mechanix Records and downloads through Digmetalworld.

For a debut album “System of Nature” was very well worked and presents us a bone breaker sound with technical, catchy and heavy riffs that sometimes gives place to a cleaner string experience that fills the music with sad and dark melodies. The songs of this album fit in the death/doom category but in my opinion there is a progressive sound present because they mutate their style so many times during this 12 track work (two of them are covers of the bands VULCANO and WINTER) that is hard to say that they are pure death with a gloomy flourish. The guitar offers many techniques and styles with slow, medium pace and fast rhythms, brutal heavy distortions and clean phrases, fast short solos, complex and strong riffs and simpler lines. The bass is easily audible not remaining beneath the other instruments and follows the music with splendor also having its moments of focus with simple solo lines but I think it adds nothing special or particular to the music. Niclas vocals are profound; he uses a heavy growl and a devilish voice that exudes exceptionally the messages of the songs. The drums are very powerful and create that brutal background with a slow rhythm that sometimes turns into a complex frenzy of death metal.

In general the album “System of Nature” was well conceived with songs that are pretty good but with others that fall into oblivion. The most positive factor in this work was that they created their own sound that automatically separated them from comparisons and gave them a highlight in the metal scene. In a way they have shown that they were capable of doing more and one year later they ended up impressing…

Image

After the release of the debut the response of the metal community was very positive and the followers of the band started to grow. This of course was an extra boost to keep the band in the right direction and the THE GARDNERZ started working on new material to unleash their tremendous metal.

In 2011 a new drummer, Vedran Bencic, was recruited, and just after a few months of rehearsing the new songs the band decided to record a mini album. . The recording started in early 2012 and yielded the "It All Fades" mini album containing six doom and death filed tracks. Drums were recorded at Armageddon Studio, Osijek, Croatia. Guitars and bass at Funky Cat Studio in Landskrona, Sweden. Vocals at Ninja Studios in Malmö, Sweden. Mixed and Mastered by Cristian Rodríguez Lunecke at 15Hz Studio Santiago, Chile.

The sound of the band hasn´t suffered many alterations with the mini album and somehow the idea of constructing a 36 minutes EP was clever because it brought a simple and small but amazing work with superb songs and in particular one of my favorite covers of Darkthrone´s “Transsilvanian Hunger” to which they gave a special and unique touch, turning this song into a folky, beautiful and melancholic ballad with the orgasmic voice of Paulina Strihavka. Definitely I cannot think of any better tribute to Norwegian black metal than this spectacular cover and THE GARDNERZ really nailed it.

They remained in the dommy death metal scene reminding sometimes of My Dying Bride but with their own sound and with compositions that evolved with a stronger character with catchier and heavier songs and a much savory progression with all the instruments in harmony. This time around the atmosphere was much more intense and being easier to capture the feelings that “It All Fades” transpires. At technical level they have shown that simplicity can also become complex with the use of simple doom phrases intercalated with clean melodies and a more technical death metal that not even once during the mini album gets boring. This was due primarily due to the maturation of the strings compositions that were outstanding with really dommy lines changing to catchy death metal lines especially in the song “Don´t look back”.

The vocals are also a strong reference in this album, they didn´t stick with huge and intense growls, instead they use a vast spectrum of styles singing with roaring intensity, clean vocals, and a more thrash type of singing (loud and clear with harshness) and as I said before there is also a strong guest vocalist, the inspiring voice of Paulina that gives a beautiful texture to the cover.

“It All Fades” has shown that after all there was still plenty to hear and to headbang to…

THE GARDNERZ cultivated their sound with brilliance and I just really hope they continue to do works like this or even better. Hail to THE GARDNERZ!

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by cosmosgaming

Image

By Chris Dahlberg

Sometimes it is scary to sit back and think about just how much death metal Sweden has produced. Not only is the country one of the originators of the style, but every month there seems to be newcomers that appear out of nowhere. Daemonicus isn’t a complete newcomer as they have been around since 2006, but their sophomore effort Deadwork is the first time I had come across the band. There’s a decent amount of variation between songs that strikes a balance between the old-school sound and slightly more melodic elements, but the material isn’t able to make enough of an impact to truly stand out.
Deadwork should feel familiar to anyone that is an avid Swedish death metal listener, as the instrumentalists of Daemonicus have the basics of the genre down perfectly. The first few tracks are great examples of this, as the tone of the guitars and mid-tempo chug fit the style are exactly what listeners would expect. But after a few songs the group makes it clear that they don’t want to imitate the old-school Swedish sound for an entire album, opting to head in a direction that favors melodic leads. The mixture of these two styles works well as it keeps the band from merely repeating the same formula over and over again, but at the same time there aren’t any leads that really make individual songs stand out. As a result Deadwork is an album that is consistent and able to offer some different ideas, but never truly blows listeners away. The production values deserve a mention though, as the sound has the right mix between noisy, dirty tonality and cleaner tones that lets the melody break through.

