Metal heads are a breeding ground for noise enthusiasts:
Crust and black metal turn into harsh noise.
Doom turn to drone.
Prog turns to a freeform jazz fuckfest.

I want to discover new noise artists and I also want to help those wanting to branch out into the genre(?)

I have been listening to the jazzy group 'Little Women' as of late
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vT3pPLzz ... ure=fvwrel

If there is another Noise thread please let me know and redirect me there.

When not many people had the internet (when you could still have fun/wreak havoc) it seemed there was a different more oldschool breed of noise around, I really like complex alien soundscapes and more classic droney stuff like the unmusical side of Tangerine Dream. I don't really like stuff like Merzbow or home made tape/trade noise though I have tried my hand at it, I even found the process of doing so boring. I don't really like any noise made by people from this side of the musical fence.

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=89944 this thread could be merged with yours, as noise has come up many times.

I personally would prefer noise to have it's own thread, but it's ultimately up to the mod's :aww: .
I've actually been wading through the noise rock stuff lately, Guitar Wolf and Butthole Surfer's early stuff but my love of noise is basically all encompassing.

Btw Little Women shit be boss as hell.

I like masonna and sutcliffe jugend, but can't stand merzbow. Never heard any that hasn't bored the hell out of me in a few minutes. My experience with noise is fairly limited as you can see, but more stuff like masonna would be appreciated. Set headphones to full and just suffer the glorious ear rape.

I don't really know what noise is, and what is good and bad, but there's a guy here in my area that does a project called Severance Replay. It's pretty cool. My band played a show with him once.

I've asked this before, but I'll ask again: what is it about noise music that appeals to you guys? I'm not trying to be snarky or anything when I ask, I'm genuinely curious because I myself can't wrap my ears around it at all. It's just...unpleasant noise I'd rather not hear. I have to hear unpleasant noise all day at work, so when I go to listen to some music I'd prefer it be not that.

But seriously, can you guys explain it a bit to me so I can at least understand the genre a bit?

I listen to noise stuff when I sleep, usually; it's great for that kind of stuff. I wish I had a list of all of the awesome artists I've discovered, I'll post them up later. Fuckin' love Sunn 0))) and Khanate, two of my favorite drone acts at the moment. As far as closer to actual noise, I like khlyst a bunch, too. Never got into Merzbow; I tried but I just wasn't feeling it. Something to definitely revisit one day.

The best I can explain it (for me only, not gonna speak for everyone here) is well, I've actually been beating around the bush of noise for most of my life, every genre I got into, I got into almost exclusively for the "borderline noise" aspect of it, so I've been on a one way ear rape train since the start, but why I enjoy it, I haven't even the foggiest, it's comforting I guess, just ass-hat crazy enough to jam out too but at the same time it's soothing and hypnotic, eh, best explanation I could muster.

EDIT; for those that don't have Arsedestroyer's Teenass Revolt, get it, get it now.

I used to listen to a lot of Melt Banana few years back. Having been in the genre for quite some time and their varied albums, the band will be more accessible to you if you're getting in noise/noise rock.

Whilst I'm nowhere near an expert on the genre, I've listened to it on and off over the years. When I first got into it, it was about the extremity - I was going through a particularly disillusioned phase, and noise seemed to express a certain rage that I felt.

Later, it became more of a hypnotic, cathartic experience. I was lucky enough to attend the John Peel Meltdown festival, which featured a lineup of noise artists performing at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London (including Merzbow, Masonna and Aube, among others). After experiencing several hours of pure noise assault, I walked out with a strange sense of being cleansed. It was as if all the cluttered mess left inside my head from years of listening to music had been purged, wiping the slate clean.

So I guess I use noise as a "palette cleaner", like a glass of water between courses.

Noise can be many things. Although noise enthusiasts tend to be less concerned with classification than metal heads tend to be ("This is blackened grindcore not grindy black metal. Get it right you N00b"). There is harsh noise like Merzbow. This is essentially electrical white noise. The other leg of harsh noise would be crust punk taken to the next level. I would suggest listening to the band The gurogeriegegege (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXZ21s71kDU.) there are also bands like Coil and Throbbing gristle. This is much more approachable than the above mentioned artists.
Regarding the person who questioned the appeal of noise: I do not consider noise to be music. Often times it is devoid of qualities that music is traditionally supposed to bear. I do not approach noise as: I want to listen to a fun song that I can bop my head to. There are times when the noise I am hearing is aesthetically pleasing, other times it is not. I still choose to listen to it because I value the experience of exploring the realms that music has to offer. Just as a chef who has grown tired of the traditional, he then tries cooking with flowers to explore the extreme realm of his art.

Inb4 someone thinks the above statements are pretentious.

