None of those bands are hardcore, though. Don't know why metalheads are so quick to lump hardcore and crust into one. They're completely different.

the_raytownian took the words out of my mouth, thank you. Call what you want hardcore, but you have to face the fact that Sheer Terror and Anti-Cimex can be called hardcore.

also, you should learn to read. the poster said "hardcore/crust". that means "HARDCORE AND CRUST" not "I'm putting a slash between two distinct terms because I'm under the impression they mean the same thing, and I just like to be redundant". There's no evidence of "lump[ing] hardcore and crust into one" in that post just because they are mentioned together.

Furthermore, not everyone is such a dork when it comes to being overly speciffic with lame genre descriptors... it's perfectly fine to call Infest and CO "Hardcore" music... because, when you get down to the basics of it, that's all the fuck it is.

Finally, I am the resident generalizing metalheads-generalizer around here. This town ain't big enough for the both of us, mister know-it-all!

Also, thanks for the Provoked-related recs, urrbady... I'll check those out soon.

I dunno, I didn't really intend for my post to be so serious :P Nor did I see Siege on your list. The only point I was trying to make is that I see metalheads lump crust and hardcore into one thing, but they're extremely different, I was only trying to help make a distinction is all. I don't reeeally care about genre labels at the end of the day :)

it's all cools bro.
i'm just really irritable and pissy ever since I stopped using SSRI's a while back... :violin:

sorry for being such a bastard (I've been like this for a few weeks now... I seem to get really pissy/hostile/aggressive at the drop of a hat, dunno when the hell that's going to be totally through, but I still seem to have lingering hissy-fit episodes, like, well beyond what is normal).

I've just recently been getting into Venomous Concept. I heard them on Pandora on my Insect Warfare station and I dug em. After a while of listening I thought "this sounds just like Kevin Sharp!" So as usual, my curiosity brought me to this site and it turns they're a side project consisting of Kevin Sharp, Dan Lilker, and two members from Napalm Death!
Brutal Truth + Napalm Death making Hardcore Punk?
Shit's fuckin' awesome. Check it out if you haven't already.

VC is definitely awesome, you should take a look into Primate if you haven't yet. Similar stuff with Kevin, Brent from Mastodon, Mikey from Javelina/Otophobia, plus Dave and Shayne from The Despised.

Was never a Soar Throat fan. Love this album art, but the intro's a bit too long and I don't find myself really enthralled by the meat of the song

sawthroat's indetsory is possibly of the masterpieces of experimental crust./sludge

it was waaaaaaay ahead of its time and still crushes today

most crust bands are still too basic and childish to ever develop enough to incorporate tons of samples, metals pounding, doom riffs and saxophone into a single album length track

bro, they were just copying this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLoIgnf6Nx0

Doesn't mean it's not great, but jeez, that album came out in '89... the "gloomy, post-apocalyptic dark crust" niche was pretty well fleshed-out by that time...

And Siege recorded this years earlier:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zoOsvzXYL8

(not a crust band, but surely you see where I'm going here with the song example).

I was pretty much caught off guard because apart from Axegrinder and Amebix I'd never heard stuff like that, much less in a full track. I've browsed over some Crass stuff but it never did anything for me. The quasi-industrial vibe of Indestroy is pretty intense and it came out in a transitional period for Neurosis also, I don't know if that fact has any correlation whatsoever, but it's interesting to witness the transitional steps of that sound into a full-fledged style.

With that being said I think the album is more interesting due to this transitional aspect that to its own value, it does drone a little too much on some sections and some passages are way too abrupt to work properly. Yet it stands as something interesting in that particular point in time I guess.

Anyone have recommendations for some lesser known bands in the 90's European hardcore scene? I'm a big fan of a lot of the Belgian stuff (Arkangel, Liar, Congress, LoT, etc.) and I've been listening to unhealthy amounts of Kickback lately. Stuff from France would be particularly cool, but anything from Europe is fine.

All I know from France are modern Skramz stuff and a few Crust bands. Nothing from the 90s, though.

Hi, I've been looking for a certain style of punk for a while now, something that matches Alkaline Trio's first few albums. Dark and clever lyrics, and also a certain guitar tone that I haven't heard anywhere else. and not essential, but also taking the time to jam for extended passages periodically would be great too.

it's hard to explain, but I'm mostly focused on matching the lyrical style of this band more than anything else.

here's a few songs from their first couple of albums:

I'd recommend doing some searches of stuff put out by German label, Skuld Releases.
They released a humongous comp with Profane Existence called "Whispers!" with loads of relatively obscure and well-known bands alike, many European, but IDK if many/any were French.

I discovered Akutt Innleggelse [Norway] thru the Cleanse The Bacteria comp, and I think they are really excellent (though they didn't release a whole lot: some comps, a 7" and a demo tape, I believe).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qa_qWtZ4iY

Apparently some of the members went on to form Turbonegro, but that's neither here nor there considering I have no real interest in that band, I just figure it might entice Turbonegro fans to check them out...

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I've actually been looking for the Whispers! comp for quite awhile! I'm always broke when it comes up for a reasonable price though...

The AI stuff isn't really the sound I was after, but it was still good. Will be looking into them more when I'm in the mood for that sort of thing. Thanks.