Singer Stefan Hegstrom has a slightly higher pitch than some of the other Swedish death metal vocalists, but this suits the slight melodic edge that the instrumentals present. Although he may not hit any extremely deep growls, Hegstrom’s scream/growl has enough distortion and intensity to be worth paying attention to. His performance is able to maintain this level of energy for the entirety of Deadwork, and this keeps the album consistently heavy hitting. What’s interesting is that the production and mixing don’t overemphasize the vocals as is common in this genre, instead letting them co-exist with the instrumentals and letting the two elements compete for the listener’s attention. Considering how often the vocals overpower everything else, this actually works quite well and creates a nice balance.

Daemonicus is decent and clearly know how to perform this particular style, but their songs don’t quite manage to stick in your memory. If you’re looking for some competent Swedish death metal Deadwork still isn’t a bad option, just don’t expect any particular moments to stay with you. These guys have only been a band for six years and this is their second full length album, so with some more growth they could become a viable competitor in the crowded genre.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by Possessed Magazin

Image

By meden

Ah, it's always nice to know where we are headed. Player on, the first riff heard and already knew the musical journey to Sweden. The band itself even comes from there, not surprisingly. Since 2006, one gambles together now. 3 demos, a Ep and a full LNGTH and now provides you with "Dead Works" from the second album. Quickly viewed the Members and, look a look, more unknown people. The boys gambled previously with the bands "Sanoty of Impiety" and "Knife in Christ." Both are completely unknown to me. What gives us because now the second album. Of course, Death Metal Swedish nature is clear and already it is clear that I gefällt.Beide camp served, both Gothenburg and Stockholm. Both old and new Dark Tranquility Grave grazed, but then you move more in the melodic Swedish Death, but it's also very good to the cause. However, one can not keep up with the big definitely the scene, still what is missing, especially since at the time as young heroes like Deserted Fear or Revel In Flesh meet. These need to be measured, and since it does not come ran. Nevertheless, the songs are not bad, of course, make them happy and Sweden fans can strike without hesitation. Interesting is the kind of song that gives the whole a small blackigen touch. Up-and mid-tempo parts characterize the daylight and the very varied and not evil. On Sweden's just always dependable. One might think that have found a particular gene. However you create with this album yet jumped to the top of Sweden!

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by Metal Bulletin zine

Image

By Metal Bulletin zine

This is a reissue of the 2004 album, which I never got to hear, actually.

Metal hippies that they are, The Gates of Slumber sounds like the albums they love “Master of Reality” and “Volume 4” by Black Sabbath, and the slow-motion crawling riffs of doom, the stoner-rock vocals (a bit hippy Ozzy-ish, of course), the steady-beat drumming and 70s vibe. During the guitar solos, one clearly hears the “hole” in the song: the drums and bass take to the forefront, while the guitar noodling is taking place. How’s that for 70s style?!

Sometimes the pace might pick up to an uptempo beat, but by and large the rhythm is slow or midpaced, where the riffs take center stage. The heaviness is in abundance, and the melody is kept restrained, to maintain a somewhat rougher, stoner-rock doom metal feel.

This one’s for doomsters, 70s/classic rock enthusiasts, Black Sabbath/Saint Vitus/Cirith Ungol fans, and for those into stoner rock. http://www.slumberingsouls.com

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.angrymetalguy.com

Image

By Steel Druhm

I keep waiting with dread for that dark day to finally find me. That day where my taste for Swedish retro death falters and I tire of the endless wave of throwback acts. As a world-renowned supporter of Swedish fish and retro death, I’ve embraced pretty much every album that crawled from the muck in the past few years. While some were clearly better than others, I’ve been more than content to ride the crusty death train with the bloodstained wheels right into the grave of the dismembered entombed. That brings us to Deadwork, the second album by Sweden’s Daemonicus. Keeping their national heritage tucked close to their black hearts, these chaps pull out every page of the Left Hand Path and Like an Everflowing Stream playbook. Yes, its 1990 all over again and you will be bludgeoned by the buzzing sound of nasty, old school, mid-tempo death. What’s more, these guys really know their stuff and execute the style like old pros. Since I eat this stuff like bacon and beer flavored gummy bears, I’m obviously digging it muchly. What truly surprises me is, in this day and age, after SO MUCH of this stuff has been regurgitated in essentially the same form, it’s somehow still viable and enjoyable. Between this album and the newest Blood Mortized, it even sounds, dare I say it, fresh and new. How the fuck is that possible? Steel Druhm knows not.

