ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) Interview by metalbulletin

Image

By Metal Bulletin zine

Melodies within a black/viking metal framework, with slight symphonic/folk overtones (not too much, though), Eternal Helcaraxe is a solid proposition, with good arrangements and songs. It is a matter of listening to the songs and hearing where it goes, to places of mood and melody joined, for the listening ear to assemble it in coherence.Praetorian (guitars, vocals) answers questions about their strong album “Against All Odds.”At the end of the interview you will find all the contact information about the band.-

“Against All Odds” took little time to convince me that it is a good album. How have people in Ireland learned about it?

Thanks. Mostly through word of mouth I'd say, through the internet, too, probably. There was a lot of hype about the album before it's release here in Ireland, because the release "To Whatever End" before it seemed to do pretty well.

What is the story of “One Stands Still Here”? It’s the black metal feeling of the guitar speed/feel and the drumming style, but the melody echoes in the listener’s mind after the song ends. It will probably stay in your live setlist for a while?

“One Stands Still Here” just came together. We've only played one show since the release of "Against All Odds" and it was our second song. Didn't realize it was so popular till we played it to be honest! But it's a funny release, as everyone seems to have a different favourite song, my personal favourite changes depending on my mood.

“As the Snow Gathers” has lyrics that communicate the idea of cold freezing death. You used clean vocals on this one, but you have the sense not to make it a formula for every song. How many vocalists are there on that song?

There are three vocalists on every song on the album. We find that the three vocals can add another dimension to the songs. Thule our bass player does the clean vocal on that song. I think less is more when it comes to this type of music, but if it suits the song, that's all that matters. We always just try to write the best song we can.

“Shadow of the Wolf” catches the listener’s attention and it is about 4 minutes long, probably the most all-out black metal song. Did you feel that you are becoming too epic and need some balance? Is it closer to your earlier songs? Was your demo “Palest Kingdom” (2008) less multidimensional than “Against All Odds”? Maybe not? I have not heard it yet!

No, didn't really think of the album as a whole when we were writing it, as I said we just wrote one song at a time and try to give each one what we thought it needed. I'm not too sure if our writing style has changed to be honest. We have been playing three of the songs from "Palest Kingdom" in rehearsal because we're re-recording them for a re-release of "To Whatever End" with bonus tracks through Abyss Records. We're re-recording "Burning Light", "Palest Kingdom" and "The Undying Lands". It'll be out next year at some stage. If anything "Palest Kingdom" was probably more epic to be honest, the songs were longer and there was a lot more keyboards on it, too. It was a bedroom recording though so the production really lets it down.

The song “Against All Odds” could be the love song on the album! The war/blood/sword/wolf imagery on the other songs can come across as macho/nationalistic (and homophobic), but on this one, the lyrics worked out very well for the epic feel.

Yes, it's been described as a love song before which is nice, that's what I was aiming for when I wrote it, homophobic is a new one though! Anyway, I think lyrics have to be honest to have impact and that's just how I was feeling when I wrote them. When I'm writing lyrics I don't think of stupid shit like if they are Black metal or Viking metal enough, mainly because most Black metal lyrics in bands are pretty crap, bar a couple of band like Primordial, 40 Watt Sun/Warning or whatever.

Metal Archives says that both Tyrith and Praetorian play drums on the album and Praetorian does drums, guitars, keyboards and vocals?

No, Tyrith done all the drums. I don't know were they got that from, they should probably do some research into these things! I do guitars, keyboards and a third of the vocals.

Do all of you live in the same city? Only Praetorian remains from the old days? Was it hard to find like-minded people?

We all live in the same town, yeah. No, myself and Maulgrim (guitars, vocals) have been in the band from the start. Haha, maybe you should do your research, too! Yeah, both of us couldn't find members to work and stick with us until after the "Palest Kingdom" release. But the line-up we have had for the last two releases have been great. We've also started writing the new album, too and it’s really strong.

What type of childhood did Praetorian have that he learned guitar, drums, keyboards and vocals? “Drums” does not mean “drum machine programming” in this case, does it? By the way, what is “Éadóchas”?

I just loved music when I was younger. Still do. Yeah, I programmed the drums for the first release, badly. “Éadóchas” is an ambient side project I do. First release "Beneath The Lonely Mountain" is out on Sword Production. (http://www.sword.pt.vu/)

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by tombwithaview

Image

By Lily Randall

After 2010’s promising debut ‘Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness’, Bane continue with a formula that works for follow up ‘The Acausal Fire’. The Serbian’s Scandinavian idolization is as apparent as before with a blackened death gem that has been polished off like a fossil from the nineties. The production is a lot cleaner than its forefathers’, but that doesn’t stop Bane from creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Dissection and the vocal balance between black and death flows in between a symphonic intro and outro in a haunting Belphegor manner. ‘As Chaos Rises’ embraces the epic and although the album seems to lose its ferocity near the end, a blinding cover of Dissection’s ‘Night’s Blood’ reels you back in. It may not be a game changer but it’s good to know that the Swedish storm has spread across the world.

ABYSS RECORDS FEATURE #2 by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Well, Dan over at Abyss Records is at it again! He puts out so many quality metal releases that it’s hard to keep track of them all. I usually loose track and let them pile up as I do other projects that I’m behind in. But I just let the Abyss catalog grow to infest my collection and then it comes time to just do a full label feature. Dan is so active and runs such a cool distro that I feel that it’s necessary to cover people/labels like this to let everyone up top in the “main part of the world” what us here in the underground are up to. I also did an interview with Dan last time in feature #1, but this time I will just focus on the releases and do some reviews of each album that I received(either from Dan, from our great friends at Clawhammer PR or from the bands themselves!) So read on and give Dan and Abyss your full support! He deserves it! The bands deserve it! And you will bang your fucking head to these underground gems! NOW READ ON!

by Mike Abominator

CORROSIVE CARCASS “COMPOSITION OF FLESH”

Image

Dan was nice enough to send me this band’s demo back in late 2010. It blew me the fuck away. I couldn’t WAIT to hear the full length album of raging Swedish death metal terror. And the album didn’t disappoint at ALL! All 7 of the classic demo songs are on here including the crushing “Born in a Casket” and the deadly album opener “The Flesh is Not Enough”. New songs like the ripping “Necrotizing Fascitis” and the even ripping-er “Twist of a Knife” kill just as much as the old songs do! This has elements of Nihilist/Entombed, Necrophobic, Dismember, Carnage, Interment and the like. It might even be faster paced, more like the old Necrophobic stuff, with a heavier edge to it. Bottom line is that this is one of the best albums of 2012. Fans of old school death metal will eat it up like rotten flesh. GREAT DEBUT BY A BAND TO WATCH THE FUCK OUT FOR!!!!!!!!

FETUS STENCH “STILLBIRTH”

Image

Right off the bat, I’m NOT a fan of the modern/triggered drum sound. But this band from Sweden is good. VERY good at what they do. Their brand of death metal reminds me more of fellow countrymen Nominon than the usual old school Swedish Dod metal. They have a Morbid Angel influence too, even the middle period when MA was still full on death metal in the slight technical style. There is a strong U.S. death metal influence with Fetus Stench, mainly the Floridian sounds of stuff like Brutality and Malevolent Creation. I can hear SLIGHT touches of old Death here and there as well. Maybe a LITTLE Suffocation/Cannibal Corpse. But like I said, these guys are good at it. The riffs are cool and some are fucking awesome. The drumming is solid(even if I’m not a fan of the sound of them over all!) And the growled vocals fit the music very well. 9 songs of solid death to make the sickos happy. “Stillborn Son” is a total riff attack and my favorite on here. Cool album and a nice change of pace for me.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE “AGAINST ALL ODDS”

Image

Now you obviously know that I’m not usually into “Pagan/Mythological Black Metal”. YOU DIDN’T KNOW?!?!?!?! WOW?!?!?! hahaha. But I figure if Dan is putting it out, then it must be of good quality. So I gave these guys a spin or 2. PLUS my family heritage is of Irish descent, so we Micks have to stick together! From the start, the opener “Claim Your Place With the Gods” is pure epic grandeur. It’s done very well and it’s very epic sounding black metal. Tons of melody and it’s done right, not “too much” in that sense. Not far removed from the mighty Primordial(not that good, but FEW are!) Also has touches of a black metal version of Amon Amarth, and also parts of Insomnium and Moonsorrow in spots. This, for me, would be PERFECT for a drive up the California coast when it is actually GREY in the sky and cold outside. There is a lot going on here, yet it is all done in a simple way as to grab the listener. There are keyboards and some clean vocals thrown in that even fit well for me! The all out black metal stuff has touches of later Immortal and maybe even middle era Enslaved. This was quite enjoyable actually. Any fan of the more “fantasy” type of metal that includes power/pagan/viking/pirate/wearing kilts/war paint/battle/WHATEVER would dig this album. But any more open minded fan of heavy metal will like this as well!

DESULTOR “MASTERS OF HATE”

Image

ANOTHER Swedish band! Dan is buying stock in the country for SURE! haha. This time it’s a tech/death affair. If the drums on the Fetus Stench sounded “modern/triggered” then the drums on this album by Desultor sound like futuristic robots playing this ancient instrument. Not my cup of blood, as I like to say, but very well done. These 2 guys who make this music can play for sure! The music is total, all out progressive and technical. It has a death metal influence. The vocals can be of the thrashy style. But mostly clean and sung clearly. More of a traditional heavy metal style of vox. Interesting for sure. There are some good riffs going around. “Another World” has riffs that would fit on a new Morbid Angel or Nile album. The image layout of the album is all space and mysteries. The lyrics seem to be about these subjects as well. In reality, I think Desultor is just a heavy as fuck power metal band, which is on full display on the song “Denied”. It’s not bad at all. It just gets heavy and thrashy during the verse part, then changes to power chords and a sing along chorus part. Very modern metal sounding as well. Honestly, I think these guys would do very well on the U.S. mainstream metal tour circuit. Not MY style at all, but well done.

DISEIM “HOLY WRATH”

Image

What in the fuck is the singer doing after the intro vocal part? Fucking weird man! Like some moaning in pain or some shit. Anyways, these guys are from Latvia. After his creep attack, the singer and the band settle right in with the first song “Black”. It’s all thrashy death with some nice time changes and the drums are all over the place. It almost has a cool “post rock/hardcore” feel to it. Very simple in the delivery, but it plods along at a nice pace. The title track slows it down a bit. Here there are touches of doom metal. I dig the fucking thrashy riff intro into the fast one two beat banging part! Reminds me of Master’s Hammer. This band has those same “different” type of time changes that most Eastern European bands have. Through track 3 I fucking dig this album! This band and this recording remind me of the early 90s demos from Poland and that early stuff that would sneak out of the then communist eastern block countries. It has A BIT of the old Italian and Greek black metal sound at times, in it’s simplicity. The rest of the album is slower and more doom. But has out bursts of speed and aggression. This is a unique band! I’m reminded of Hellhammer at times. Maybe even the band Post Mortem(“The Coroner’s Office”) This is simple caveman type metal. But I like it. There is just something about it that is hard NOT to enjoy! Plus heavy metal in Latvia doesn’t get much coverage, so good job Dan and Diseim!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to hear more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MIGHTY HAILS TO LATVIAN METAL!!!!!!!!!

