Damned if Peep Show isn't one of the funniest shows ever. I can't believe it took me this long to check it out.

I've been on a doom roll as well but more Iommi-inspired doom. Of late, I just got into Church of Misery. What a band. Your thoughts on CoM?

Church of Misery is fucking rad. Although to be honest raspy vocals in doom metal turn me off a bit. I like clean, plaintive vocals with occasional low key snarls in trad doom. For instance Wino (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed etc.), Daniel Bryntse (Isole, Ereb Altor), Patrick Walker (40 Watt Sun, Warning) etc.

Personally, I find there are loads of bands who I enjoy in a live setting who also end up being rather tedious when listening to their studio stuff (Testament is as good an example as any here).

Well, yes, that sums up my thoughts on Testament as well, although the new album sounds a lot better than anything they've released before.

My life has slowly degraded into an episode of Peep Show over the last few months I've been out here...

Everyday I try not to be a dick....but you know, things happen. Drugs, drinking, sleeping with friends' girlfriends, dead end jobs....crippling comedic sense of nihilism... these all add up and are clearly intertwined.

Also....life lesson. it's way easier to be a dick.

I recently played a game of Halo: Comabat Evolved with a person with the same user name. I wonder if it's the same person.

I have come to the conclusion that Reverend Bizarre's In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend is one of the best doom albums. No, not one of the best doom albums released during the last decade, nor one of the best traditional doom albums. It's one of the best doom albums in general. In fact, I will listen to it again, as it's a spellbinding piece of work, whether as background listening or as an enshrouding auditory experience.

I prefer Harbinger of Metal but In the Rectory of etc really is a great listen
Reverend Bizarre can't do no wrong, only So Long Suckers sucks a bit but is a fine album anyway

Reverend Bizarre isn't bad, but I can almost never actually finish listening to one of their albums. I remember I used to get accused of 'not getting doom' for that.

That's prefectly understandable. Their music is quite dense, even for doom standards, and their tendency to mostly play long songs with rather few riffs is something that I can easily see could get bothersome for others. As for the people who throw around those types of comments; to hell with 'em. To hell and back with them.

I like their guitar sound, vocals and the general 'true doom' aesthetic, plus "Ceaser Forever" is an awesome tune, and parts of "Teutonic Witch." And a few of the more manageable-length songs on Crush the Insects. But really once I found Briton Rites and Hour of 13 I never cared to listen to much of the Rev anymore.

Which reminds me that I should listen to For Mircalla again when I find the time. That album rules, though I'd like it even more if Bentley sang throughout the whole thing instead of only the last track. Phil Swanson is cool and everything, but I just don't find his vocals nearly as fitting to the band's sound as Howie's, and the latter just possesses this sort of sombre, clerical dignity that I find to be extremely compelling.

They're pretty overrated. Slow for the sake of slow a lot of the time. Their more uptempo stuff tends to be really good, though; and the moments where the guitars get a little busier and play some melodies rather than just hammer super slow chords.

I can understand that, but they do it well. I could list off hundreds of Funeral Doom bands that do that, only they aren't nearly as powerful as the mighty Reverend are.

Also, fuck Microsoft for putting an eject button right next to the format button when you right click a flash drive. I only had a spare copy of my train ticket on there but still :ugh:

Hour of 13 basically does exactly what the Rev does except they write shorter albums with more convincingly evil, atmospheric tunes, and better riffs and songwriting to boot.

The two don't even sound alike to me. Ask Tobias to stop raping your ears, Empy! If you guys want a band who has shorter songs and more riffs, the latest album of Spiritus Mortis is a great choice.

Speaking of that sort of rusty, plodding doom, what are your guys' opinions on Stabat Mater? I dig the self-titled quite a bit... it's got that unsettling use of oddly uplifting riffs in a macabre context, sort of like what you find in Hour of 13 (albeit approached very differently), a mixture that I find strangely perverse and alluring. Plus it's got some really neat production textures, particularly on some of the synths. Reminds me I have to track down more of his stuff.

What little Reverend Bizarre I've heard seemed actually pretty good, but I'd have to take in some more yet.