Bursting with vigor and copious nutsack, “A Dead Work of Art” is pure, old timey Swede-death. Those hulking Sunlight Studio riffs are the weapons Daemonicus wields as they properly kick your ass with well done, mid-tempo chaos that feels thick as a brick and heavy as hell. Relentless tracks like “Grandeur of Total Termination” and “Embracing Her Remains” are as Dismember-y as you could ever want. They effortlessly hit on all the classic Swedish touchstones and even throw in a bit of Gothenburg flavor at times (but less so than the latest Evocation did). The riffs tear and rend at you like poorly fed hyenas and the vocals snarl and grunt along like a graveyard choir. It’s simple, effective and exactly what you expect to hear from this style.

Things get even better with the cavorting and careening riffs in “We Feast on Your Flesh” (which has more than a little old Unleashed flavor in the riff patterns). The guitars just grab you by the throat and command respect. Though not original in the least, this is a top shelf example of the genre and why it somehow remains timeless. The extra creepy vibe and blackish riff flavor makes “The Hymn of Udo Sathia” stand out, and the oddly sing-along chorus is a weird, but fun surprise. Grinders like “From Alive to Dead Life” and “Nothing but Death” round things out with extra ponderous riffery and gut-busting death sneers

While Deadwork has some killer tracks, it can be a bit uneven. The best cuts come on the first half and things do drop a bit as it plays out. That said, only “Blood Red December MDXX” comes up completely short with an awkward style and unbecoming transitions.

Deadwork joins a long line of tasty throwbackers because of the riffs from P.O. Wester and Jorgen Persson. They unpack the borrowed Dismem-Entomb-Unleash licks and throw them unceremoniously at all who pass by. Most of their creations have a plethora of energy and aggression and they keep things hyperactive, though this isn’t the thrashiest of albums. They also impart a good amount of melody while keeping the heavy-o-meter set to “liquify.” Stefan Hagstrom has a nicely vicious snarl and sounds suitably evil and undead. As a group, they know what is expected of them and they deliver it like a pizza with extra lung meat.

The sound is a successful mix of raw and professional. The guitars are as big and menacing as they should be and there’s some danger to the music. It’s a bit less raw than the classic 90s albums, but it never veers too close to the polish and shine of modern recordings.

Completely bereft of originality, innovation and new ideas, Daemonicus is yet another proud guardian of the retro death sound. This is one of the better attempts at the style this year and Deadwork is a suitable companion piece to the new Blood Mortized. I don’t know why I keep enjoying the same album over and over again, but when it sounds like this, I can’t help. Steel Druhm is a slave to fashion and style. That album cover however, is not.

Rating: 3.5/5.0 — I don’t Dismember saying there was too much retro death!

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) "Evighetens Dårar" DIGI CD review by http://www.angrymetalguy.com

Image

By Angry Metal Guy

Sometimes reviews are short because you don’t have anything to say about a band. I mean, something just doesn’t wake that ire in you because it sucks, but isn’t really great enough to really rant about. This is a problem when you set yourself informal word limits for every review, and this is even more of a problem when the issue with the record is that it’s too fucking good to even warrant much of a review, per se. So before the jump, even, let me say this: what are you waiting for? Buy this fucking record.

OK, so maybe you don’t trust your local Angry Metal Guy as much as you should (because you should); so I guess I’ll motivate my arguments a bit here. See, you should buy this record because this is exactly how death metal should be performed. This is nothing but pure, balls-to-the-walls death metal in its best form. And what more would you expect from Lord K. Philipson of The Project Hate; Jörgen Sandström from Grave and Vicious Art and with the seriously mighty Tobias Gustafsson from Vomitory behind the kit?

And you get exactly what you should expect: 28 minutes and 11 aggressive tracks with a distinct old school vibe and a touch of grind that have no extra fat. This is simply astonishingly heavy riff after crushingly heavy riff and it works into your veins and “makes you wanna rage” to quote an old (and silly) song by Sacred Reich. Every song on here is excellent. There should be no doubt of this. Going between brutal and simple and technical and stunning (but not techy, just technically interesting and/or melodic) these guys don’t misfire for the entire 28 minutes.

Oh, and did I mention that Dan Swano mastered this (and made it sound like a ton of fucking bricks)?

So yeah, this review is short. Because it is obvious to me that you should go the fuck out and buy this record. It comes out in a digipack format from Abyss Records in the USA and there’s gotta be a European release somewhere out there and if not, you should head over to Torture Division‘s website and download the three Evighetens DÃ¥rar demos and donate to the cause. Then after you buy the CD you should buy some merch, maybe a t-shirt or something. And then you should tell all your friends to buy it. And you should insult their manhood if they don’t. Because this is yet another example of the inborn Swedish death metal superiority.