SEPTEKH “THE SETH AVALANCHE”

Image

And of course another interesting Swedish band. This time an EP. And this time some kind of weird thrashy death metal stuff. There is a slight punky black & roll touch(a bit of Bewitched maybe.) There are some German thrash elements thrown in here, middle era Kreator with later era Sodom. Interesting and entertaining for sure. The lyrics/story to the opening song “Fuckslut From Hell” is simply awesome and hilarious. Actually the lyrics are pretty damn good throughout. The band is a bit different so I was drawn to check out the lyrics. The layout is almost drawn like a comic book, with a different drawing for each song and topic. The singer is pissed off for sure. Puking and raging the whole time. More hilarity ensues with the song “Not Quite What I had in Mind” which sounds like a sequel to the “Pulp Fiction” rape scene set to a thrashing/grinding metal soundtrack! This is some pretty fucking cool stuff. Very enjoyable when I feel the mood for something different. I will keep this one for my collection for sure! Should be interesting to see what this band comes up with next! This band also reminds me a little of fellow countrymen Raise Hell and Witchery. But this is better than any of those band’s later material. Good stuff here.

FESTER “A CELEBRATION OF DEATH”

Image

Here we have the first studio album from these legendary weirdos from Norway, the mighty Fester. They basically continued right where they left off when we last heard them. Dan did the killer “Silence” re-issue, so now we have the next chapter with this unique band. The same blackened, prodding atmospheric death metal is on full and dismal yet beautiful display here. And Fester are one of THE only bands that can get away with being “beautiful” and “death metal” at the same time! hahaha. The same old killer riffs give way to melodic parts that will have you headbanging until your neck breaks. The creepy ass band photos in the coffins RULE! SO KILLER! The cover painting is also amazing! If you are already a fan of Fester, then this album is ESSENTIAL and you will love the fuck out of it. For those unfamiliar, Fester festers in somber agony. Very moody and depressed, and doomy without being super slow all of the time. Kind of like early Samael meets Godflesh. The drums are very repetitive and prodding like Godflesh. But there is a big black metal influence here too, mixed with the old 1980s death metal, that really brings a dark atmosphere to this album, just as all of the band’s work does. Great to have these lunatics back and to have a new Fester album here in 2012 after all of these years. Brings back great memories! KILLER STUFF!!!!!!!!!!

RADIATION SICKNESS “REFLECTIONS OF A PSYCHOTIC PAST”

Image

Legendary and “cult” are 2 words that come to mind when it comes to fucking Radiation Sickness. Formed in 1987 in Indiana, RS put out a couple of demos that made some noise in the late 80s, then came my introduction to the band through Uniforce Zine(thanks as always Mark!) and I was able to hunt down their killer 1990 7 inch “Bounds of Reality” on Putrefaction Records. I also remember the band’s killer EP ” The Other Me-A Journey Into Insanity” and a couple of comp/splits by Radiation Sickness, then they faded into the sunset with the other bands that disappeared in that era. These long lost records are GOLD these days. You see, ANY killer band from THAT era of the death/grind underground gets my SPECIAL attention. THAT was my passion and STILL my favorite era of music. So this album rules for me. For those unfamiliar, these maniacs play a sort of crazy death/thrash/crossover/grind style. The paces of the songs and the songwriting itself are all over the place. This release has 7 new songs and also that long lost EP I was talking about called ” The Other Me…” That entire 12 song masterpiece remastered and unleashed for 2012. I do like the new stuff with it’s simple Obituary gone a bit more thrash approach. But I still prefer the old classics. Here Radiation Sickness bring the crossover/grind stuff to the table that would fit well with the early Earache Records releases, from the REAL early catalog like Intense Degree, The Accused and Hersey. It is a more “fun” experience for me over all, as it really reminds me of THAT era that I love/loved so much. Songs like “No Future” and “Disfigured Retard” make me wanna slam around in my room and thrash it! The Suicidal Tendencies is huge on the classic “Escape to Insanity”. FUCK YEAH! And it just goes on and on with the killer death noise! This is a GREAT trip down memory lane for me. Listening to this stuff reminds me of when bands like Chronical Diarrhoea, Blasphemy, Samael, Agathocles, Immolation, Ancient Rites, Santa Claus, Merciless, Impulse Manslaughter, Beherit, Eyegouger and MANY more used to share the same fanzines and tape compilations!!!! Gravehill was lucky enough to share the stage with the legends at this year’s DAY OF DEATH FEST in Buffalo, New York (Radiation Sickness played at the first one back in 1990 as well!) Old school sickos rejoice! AND GET THIS FUCKER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even some of you new school kids will love this fucker! GET IT NOW!!!!!!!!

HUMANGLED “ODD ETHICS”

Image

Here is an EP from Humangled from Italy. They are mostly mid paced death metal in the U.S. style, with some bursts of speed here and there. Again, another band that is good at what they do, just not my cup of blood. It gets monotonous at times. The pace is usually prodding and mid paced like I said, with some variation here and there. I can hear some influences from the different periods of the band Death. There are some later Pestilence influences as well. Humangled has mixes of old school, brutal and technical death metal within their sound, but don’t tread too far on ANY of those styles. The music is a bit too simple to be too technical, but there are some time changes and arrangements that would appeal to fans of the tech/death stuff. Maybe even a progressive version of the UK band Cancer? Kind of like that at times. Not bad at all. I wouldn’t recommend it, but I know some fans of death metal will get into this. The production here is heavy and very guitar driven, brought out by the one and only Dan Swanö. Check it out if you like that Jungle Rot style of mid paced death metal.

ROCKING CORPSES “ROCK & ROTT”

Image

Rocking death metal, rolling corpse fucking music. Might be fun putting on during a Halloween party. Sounds like Danzig jamming with a death metal band. Or like the advertisement says “putrid rock n rott with a black toothed grin” which I can agree with. There is a country boogie to songs like “Necropolis” that sound like Cannibal Corpse and Hank Williams Jr. are playing a bar together. This sounds like Six Feet Under, yet MUCH better! It fucking FIGURES that these dudes are from Finland. Rocking Corpses fit with the horror rock/metal stuff that has come out of that country the last few years. It reminds me of Entombed on “Wolverine Blues”(less distorted ‘heaviness’ though!) Very bluesy and true to the boogie sound the band sets out to honor. Now I fucking HATED “Wolverine Blues” when it came out. But keep in mind those guys did “Left Hand Path” and the Nihilist demos at one point in their career, so it was HARD to accept what they did at the time with “W.B.” And I STILL hate that album. But Rocking Corpses didn’t start out as one of the greatest and one of the most influential death metal bands of all time! So they set out to make this rocking hybrid from the start. Does it work? Well, not for me, but I think people will enjoy this. Like I said, I might put it on at a normal Halloween party. But I wouldn’t listen to this on a regular basis. It IS catchy as fuck though, so give it a spin of ya want something FUN and ROTTEN!!!!!!!!!

SOUTHWICKED “DEATH’S CROWN”

Image

This band has former Obituary guitarist Allen West on board. I fucking hated the movie “Shocker”, and this album starts off with a sample from that movie. But once the title track kicks in after the intro, it’s an old school Obituary assault. Very cool on this song! The stomp of that Floridian death metal inspired by Frost/Hellhammer that we grew to love so much is right here. Nice double bass parts that lead the heavy guitar riffs. The vocals are a deeper growl, but fit very well. There is a nice doomy/moody section in the song that goes along well with the prodding, mid paced banging. Next up is “Craving for Blood”. It is a bit slower paced and the rest of the album is pretty much the same Obituary style. The faster part is bad ass. This one kind of reminds me of Massacre. Nothing else really stands out as AMAZING for the rest of the album, but this is a solid debut and has potential. I think this might even be better than what Obituary has been doing the last couple of albums. It is more TRUE to the Obituary sound in my opinion. There are some solid and killer riffs on here. I think the band could speed up the pace a bit and they could enhance their sound overall. There are some fast parts that come up though, maybe not enough for my tastes though. But I like this album and it’s simple attack of old school death. This was MUCH better than I thought it would be as the intro sample threw me off and the name itself isn’t the best. But I will hand it to these guys, if they can keep it going and throw in some more fast parts(which the band sounds awesome doing!) they will be a force! This is cool stuff regardless! Good to see Alan back and killing again! I will recommend this to people that like this sound though. The ancient Obituary sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by Twisted_Psychology

Image

By Twisted_Psychology

When the subject of black metal is discussed, there are specific stereotypes and tropes that are sure to come up just about every time. Even when looking past the various crimes that were committed by the genre’s more infamous adherents, one is likely to call forth images of corpse-painted faces and hypnotic song structures aided by lo-fi production. Maax seems to be one exception to that rule as they have disregarded the modern standards and opt for a more primal approach. While this is their second studio album, it happens to be their third release overall as they previously put out the Dawnbringer full-length in 2009 and the Six Pack Witchcraft EP in 2010.

Several listeners have tried to place Maax somewhere on the line between blackened thrash and death ‘n’ roll (The more you think about it, the more you realize how ridiculous the names of metal subgenres are these days), but their overall sound doesn’t seem to be too far off from what Venom was pioneering in the early 80s. This influence is best demonstrated on “Do What Thou Wilt,” an upbeat anthem that feels like a modern version of the classic “Welcome To Hell.” But while Cronos and his merry bunch may be the leading influence on this group, it’s not the only one to be found on here. One can find clear references to punk, thrash, black metal, and even some classic Motorhead here and there. Fortunately all of these elements work well with one another, reminding one of how most of them had their roots in a singular dirty force.

Speaking of dirty, this album is also made distinct by its production. In a way similar to “Six Pack Witchcraft,” the production is incredibly raw and helps give the album a very live feel that works in its favor. The band itself doesn’t sound as distant as it did on the EP, but there is still a great deal of chaos and intensity to work with. Speaking of the band, they generally put on some good performances though there’s nothing particularly mind-blowing on display. The production aids the guitar playing and drums, making them both sound quite filthy throughout. In addition, the vocals are delivered in a raspy, mid-range bark that makes one wonder if they should be cleaner or harsher. Either way, they carry the songs well and show off a lot of energy.

In terms of how the songs themselves play out, Unholy Rock & Roll is somewhere between the two releases that came out before it. While the songwriting is generally more elaborate than Six Pack Witchcraft and has lengths similar to Dawnbringer, the songs are mostly executed in a very direct, upbeat fashion. In addition to the Venom worship on “Do What Thou Wilt,” “Rot ‘N’ Roll” and the title track are by far the strongest tracks that this release has to offer. Not only are the riffs catchy, but they also throw in some solid gang vocals during the choruses that do a lot to benefit the barroom atmosphere.