That's too bad. I was lucky to find it really cheap at a local record store!
If nothing else, it's easy to find rips online.

I'll dig around some more and see if I can find a better recommendation (I'm not familiar with the bands you listed; the AI recommendation was just a shot in the dark).

EDIT: Maybe you'd enjoy Left In Ruins [the one from Italy... there's like 50 bands with that name, seems like. They are from this millennium though, haha...].
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x38MNna3ggw
Incidentally, there's a US band with the same name that do a somewhat comparable style of HC, supposing you have any interest in that. They had a split with a band called Amalgamation in around '97, should you need a point of reference.

At the moment, I'm really digging that crusty, swedeath-y style of modern hardcore. Xibalba, Nails, Harms Way and so on.

Anyone willing to throw some more names at me?

Newer Disfear. While it's bad, it's got the production you want.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiAKgLzj4Rc

Skitsystem always had a pretty gruff guitar tone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzN80VG_ ... re=related

Black Breath for sure, kids never heard that tone before they heard black breath. The video even looks like an Entombed video for fuck's sake.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g74LSUiVyf8

New Tragedy sounds like Ambeix fucking Entombed's corpse

Not really digging the Disfear or Skitsystem. Too much stock dbeat in the sound (not to say I dislike d-beat in general, just isn't what I'm looking for right now), not enough heaviness and aggression. Its the whole beatdown-meets-swedeath package I'm after rather than just the guitar tone.

Black Breath is pretty close though.

Plenty of heavy beatdowny hardcore like Xibalba that's better too.

Weekend Nachos

Unforgivable is my favorite, but Worthless is probably as overproduced as Nails and Xibalba, so you might dig it more.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Cy4Z1dXSZQ

Mind Eraser

got pretty heavy with their Ep Prodigal Son Brings Death

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8PyC-az ... ure=relmfu

False Light

Blown out hardcore/PV

http://thefalselight.bandcamp.com/track/rotting-teeth

Hatred Surge's practically become a death metal band, get their split with Mammoth Grinder (who you might also like)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXqJmQ-Z_UU

UK's Closure might be up your ally. Their recent split with Moloch (an awesome sludge band) is pretty damn heavy

http://closure.bandcamp.com/

Magrudergrind succumbed to the Swedeath fad with their second full length

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGyKkqEgJiA

Long shot here. In Disgust don't have that Swedish production, but are heavy as hell and bring plenty of beatdowns. That breakdown at 0:30 is so cool.

thanks for the recs, I'm guessing you're from chattanooga?

ADD/C and future virgins were interesting, I'm checking out their latest album.

wasn't exactly exactly what I was looking for, but if you have any more recommendations, that would be cool.

Nah, but I live in Huntsville, AL. bands used to go back and forth between the two cities a lot.

Anyway, if you liked those two, you may (possibly... or not) like Sexy, which was a band before Future Virgins. I'm pretty sure they only had one album released called Por Vida:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw8Uepu8m5M

And maybe Dory Tourette and the Skirtheads:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoCJdh6dzzo

and, um... Maybe Black Rainbow (there's at least two, but I'm referring to a female-fronted San Fran/sometimes Chattanooga punk band):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYonjANyYiY

I can send you a rip of a rather raunchy-sounding demo they did in '07 if you're interested.

I guess those are just more in the vein of FV and ADD/C, but that's the closest I can think of to "similar" music.

EDIT: I think it was in this thread that someone recommended Hickey to me. I think they'd make an appropriate re-recommendation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMn1seOv ... ure=relmfu

And here's Forced Vengeance (for the 10th time I've posted it here), just because: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq6wqesP8aE :)

hey fellows I am looking for some speedy street punk with tons of sing along choruses, but maybe with some heavier leanings, and gang shouts if possible. But it doesn't really matter for the last two requirements I just need some good catchy punk to get me through the work day.

Here is an example of something I find myself playing lately: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WatBVrTfqc

Thanks

Haven't really been keeping up with the crust scene for 3 years or so. Any essential releases I should check out? Pretty much the only recent one I've heard is the new Tragedy (which is amazing).

I find the following bands pretty catchy:

US Bombs

Roger Miret and the Disasters

If you think the above is a bit too melodic/cheesy, maybe try:

Loikaemie

Oxymoron

Toxic Narcotic One of my favorite punk bands, and also one of the angriest. Not as catchy as you might want, but heavy, fast and has some good sing alongs.

i was unsure whether to post this here or the grind thread, but anyways :

Are there any newer bands that sound similar to how Morser used to sound circa Two Hours to Doom - that whirlwind of hardcore / deathgrind / whatever ?

bonus points if it sounds like Acme

In general, Im looking for newer bands similar to the original 'Bremen' sound

Doesn't mean it's not great, but jeez, that album came out in '89... the "gloomy, post-apocalyptic dark crust" niche was pretty well fleshed-out by that time...

And Siege recorded this years earlier:

(not a crust band, but surely you see where I'm going here with the song example).

everyday we learn something new

funny thing is i have heard crass and siege (who are one of the angriest 80's core bands i have heard) but never looked at it that way...this (sawthroat) just seemed sludgier but maybe its just presentation and differences of sound/production and the slight industrial sludge/doom touches ....

thanx for the tip

Not newer, but are you aware of Carol? Very similar to Acme.