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by karametals

By Raitis Same

Soundtreks end of the world!

(Writing Dethecrator) Evaluating this year's Latvian metalražu, one of the main candidates for the patrons of metal on at least one of the prize categories will diseas debut album "Holy Wrath", which was probably the farthest boasts a printing site - American Publishers' Abyss Records. "

Even before his debut CD release dise was well-known unit of the Latvian stages, as well as all of the songs heard in concerts, so interesting to listen to, Imants Vovers (drums), Dmitry Bulavskis (guitar), Alex Makarov (bass) and Sergey Stavro (vocal) turned their eight compositions in the studio whole. The first line of lyrics can be a bit atsedinat experienced listeners: "There's no turning back / World is turning black!" - Either the banality starts with the album? But the energy that comes from the same instrumentalists and singer, instantly makes the following a strong start to the songs! mood of the album's title track and then listening to the songs "Sinner", "Insanity", "Son of the Winter" - and through the "Witch" and "Agony", it becomes clear why diseas music is so hard to be characterized. On the one hand - in terms of severity, it is old, right mironmetals, on the other hand - the music is slow flowing and changing, so there are many shebang ("sludge") elements, while the rhythm section is playing d-beat pieces. Group members for their own categorization shrugs - Pjotr ??they have little interest in it, but adds that it took them some time until the match for Publishing: The above few wished to dise game «clean» mironmetalu, while others - typical of the "sludge , "and the like. album cover motif of Mexican artist Gragoth driven 21st December theme: crimson fire bullets beat upon the earth cracked, dedzinadamas and black smoke kupinadamas. The visual motif of IN FLAMES in tune with the songs "Come Clarity" video, which featured the same fireball flying across the desert standing Swedes heads. However dise artwork is not a paraphrase of the visual symbols, but rather a continuation of thought - "Holy Wrath" cover shows what happens when a heavenly punishment ™ is finished flap through the air and reached Earth. Karametala.lv observers it looked at amortized satellite Downfall, which Vovers answered - free thought each listener's own appraisal!

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by mouthforwar

Image

By Mouth for War

You know, I’m a lucky son of a bitch. No matter how many times I hear that telltale buzz of old school Swedish death metal on a new release, I start to drool with anticipation. It’s a sound I grew up with and, hopefully, a sound my frozen corpse will cling to as the worms come. Of course, there has been some really bad examples of the revival, but the sophomore album from Daemonicus isn’t part of that collective pile.

Deadwork isn’t an overly complex album. It isn’t overly technical in any way, shape or form. But what it is… well it’s packed full of memorable riffing, buzzing groove and burly rhythms just like the old days. Think Dismember and early Entombed, but with a good deal more melody and a relatively clean, modern production. The ten tracks on Deadwork are infectious, bruising and have enough of that old school sensibility to make veteran and new fans alike giddy over the death metal these guys deliver.

Daemonicus start the album off with the solid “A Dead Work of Art” which is packed full of buzzing riffs and head-snapping groove. It’s got a bit of a Bloodbath vibe to it which I’m totally cool with. “The Grandeur of Total Termination” amps up the pace a good deal with pile-driving drums and a more varied vocal delivery and a chorus that you can growl along with. “We Feast on Your Flesh” has got to be one of the more brutal and catchier tracks on the album. It’s also got a bit of an Unleashed (circa Shadows in the Deep) vibe to accompany the monstrous riffs that it’s packed with.

The guys change the pace nicely with the slow and gentle start to “The Hymn of Ubo Sathla” before launching into lurching riffage and pile-driving drums. It’s a killer track that is perfectly placed within the flow of the album. “Inhabited” is an absolute monster of a track as it pummels you senseless right from the start, rarely letting up through its five minute run-time (the last minute of which is reverb and sound bytes). “Nothing But Death” is one of the stronger songs on the disc and carries a nice bit of melody amongst the driving guitars and rhythms shifts.