The opening tracks known as “Coldest Steel” and “Fight With Fire” are also worth noting for they show off a nice touch of early 80s thrash influence. While this does lead to the tracks having introductions that are respectively similar to Metallica’s “Hit the Lights” and Slayer’s “Angel Of Death,” they quickly become their own tracks with the latter featuring a particularly pounding hook.

Of course, there are a few outliers that move away from the album’s largely rock-oriented nature. The interestingly titled “Purge of Depravity 2: The Pentagram” is a two minute interlude meant to serve as a melodic break from the violence while “Overthrone” seems to take cues from the band’s purer black metal roots. They might not be the most immediate tracks on here but they are still pretty solid in their more dramatic nature.

As any musician will tell you, it is a nearly impossible task to capture the energy of a band’s live sound onto an actual studio release. However, Maax does manage to come pretty damn close to achieving this feat though they may still have a bit more work in terms of their songwriting skill. But for what it’s worth, this may be their most enjoyable album to date and one of the most fun releases that 2011 has to offer. This isn’t a deep album by any stretch of the imagination, but rather one that’s meant to be blared in hopes of pissing off your neighbors. And judging by the lack of complaints that I’ve gotten from mine, I either have really awesome neighbors or just need to make it louder…

Current Highlights:
“Fight With Fire”

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) Interview by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

If it is possible to overdose on Swedish death metal then I’m pretty close to doing so. DAEMONICUS is another great Swedish band. Anders Ekdahl ©2012

When you are a Swedish death metal band do you feel the wind from the wings of the past?

-Yeah! The old classic Swedish death metal bands is always brought up in every review and interview and it´s a heritage to be proud off I think. Many of the bands from the early 90´s metal scene is still active and kicking ass today.

What kind of reactions do you get from people abroad when they find out that you are Swedish?

-I have to say that´s we have experienced just positive reactions in that matter. The Swedish death metal is very high ranked in the world.

With so many Swedish bands doing the rounds do you feel any sort of competition? Or is it just one big brother/sisterhood?

-I think all the metal heads from all over the world feel a strong connection to one another. Metal heads against the rest of the society. And that´s the case with the mentality within the Swedish metal scene. I think we all just want to party and have a good time with each other.

Do you feel that you grow as a band for every new release? How do you keep building the band the best possible way?

-Yes most definitely! With our new album Deadwork we have come a very long way since our first demo 2006. The sound and our music skills have developed a lot. And the fact that we now can record everything in our own studio, the C.C.H.B studio, very suitable for us and our music. Now we can be a lot more experimental in the recording of our albums.

With so many bands out there the competition for the listeners must be killer. How do you attract the attention of them? Do you tour or what?

-Yeah we try to tour as much as possible because we love to play live and meet and greet our fans. And Daemonicus is a band that comes to their best when playing live. It´s a hard time to be seen in this media oriented society.

If I were in a band I would have a hell of a time to choose art work, album title, song titles, writing music that hasn’t been heard before, write lyrics, well everything really. How do go about doing all this as good as you do it?

-Well it´s a lot of pieces in the puzzle but we have a good habit to work everything out over a bunch of beers! When we hang out and rehearsal in C.C.H.B. studio we tend to make the time to fix this kind of stuff.

What is the difference being signed to a national label v/s an international?

-You have to ask me again in a couple of months or so. We just signed to Abyss Records but everything so far has been really nice and we have a good feeling about this album! Hopefully it will open some doors for us in the USA market!

What is that you want to achieve with releasing an album? What do you feel that you have achieved so far?

-Our main reason for playing and making music is to have a fucking good time. To get out and meet all of the crazy metal heads out there is why we make our music. And hopefully the people will enjoy our music!

How far do you see Daemonicus going? What would make you want to throw in the towel?

-I don´t see any limits for Daemonicus and as long as we love what we are doing there is no stopping us!!

What future is there?

-Nothing but death!! Thank you and see you guys on the road! Cheers/ Pike, Daemonicus

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by Metal Nobility

Image

By THE KING OF WAR

From Serbia, cometh BANE and the U.S. based ABYSS RECORDS album entitled, "THE ACAUSAL FIRE". The album starts out with a fantastic orchestrated arrangement that forebodes something epic and dangerous is on the way.. and then the first song, "The End Of Humanity" kicks in with some great trill picking and drumming with some great vocals making for a very crushing, compelling and interesting opening track. "In Endless Silence" boasts some very melodic guitar work and more fantastic drumming. There is a majestic and ethereal quality to this song which led to repeated listens, quite honestly. Delving deeper into the album, more outstanding musical chops are unleashed. BANE are obviously really good song writers and know when to let the leash loose here and there adding some very interesting varieties to the music allowing the style to breath a bit. They have quite catchy chorus riffs and melodies with an occasional choral part thrown in to spice it all up. Taking chances pays off in metal, sometimes, and BANE know just when to do something extra to set themselves apart from the melodic blackened metal crowd. Towards the back end of the album, they change things up nicely with some good old fashioned chugging with some nice keys added to beef it up. Basically, 7 songs in, I'm still interested to see where the album ends up. "World Of Desolation" is quite spectacular, honestly, with all of it changes. Another orchestral arrangement pops up that leads into a very aggressive DISSECTION cover, "Night's Blood". Supremely jamming!

+++

The Rundown: Even for all its thematic darkness, there is a stunning amount of melody involved in all of this harshly vocalised music. Every aspect of "THE ACAUSAL FIRE" is straight up awesome. I look forward to hearing more from these melodic blackened death metal masters, and this is easily one of the best records I've heard this year!

+++

METAL NOBILITY grants BANE "THE ACAUSAL FIRE" a 10/10.

BANE (Serbia) Interview by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

BANE impressed me so much that I just had to just had to interview them. So read and be impressed by the band you too. Anders Ekdahl ©2012

Do you feel that you are on your way to make Bane a household name among those into extreme metal?

-To tell you the truth, not really, honestly…the thing about Extreme Metal today is that any band can play as support to any “big” band only if they have the money and “pay to play”…and that’s not really my vision of Metal and Underground music in general. I prefer for my band to have honest reviews in small webzines and have a small group of happy people after a full BANE concert, than to have a record label paying good reviews & front covers in well known magazines, and to play 20-minute sets in front of well-established bands in front of empty venues, if you understand what I am saying.

This is your second full length album but you’ve also released some split records in-between. What have you gained from these releases and how can you benefit from that now that the new album is out?

-Split releases are ones that I personally enjoy a lot, and all of them are done because of the friendship and support between the bands we’ve shared releases with. Of course, those helped spread the word about BANE a little to the people who bought or traded those releases because of the other bands on the release, which is a great vice-versa effect for all.

How did you go about finding your sound? How much of trial and error have you’ve been through?

-Hm…good question. I can’t really state that BANE has their unique sound, because honestly we sound like a Swedish band from the mid ’90s, just with much better production (sound of the recording, thanks to the evolution of sound engineering). The thing is, I just like that Melodic Black/Death Metal sound, so obviously the influences can be heard when listening to our music. For sure BANE’s sound has evolved since the first demo (recorded in 2007) – much better arrangements, riffs, etc…it just came in a very natural way, since I am the main (well, now only) composer for the band, I just write without really asking myself “will the people like this”, because all this I do it for myself only.

Do you feel that you are a part of greater death metal scene? Do you feel that you are a part of a national scene?

-No, I don’t consider that, really. In my opinion, every scene consists of, well, more or less 10 bands, and the rest are only there for a moment, and then after forgotten….simply, the time we live in now is horrible for small, young, unknown bands…as there is literally no Tape (demo) trading, too many bands resulting record labels to simply write on their websites “we do not accept any demo material”, or eve when they do, most of the time they don’t even reply, and so on…so as I told you, I don’t feel that BANE is part of anything, specially not of some big or great national scene. We are simply an Underground Black/Death Metal band who happen to have a few people enjoying our music, while we remain true to ourselves and do what we love.

How important is that there is an anti-Christian theme to the music/lyrics for it to be death metal? What kind of role does the church play in Serbia?

-Listen, everybody has the right to be what he is, and to write what he wants. Personally I find it extremely important, but it’s not something I will rub into someones face. I simply, again, do it for myself only because it’s who I really am, and the lyrics I write are 666% honest and loyal to my ideology. As for your other question I don’t know really, but quite honestly, don’t care at all. It’s me, my music, my world.

What would you say was/is your greatest influences?

-Jon Nödtveidt (Rest In Chaos). Most important and biggest influence. Actually, Dissection is the reason why BANE exists in this form.

How do you feel that you have progressed over the years?

-I am satisfied to be able to play & progress with the band and the music I love. As long as there is progress, the band will continue to move forward.

When you live in central Europe does it make life easier as a metal band touring/gigging? Do you feel that you are smack in the middle of things?

-Man, I have to point just a thing…Central Europe, in reality has nothing to do where I come from…I come from Serbia, the Balkans. It’s a country where there is not even one Metal shop, no decent concert venues, 2-3 UG labels (cheers to them for keeping the UG scene alive, you know who you are), and most importantly – where an average monthly pay is around 250 Euros. So, for me, touring was months, and months of saving money. Recording albums in Czech Republic (yeah, because there are no decent studios in Serbia to record Metal) was weeks of unhealthy eating just to put everything together. So basically, I am free to say that I lived (because I just relocated to Canada a couple of weeks ago) in the worst country for Metal, and that it was hard as hell to get the band where it is now, knowing (and myself only), really knowing what I had to go through to get gigs, tours, record labels, equipment, etc…

How important is the artwork to stand out among all the releases that come out every week?

-Quality and honestly is the most important thing in just about everything. Same goes to the artwork – it is really important to have eye-catching art, yet it being something that represents the band.

What future is there for the band?

-Not sure, really…will just see how it goes. I have some ideas for the 3rd full-length, but that won’t be before 2014…until then, we will see what will happen. HAIL CHAOS!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.funeralwedding.com

Image

By funeralwedding

New material known to those Swedes The Gardnerz. Following the same proposal the first cd, or 50% death, 50% doom.
Do not Look Back opens this cd as a rock old school death, some slower passages and even some vocalizations more "clean" are found in the band and to a certain "groove", but what prevails is the rot in good meaning is clear.
A Horrible Disease has taken more doom, found some vocal "throaty mezzo" which reminds us Sentenced in its middle phase.
A detail is unhealthy for the part where we find the vocal folds that were very interesting ... "Speak, Hear, Fear this false king" .
And another detail is to the guitar solos, which were well constructed metrically, showing that guitarist Wilhelm did his homework.
Now tell me what is this cover for Transilvanian Hunger Dark Throne? A version acútisca and that includes the participation of Paulina Strihavka, and that was great that way and at least different from the version esporrenta masters of raw black metal.
After the lull of the previous track, back to old school death with It All Fades , which also has some backing vocals of Paulina, giving a sinister mood to the music. The strength of Niclas guttural guitars mark and weight of this age, beyond that of traditional soil death bands of the 90s.
Melatonin follows a line more doom and rhythmic variations are well built. Ranging from heavy guitars and clean guitars are accompanied by drum casings that give a touch to her introspective.
And we have to quit Erasing Bad Specimen following as a continuation of the previous track, this has a certain groove and even some clean vocals are encontadas and very nice result.
It is worth mentioning here the kitchen very cohesive composed by Francisco Martin and the new drummer Vedran Bencic.
Contact the banda and get this new material because worth every penny invested.

