For whatever reason Immortal seem to get the short end of the stick in this world, I personally love them and this album's their craziest/best work. The Sun No Longer Rises has one of metal's best riffs.

I have been screaming the praises of that song and that riff for years. Glad to know someone else out there hold the same appreciation.

I've searched for some time now, but does anyone know where I can still buy (if even possible) both Druden releases?

@BMV: That Goatmoon is definitely pretty fantastic. I've been getting into them quite a bit lately, in fact. Great stuff. Nachtfalke is quite enjoyable Bathory-esque stuff, and Noenum is excellent, too, very much along the lines of what I'm looking for. Looking at all of the stuff I like, I guess Finland's scene produces more of my style of BM than any other country, although some of my favorites hail from elsewhere (Angantyr from Denmark, Nyktalgia from Germany). The other stuff didn't do much for me (well, besides Behexen, who I already know). Marblebog is pretty close, but the vocals were just pretty shitty for me. Thanks a lot though!

I recommended Goatmoon before him. :grumble:

A little. :P

In case you haven't listened to Walknut, by the way, do so now. It definitely fits your request of "long, fairly repetitive songs, fairly slow place, depressing atmosphere", although the riff assault requirement isn't met.

You know what would be sick? Black metal with a strong Neurosis influence (yes, I am pretty much obsessed with them). Please tell me this exists.

Altars of Plague have a very restrained influence from Neurosis. Their music is no where as complex or varied, but there's the heft and atmosphere of Neurosis for sure.

personally I love Sol, it's got this great post-hardcore vibe to it. but as for what you're after one of their full lengths or Tides might be the best place to look.

Cobalt, although they're rarely slow and meditative like Neurosis.

In the mood for more off-kilter "black metal." Botanist, Dead Reptile Shrine & Wormsblood all fit the bill perfectly. What else ya got?

I haven't heard any of those, but here are some of my more recent (last six months) off the wall discoveries:
Jumalhämärä https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIASMitqbkg
Circle of Ouroboros https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4JDAO0xZR0
Rahu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0u3qs8h62g
IC Rex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC80gzuU8jU

dystopia4, you might also be interested in Jumalhämärä. They have some post-rock influence in certain songs that bears resemblance to Neurosis in that it can be quite wrathful and intense rather than entirely mellow. They have wholly soft songs aswell, which I think are fairly good actually.

I haven't heard Rahu or IC Rex. CoO and Jumalhamara are not what I'm looking for though. Two very unique bands, with competent musicians. I'm not looking for that. ;)

I love Cobalt, Gin is quite possibly my favourite metal album of all time. I guess I can kind of see what you mean by the Neurosis connection. I know that Erik is a fan.

At least the more violent stuff of Souls at Zero and such. I don't know how similar it really is, but usually if black metal and Neurosis are mentioned in the same sentence, so is cobalt. Anyhow, check out Jumalhämärä, some of their stuff on Resignaatio especially reminds me of Souls At Zero.

I gave Jumalhämärä a listen, and it's awesome. I totally see what you mean about it kind of sounding related to Souls at Zero. Vattnet Viskar were pretty cool, although I didn't really pick up the Neurosis influence.

I'm looking for symphonic black metal with keyboards that are very prominent, epic and/or atmospheric-sounding. Something sounding like these songs:

Dimmu Borgir - Tormentor of Christian Souls
Troll - Naar solen blekner bort; Kristenhat
Emperor - Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times
Nokturnal Mortum - Kuyaviya; Veles' Scrolls
...And Oceans - Trollfan

Alternatively, you can view my Last.FM symphonic black metal library to get ideas.

Usually, most symphonic black metal I come across hardly sounds symphonic at all, and that really bores me.

Clowns in bands like Dimmu Borgir or Cradles of Filth and their followers are ruining the whole black metal scene. Prime example: look up Nicolas Cage's son.
Your list is quite the go-to symphonic bm. Here are some bands for you to dig a little deeper into the trve symphonic bm scene.

@NJMike:

you should get your hands on "First Spell" and "Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell)" by Gehenna.