All in all, Deadwork is another excellent example of what can be done with old school Swedish death metal without bastardizing those bands who pioneered the genre. There’s no aping going on here, just a solid incorporation of timeless influences and a modern take on the style. Daemonicus are now on my radar and I expect these guys to continue to impress with future releases.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Luxi Lahtinen

I gotta admit I really did enjoy the heck out of Serbian melodic Black / Death combo's BANE's 2010 debut studio album, titled "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness". These Serbs' aural assault of DISSECTION-esque and DARK FUNERAL-esque type of Black / Death Metal appealed every nerve cell of mine - and the band's follow-up record, "The Acausal Fire", did that even more to me. "The Acausal Fire" basically continues right from there where they left off on their - in so many satisfying and chilling ways, debut album "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness". This time they, however, have refined their sound even more, paying just a bit more attention to each single part of the songs on their follow-up record, how to get them connected to each other as seamlessly as possible. Also, the use of very underlining harmonies and melodies within their songs has increased quite drastically, the guys' still counting on similar musical approaches that one can find both from DARK FUNERAL's and especially DISSECTION's releases. I would claim that the aforementioned two fine Swedish amalgams of well-ripen evilness have still been the strongest musical grounds for BANE when listening to the whole pompous outcome of "The Acausal Fire". Jon Nödveidt's sharp sense to write some immortal songs, has truly left its mark on BANE, there's not even a slightest doubt about that. On "The Acausal Fire" you can find an endless road of Jon's deep scar marks on BANE's way to make people impressed by their extremely well flowing cavalcade of songs. I don't mind at all if they do sound like the ultimate torch bearers for DISSECTION's musical legacy, because as we all know by now DISSECTION is no more. Therefore it's pretty easy for me to scream from the very top of my lungs 'Thank dog we have a band like BANE...", following loyally the same glorious path that DISSECTION left behind them when ceased to exist. Hence I don't wonder a bit either why BANE even chose to cover DISSECTION's song 'Night's Blood' for this record. At the end of the day it's not even hard to spit it out loud and clear that "The Acausal Fire" is simply one of the most outstanding Black / Death Metal releases of the recent times you can find in today's Metal markets. If you don't believe my shameless praising about this Serbian outfit and especially "The Acausal Fire", then you can always make yourself convinced by checking them out by yourself, right? The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Renato de Filippis

The Gates of Slumber: a magical name for all fans of Lovecraft, and for all the doom! The debut of the American band, sold out for some time, is reprinted with an interesting Bonustrack from the Abyss Records. Let's see the lineup of this album in 2004 that had much less success than they would have deserved. "The Awakening" is the missing link between the Saint Vitus and the occult '70s rock, as demonstrated by the voice of Karl Simonacidissimo solo at the end of the track (which by the way 'crazy' about a minute from the end with a sudden acceleration). The beginning of "The Jury" is so distorted as to suggest the space rock, and the song grows again with an eye to the seventies with long instrumental phrasing, but for once I would not refer to Black Sabbath, but rather the sound of San Francisco. The rapid "The Executioner" shakes the listener numb from the lava of doom of the first five pieces, then we have a three-minute bass solo, with "Blessed Pathway to the Celestial Kingdom," then close the original disc, "The Burial "yes this doom related to English rock 70s and even then - the more attentive if they only realize - to Candlemass. The package includes, as Bonustrack, nearly ten minutes of funereal "The cloacked Figure", definitely the most stuffy and traditional doom of the lot. In short, if you do not have "... the Awakening" I'd say it's time to buy! The new artwork is (of course) by Ken Kelly.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Luxi Lahtinen

Is there ever enough good and muscular, riff-based old school Death Metal around these days? To answer to this question, truly depends on quite a few things actually but if it's done the way this Umeå, Sweden-based 5-piece act DAEMONICUS does it, then I for one, would certainly say 'no'. "Deadwork" is DAEMONICUS' 2nd album already; the guys debuted on their "Host Of Rotting Flesh" in 2009 - and the band has only been around since 2006. Things tend to be developing pretty fast for some bands, I see. In DAEMONICUS' case, simply basing my listening experience solely on their follow-up record "Deadwork", it's good to see things developing somewhat fast, as "Deadwork" is a surprisingly solid and mature effort from these Swedes, offering basically those necessary 'meat & potatoes' but still doing it in a relatively convincing way after all; of the known and familiar Swedish style, I might add. DAEMONICUS' bring out their true roots without any compromises or hesitations, sort of trusting firmly the blood that runs through their veins - every darn blood vessel in the guys' bodies pumping up that of highly Swedish-colored blood that makes something to sound so Swedish - and even more downright and utterly very Swedish, you know. Go and collect a good pocketful of these certain fragments from the heavy soundscapes of such names as GRAVE, ENTOMBED, AMON AMARTH, UNLEASHED, then marinate these aforementioned fragments in question with slices of heavily rolling, BOLT THROWER-ish guitar patterns - and we have something in our hands here that may well sound close to a band like DAEMONICUS is. Brutal. Melodic. Pretty addictive, familiar yet so tempting in its own good way - that's what DAEMONICUS have on offer on "Deadwork". Homework well accomplished, I really don't wanna say more... The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Luxi Lahtinen

