Well, I have heard some dubstep recommended by some friends of mine, but I just don't find anything special about it... The thing is that when I hear it, I think I should like it because of the sum of the elements (heavy bass, rhythm based, dark, usually minor intervals, dissonance), but I end finding nothing interesting... (It may be because I don't like dancing)

So, tell me: Is there any dubstep musician I may like taking into account what I mentioned before or is it just not for me?

PD: I'm a pretty open minded guy when it comes to music (I'm more in the Jazzy side of life though) but I have not heard a lot of electronic music, so please bear with me

Thanks!!

Skream, 50 Carrot, Audiak, Subfiltronik, AD, The Strangers, Bloodthinnerz, (old) Bassnectar from his first or second album, Digital Mystikz, Deemed, Deemsta, Cotti, Sukh Night, Substep Infrabass, D2...

Some songs I would recommend:
Digital Mystikz- Haunted
50 Carrot and D2- Dark Side
Bassnectar- Blow

The best stuff is the earliest stuff on Tempa records, early 2000s, stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9cw_4zItu8
kind of a different sound from today to some extent, I think it wasn't even called dubstep, it might be what is referred to as 2step, but at the time I think most people would consider it some drum and bass offshoot.

It all pretty much sounded like this more or less, but it was sometimes better/sometimes worse depending on how interesting the vocal samples were.

For some classic dubstep, I'd suggests Skream's (he's already been mentioned in the thread) debut, Skream!. It's really fantastic, and it has a lot of actual dub in it. His second album is meh, though. Benga's two albums are both very good for this. Unlike Skream, his sophomore is pretty good, too. There are more but their names escape me right now. Oh and Burial's first album is really good, really nice atmospheric sort of stuff.

Well, aren't the guys from Knife Party 2 of the members from Pendulum? Thats why the sound pretty alike in some element :-P

Have you heard of Excision? It is one of my fav dubstep artist, you may enjoy it.

Also, Broken Note is a diferent kind of dubstep, a bit more "serious" I think (?)

Only one mention of Burial? Although I'd skip the debut and go straight on to 'Untrue'. When I first decided to give the whole dubstep/future garage thing a go, I read a review on Burials 'Untrue' which stated, "This is where dubstep begins and ends". That was all the convincing I needed. I'd also recommend the 'Kindred' EP.

It's the perfect soundtrack to urban surroundings. Definitely dark and dissonant.

I found this list quite useful.

I think you might like this. They reminded me of Burial on my first listen.

Well since we're on a metal forum, perhaps you'd enjoy 'Borgore' ? some of his work features metal-ish drumming like here:

http://youtu.be/Xqjb9OzdXck (even some blastbeats on 1:07)

Or Substep Infrabass which has a dark atmosphere:

I'm into the more atmospheric side of the genre, so my recs are more along those lines.

Distance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25MHRahdf2M

Probably my favorite dubstep act. Extremely atmospheric, sort of industrially-tinged, great drum sounds, and a nice subtle sense of melody. This really brings to mind cold, impersonal cityscapes; extremely cool imo.

Vex'd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QglxPmhp0gU

Also very atmospheric, but this stuff is far more abrasive than Distance. The bass grooves are heavier, the tones harsher, and the atmosphere more apocalyptic.

And I, of course, co-sign Burial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15D73cHBDg8

Whoa, thanks for all the amazing recommendations!!

Really digging Skream, Exciscion, Broken Note and Borgore

Burial's atmospheric sound was also kind of refreshing... gonna look into that list later, but it seems promising!

I realized i don't really like the vocal sampling in songs, also, the multi layered atmospheres are really what I'm looking for....

Thanks guys!

I "get" dubstep circa 2002-2007 or so. To me it seems like there was some major shifts in style when it got popular and "brostep" came along. I'm pretty sure there still are good dubstep producers with styles I can dig but since this is so hyped genre right now it's harder to go through all the stuff I don't care for to find them.

You should check out SCORN. It's Mick Harris (ex Napalm Death), pretty much invented the style a decade before it became popular.
