Wagner composed some great operas. This is one of my favourites.

Not only is that the only Wagner piece anyone ever knows, it's also the only decent piece from him I've ever heard. I don't know if you've ever actually seen any of his operas, but I simply had to get out of Tristan and Isolde after the first third, or my head would have exploded with a muffled "thump". It was goddamn fucking horrible, and boring beyond words. Never again shall I commit myself to any works of Wagner. And I've actually managed to survive close to 20 operas.

Meh, I like him. Unfortunately that's the only piece of his I know off the top of my head but so far I've liked what I heard.

I think most people are familiar with the bridal chorus even if they don't recognise it specifically as a piece by Wagner.

That's true with a lot of classical pieces. They've been used to the point of exhaustion in popular media.

Remember in Amadeus when Salieri is talking to the priest in the beginning and plays a Mozart piece? He recognized the music but had no idea who it was by.

Empyreal, I highly recommend you check it out. I know you're a fan of The Ruins of Beverast, and BG has got that same sprawling scope and tenebrous grandeur, albeit shrouded in a much foggier, more ghostly veil. Like it or not, you will want to review it.
Yeah, except it's nothing like The Ruins of Beverast.

It's unlikely that the site moderators are able to research whether such items are fake or not, if that's what you mean. It's a general purpose internet auction site, the eBay of Finland if you will.

Well it's an epic-length album comprising both black and doom stylistics, muffled and massive production, sprawling compositions, and a cinematic vibe to its construction. Definitely not a 1-to-1 comparison, but there are similarities to be drawn.

I actually found that quite amusing, but I do have a rather juvenile sense of humor.

Saw Skeletonwitch last night (great show, as usual), with Mutilation Rites opening. Kind of bland, I must admit, I'm gunna have to check out their album to see if that does them any justice.

Eh, the last couple of years my mind has become increasingly stunted when it comes to this kind of things. I don't mind it, though. It's sort of a failsafe for roaming the internet.

EDIT

If you really want to test your sanity, look up the "offended" page on Encyclopedia Dramatica. But seriously, you have been warned.

Seeing it in a still picture is nothing. Even the smashed kitties kind of stuff does absolutely nothing to me. Perhaps it's the knowledge of the ease of manipulating still images.

The video of a Japanese woman slowly killing a kitten with her high heels was something else. When it's in motion, it seems so much more real.

Nope. Still the same blood and guts shock value type stuff that's been cycling the internet for nearly a decade now. If you really want to have nightmares spend a day on the TOR network. There are truly frightening things there if you happen to stumble across them. Actually, I recommend not going there. At all. And this is coming from someone that is completely desensitized by that sort of thing.

I guess it was a lot more shocking for me 4 years ago. :-P You know, I have thought of exploring TOR network, but I have little to no experience with it. And I don't want my computer to get raped.

The only thing worthwhile is a massive library I found. If you want to purchase narcotics in bulk, hire an assassin, purchase parts from an alien spacecraft and find other truly deprived things I won't even mention, well go for it. It really is a fucked up place.

Like, seriously fucked up.

Here are some classical pieces I currently enjoy (not gonna say much because I'm no good talking about high art; also, I'm drunk):
Dmitry Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5 (I read somewhere that this can be interpreted as a commentary on russia under stalin or something)
Franz Schubert - Piano Sonatas 13 & 14
Georg Friedrich Händel - Sonatas HWV 374 & 375
Franz Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsodies (couldn't find a good zootube link but it's awesome and you should check it out)
Gustav Holst - The Planets Suite (this influenced soo much metal, it's ridiculous)
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - Symphony No. 4
Antonín Dvořák - Symphony No.9 (catchiest/most epic thing ever [until proven otherwise])

That should give you something to start with.

I watched a youtube video of someone browsing TOR, and yes, you can actually hire an assassin...... I'm curious though, would you actually get a professional Assassin (for some reason I highly doubt this) or would you just get some jobless nut who kills for food?

For everyone interested, here's a cool little article about it. http://www.infosecisland.com/blogview/1 ... works.html

Probably not even the latter. I bet it's either some ATF/DEA agent, or some kid trying to get peoples personal info.

Yes and no. There is an addon for firefox which works as a circumventor, which is what your thinking of.

The stuff I saw while using TOR wasn't really all that terrible, but I didn't really go too deeply with it. Some of it was pretty entertaining, like a giant library of insane text files from some Swedish conspiracy theorist.

Alright, that's the word I was looking for. I knew it was technically incorrect when I called it a genre, just didn't know what else to say. Also, thanks to the people who responded, especially inhumanist. More suggestions for classical pieces would be welcome.

Here are some things you probably shouldn't overlook:

Jean Sibelius https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpS_u5RvMpM (Violin concerto)
An essential composer in the later romantic style, whose violin concerto is so influental that a violin competition of worldwide renown was named for him.
Robert Schumann https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVkiOor1I1Q (Cello concerto in A minor)
His orchestration skills weren't technically up to par, but his ear for melody was uncanny. This is mainly a fault musicians performing his pieces will notice, and the very well-versed connoisseurs may find his works quite heavy and overbearing.
Then, my favourite from Wagner (I haven't yet heard all...) - I couldn't find the aria I was looking for, but the prelude to Tristan und Isolde will do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Bwl3GYBM3E
Ravel is an interesting composer aswell, one which I'm not extremely familiar with, but his Piano concerto for the left hand left quite an impression (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avj8Uau1kVk). Do not write him off based on Bolero, he has shown his true capabilities in works like the aforementioned.

I also wholeheartedly recommend Dvořák, his melodies are incredible and some of his pieces are driven by them as metal is driven by the riff.