The very first thing that grabbed my attention regarding this Swedish Doom / Death Metal outfit called THE GARDNERZ, was a cover of DARKTHRONE's 'Transilvanian Hunger', which is one of the most convincingly written Black Metal songs in my unholy history books of extreme Metal ever. Without having all that needed patience in me, I simply HAD to check it out as my first thing. And... uh, it doesn't sound much like the original grim, pure evilness and darkness-oozing DARKTHRONE song at all, which in this case doesn't mean either THE GARDNERZ should have left that classic Black Metal anthem completely untouched. Actually I am more than happy to say glad they did cover it - and made their own version out of it. THE GARDNERZ gave a twist of their very own to this DARKTHRONE classic, giving the song a beautiful Folk-ish touch, and letting the female vocalist Paulina Strihavka to perform it with her magnificent and fragile voice, supported by acoustic guitars only. Quite a chilling performance from THE GARDNERZ, if you ask me respectively. As for the rest of the content on this relatively lengthy 6-track EP (nearly 36 minutes of music), the Swedes' deathly Doom is throughout pretty mesmerizing altogether, the guys using cleverly yet wisely enough a substantial amount of tempo changes within their songs - like avoiding the deepest traps to sound like your typical, mediocre Death / Doom Metal act, plus taking advantage of some a bit more progressive parts here and there, to make the songs sound richer and just a bit more challenging structure-wise. Vocalist Niclas Ankarbranth is also very capable of convincing all of us with his grunt-ish Death growls, at times reminding of Jeff Hayden (TIMEGHOUL) whose voice I have always admired. I also overall liked the idea of using Paulina's operatic vocal skills in the title track of the EP, 'It All Fades', providing some lightness for the ending of the song - as well as bringing in a well-fitting contrast to the song, next to Niclas' very much opposite, dead limb-heavy and beastly vocal performance. In conclusion out of all this, here's a very enjoyable EP from THE GARDNERZ all in all that should make all of us waiting for the band's 2nd album, which they undoubtedly even have in the works while you are reading this... BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by blog-shinjuku-metal

Image

By blog-shinjuku-metal

2ND Balkans black metal band BANE of Serbia. Beautiful guitar melody properly bleak, dramatic music will continue to expand in the sprint while exchanging reminiscent of the legendary black metal band DISSECTION exactly. Bonus track recorded a cover of "NIGHT'S BLOOD" masterpiece of historical DISSECTION how! While faithful to the original song, it is great to feel able to DISSECTION basically deep respect. It was confirmed in three finals this year alone, this cover (laugh). This is a piece of Recommended to everyone who loves DISSECTION.

SOUTHWICKED (U.S. / Europe) "Death's Crown" CD review by hardrockinfo

Image

By Jimmy Blom

It all started when Allen West (lead guitar) and Marco Vreven (drums) on a European tour with LOWBROW decided to start a new band. They started to work on some songs and found some more members for the band. They signed with Abyss Records in 2011, and their debut album, "Death's Crown", was released in the summer of 2012.
I would describe their music as really good heavy thrash/death metal. Definetely worth checking out, as I use to say when I really like what I hear. They're definetely not the fastest band, but a little heavier, so if that's what you're looking for (something heavy), this is for you. But I would recomend you to check this out anyway.
Among my favorites are "The Phantom Prince" and "Charming Karma".

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Luxi Lahtinen

So, Abyss Records reissued Indianapolis Doom Metal veterans THE GATES OF SLUMBER's debut album "...The Awakening", releasing it in a CD-format again in November 2012 with all new layout, cover artwork by Ken Kelly, a bonus track ('The Cloaked Figure' taken from the band's 3rd 2004 3-track demo) available on CD for the first time, and even a new track listing. It's really good to see this record reissued, since the original Belgian label Final Chapter Records that put it out back in 2004 already, doesn't even exist anymore. Also, finding this record as original, is pretty tough nowadays, too. THE GATES OF SLUMBER's, may I say, 'Sabbathian' / Saint Vitus - que styled retro and / or trad Doom Metal really doesn't need much of introduction. It's pretty evident that Tony Iommi's spectacularly sharp songwriting pencil has left deep marks in the hearts of band members when spinning "...The Awakening", time and time again. Especially BLACK SABBATH's 1970-75 era has had a strong impact on THE GATES OF SLUMBER's trad Doom Metal approach on their debut, and I am positive there's even no reason to start argue about that fact with the band members at all, as they undoubtedly do admit it themselves how much BLACK SABBATH have worked as some sort of an exemplary road signal for them but also LA's SAINT VITUS as well. THE GATES OF SLUMBER have managed to capture that true spirit and vibe of '70s heavier music into their debut opus, sounding amazingly warm, organic, very nostalgic and giving us so much of joy by doing so. Also, I was just wondering how many times vocalist and guitarist Karl Simon has heard from people that at times he tends to sound very much like Ozzy - either intentionally or just by accident, who really knows. For what this album is all about, it's about re-awakening the old spirit of '70s heavier side of music back to life again. Now all hippies unite to rejoice for this. We have a quite helluva feast in here. Band website: http://www.slumberingsouls.com, label: http://www.officialabyssrecords.com

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by boulevardbrutal

Image

By

Do you know Daemonicus ? I do not know but this is definitely a band to watch in my opinion. Their second album released in October and I have the chance to listen en primeur. If I tell you death Swedish, is that it makes your mouth water?

