So while I attempt to find members for my Black Metal project, I thought of going the NIN route per say. Meaning that I'd record the vocals, and just have guest/session musicians and do it over the computer and such. I was wondering if anybody knew of a good mic I could use for this. Keep in mind that I'm just a GED studying 17 year old who only makes twenty bucks every two weeks. And I suppose a suggestion for a program to record would be nice as well lol.

With that budget, get a used rock band mic, and look for a freeware/shareware DAW.

Save up for a month, buy a used Samsung GOmic and download Audacity and voila!

Or you could save up for a month and get a Shure SM57. Really versatile mic used by quite a few pro metal musicians.

But yeah, when talking affordable and versatile one mic solutions the SM57 is a great choice. It's got it's reputation for a reason. Electro Voice makes a comparable mic also (though not quite as rugged), as do a few others. Really you should budget/save for around 100-150 if you want to do anything beyond demo quality.

SM58 for vocals and SM57 for instruments. I have a 58 I've used in over a hundred shows and dozens of recording sessions. Can't beat it for sound, durability and price.

SM57 is pretty much an industry standard, indestructible, and sounds great. New or used they'll run about 100 bucks, and worth every penny. You really can't get anything better for the price. For an audio recording program, I would say use Reaper. It's an incredible program, and you can download it and use it for free - and after a few weeks or so, they just have a screen thing that says please buy, it's not free, and then it goes away. And to buy it it's only like $50. I used it for like 4 months before I bought it. Reaper and a Shure SM57, that's about the best you can get in terms of affordable and professional quality.
