Yeah, co-op dungeon games are certainly more fun; Arkham Horror will always be one of my all-time favourites. I guess it's just me who thinks Thunderstone is relatively simple, at least more so than Dominion. Hmmm.

Hmmm, I'd disagree; I found Thunderstone to be far, far easier to keep track of than Dominion. I guess, though, that this might be because I found the narrative concept of the former to be more engaging, and more intuitive - honestly, I'm more the monster-fighting type than a land-gathering strategist; while I love games involving the latter, too, there comes a time when I just wanna go out and slay something.

Eh... well, I don't know what to tell you. I mean, I guess you could say there are more ways to go about your goal in Dominion (depending on the cards that are picked), so there could be a little bit more complexity in that sense... but in regards to the complexity of the game mechanics? I can teach Dominion is 5 minutes tops. Want to compare the rulebooks for both games? ;) (OK, I just did because I'm a nerd. 7 pages in Dominion vs 20 in Thunderstone.) That said, admittedly we've only played the new edition of Thunderstone ("Advance"), so maybe that one is significantly more complex than the original...? Though I was under the impression that they didn't change that much to the game.

Yeah, the basic rules for Dominion are very simple, all the complexities come about from card combos rather than rules.

Hmmm... Honestly, I always thought the Dominion rulebook wasn't very helpful beyond explaining the very basics of the game. I've not played Thunderstone "Advance", only the original, so - while I could pounce on that and say it makes all the difference - I really don't know if they've changed the game much. I'll admit that the basic mechanics of Dominion are probably easier to learn than those of Thunderstone, but I think that learning to win or to deploy interesting strategies is much harder in the former than the latter, especially when it comes to the Dominion expansions; once you realise that you need to keep track of fighting ability types and light/food in Thunderstone, there aren't - in my experience at least - that many novel things to do. In Dominion, though, there are so many advanced ways of playing, including by doing counter-intuitive things. While I found Thunderstone easier to learn than Dominion, I can certainly see that this is a personal quirk of mine; what I would say, though, is that Dominion is easy to learn but hard to master, whereas the opposite might apply to Thunderstone.

Me, HB and Necroticism are gonna start a Shadowrun campaign later this month, any fans/players here? I'm gonna start my character soon, I'm probably doing some kind of sadistic battle mage elf chick! Share your experiences and tips, I guess.

I've heard a lot about it and interested in playing, but I simply don't have the time to read through everything let alone buy it. Besides, after my WoD chronicle we're going to start a new Eberron campaign in 3.5, after that I'm hoping to have an introductory Mage: The Awakening campaign ready. So yeah we're pretty busy :p

So here's an idea I've been kicking around for a little while. Anyone remember the old point and click adventure game series The Legend of Kyrandia? I was thinking about it and thought that it would be a pretty sweet setting for D&D. Think about it; a fantastical place, old magic, talking trees, creepy grottos, rainbow machines in the sky, a clockwork machine that controls the fabric of the universe etc.

Anyone ever attempted to do anything like this before? What's the best place to start and what are things to really keep in mind? More importantly, anyone big fans of both the games and D&D that would be interested in creating a cool 'new' setting?

Played a whole damn lot of it, the first three editions, mostly second and third. The first one was a bit crappy. A really cool setting with a lot of thought put into it. I'm not too keen on the fourth edition or the style of it. Or the new wireless Matrix stuff. While it is a very cool and vital aspect of the game, I'd recommend against anyone actually making a decker, at least in the beginning. It's very complicated stuff and when the decker gets going, his stuff will take a while and it will be only him doing his thing while the rest just lounge around.

A cool setting, yes, perhaps not that appropriate for level- and combat-based system like D&D. Would probably go with something with a more elaborate magic system or something like that.

Interesting, though the second thought that came to my mind - the first being "yay, Small World!" - was to wonder why on Earth there's a Big Bang Theory boardgame... I'm horrified and curious.

By the way, is the online version of Small World that's mentioned here worth playing?

Still busy with my World of Darkness chronicle, I tend to take great inspiration from all of the time/reality bending SCP stories. Last week I had one of my players get caught in a space/time anomaly which transported him to 16th century London, in which he was strapped to an operating table and two plague doctors were planning to do an autopsy on him while he was still alive and drowsed by opium (to rid him of the 'stirring pestilence').

“Subject is showing remarkable resilience, will increase dosage"

Needless to say, it freaked him out real good :-D

While on holiday in New Zealand we have been playing King Of Tokyo endlessly. This was a great early xmas present from my wife's brother, and is LOADS of relatively simple fun, and quick too! The object is simple; destroy Tokyo, or be the last monster standing at the end of play, with loads of damage, healing and general mischief cards for your monster to attain to wreak destruction. Seriously fun.