Where to start to describe yourself Deadwork ? Ah yes, I know: a Brutal across!

It summarizes.

Approval Marie-Pier: 8.5 / 10

But seriously ... need I say more? No slowdown, no niaisage! You can feel the influences of old school death metal in the sound of the guitars and bass. It has a very heavy and very disortionné. At the battery on a level playing pretty record. The blast beats abound and it never slows down or almost. Sometimes in death, a major shortcoming in the song is that the tone is always the same, very low. This is not necessarily bad, but the voice changes do no harm. In the case of Daemonicus , the singer has no problem to go for a little less serious note, while remaining in the throat thoroughly. The solos are not impressive but the riffs are powerful techniques. We are entitled to break down some good here and there and not very reassuring atmosphere is created in some parts with sounds and strange voices like "horror film".

10 songs on the disc, there is none that I did not like. By cons, it may be because they all look so to speak. It can be a downer. It is the absolute brutality but sometimes it is not bad to also include some songs or softer passages. It allows us to appreciate even more violence and make "cuts" in the album.

Despite this detail, it is still an excellent album that I probably réécouterai repeat and I suggest you get in October. At the time of writing criticism, the exact date was unknown, but it will certainly come out in time for Halloween.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) "...the Awakening" CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Pim B.

The Awakening came in 2004 from the Belgian Final Chapter Records and meant for many fans of doom metal the first encounter with The Gates Of Slumber from Indianapolis. This debut is now re-released on CD. This had already done once have been through the Chilean Emissary Records but to my knowledge never did. This label has no best turn made ??with a certain release of Reverend Bizarre, but that aside. Iron Kodex Records released the album on LP or earlier with the necessary bonus songs and other artwork. The same artwork is now also used for this CD. Incidentally, on this CD only 1 bonus track and that is the demo version of the song The Cloaked Figure. Furthermore, the tracklist slightly modified and the intro of the song The Awakening (Interpolating The Wrath Of The Undead) now has a heading, namely: Resurrection From The Underworld. The muscles doom with texts from the sword & sorcery genre fits into the vein of bands like Saint Vitus, Celtic Frost, Cirith Ungol, Manilla Road, Black Sabbath and Manowar. Definitely a debut album which still stood at may be. If you have not then you are sure to strike because it belongs to the best work of The Gates Of Slumber.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Roel de Haan

'The Acausal Fire is the second album by the Serbs of Bane. Bane is specialized in black metal in the vein of Dissection, Naglfar and old Dark Funeral. Sure, it's productionally modern and contemporary plays on speed and intensity. However, stylistically not deviate much from the Swedish black / death formula that Dissection Sun fame managed to acquire. Bane plays fast and technical, and they are more than adequate musicians. Their sense of melody is fine and the song-writing is well done. This is not original in any way, but it's pleasant enough if you do not expect more than a very decent emulation of the style used by the aforementioned bands popularized.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Pim B.

On the album Host Of Rotting Flesh from the Swedish Daemonicus I have few good memories. So I was on my guard when I was the new album Dead Work on a thorough listening session subdued. Dead Work pleases me no more better. This is death metal I like to listen to. Obviously firmly rooted in Swedish soil alongside bands like Dismember also a clear influence of God Dethroned. The way this Dutch act melody interweaves with the brutal work Daemonicus clearly not escaped. No, this is just a great album.

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Ype

In The Grip Of Chaos goes straight right off the starting blocks with false tuned guitars. A bit in the style of Autopsys Mental Funeral happy, actually sounds pretty good. Erupted from Sweden until 2010 and was created for me also take some may wait with this debut album. In terms of tightness, songwriting and production is one because there is not, although none of these ingredients is a must for a nasty dose of death / grind. In this case, however, the balance just by in a negative direction and the sound glitches sometimes more ignorant than a pleasant byproduct of game drive or adrenaline. What is there to be enjoyed on this album? Death / grind in the vein of Carcass and Exhumed, without too much speed but with melody. The vocals are like me something less good; Daniel sounds a bit though Glen Benton, but grunt too deep for me what this music. However, there are enough pieces on this album that groove and enjoyable, so if that is a harbinger of what Erupted us will bring, it will be fine.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by destructive-music

Image

By JOHN DOE

Now, when I got this to review, given the name of the band and album I expected technical, gore soaked brutal death. Admittedly a scene which I think can get very stale with only a handful of bands who can pull it off without sounding ludicrous.