DESULTOR (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Nope... But you can enjoy these songs instead:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y12_Nqi9XLc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17pHglBz4is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3JRdDRyehQ

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

The lyrics is about life and choices we make... There is no right or wrong, just different perspectives. Our first album is mostly about the dark side of life. With great pain comes great truth... How else will we learn?

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

Terrible... Just... Terrible... We hope to get our first tour next year in spring, bands have already asked us if they can support us (pretty famous bands too). But since that money rules this business It's really impossible for us to get out there and gig, because we have no money and I also just recently got fired from my day job too, so it's even worse than before. We hope that anyone can help us financial or any possible way to get us out there to gig, we are so frustrated right now we can't gig because they want us to pay prices we have never heard of or seen that kind of amount of money in our entire lives! For what... One week tour? Like I said... We are hoping for a miracle to happened next spring since that alot of bands wants to tour with us.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

I play on Randall transistor, because I like the brutal sound from transistors and not that clean digital sound from valves or tubes or whatever the english name is for it... We don't like pipe rigs like Engl. And the drums are put together with alot of scotch tape and different cymbals and stuff that has been given away from friends who doesn't need the parts anymore.
We come from very poor hoods in Sweden and not from the rich areas where the most of the metal elite in sweden comes from... They are the only ones who has afford with expensive instruments which is pretty sad because they are the ones who sucks most of all playing metal. Metal is about real darkness, pain and misery... How the fuck can you get inspiration fore that if the worst thing has happened to your life is your Ferrari got a flat tire? Sorry... I really despise metal wannabes... They are so many today... And rules the entire market today and have make it impossible for musicians like us to get out there and show the world.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Not that many metalbands actually, it's no idea to write it down here since that you probably have never heard of them... Magazines and stupid ppl have compared us with David Townsed and Forever Eternity and other bands we have never heard of. I guess it's because it's closest to our sound, yet it's so far away from our sound. The metalbands that has influenced us are bands like Nile, Absu, Shining and Nevermore... All the other influences we have for our music does not come from metal at all. You will see a big difference in next album if we ever get afford to do it.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Hahahaha yes I do! It was only one person in the audience and that person was my brother's girlfriend.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

We love to play and create music... We don't know why we feel so passionate about it, we just do... And that's why we play in a band, simple as that.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

We feel joy and happiness there are actually people who likes us so much they have to share it to the rest of the world... It's an honour.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

It's hard to tell... But I would say Aeon and Mayhem was really fun to play with.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

Metal is evolving like anything else and that's how the metal scene looks today... We don't know much about the new styles of metal but we have seen the metal image today is sidebang hair-styles and more make up to the guys... We know we're not so good following these new trends, but we are'nt so interested in that... We just loves to play metal in our own way and if people don't like it, that's their problem.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

Always the new ones... But in the end, we love to play all the songs equally much.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

Playing video games, shoot some pool, meet friends, playing soccer, partying, fishing, watch HBO series, meet women, go to concerts, basketball, bike riding, meditation, fool around on the internet and much more.

13. Your biggest band moment?

Releasing the debut album. It took us two years to have it released when we recorded it back in 2010. The studio wanted us to pay more and more every time we payed them the full amount... They just changed the price every time we payed them, and when we payed them they suddenly "disappeared" and none of us could get any answers except after several months of hard work of calling, mailing, texting and so on and then we finally got an answer from them, and the answer was they want even more money than we agreed from the beginning. And every time we payed them the amount they asked for, they disappeared and did the same thing over and over again in two years and asked for more money... What could we do? It was an horrible nightmare.. There where lots of times we thought it will never be released... But in the end after several loans from the bank, giving away my precious guitar (the guitar alone is worth more than what we should payed in the beginning) to them because they demand it and I also gave away all my savings and money, then they finally agreed to release it after two years! And that was the happiest moment in our lives!

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

The metal genre suffers today like all the other musical genres or any form of art... We live in very dark ages today so people have hard time to find good inspiration I guess. That's why we got only remakes on the movies today like "Addams Family 3D" or "Batman vs Superman" because they have run out of ideas... I have seen that lack of inspiration in art, music and movies, basically everywhere... That's why we have today thousands and thousands metalbands that copies other metalbands... Why listen to the copy when you can hear the original and the real thing? People or so lost today I don't think the chances are that big anymore they will use their own mind and imagination to create something of their own... Like I said, we live in a very dark age right now.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

I checked a list of different spider species from a friend of mine who's an expert in that area. And I found a spider on that list called "Liphistious Desultor", and I thought Desultor would be a great name for the band! Bandnames doesn't have to mean something particular... It's like peoples name for example "Brian", it doesn't mean anything.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

I still have alot of financial difficulties from the album costs... And now that I also recently got fired from my job I try to fight every day to find some food and not get homeless, which will probably happen soon... So my priorities is to survive in the moment right now, but when I pass this we will record a second album (which we are working on right now) and play metal you have never heard of before... It will be more epic than the first album, I guarantee it. We will use a whole bunch of new instruments and stuff that will chock alot of people in the way they didn't know it was possible you to write metal in that sort of way. I really really really hope we can do that sometime in near future, that's my biggest dream right now.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by pestwebzine

Image

By Adrian

Abyss Records pushed this record really hard making it a highly expected come-back from one of the first bands of Norwegian Black Death Metal. Fester was formed in the end '80's and was active in the first half of the '90's but broke-up after 2 full-length releases. The band kind of reinvented themselves by releasing a compilation a couple of years ago and now this third album. 10 tracks, 55 minutes of Doomy Blackened Death Metal that should be very well received by die-hard fans, but I honestly don't think the younger generation will appreaciate this as much. the music is very atmospheric, very somber and grim, but it lack both the speed and brutality the nowadays scene craves for, the tracks are a bit too long to keep your attention high although they are pretty complex. Again, for nostalgics this is a great release, it's a good detachment from the nowadays run for hyper-speed and extreme brutality, an album that bets on atmospheres.

Rating: 7.5/10

SEPTEKH (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

We started out in late 2008. The following year saw the recording of a demo and a couple of months later we recorded what now is known as "The Seth Avalanche" EP (our latest release). After that another EP was recorded in 2010 (Apollonian Eyes, will be released soon!) and since then we have been focusing on our full length (release in 2013!). It's been the same four members from the start to now. And an interesting four years four sure (so far).

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Several. It all depends and differs a bit between the albums. From just an interesting story to some really serious issues where Nils is preaching about the true way of life (or rather trying to bluntly force the message upon the listener. I think). Don't think there is only one single message but several. But since I'm not the lyricist of the band I can't really answer that.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

Really great. Usually people get into it and there is a lot of energy being released when we play a show. But then again, since I am the drummer I don't usually see or experience all the stuff that's going on during a show. If it's a good show and the response is loud and energetic enough it might even reach me and pierce my little cage at the back of the stage.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Nothing fancy. Basic drums, guitar and base with vocals on top (like the lemon on top of a really good shrimp sandwich).

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Several through the brief existence of the band. But there a couple of classic acts that we have listened to a lot long before starting the band. Classic examples are: Exploited, Dödheimsgard, Motörhead, Emperor, and of course real greats such as Iron Maiden and ZZ Top, to name a few! So many great bands out there!

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Yes. It was good. We actually played two times in the same evening so the second time was much better (but technically it was still our first show!) One horrible anecdote though: We slipped one song up and had to abort it. This eventually happened the next time we attempted to play it. The song is aptly named "Nemesis" and have never been recorded (but attempts have been made in the studio...)

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

Why not? No but seriously, many of us (all?) in the band have an urge to play music in one form or the other. Every musician is always looking for that constellation or place where it feels right I think. The triggering factor in this case was a death metal show some of us attended. After that the stars just aligned and crooked twisted paths crossed each other if you know what I mean.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

Not really sure. You mean "Illegally" I guess? Since we are a very small band it can be good exposure and we want to get the name out there. If people enjoy our music that's all fine and dandy. It's a bummer for our record company I guess and people that try to make it work. I understand what time we live in. I do however detest people who do not support bands in anyway. People that enjoy and are really into to the music but don't really appreciate the work behind it. That goes for other creative work as well, not only music.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

Yes..

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

Well it's all getting a bit too mixed up I think. And I don't really have time to understand it all. It was probably easier to have a unique style and a more local sound before. Now there are just so many bands and everything is available through the web. Every now and then there appears an act that has something special and that's what you're looking for. I can see how some of these monikers can get a bad name though. Say that you hear a couple of bands and think they truly suck. Then you find out that they claim to play something called "metalcore" for example. The natural conclusion for most people would then be that metalcore sucks I guess. Of course things are not as black and white as that (well some actually are...) I guess all these genres, sub-genres and post-sub-genres are good in a more historical way. To keep track of which bands became popular and influenced the new acts (and made metal take a turn for the worse). So all in all; I do not really know and it actually has very little to do with the actual music.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

It always changing. Shoot Them All use to be a lot of fun because of the rolling chorus and the dynamics of the song. I also enjoy a new track from our upcoming release called "Vlad Tepes". It really grabs the audience and there is always a chilling and reverent mood when we play it live.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

Nothing. Very mundane stuff. Like making videogames or building a new house to live in.

13. Your biggest band moment?

Probably making the full length album. It's been a long process and we are very proud of it. That or some nice comment online haha. Or if you ask another member; when DIOs guitar player said that we rocked!

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

Can't really say that I know it. There is so much going on. Some things I like a lot and other I find truly terrible. There are many old bands that still release quality albums. All in all though I have to say that there are way too many copy cat bands out there that just don't have the fire in them. Sad but true.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

We found it by chance. It is at least pretty unique and ones we adopted it there was no turning back. It was just waiting for us to use it I think.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

By the end of the year an ep called APOLLONIAN EYES will be released through Abyss Records. (If the gods are willing this will also be the time when the Infanteri Regiment Herwarth von Bittenfeldt No 13 re-emerges from their war torn resting places and yet again unleashes madness upon unsuspecting masses!) Next year will see the full length album (containing 13 tracks) which is another beast all together so be prepared for the grand PLAN! And hopefully we will be out touring next year. We are also planning to do some very special shows in connection with the release next year. Keep your eyes out for those.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by Battlepig

Image

By Battlepig / Claudia

English translation:

The Serbians BANE put recently their opus "The Acausal Fire" via Abyss Records on the dark Metal market.