Shadowrun is quite cool! We're 4 players, one mage elf chick (me), one troll with guns, one human female hacker/rogue & spy kinda and one dwarf gun specialist/ex cop/the face (negotiation leader played by Necroticism). Hellblazer was the game master and he gave us a cool first mission (we need to get a stolen disc for those familiar with this "written for the game" campaign). It's not finished yet since it was our first time playing the game and we got distracted quite a bit (often by my sex jokes like "if all goes wrong, I can blow the dude"). I'll say that I was the star of the first meeting with my smart use of my invisibility spell!

The system is quite cool and easy to grasp too. It's always d6 and you roll them x number of times.

My character is pretty much the best thing ever :-D but yeah, it's easy to grasp, there are just a LOT of factors.

Some of the Dark Angels toys look good. However, I'm broke and I play Necrons. I don't run Flyers often and I'm still hated anyway. Eh.

Anyone play Apples To Apples or Loaded Questions? Those are fun.

I already have about 3k points of Dark Angels, so there's not a whole heap of new toys I'll need. Flyer is nice, candles and all haha.

On a related note, a friend of mine hit me up the other day saying - "hey, do you want my blood angels army and all my bitz and paints". SCORE!

Deathwing dudes look cool (that fucking flail). But since I'm still doing Space Wolves, I'm not too excited about Dark Angels.

What I would consider doing for a second Marine army is Black Templars. I want to see them get an update and have their conversion box be as cheap as the Dark Angels one (seriously, the DA one is about $20 while the BT one is $33).

I'd avoid BT's till they get a new codex - the current one is old as the hills and not very competitive.

That's what I've heard, and I will wait. Maybe pick up a xenos army in the meantime (I'm thinking Orks just because I have the Black Reach models). I still need to assemble and paint some Wolves shit I got for Xmas though.

I just hope they don't give the Templars the White Dwarf codex treatment like they did with Sisters.

Nice new models, other than that it's hard to get excited about Space Marine stuff because EVERYONE PLAYS SPACE MARINES AND THAT'S ALL ANYONE EVER TALKS ABOUT CONCERNING 40K. Sorry, it's not just on here either, it's at the store too. I need a break from everyone talking about god damnin Space Marines. And yeah candles on an orbital craft's exterior is retarded.

I only just saw that. It sounds interesting; I'd love to play it some time - I'll have to convince my local geek buddies. I hadn't heard much about Shadowrun, so I looked it up - I really like that kind of 6D system; it's more intuitive, I think, and lets the story take precedence over mechanics.

I kinda agree with his argument about dices. Sometimes, you have to roll 16 d6, it's lame. I like the variety of dices I use when I play D&D and I <3 the d20.

:o Wow, 16 is a lot! I was thinking more along the lines of 6-10, which is what I'd encountered in games with D6 systems. Good grief.

The d20 is very cool, and has the added bonus of impressing any non-gamer who sees one... I've had people who think only D6s exist (yeah, there are still people like that; could be an Autralian thing) assume I use it for some kind of ritual. I don't know, though; variety is good, but having to carry around lots of different kinds of dice can get annoying. And - in simpler games - the 'number of D6 you roll = skill/ability level' system is, I think, a lot less intimidating for people who are new to this kind of thing.

I changed to playing a Guard army (Death Korps) out of boredom with playing marines all the time.

Re dice: we played a game the other weekend where 60 Orks charged 5 terminators. I think we had to roll around 200 dice to resolve that. Or if I give the "first rank fire, second rank fire" order to 30 guardsmen, thats 90 d6 rolls straight away. It's annoying, but d6 mechanics make it easier to run the mental predictions for hit/wound/save ratio's. Plus they are cheap and easy to find. 40k players tend to buy them in cubes of about 60.

I now have 14 days and 17 hours to get 2 armies finished for Arcanacon. It's a great tournament - the southern hemisphere's biggest one actually at 150 players. for some odd reason it's always been 1200 points, which in 6th ed (with the advent of fliers) is pretty small. My brother is taking my Deathwing army - need to base a couple of terminators and finish adding the stormshields. I'm taking my Death Korps army. Not too much to wrap up there - just 10 of the Forgeworld deathrider models to finish and a Valkyrie and I'm done. Unusually for me I've extensively playtested the army this year and I think it's fairly effective.

Wow, cool to see Shadowrun and Arkham Horror getting a lot of love here...those are the 2 that I've really wanted to try playing.

I'm pretty new to tabletop gaming, I've only done a few games of regular D&D but it is something I enjoy immensely.

With experienced players who know what to do and how the rules work, the games get a whole lot shorter. Even with a multitude of players, if they're all well versed in the game. Even just one who isn't will slow the game down a bunch. If you don't count the setup and deciding on a fun, yet not too easy, Ancient, it can take as little as under two hours.