However, Fetus Stench do not fall into that category. Whilst the theme and lyrics are still drenched in all things death and gore, the music is a much different beast as Fetus Stench mix a blend of death metal styles. It’s hardly surprising as they are from Sweden that one of those component sounds hearkens back to old school Swedish death metal in the vein of Dismember and early Entombed. They also showcase elements of the US brutal death such as Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation but these elements are only flourishes and interjections of technical riffing. For the most part this is old school death done in a modern way. It’s worth pointing out too that the production here is fantastic. Perfect for the style and tighter than a gnat’s chuff! Vocals are a mid-range growl though some guttural lows and screams rear their ugly head from time to time.

As well as the aforementioned styles there are plenty of thrash elements here only done in a much more brutal fashion and also incorporating occasional melodic highlights on the guitars as well as some spiffing solo work. Also present is the inclusion of grindcore riffs and beats although sporadic. Essentially Fetus Stench have surpassed all my expectations with a solid and powerful blend of death metal styles. The closest bands I could liken them to are Deranged, Anata and Cannibal Corpse but there are really so many different elements here that pinning down a particular sound is difficult, but that’s a positive.

Stand out tracks are ‘Meat Grinder Flesh Obliteration’, ‘Severe Suffering’ and ‘Descending into the Realm of the Dead’ (great melodic ending). Highly recommended for fans of any death metal style, there will be something here for you!

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By Demosthenes baric

The Swedish death metal scene is one of the most extreme in the field of metal and generally Sweden is a country that has pulled many historic and remarkable bands such as At the gates, the Dismember, Entombed and the Bloodbath. So, given the opportunity at a new band made its appearance and continue the tradition of the birthplace of the death metal. From Vaxjo, Sweden, then the deathsters Erupted move the full length work entitled "In the grip of chaos". The band was formed in 2010, consisting of 3 members, known as Beyond hell. But after some mishaps and changes in their line up, the band members decided to make a new start by changing their name to Erupted and releasing their first job in 2011, a 3 track EP comes to the fore entitled "Faces of death ". The EP was released on 1 June 2011 and within 2 hours had been sold out! After this huge success, the band, after a time, he was ready to pull out their first full length. And so begins the whole thing. Reading the above information, I personally quite surprised, as we hear every day in our time to be sold out new releases. So thought I would hear something good enough, which happened as "In the grip of chaos" seemed a rather remarkable and very brutal phase that sent literally! From the very beginning shows the wilder the band, listening to the introduction of the first track "Salvation from below". Something like a warning followed by a chaotic screams of anguish as one of the most leading cues has heard thriller, "I am the devil ... and I am here to do the devils work "(Rob Zombie's The devil's reject) and understood the piece coming soon is exactly what the warning says to sample ... "What you are about to hear is really disturbing"! A horny, powerful groove-riff individuals directly into yob without manage to catch your breath, with the drums to follow faithfully the chaotic pace, the more bass is flooded and the road furiously brutal vocals that blow your brain, and a generally bulky as other production goes, it's just what I want to hear right now! So it seems that we are dealing with players who know how to do their job, watching the remaining pieces of the album, which did not stop a minute to bury you and keep in intensity, with rhythm guitars baritones and scattered leads to break the monotony (the note leads to bring in a very early phase Bloodbath), played by guitarists Tobias Petersson and Jonas Davidsson. The bass, although incredibly flooded the sound manages to distinguish filling very well with the sound cues and generally completing the package of the whole stage, accompanied by a drummer, who with his old school character in his playing manages to raise adrenaline at maximum! Great example of the above features are the songs "Path to perdition", "The dark mistress" and "Born of hate", which I personally believe that with the "Salvation from below", is the most groove-ata and more gamistera disc! Also be said that in this album include songs from his EP release of the band such as "Faces of death". Another thing I noticed on the art work on the album, which shows something like a tribal version one furious deity representing death and chaos. This perhaps has to do with the whole thing and themes of the band which ranges philosophical and occult themes (at least this band speculates). But since I have the opportunity to say my opinion, this album is good, but could be much better with better production and maybe a little more attention to the final mastering, and in some places lost synchronization between the guitar, which although not so tragic, but certainly spoiled little picture as to 'yes. Finally as it may, one is Positive phase the death metal listener might appreciate.