The song "Bringing The Force Of Aeon" is a very symphonic intro which constructs by discret introduced drums and keyboard sounds. But,with the following song "The End Of Humanity" at the latest it is over with the silence and tranquility. All musical hell is breaking lose! Pitch-black Black Metal with many Death Metal influences is now the topic. A bit moderated by melodic riffs develop now salvoes of hate and despite. Severe doubleblast drumming emphasises the aggressiveness and coldness. Rounded off by distinctive growls this results in an unholy alliance between severity and melody. By the use of very experimental clean vocals from between whiles this weird symbiosis is still reinforced. The partially halting riffs here and there interspersed cater for adiotional sustainability. Also a very successful DISSECTION cover ("Night's Blood") may not miss here as culmination! All these components make the sound of BANE very individual and creative. The all in all ten songs are very energetic and diversified. "The Acausal Fire" was recorded very ambitious on a high technical level which reinforces the positive general impression. Buy the cd. It's worth it!!!!!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can I get a back-story on the band/ band biography?

Yes you may! I started the band in the summer of 2008, I had just come back from a semester studying in Fort Myers, FL, so I had been longing for a good while to create some music. My idea was to blend katatonia and bolt thrower, and as time progressed I started to throw in some more progressive elements into the mix. Bass player Francisco Martín was the first real member that joined the band, I had another dude singing, but he lost interest unfortunately. Francisco and I started to put our debut album "the system of nature" together, we recruited drummer Juan Pablo Donoso to do session drums, and we got Niclas Ankarbranth to do vocals, and this lineup recorded our debut album which we self released in 2010 and Abyss records gave it a proper releases in 2011. Sometime in 2011 Vedran Benèiæ joined the band and we started working on the "It all fades" mcd which is now out on Abyss records. We are currently working on new stuff.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

A lot of antireligious stuff, trying to show the fallacies of religion and so on. So a lot of religion bashing! (fuck why hasn't this medieval superstition not died out yet??) But we try to not be a one trick pony so we have songs about: our over consuming lifestyle (inspired by the book "The Dialectic of Enlightenment"), those nasty pessimists that goes through life seeing nothing but the faults and failings. I would say that we have a very positive message, trying to inspire people to be free thinkers and leave the shackles of superstition behind. And to take life for what it is, sure life sucks sometimes, but your life is what you make of it. And it is up to you to realize your desires. And if you just dwell on what you dislike and what you think sucks, you will never get anywhere, instead of dwelling on what you don't like you should celebrate what you do like. We also have lyrics about, tabloid journalism, my take on the environmental issue.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

Well since there has only been none, I don't know what to say. We have had some serious bad luck with the live situation, stuff getting cancelled. We had a tour around Europe booked that was supposed to happen in September of this year (2012) but that fell through. Since we don't live very close to each other we can't just take a local bar gig unfortunately (not that we have been offered any haha). We really would like to do some / shitloads of shows, but so far no such luck!

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Since we are currently just a recording band (keep in mind we want to change this) I'll list the stuff we have used for recording, I generally use a ltd ec 1000 guitar and a eleven rack preamp. Francisco uses a line 6 bass pod pro preamp, Ibanez and Washburn basses. Niclas uses a Jts pdm-3 microphone and drummer Vedran used a Sonor Force Birch Drum kit on the recording I believe. Vedran is also sponsored by artbeat drumstix.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Katatonia and Bolt Thrower to begin with, but then I guess I would have to say, Death, Broken Hope, Acheron, Funeral, and bands like that. That's my influences, the other guys have others, Niclas is inspired by Nick Holms from Paradise lost and Quorthon from Bathory. Francisco I actually have no idea and drummer Vedran I would guess Mike Portnoy since he is a big Dream Theater fan, I might be off but fuck it its only drums muhaha.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Hm I'm not sure, I think the first real show I went to (if you don't count shit for kids that you get dragged to as a child) was Bob Dylan in Hamburg 1995. My father is a big Bob Dylan fan and that has rubbed off on me, some claim that my love of Mr. Dylan is at an alarming degree, but I don't think you can be a too big of an Bob Dylan fan. He is the greatest in my mind.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

I guess we all have the same love of making music, but for myself it has always been that I really enjoy playing guitar and creating music. For me it is like laying a puzzle, putting songs together. And then see how my original idea changes form when the different members put their spin on it.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

Obviously I would like that every one that download would pay for it, if they like it any keeps listening to it that is. But this will never happen, so I view it as free promotion and publicity. You can't change it and you can't stop it. And if you start taking legal actions against the pirates I think you will lose more then you will gain. I'm still buying albums and I support a lot of the different pay to stream sites for movies and shows (I don't own a TV you see). I think of the dumbasses in the entertainment industry would have started to get with the program with streaming 10 years ago, the industry would look way different today. But the industry dudes were stubborn and try to sue their way out of this jam and now they are bleeding out off their ass.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more than the others?

Can't say since we haven't done any shows.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like death core, metal core and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

Well I guess you have to put things in genres for sanities sake. When it comes to the core scene I can't say I really enjoy any bands, maybe some hardcore bands but that is about it, and let's not forget the hardcore inspired New York death metal scene, that is fucking kick ass, for example Pyrexia and Malamor. And as I stated in question Nr 2 I don't like to dwell on things I don't like, in the sense of when it comes to taste. Why should I care if people listen to stuff I don't like, you know, Like the retards fighting on forums and comment sections saying shit like so and so band sucks, fuck what is the point. Don't get me wrong there is a lot of metal music that makes me pissed off since I think it is so devoid of originality and just plainly suck. I haven't kept up with new metal for the last 10 years, so at this point I'm just a uninformed grumpy relic.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

The John Prine song - the speed of the sound of loneliness. Not that I play it as well as John Prine, but my version is nice just the same. Since we don't play live and we rarely rehearse at this point, the only time I play the songs is by myself to entertain my cats, and try to keep them fresh in my mind. But I would have to say The art of suffering and Don't look back are fun to play, the others are as well, but you made me choose!! Some of the new shit is pretty challenging to play so that's always fun.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

I work a lot, and I study Portuguese, so that files up my dance card pretty well. I also play in a band called Pandemonium. It is mainly the normal stuff, hanging hang out with friends and my girlfriend. I also try to go running a few times a week.

13. Your biggest band moment?

Getting record offers was pretty big, getting the feeling that what you are doing has impressed someone to the degree that they want to risk a shit load of money.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

It seems that metal is growing stronger and stronger, and I think that is a lot of fun. Sure most of the new stuff coming out today does nothing for me, but fuck it, if the kids like it, why should I complain. Music has always been evolving and changing, I would prefer that that music evolves into something I can't stand rather that the same shit gets rehashed. Sure most things coming out today sounds like bastard versions of In Flames and At the gates, but that's fine.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

It is inspired by Epicurus, Nietzsche and the Swedish country/dance music scene. My original idea was to call it " The Gardeners" since the symbolism's appeals to me, but since there are already a billion bands with that name, I decided to go a bit different. I know a lot of people thinks our name sucks, but they will not forget it and, there is only one of us, and I'm pretty sure there will only be one band called The Gardnerz.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

We will be keeping doing what we have done in the past, mixing death and doom, the slow stuff will be slower and the faster stuff will be faster. We have shit loads of new songs, and soon enough there will be a new The Gardnerz release out.
We would like to get out and play some shows, so why not book us for your next garden party or wedding.
Cheerio Wilhelm / The Gardnerz.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by Metal Nobilty

Image

By THE KING OF WAR

Today, I am checking out ABYSS RECORDS recording artist, DAMEONICUS. It opens up with "A Dead Work Of Art". There are loads of riffs going and lots of double bass galloping. It's kinda like slower paced death metal with some melodic guitar work for coloring. Has a great old school feel to it by the end of the first song, and it's growing on me by the middle of song number two. They are applying recognizable chorus parts, showing that a ripping chorus is always a bonus to some of the people on this fine planet who don't go for this specific type of brooding death metal. I like it. Simple as that.

Song three is kicking in now. They are starting to diversify the riffs and rhythms and tempos to keep it fresh while sticking with dark subject material and demonic mountain troll vocals. Uh oh... a menacing breakdown! Always like these in slower DM as it's a perfect time to throw a set of horns up and swig that 10 dollar Icehouse you bought at the show. 10 Dollar Icehouse!!??

Deeper into the long player, they diversify even more with some more of that evil brooding and dark build ups. You know it's gonna jam when it kicks in on the song, "The Hymn of Ubo Sathla". I'm a dorknerdbattlemage for anything like this.. SQUEEEEEE! Makes me want to smash my drums up and tear my guitar up and urinate on hipsters.. YES! And there is a ripping guitar solo, too. Who doesn't love some facemelting shredding on a ripping tune? More please...

Next up, a nice distorted bass intro that seeths into some stellar trill picking and chugging on "From Alive to Dead Life". As the album progresses even further, we get more wall of riffage and power kicking drums and infernal growling...
+++
The Rundown: DAEMONICUS - "DEADWORK" is a slow burning chunk of heavy metal suitable for having a beer to, rawking about and causing mayhem with freinds or especially at a live show. I bet these mofo's crush live. Horns up, DAEMONICUS!
+++
METAL NOBILITY grants DAEMONICUS - "DEADWORK" a 9/10. It's a hella ripping good time.. great jobs, Metal Brothers! HAILS TO SWEDEN!

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

I find the history of bands to be completely boring.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

There is no "us". At one point there were two members on the full length Tyrants and Men but i despise working with other people and prefer to write and record completely alone. For drums i work with the accomplished drummer from Demonical, Fredrik Widigs. Back to the lyrical message. Many of the songs up until now are based on hatred for politicians and the world that is controlled by these disgusting wastes of breath. Also alot of my lyrics are fueled by a contempt for humanity....misanthropy.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

None. TYW does not perform live and im not sure if i want to now. There was a time when i did but the feelings have faded seeing the kind of pathetic attention starved shit shows that are put on. Maybe if there could be some shows set up that exemplified the true nature of metal and play for some genuine fans then i would be interested.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

I play Krashburn guitars exclusively because they are the best in the world!!!! For my last recording "Doom Rides These Mountains" i played through a jcm800 and a mesa boogie tri rec.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

I would say for the first two albums it has been some melodic death like amon amarth and kataklysm along with some hellenic melodic bm like rotting christ and also some satyricon and immortal. Now i listen to and am inspired by more underground black metal like naer mataron, leviathan, mutilation, nagelfar, striborg and so on. Even though im satisfied with our first sort of melodic death/black records im not really listening to or playing melodic death anymore.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

I remember it being a savage punk show deep in the woods. It was phenomenal, dark, and eerie. There were violent mosh pits and a trailer that had been torn apart and continued to be torn apart. Chaos and absolute destruction. I sang as a guest with a band to a song called world war 3 which comprised of me screaming ww3 over and over again. The show ended by some fuckhead redneck shooting up the place and me and my friends running through the woods with equipment. Thats fun, not some shitty corporate crap fest sponsored by scion!

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

I decided to form tyw as an expression of my misanthropy and contempt for the modern world while in deep isolation from humanity in Alaska. Its become a couple different things but has come back to what i just described. Music and writing lyrics are my absolute lifeblood and passion. Sometimes if brings me joy writing lyrics and often i feel it tears my soul apart and makes me grind my teeth down.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

If they are offering my music i sacrificed everything for to be downloaded for free they are not fans and thieving scum. But if they are making promo videos and convincing other fans to BUY my music...they are brothers and sisters to me.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

Never played with any....but im sure i wouldnt get along with or associate much with them. I just dont get along with humans and prefer animals/nature for my company.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

I feel the same about these genres you have mentioned above exactly the same as i do about lady gaga, eminem, or 50 cent. Just as i dont know or dont care about those corporate soulless puppets i dont give a shit about dumbasses that play uninspired and equally shitty music like deathcore/metalcore.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

Our song Tyrants and Men is incredibly fun to play...intense song!