Gnaw Their Tongues, The Angelic Process, Diagnose: Lebensgafahr and Wold are some that I like. The first two aren't pure noise but certainly have it incorporated in there.

Its like free jazz or really wild Jap-psych or something where you're basically grooving out to this flow of notes. The notes are produced with all sorts of non-traditional instrumentation, but it is still music, albeit in a bit of a deconstructivist form. Do I listen to it daily? God no. I don't honestly listen to Merzbow or Aube much at all. Usually it takes the background while I do something visually/physically stimulating like play Tetris on my couch.

Western music is traditionally focused on pitch relationships, with comparatively limited regard for timbre. Noise music, as the name suggests, is focused on timbral relationships instead, with any structure developing from timbral interplay rather than the harmonic interplay that is the basis of traditional forms (like sonata form). This requires some listener reorientation but if you are interested in timbre you will probably find it rewarding. Thus the timbres aren't unpleasant to the people who listen to this music - at least I hope no one is so misguided!

jute nailed it, in a much better way than I could've in a far less condescending way. Also, Aube is incredible and is worth full attention. Also, jute, new album is amazing, get paid tomorrow and I'm gonna get some hard copies of your stuff.

Socky: go for it.

Frog: Thanks! I'm glad you like the music. I have something interesting planned for my future black metal - stay tuned.

A general recommendation I have for metalheads looking for a gateway to noise and "real" industrial are Dissecting Table's Relapse/Release albums, Life and Human Breeding, which combine noise, industrial, and what I can only think to call synthesized metal to great effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUop-xx_otY

Mauser = fucking BAD!!!

Thank you for that. Probably my new favorate band right now. I hadn't ever heard them before this thread; they remind me a bit of Dropdead from Boston. Always had a soft spot for ultra-thrashy raw noisy hardcore punk. Including Sore Throat; although to be honest I preferred Sore Throat's "Real" songs (e.g. "Horrendous Cutthroat System") to their pure noisecore stuff.

I don't really listen to noise unless it's combined with another relation. I've tried some obvious stuff like Merzbow and it really did nothing for me (although I do like the Sun Baked Snow Cave collaboration with Boris). Perhaps I will give some of the bands mentioned in the thread a shot. What would be a good starting point?

I have a weird relationship with noise music. It's definitely not something I can listen to all the time and can easily find it annoying and mostly like it when it's used as an element of the music more than anything else, like with Distorted Pony or The Men. When I'm in the mood to go weird though, there's nothing better.

Honestly I'm not really the best person for this, cause for me it was always just asking people, "whats the most horrible ear-raping shit you've ever heard?" and that always yielded amazing results,
However if I wanted to kid gloves through noise I'd have to suggest this

and this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d49Zl0fN ... re=related
and maybe just a dash of

Hell this may be noise converter too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27LFm9zHhp8
Sure this is all "well known" but eh, it's a pretty good starting point.

I think you mean incredibly dull and monotonous Dark Ambient, but okay...

I definitely see the Grindcore and HN overlap, considering they seemed to be largely associated in the 90's through labels like Relapse/Release and the burgeoning Japanoise scene, but that's about the only connection I can find.

Most self-described "Metalheads" don't even like HN in my personal experience, though, but that's surely not the case for everyone. Still, seems like the ones who like "noise" mostly seem to be talking about Drone and Dark Ambient, which I don't really consider "Noise" at all (same goes for the vast majority of free improvised Jazz music, and even completely tuneless [but awesome] "avant-garde" stuff like the No Wave band, Mars).

I personally did not get into Noise until I discovered Grind/Noisecore and Punk/Hardcore music. My appreciation for it had not and may never have developed if I never got into Punk music in general... Not to mention, completely un-metal stuff like TG and The Residents.

Anyway, all that personal opinion stuff aside, I am a really big fan of "cut-up" style HN music. Xome, Sickness, Facialmess, Areyfu, etc. are all essential listening for anyone into HN, and easily some of my favorite Noise artists.

Not really. I am a regular poster there, so... you know, BEWARE...

Also, the moderator is basically never present, and there's at least one mentally unstable user who is a friendly but incredibly prolific poster (meaning, he posts constantly, and it's all a bunch of stuff no one has any desire to read).

Troniks/Chondritic Sound, on the other hand, is a huge circle jerk full of people like Mikko Aspa (ew)... I actually think MA users would prefer that board... I am sticking to NG, tho, personally.

Masonna is one of my greatest and earliest influences.

I think, if you like noise AT ALL, there's gotta be at least one Merz album you can appreciate, though... I mean, there's so fucking many... What album(s) did you listen to?

Do you prefer noise with vocals like Masonna or what? IDK many artists that employ his approach, but you'd probably like some of the more spastic/sample-heavy artists like the ones I mentioned earlier.