Also Sirius' "Aeons of Magick" and "Spectral Transition - Dimension Sirius" will surely be right up your alley

edit: oh, and of course the first albums of Limbonic Art if you don't know them already

edit 2: "The Art of Dreaming" by Golden Dawn - this should be totally your's, I guess

I only liked Limbonic Art's "Moon in the Scorpio", that a good friend of mine recommended to me.

Yeah I know how people take on all that and stuff, but I honestly don't really care :P I will listen to any music that sounds good to me; I couldn't care less about "scenes" and things.

And thank you for the list. I already know of Obtained Enslavement and they are great. And I have been meaning to check out Alghazanth.

I'm just looking to get into new, interesting black metal. I haven't had any luck with a recommendation thread. That's okay though, because when the right recommendation comes around it will be worth while. I'm pretty into black metal, for starters, I think I know most of the really well known bands. I've seen until the light takes us like 5 times, own it on DVD. A blaze in the northern sky is probably my most listened to black metal album, which on my old computer had like 40 listens on it all the way through.

Just to give you an idea of what i'm in to (there's also stuff I didn't feel like adding for the sake of not caring for it):

I recently have been really getting into mutiilation. Some random stuff, taake, skagos, craft, Darkthrone, mayhem, beherit (all time favorite black metal album is drawing down the moon), inquisition, sarcofago (i'm into a lot of that cross of metal genres with black metal), Armagedda, Bathory, Blasphemy, Immortal, Dawn (swe), Dodsengel, Emperor, forgotten tomb, frostmoon (norway) (one of my all time favorite albums is the tordenkrig compilation album), Life is pain, Martyrvore, Master's hammer, Mefisto, Mysticum, Mystifier, Necromantia, Obtained enslavement, Odium, sacramentum, dissection, Silencer, szron, ulver, summoning, vinterland, windir, Horn (germany), Gris, Coldworld, troll, Ved buens ende, Ash borer.

I picked out my very favorite black metal bands. Just to give you an idea of what I'm in to. Some of it's a little more deep cut into the genre. I'm looking for stuff that basically any more hardcore black metal fan should know, or perhaps if you have a band you really like that you wouldn't mind letting someone else in on. I really want to get past the point of being 'new' to black metal, because I've listened to it a lot and I would just love some new, perhaps more far out stuff to listen to. I was also just going to spend tomorrow just listening to all the albums I haven't heard before off rateyourmusic consecutively.

P.S. I didn't list Burzum, because I don't approve of varg's naziism. I still like his first albums up until the synthesizer album (didn't he opt out of guitars because he said they were negro instruments? Wtf). I don't listen to NSBM type stuff.

I'd suggest Lugubrum. Been listening to a lot of them lately, mostly the recent stuff - Heilige Dwazen, De Ware Hond, Albino De Congo, Face Lion Face Oignon. Great stuff, would fit your description of being a bit more out there than most.

I am looking for some punk/rock infused BM similar to Darkthrone's "The Cult is Alive". i.e. BM with more punkish guitar riffs while still maintaining the BM guitar effects and vocals.

You probably heard Kverlertak but if not, check them out. You like punk in metal, check Children of Technology, awesome thrash/crust/punk.

oh man Kverlertak is so close to what I am looking for. Their not quite brutal enough though. I like Children of Technology a lot, again though, not what I was looking for with this request :/ if you like children of tech. Toxic Holocaust are worth checking out.

Impaled Nazarene's mid-era and later albums have considerable punk influence. In fact, there's a d-beat song on the second album aswell (Soul Rape). The vocalist has a punk/black metal side project called The Rocking Dildos.

From Impaled Nazarene, check out Latex Cult and Rapture, maybe Suomi Finland Perkele for a couple of songs.