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

No one needs to know what i do aside from music

13. Your biggest band moment?

My biggest band moment has nothing to do with great reviews and features but being in the woods freezing and alone writing a riff that feels magical and links me to something spiritual and hard to describe. These big moments are personal...maybe people that listen to my music will feel what ive felt alone in the woods or desolate warzone...maybe even throwing a molotov cocktail or murdering a politician. I can only hope.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

Its repulsive, plastic, and fake. Its similar to a mega church or a strip mall. No feeling...just a bunch of insects vying for attention. Now that is in reference to what most shitheads think is metal. Followers of pantera, metallica, suicide silence, lamb of god, the faceless...ect. but the true metal underground is magical, archaic, and filthy. Its still alive and always alive. Abyss records has helped that!

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Thousand Year War is an extension of the hundreds year war and sometimes i think it has to do with how much work and effort it takes to make an album. Its like a Thousand Year War.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

A nastier sound....cult music from the underground....more black metal magic.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by nihilistzine

Image

By nihilistzine

Thanks to seal Abyss Records (Canada) by contacting Nihilist Webzine, has come a band Death / Doom Metal with melancholic touches from Sweden, is about The Gardnerz with his work "It All Fades" that give us these types ? a Death / Doom Metal very exquisite, with an atmosphere that is very heavy at times by other immerses you in melancholy as they accomplish this? with heavy guitars, riffs very deep! that upon entering the slow tempos become even more direct! that along with the usual battery tempos of this genre (fast and slow) achieve a very balanced mixture. On one side it has the classic Swedish death metal sound on the other you found a Doom Metal Candlemass style with these influences the album grabs your special touch, another point to note is that in the background vocals have the voice of a woman thing I found very strange considering that it is very common to find that voice in the Death / Doom Metal in its purest sense but that does not detract from the quality material. The Gardnerz with this work but not a Death / Doom Metal Classic style WINTER (USA), manage to collect the heavy elements with melodic elements perfectly.

Rating: 8.0

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Dead Awaken declared war in the spring of 2002. After a while we somehow managed to recruit Jörgen Kristensen, at first as a bassist. In 2003 he was promoted to guitarist and singer, meaning that Andreas Morén picked up the bass and that there was no longer room for Jonas Lindberg in the band. Dec 2005 Adde left the band because he was tired of death metal, He was replaced by Attila Toth...In April Jocke left the post as the Dead Awaken drummer....He was tired of playing death metal and moved to Gothenburg. And there was only ONE man that we decided that could take over the throne behind the drums... Mats Blückert (ex-Abhoth), an old friend of Jörgen. We called him up and he was exited to play. He learned a few songs in a month, then we played at a festival called Mälarrocken with bands like Krux, Backyard Babies, Bullet, Seventribe and Behemoth... After that show Mats become Dead Awaken's drummer for sure. In November 2007 Attila left the band for personal reasons, all respect, He is still a good friend. Dead Awaken kept on marching as a 3-piece and gigged all over the country. In 2010 the recording of the debut album "...Where hope turns dripping red..." begun. During september,in the middle of the recording, the band and long term bass player / backup vocalist Andreas "Fluff" Morén decided to part ways. The recording was finished with Jörgen handling all guitars, vocals and bass.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

So far it's been strictly war. But, as that's been done and out of respect for amongst others Bolt thrower, we have decided to take a different direction. Current fave topics are the dark regions of the human mind.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

Mostly excellent!

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Mats, our drummer, is using a Premier drum kit, Axis pedals and a shitload of different cymbals. I've been playing handmade B.C.Rich guitars and Mesa/Boogie amps and speakers, for over 20 years. Lately I've gotten into ESP guitars and the album was recorded with an ESP NV, with Seymour Duncan pickups. Played that through a Triaxis/2:90 setup, but have since then gotten a Dual Rectifier head. For bass, an LTD Tom Araya bass through a Mesa Carbine M6 stack. Since the recording, I've bought a couple of German made Warwick basses. They've got a monstrous tone, so the next recording will crush! Got some neat little pedals and things, to spice things up a bit.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Tough one. Me and Mats started playing together in '89,some we've got tons of different influences. We both love Dark angel, Pink Floyd, Slayer, Overkill, Motörhead, Immolation, old Pestilence, Bolt thrower, Suffocation, etc. Mats is heavily into Anaal nahtrakh, Psycroptic, Cryptopsy. I currently listen a lot to Devin Townsend, the last Celtic frost album and Vomitory.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

O yeah. XD. My first show was in november -88 and damn, did we suck!

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

When i formed my first band in -88, it was for the love of metal. A few friends started jamming and I simply couldn't stop. Dead awaken had been going for a couple of months when I joined.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

Cool with me. Things have changed and the way to make money seems to be playing live. I still buy CD's. I prefer that format and I want to support my fave musicians.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

Vomitory, Behemoth and Aborted. Great bands and really nice people!

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

People seems to need to label things. There are genres that I personally detest, but sometimes the lines are difficult to draw.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

It varies. We've got this song entitled "Mudhell", which is kinda intense. Usually comes across great live.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

Working, I happen to have a weak spot for survival/horror video games, Having a beer now and then, we're both suckers for nice, Scottish Whisky.

13. Your biggest band moment?

Opening for Vomitory was great!

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

Lots of bands. Young musicians tend to be really competent these days. Personally, I think some bands should focus more on songwriting and less on speed.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

It was Jocke, our former drummer, I believe. He was listening to Cannibal corpse's The bleeding. Somewhere in there, the words can be found.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

Angrier music! Not necessarily faster, but more Death and less Thrash. Here's a clip of the song Mudhell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxJ2r9JvPEo

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.globaldomination.se

Image

By Averatu

What is a band to do. When you first pick up an instrument, its generally because you where blown away and inspired by an album, or a song on the radio, or even because of a video clip of some big hairy tattooed fucker with a guitar/bass/drum kit thrashing away, and you wanted to be that guy, and do that stuff, with the sticks, and the chicks. But as time passes, most of us realize that our hero’s are just people, people that poop, hopefully on a healthy regular 24 hour cycle, and wipe their own Klingons, tie their own shoe laces, pay bills and drive cars.

At this crossroads you have to choose.
1: Do I continue on this path and emulate my hero, start a band with like minded worshipers and produce music in honor of our false idol.
2: Do I attempt to find my own musical voice and produce something that reflects my own unique dark perverted soul.
3: Quit and get a real job, which is the easy way out that will please your family the most.

Option 1 is a cop-out, I see it every day in my country of birth and residence (South Africa). The plan seems to go like this: everyone likes “Rancid Peanuts”, but there is no chance in flaming hell that “Rancid Peanuts” will ever come to perform in the ass end of the world, so lets start a band that sounds like “Rancid Peanuts”. I think its called mimic marketing. Option 2 comes with many pitfalls, how do you create truly original music when everything has supposedly already been done?

On their new album “Deadwork”, Daemonicus seems to straddle a fine line, at times sounding like their Swedeath peers, and at times reminding of other melodeath peers. The production is far better than their last album Host of rotting flesh, and I must say the song writing has also come along a fair deal. Does it blend you may ask. Well to me it works just dandy, a great balance of melodic meets lumbering groovy death. But, at times I’m left wondering if its all too good to be true, and not just a really good cut and paste job, some ‘Dismember’ here, some ‘Hypocrisy’ there, mix well and season to taste.

I’m inclined to give Daemonicus the benefit of the doubt. This is a collection of catchy metal that I will be returning to in future, and a band I’d keep an eye on.

Rating: 7.5: Well, fuck us with a golden dildo. this shit is actually good. Color us impressed.

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

J: The band started in 2007 right after K (guitar) and Tobben (drums) decided to finish their former band God Among Insects. They asked me to join on Bass/Vocals and I did. Then we started to set up the master plan and a few of the things that can never change in the band. 1. We are and will remain a three piece. We are the army of three. If someone quit, the band is over. 2. There is no riff that good that it doesn't deserve a blast beat over it. Then after K mentioned the band on a website there were instantly 2 or 3 smaller labels that contacted us and wanted to release a cd. The problem as we saw it was that we didn't even have one single riff recorded so we said thanx but no thanx and then agreed to. 3. We will not sign a record deal before we have at least recorded 3 demo tapes with at least 9 songs in total. Why? There are to many crap debut albums released just because the labels are eager to sign any band only because of the members previous efforts in the metal scene. We just didn't have a fucking clue how Torture Division would sound and either did the labels. When we started the recording of the first demo we decided that we would try to record 2 more within the year cause that would equal an full length album. And on top of that we decided that our music should be free for download forever and ever. If someone wanted to print their own cd there would be cd covers available as well as lyrics etc. We have now released 8 demos, in total of something like 20-25 songs, all for free available at our website. We have played awesome gigs and festivals mainly in Sweden but also in Norway and Holland.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

J: We write about all kinds of stuff. Some of them are very personal and some of them very fictional and some of them a bit of both. They are violent and dirty. Not always do they come with a message but sometimes they do and then it is pretty obvious. We write in both English and Swedish.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

J: Great. We have done gigs supporting Nifelheim, The Haunted, Candlemass for example. Done festivals like Metaltown (Swe), House of Metal (swe), Eindhoven Metal Meeting (NL), Inferno Festival (Nor) and more.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

J: Guitar, Drums and Bass guitar.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

J: We have been in the death metal scene since the late 80´s in different bands (Grave, Vomitory, Entombed, Leukemia to name a few) so over the years we have so many influences that it is impossible to pick out any bands. If you know your death metal you will hear shit in our music that we integrated to honor some of the bands we like, but it would be boring to mention, take a listen and read the lyrics and you will find out for yourself.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

J: It was a Metaltown festival in Gothenburg. We were invited by the Swedish metal magazine Close-Up and it was totally awesome.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

J: Women

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

J: We want other sites to post our material as much as possible. We hope that everyone helps us spreading our songs, videos etc all over the world. And we release all our songs for free in the first place so for us it is not a problem. But I don't want that to be the case with every band. I want bands and musicians to be paid for their work and all the hours they spend on entertaining people as it has always been. Downloading albums from artists that you respect and like is just retarded. However, there is no solution to this problem yet so all I can say is the old school flyer statement; Buy or Die!!

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

J: No.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

J: If it is shit it is shit.. you cant polish a turd just by putting a fancy name on it. I couldn't care less if a shit band are deathmetal or metalcore.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

J: At the moment it has to be Satan, Sprit och Våld.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

J: Nothing of interest.

13. Your biggest band moment?

J: It is still yet to come.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

J: It seems healthy and alot of new young kids comes to the shows and start new bands etc etc.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

J: I don't know. It was decided before I joined. Never asked.. Good name though.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

J: We plan to record new songs and release them early next year. Keep an eye open at our website http://www.torturedivision.net

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by wickedchannel

Image

By JamesD

Bane’s sophomore effort continues to demonstrate their love of taking black and death metal and throwing in some unique melodies, and combining that with the blasts of rhythm guitar and the drums from the depths of hell. Then throw in that growl and aggressive vocal delivery and this is a band that really tries to put out a very solid record. The Acausal Fire is a good record, but far from beyond a perfect record. Though, I will say for the kind of music it clearly attacks is one of the better releases of this year. All the metal elements shown throughout this cd cleverly balance each other out and come across as solid, and that Bane are a band that need to be taken seriously. The negatives are that towards song 7 is when the cracks start to show and the cd gets weak and seems to feel redundant. I thought the first six songs on this cd were amazing and incredible, with a mix of Belphegor meets Today is the Day passing Amon Amarth.

The sound of this band is all over the map, it goes from symphonic to doom to death metal and is a riff driven band that has some impressive melodies that keep the listener involved in the songs. The first half of this cd flows and has so much dynamics and real power, the second half of this cd sounded like this band was in a race to get to the end of each song and they lost their identities. The inconsistency that really made the band’s sound suffer and hurt the band and plagued the debut record Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness and what they were trying to convey to the listener rears its ugly head yet again and this cd towards the end they start to have those problems and issues again, they just seem to feel rushed and you can tell in the music as the cd is going past track 6, that the band take such a big step backwards. This is a band that when they are focused like on the first half of this cd, really can put out amazing music that will make fans out of anyone who is into this style of music, but when they lose their focus and work at a different pace, really are their own worst enemies. This cd as a whole is such a mixed bag, the first six songs are so fucking solid and amazing. I could hit the back button and listen to those songs all day and night, and be happy. Songs seven and eight were ok to a point, but past that I was not a fan of the last three songs. I like what this band is offering and I am hoping for that next cd to really fix the problems that seem to be plaguing this band. I would say this is recommended to diehard fans of this genre. I did think As Chaos Rises is their best song to date, and for that reason maybe check them out and see if they are your cup of tea.

WAN (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

WAN started in july 2009. At that point we were an unholy trinity consisting of Aganaroth, Isengrim and myself.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

I´m the one who write all lyrics and the theme basically surrounds the great cold north in which we live, and the chaos, evil and darkness that dwells therein.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

We aren´t a rehearsing band really, and we only done one gig up until now. It was rather fucking cruel and well received though, so surely we´ll try to get out some more.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Nothing fancy really. No endorsement or crap like that you know. It´s not what you play, it´s how you play it!

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

We are highly influenced by the old heroes such as Bathory, Darkthrone, Venom, Celtic Frost. I´d say that´s quite noticeable in our sound and style.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Yeah just one show so far as mentioned earlier. It wasn´t that long ago either so we still haven´t drowned the memory in booze. It was a good gig.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

We´ve been in several bands and projects for a number of years. At the time WAN was formed Aganaroth was just working with some solo stuff, while me and Isengrim came out of a recently split up band. We were simply in the same mood the three of us and wanted to make some real old school filthy music in honour of the old scene.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

I don´t mind actually. I think all publicity is a benefit, and the real fans see to it to buy our stuff anyway.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

It was a killer to play with OMNIZIDE. Great guys and fucking devastating music!

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

There´s just too many subgenres and classifications and labeling these days. The ones getting a bad rep surely deserves it, but I don´t give a damn. I listen to whatever music I like, regardless of what genre it might be.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

I can only speak for myself here, but I´d say "Pentagram rockers". A rather groovy piece of devil worshipping that you may hear on our upcoming album.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

During the weeks we have crappy jobs just like anyone else. Otherwise it´s not totally unusual to find us drunk in some studio or party or the favourite pub. We´re also involved in other bands and musical projects which keeps us occupied in different ways.

13. Your biggest band moment?

The recording of our second album. Recorded live in 9 hours and truly a memorable ritual and a fun evening with friends and drinks.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

Most modern metal sucks christ penis! A few great bands appear from time to time, but generally I listen to the same bands today as I´ve done for ages. The old swedish and norwegian scene is still the way to Hell.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Well, we wanted a name suitable to both our music and our minds and appearance. So what better name to proclaim our rough tunes and the four pale old bastards that we are.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

We hope to have our second album "Enjoy the filth" out within a reasonable first part of 2013. We´ll try to get out on some more gigs as well, so keep eyes and ears open!

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by wickedchannel

Image

By JamesD

The follow up to the debut record Host of Rotting Flesh is a pretty pummeling, hard hitting affair by a band that comes across as very hungry and excited to be on the scene. This cd while not inventing the wheel, at least makes the journey it takes us on very exciting, brutal and fun. With Deadwork, Daemonicus made so many improvements from their lackluster debut record, one being the songwriting and the other being the grooves and hooks. This cd is infectious and jumps out at the listener as it goes track by track. The guitar sound on this cd is so heavily influenced by old school 90’s Swedish death metal. One term that comes to mind talking about what this cd offers is relentless. This cd I did not mind the throwback feeling of the 90’s it gave me, because at least unlike the other thousands who do the same thing, this band did not rip off anyone they actually put their own spin and compliment on this and kick your ass with their take on the old school. The guitars compliment the vocal delivery perfectly.

This cd just grabs you by the throat, and makes you pay attention and give it the proper respect. This cd fires on all cylinders and the shock is that there is really no filler on this cd at all. Each song was quite good and really complimentary of the one before it. The song Alive to Dead Life is going to throw people in a loop, they change up the sound a little and try to spread its wings, while the old school fans of the 90’s feel, will feel like they got punched in the face that the band would have the nuts to throw in a 2012 progressive death metal song on top of this retro sound, you have to respect them. I know a lot of people are really jumping on this bandwagon, and I will say that this cd is proof that first impressions are sometime wrong; this is a vast improvement on their debut record. I think a lot of metal publications and people may be placing this in a top ten list, I would say this cd is an impressive record and clearly a sign that metal music is never going to die.

BANE (Serbia) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

BANE was created in 2006 by Branislav (KEYCHAIN, GOAT EATER). Being a one-man band, a Demo called "Unfinished" was recorded in 2007, but never released. BANE then fell into oblivion. Two years of silence and absence had passed before the writing process started to develop again. For the first time a new line-up was gathered in late 2009 when the band recorded a 4-track EP, and soon after, “Misanthropia” was unleashed (which later got re-released). With a few struggles with the new members once again, BANE finally managed to start performing live rituals in the European underground scene in the year of 2010. The same year, the band's long awaited debut full-length album entitled "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness", recorded in HellSound Studio (CZ), got officially released and is now available worldwide on Digi-CD/CD/MC Format. In 2011, the band also took part in the "Black Souls Rebellion" 5-Way Split Digi-CD, and appeared on the "Necrodeath Ritual" Split MC with cult Malaysian Black Metal band Neftaraka as well. In early 2012, the band successfully completed their 3rd European Tour entitled "Keepers Of The Black Flame". Short after, they released their first single & official video clip from their upcoming 2nd full-length album "The Acausal Fire", which was released in November 2012 via US Label Abyss Records. So far, BANE shared stages with many well-known international acts such as Sodom (Ger), Malevolent Creation (USA), Decapitated (Pol), Inquisition (Col), Dornenreich (Aut), Agrypnie (Ger), Cor Scorpii (Nor), Svart Crown (Fra), Root (Cze), etc, appeared on several European Tours and many other Concerts & Festivals in Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Bosnia & Hercegovina.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

The end of humanity in the way we now it, the achieval of complete inner Chaos, setting ourselves free and not be part of any system, religion, and so on. The message will get only to the ones who have the inner black flame burning.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

So far, so good...we had a few European Tours since 2010, and everytime things are better and better for us.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

We unfortunately don't have the money to buy our own equipment, so we use what we get.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

First and foremost - Dissection. After that, more or less the whole Black/Death Metal Swedish scene form the mid '90s: Dark Funeral, Naglfar, Setherial, etc.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Yes, it was in a very small venue in Novi Sad, Serbia (my hometown)...we played as a trio back then, so it was not nearly as good as how BANE sounds today.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

I formed this band back in 2006...just the need of playing and writing Extreme Black/Death Metal, and the passion towards it.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

We are very thankful to the sites posting news/reviews about us, and support towards bands is important in order to keep the scene alive & available to people. Cheers to the true supporters of the UG Extreme Metal scene!

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

Hm...more or less all bands whom we've shared stages, we had a great time. Perhaps INFEST (Death/Thrash Metal from Serbia) - crazy guys.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

I don't know man...I'm too old for that stuff, haha. There are a few bands I've heard in those genres that sound killer, but it's really not my cup of tea and definitely not something that grabs my attention.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

I love playing Dissection songs live. Apart form that, the whole new BANE album entitled "The Acausal Fire" is fun to play as well in my opinion.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

I spent as much time as I can working as a producer - recording/engineering/mixing/mastering audio files. Apart from that just listening to good music, collecting CD's & Tapes and going to as much concerts as possible. The rest of the guys either are still in their studies or have full-time jobs.

13. Your biggest band moment?

Too many to name one...I guess sharing the stage with some "big" bands such as Sodom (Ger), Malevolent Creation (USA), Decapitated (Pol), etc.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

Not too bad, not too good...Too many bands, that is the main problem - definitely there is quantity over quality in the past 5 years, maybe 10. But luckily when you dig deeper, there is lots of undiscovered gold out there...just need to have enough free time for those kind of discoveries.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

It represents the ideological philosophy of the band - BANE, the end of the human race.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

No idea, honestly...probably a 3rd full-length album, but not before 2014. HAIL CHAOS!

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by pestwebzine

Image

By Adrian

I was so amazed by this band's debut demo and EP that I can say this is one of the few bands I was eagerly expecing to release a full-length, and luckily Abyss Records picked them up and recently released their debut. To be honest I feared they would loose their track, but that's not the case, "Against All Odds" is on the same Epic Black Metal path, an awesome jurney through times, a romanticized paining of epic battles that makes you feel and imagine both the intensity of a clash between opposite armies and the sweet taste of victory. I am not disapointed at all by what this band has become, I only think they should deserve more attention. And back to the album, the perfect blend of fast rhythmed Black Metal with more mid-paced Epic parts is the real highlight of Eternal Helcaraxe, and I say this is perfect because everything on this material seems and feels natural, the music flows like undisturbed rivers. I'm so proud to have this CD in my collection and I recommend it to all of you into Epic Metal, it's a must! The only thing missing for this band is a powerful image, here they should step up to their music's level...