Now, while they're not similar to the aforementioned Darkthrone album at all (as with many recent punk-ish black metal bands, especially those from America, their prevalent influence is Ildjarn), nonetheless Bone Awl might come close to your request:

"Artaud to Rivière", from the 2005 "Not for Our Feet" tape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0STV1ivxRmo

"These Days are Marked", from the 2007 "Meaningless Leaning Mess" LP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNr_VRXD1Y4

Also, Aksumite sport a far more significant Darkthrone influence than Bone Awl do, at times sounding like a genuine link between Darkthrone's earlier style, of "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" and "Under a Funeral Moon", and the later style begun with "The Cult is Alive", although emphasising the hardcore-influences:

"Eternity's Slow Rape", from the 2011 "Tormented by Blessings Abundant" tape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7s6SvTVpgs

"Priory of Aksum", from the 2012 "Prideless Lions" tape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L8kltRnJqI

this band is really good.

I liked Aksumite - Eternity's Slow Rape as well. I didnt like the vocals on that second song as much. Same with Bone Awl, really enjoyed that first song and will prob get the tape, but the vocals in the second one ruined it for me.

Looking for anything similar/at the level of Bekhira - L'Élu du Mal. Anything that holds a candle to the riffs/songwriting/melody, doesn't have to be anything overly original.

I am looking for some punk/rock infused BM similar to Darkthrone's "The Cult is Alive". i.e. BM with more punkish guitar riffs while still maintaining the BM guitar effects and vocals.

Vordr
3rd song will probably the best example of what you're looking for.

Abyssgale
Don't know if these Greeks have done anything else or are even still together.

Infernal Stronghold
awesome dudes. might be a bit thrashier than what you're after.

Axeman
as you could guess by the name, very inspired by Ambiex. but it's a very black metal approach. One of those Crepúsculo Negro bands (which might have some stuff you're looking for)

Dodsangel
1 woman black metal/d-beat band. super d-beaty and really good. a shame she's been so quiet recently.

Horna
from their amazing split with Behexen. shows off their more punky side. live recording and very punk vibe to it. definitely check it out. behexen's side is forgettable.

So, I've been slowly edging myself into 'Progressive' 'Avant-garde' and 'post' black metal. I don't really know where to look next in the genre aside from a few bands, I like bands that can push boundaries and make for challenging listening. Blut aus nord has industrial and ambient influence with dissonant riffing, Deathspell Omega is essentially the black metal gorguts, Drottnar is quite similar, Cobalt mixes creative drumming with black metal, Gnaw Their Tounges effectively mixes ambient noise and bm,Axis of Perdition have made some of the creepiest bm out there and Krallice pushes the boundaries of traditional tremolo riffing with a splash of post rock influence. What I don't want is a post rock or neofolk band that thought it would be cool to ad 2 minutes of blasting and shrieking as a crescendo to their composition. I can look up neofolk and post rock (Yay for sigur ros, GY!BE, Yindi Halda, Mono) if I wanted that. In short, I want progression and innovation outside of black metal genre soup, putting parts of other genres in the mix is fine as long as the result helps the atmoshpere and music.

My second request is a bit easier: Black metal with lots of tremolo leads/riffing. Think of the riffing that starts at 4:38 in antichrist:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdspPqBixiY, Mid era behexen (My soul for his glory, By The Blessing of Satan), Lja, and Aldaaron (though some of the cleans, choirs etc. is not what I'm interesting in). Raw production is preferred but not required.

Here's some of my favorites for you to give a go at:

Ved Buens Ende
Fluerety's "Min Tid Skal Komme" album.
Spektr
Todtgelichter's "Angst" album.
Heretoir
Lifelover
A Forest of Stars
Altar of Plagues
Oranssi Pazuzu
Lantlôs
Negură Bunget
Marțolea
Omega Centauri (sounds like a Deathspell Omega/Blut aus Nord/Darkspace cross)
Darkspace
Alrakis

P.S. I didn't list Burzum, because I don't approve of varg's naziism. I still like his first albums up until the synthesizer album (didn't he opt out of guitars because he said they were negro instruments? Wtf). I don't listen to NSBM type stuff.

yeah i'm new to black metal (kind of) ,and was thinking the same thing when i noticed that sub genre(if thats what it is),was like ''really,WTF''.

any way sounds like you got the same taste as me,and i can recommend Primitivevoid's recommendations as he has lead me in the right direction