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

We started as a four-piece consisting of Markus (Guitar), Fredrik (Drums), Micke (Guitar) and Peter (Bass) . We rehearsed covers mostly just to learn our instruments. After trying out different metal genres we settled for death metal. Later we came in contact with our growler Jonathan and things started to get more serious. We soon won a local band-competition and won free studio time. With that time we recorded our first demo in 2007. This demo was mostly handed over to friends and/or at gigs and never got a proper release through a distro or such. We played some more gigs and then we had some member changes. Fredrik left and got replaced by Markus. Markus guitar position got filled in by Robin, who were only with us on 2 gigs. Robin got replaced by Christian, who Markus has played with before in another band. This lineup is the one on the second demo (Rot. In .Pieces) and the lineup still active. We decided to record the second demo when we had enough new songs. The drums were recorded through a cheap mixer connected to a ordinary tape deck and all other things were recorded digitally. We spread the demo to alot of magazines, webzines, labels and other people who were interested. After a while we got (well... mostly Christian) the attention of Dan Ferguson on Abyss Records in the US, who wanted to spread our demo and release a full length album. We agreed to his offer and started to record what was to become Composition of Flesh. The album was produced by Ced (Studio 2-Takt), shouter and guitarist in the crust band Raw Hate, in about a week. The album then got released through Abyss Records and you should be able to get in most parts of the world. We got alot of good reviews and we got some more gigs and we even got to play at Getaway Rock Festival. We played some more gigs after that and here we are now.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Gore, violence and corruption of the mind. Some songs have messages, some don’t. Some of them are simple, some aren’t. It’s really for the listener to find out for themselves.

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

Neck breaking.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Mikael and Christian use Boss HM-2 pedals for the fat Swedish distortion sound and the rest is mostly ordinary equipment.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Death (old), Autopsy, Nihilist, Entombed, Dismember, Morbid Angel, Possessed etc.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Not much. As far as we remember it, we put our all into it. The crowd was shocked but impressed and we got a nice review in the local paper.

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

We live in a dark, cold land with long winters. We love metal music, so what else should we do?

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

As long as they mention us, it's ok. But it would be fun if people bought stuff too. Especially people who have money.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

The gig we did with Sorcery was grand. Moshing, headbanging and all over bliss.

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

Well it's good with classification to know what a band is going to sound like. As for some genres getting bad rep. I don't really care. It's not like you're threatened at gunpoint to listen to it.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

Usually the newer ones.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

Playing old computer/console games, eating pizza or watching movies.

13. Your biggest band moment?

When we released our first album and the gig at Getaway Rock Festival.

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

There is many shit bands and many good bands too. We mostly listens to old stuff and new stuff sounding like old stuff, and there's a lot of those bands, playing thrash revival, NWOBHM revival, trad. metal revival, etc revival. Thanks to the power of internet you can pretty much listen to/buy/discover anything.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Brainstorming. We called ourselves Abominator on our first gig. But some australian dudes were no happy with that.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

We are currently working on an EP. It’s almost done, but no release date has been set yet. We are also writing songs for a new album. And more neck breaking gigs of course.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.rottinghill.at

Image

By Wolfgang

"Bane" have the extreme metal genre already earned a name and publish "The Acausal Fire," their second album in full length. In Serbia, it was founded in 2006 and came the following year with their demo "Unfinished" for the first time approached the scene. The Full Length predecessor "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" could convince me already and lets hope in this case a least equal output, finally, in between here two years and three split releases. When the troupe was also placed several times on ice, then one may expect of experience and development. "Bane" move stylistically in Blackened Death Metal genre, like a mixture of "Belphegor", "dissection", "Bathory", " Behemoth "and the Swedish" The Shining ". If you only put the symphonic intro behind, the boys break into a known, fast-paced form of the boxes. Highly accurate thresh release the Serbian musician, the riffs keep always dramatic and build a deeply corrosive atmosphere that is broken up by epic, rocking solos. Only now and then the tempo is slightly curbed and one is limited to slow, gloomy passages that will be mainly driven by the guitars. Besides the hateful voice of singer Branislav Panić is brought by the integration of after "Bathory" sounding clean vocals, choirs or with enough variety in the tracks. Thus, it is not too monotonous in sum, because the part of the songwriting I do not feel the complete disc as seamless exciting. Sound natural, the nine tracks - and certainly not the cover version of "Night's Blood", which incidentally is managed well -. Not all alike, but particularly intrusive do have me not presented beyond this aspect, I feel it as bad that the Full Length-drive failed on the length of her somewhat meager. The nearly three minute opening, except the continuing over three minutes Outro "Entering The Paradoxical Sphere" and with the aforementioned cover song remains, originally from not quite 42 minutes a remaining playing time of just over 28 minutes. All of this may of course not to say that "Bane" missed their target, no, because ultimately with "The Acausal Fire" there is a hateful, brute album that has the audience in terms of extreme metal much to offer. After all, on this publication last induction and recovery, which you can listen in fact and constitute separate tracks, which you listen to you. Not only the precise handling of the instruments and the clean recording makes this album a pleasure, but also the targeted production leaves a deep impression when listening. Thus, the silver disc presented in the effective duration of the half-hour in both raw oppressive, including clean translate form, but not forgetting the harsh factor that I personally find to be important in the metal genre. Just a bit more powerful the sound would to my mind have to be. Indeed intrusive earwigs are indeed passed me, but lies with "The Acausal Fire" before a fast-paced, thrilling album that invites you to bang your head, but just bit short. "Bane" remained faithful to their chosen path, have nevertheless continued to develop positively. The 2012er output is no runaway album, but I can say this disc on my recommendation. Tracklist: 01 Bringing Forth The Endless Dark Aeon 02 The End Of Humanity 03 In Endless Silence 04th As chaos Rises 05th Light The Black Flame 06th The Truth Unleashed 07th World Of Desolation 08th Existence In Denial 09th Entering The Paradoxical Sphere 10th Night's Blood ("Dissection" cover)

Rating: 7/10

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) Interview by thecoreofbrutality

Image

By Meowmix

1. Can I get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Well the story of Daemonicus goes back to 2006, when myself (PO), Jörgen and Stefan decided to start a serious band and try to record a couple of songs. We started up as a thrash band actually but we drifted into death metal almost instantly, since that’s the music we all knew we wanted to play. We recruited Magnus (Boström) on drums and eventually Tommi (Konu) joined on bass and we recorded our debut album Host of Rotting Flesh. Nowadays days Daemonicus looks a little bit different since both Magnus and Tommi has left the band. We got a hold of Martin and Johan to fill their places and let me tell you. We have never sounded this good! As I’m sure you can hear on our new album “Deadwork”.

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

When it comes to the lyrics, we like to tell a story. Something that has a beginning and leads you towards the end. Instead of just repeating verses over and over. Our themes are mostly based on horror in some ways. Like in the song “Inhabited” which is on “Deadwork”, it is mainly inspired by a certain horror movie and the story that the movie is based on. But horror comes in many forms and we also like to express our feelings about religion in our lyrics. Since religion itself may very well be the root of all evil!

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

Earlier this year we toured with the Polish veterans Christ Agony, We learned a lot from them and we all felt that our performance was getting better and better each and every night. When we enter the stage we take no prisoners. We are waging a full blown war on stage every time we play and that’s exactly what we have always been about.

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Well me and Jörgen both used to have Engl amps until mine broke down. He still uses his Powerball, but I have gone over to a Peavey 6505. We both had a sponsorship deal for guitars with a local brand, but when I got my hands on a Gibson Flying V, I never looked back. That’s the guitar for me! Other than that we like to keep it simple. We have the boss tuners and to no one’s surprise we use the legendary Boss HM-2 pedal combined with the distortion from the amps. That’s all there is to it.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Of course a lot of bands from the 90’s are a big part of our music and will remain a big inspiration to us, whatever else we are inspired by, since we all love that music and at least I consider it to be the way death metal is supposed to sound. Lots of bands these days are trying their very hardest to play faster and more complicated than the competition. And even though I still listen to that kind of music a lot, it will never be music I want to play. But I’m still sure you can hear influences from modern bands as well. We are not narrow minded when it comes to embracing influences. We just know what we want to accomplish with Daemonicus.

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

Yes I do. We made our first show here in Umeå in 2006, and our second show the day after, in a place called Hörnefors. Which is the town Me, Jörgen and Stefan are from. We played the 4 songs of our own that we had just released on a the demo “Demon Inside” And we also played a couple of cover songs, from Amon Amarth, Grave and even Metallica I think! We managed to get through the songs and we had a good time so I guess we could consider it a success!

7. What made you guys decide to form a band?

We were in another band before we started Daemonicus. But we were only goofing around, drinking beers and recorded whatever we came up with. But somewhere we reached a point where we had to decide either to call it quits or make an effort to create something real. I’m glad to say we chose the latter. And when we started to record our first demo and realized the potential it had, we knew we made the right choice.

8. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

If it is illegal downloading you are referring to then we like to focus on the positive effects that it has. Specially for smaller bands. We get our music out to every corner of the world and hopefully the ones who dig the music will buy the album and come to the shows and pick up a shirt as well! And as they say. All publicity is good publicity.

9. Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more than the others?

We enjoyed the company of the guys in Christ Agony very much, and I think it was a great collaboration we had, where we would warm up the audience to the bursting point and then Christ Agony would enter the stage and finish them off!
But there are lots of bands in and around Umeå that we always get a kick out of playing with. Like Feral or Raging Steel just to name a few

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

Although classifications can be helpful when describing a certain band or a certain sound. I still feel that it is wrong to put labels on music. It should be up to the listener to decide what he or she is listening to. It’s either metal, or it’s not. Simple as that.

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

We have always loved playing songs like “Carnage”, “Unrest In Peace” and “Breeding In Decay” which are all from our debut album. But now when we have a new album out we had to rearrange the setlist quite a lot to make room for new material. I think that songs like “Nothing but Death” and “A Dead Work of Art” are songs that are going to stick with us for a long time. It just feels awesome to unleash them, and we are going to have a hell of a setlist, I promise you that.

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

Most of us have kids and families so naturally that takes up lots of the free time. But of course being a musician these days almost certainly means that you have a couple of side projects as well. Me and Jörgen are trying to get the material together and record a full length with “Sanity of Impiety”. And Martin has “Hate Ammo” and Johan is keeping himself busy with a couple of black metal projects as well.

13. Your biggest band moment?

I remember when we first got signed. That was a big moment for us! We had a big celebration and all. We had so many big band moments since then, like going on our first tour and first TV appearance and many more. However there is one moment that sticks out from the rest. When we opened up for “Asphyx” in Bucharest on a packed club named The Silver Church. And afterwards hanging out with the band and having a good time. It was awesome!

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

The current state of metal is healthy and productive. Just this year there has been so many awesome releases, the list is too long. That has got to count for something, right? 2012 is a good metal year if you ask me.

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

We had such a hard time coming up with a band name that we all liked and would fit us. We had a couple of different names on a try out for a while, until one night I was watching The X-Files on TV. That episode was named Daemonicus and the word kept coming up a couple of times during the episode and I just knew that was our name. I told the guys the following day and they all agreed! It’s Latin and means Possessed by demons.

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

We are currently working on new material and the plan is to record the next full length sometime in 2013, and hope for a release in late 2013 or early 2014. Other than that we are going to try to play as many shows as possible in the spring of 2013 and hopefully do some touring as well.
