I'm just wondering if there are any albums similar to Averse's The Endesque Chants. Any rec's would be great!

I'm looking for a specific type of black metal that is similar to Odem Arcarum, Waning, Secrets of the Moon (especially this band), Cult of Erinyes, Ne Obliviscaris, Aosoth, Deathspell Omega, Farsot. No clean vocals preferred and production similar to those listed.

Examples:
Secrets of the Moon - Worship ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ7NQR6Mbns
Odem Aracarum - Oceans ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b3G5J5Hi60
Cult of Erinyes - Insignificant ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seACKAxWJN8

So essentially black metal that has elements of progressive/doom, but without the typical bathory/hail satan/mayhem style or the garage/fuzzy/lo-fi sound.

Forgive me if I'm way off, but you may enjoy Acerbitas, from Sweden.

Domgard may also be of interest.

So, I came across this band Der Weg Einer Freiheit, and really loved the style of black metal that these guys perform, amazing tremolo melodies, solid production, interesting song structures, 0% of satanic stuff. Can you guys recommend bands that sound like them?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbDttnRV62A Here you catch the idea.

Check out Norways Sworn, similar style and I dont think they are satanic.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WeqaKmEo29M

Also check out Frostgrim, they are a former project of Der Weg.

I listened to the song Lacrimae Mundi and had some nice melodies, solid drums and the production wasn't entirely polished but nothing too raw, I enjoyed it a lot. :-P

Right, well, I haven't heard the latest album. The debut is considerably more grim than Der Weg, but enjoyable nevertheless (much more so, in my opinion).

By the way, check out Agrypnie. It's like a sappier version of Der Weg from what I remember. It was too sugary for me, but then, even Der Weg is pushing it. Then there's the French band Sühnopfer, which is at least tangentially similar to that style.

I'm looking for black metal with good production (no Xasthur-type stuff, more like the latest Watain or something) that still has a lot of atmosphere and creepiness. This request may sound quite vague but honestly that's all I'm really looking for right now.

You might want to check out Infestus from Austria. I know I've recommended them a lot here, but they simply are quite good.

And I might want to check out something from them besides Ex | Ist.

What about some kickass creepy, campy black metal that'd be great for Halloween?

Lunar Aurora's Mond and Andacht are pretty clean in production yet still have atmosphere, especially Andacht where as Mond if a bit more straight-forward.

I need more slow-to-midpaced black metal with meaty riffing like early Samael, Barathrum, W.A.I.L. Holy Death etc. Already know most Greek stuff so don't bother to go there.

Right. I may have a few for you in this regard, depending on how "good" a production you want. Some you may be familiar with I don't know...

Verdunkeln. Not anything like Watain really at all, but has loads and loads of creepy, brutal atmosphere. Production is fucking solid too. Powerful, dark stuff.

Svartsyn. This album in particular is an absolute monster, filled with black, occult driven horror. Most pleasant, and maybe a little less "accessible" than Watain.

Katharsis. Much, MUCH nastier than your Watain comparison, but this is epic. Production is raw yes, but extremely powerful. A religious experience.

Ondskapt. Probably the closest to your original request, and this album is now... seven years old. VERY good stuff. The sublime, insidious lead work here is hideously perfect.

Insane Vesper. This is excellent, the atmosphere is in the detail of the song writing - a writhing, black trance, wiping out any light.

Mortuus. Hmmm... I like this quite a bit, but it's pace is more mid-paced, and unfolds in it's own time. The atmosphere is rather stifling throughout, slowly suffocating...

Ascension. These guys I like A LOT, this demo is nothing short of black metal bliss. Great song writing, stellar production, and that inescapable feeling of something extra. Outstanding.

Bah that'll do.

I just reviewed Eis - Wetterkreuz and I think it might be what you're looking for. It's rather cold and grandiose instead of creepy, but the atmosphere is awesome. Songs are a bit more drawn out (at nearly 10 minutes a piece) but expertly crafted.

I'd like something that sounds as close to Angantyr's Haevn as possible. Long, fairly repetitive songs, fairly slow place, depressing atmosphere, constant but midpaced riff assault, etc. Bathory's Blood Fire Death is another good reference point, but really, if it sounds like Haevn, I want it. I know Mgla already as well, good stuff. Thanks a lot!

Have you heard Pest - Dauðafærð? It's a twenty minute EP, but should fill your requirements, as it's a gloomy, mid-paced black metal epic. Damn good!

Thanks for the rec, Crushed. Unfortunately it's not really what I was looking for. It's more tense/aggressive than depressing, at least to my ears. Most of the other criteria are filled, but the atmosphere is the most important part for me.

EDIT: I think some of the appeal of Angantyr may be the slower-than-usual drumming, I tend to despise ultra-fast drumming. So this would be another factor to consider when recommending bands.

Nothing I'm too certain of, but try these...

Nyktalgia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq2SxzUJ ... ure=relmfu

Prevalent Resistance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r44nFD4ol-I

Sargeist

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcPX_2zxb24

Wigrid

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yobRzJH_CHc

and a real stretch here, but an amazing song with a great build up and really great drums.

my dad loves them. Try dark Fortress, another German black metal band. I guess it might be because of the shared nationality, but their vocalist really reminds me of Azathoth's vocal's, their ex-singer. Give any album a go from profane genocidal creations onwards. On their first on they are probably a lot more melodic than der weg einer freiheit, on PGC they seemed to drop that a little bit and go for atmosphere a lot more.

Nyktalgia sounds pretty awesome, the vocals in particular are excellent, they remind me of the guy from Nazgul. However, Sargeist really takes the cake here; this is exactly what I was looking for. Wigrid was good, but the production was a bit too lo-fi for me and the vocals were a bit much. The other two didn't do much for me. Anything in the vein of Sargeist would be excellent though! I will be looking more into them and I'll check out the similar artists page as well. Cheers!

If you like Sargiest then Horna is essential (main guitarist is in both). The split with Behexen is amazing, but a bit less repetitive like what you're looking for. The Behexen song from that split's probably what you're after. Unfortunately Behexen isn't very good otherwise.

Horna

more what you're after
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJlzs_TkCWs

more punky/metal sound

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISAcdVFCGBk

Behexen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsaaMHEs_Mc

Diaboli

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1VW_jX9Fm8

Dodsferd

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjK-Sw61vwg

Old Deathspell Omega might work. Even up to and including Si Monumentum... they had repetitive songs like this.

This is pretty basic and I'm sure there's already a request somewhere in this thread, but I'm looking for some riff heavy BM more on the primitive side. Nothing too slick sounding and technical but it doesn't have to sound like a one mic recording in a bathroom stall either. Along the lines of Darkthrone's first three,Immortal - Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism, Craft, Cult of Daath etc. is perfect. Old school classics and more recent jams both would be appreciated!

Give Sorcier Des Glaces a spin, in particular this album -

http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/So ... sts/309775

It is a rather new release but has all the markings of an old school classic and sounds just like one.

I've been listening mainly to "Let the Devil In" and "The Dark Embrace" EP, so those I guess. The first two might be good as well, just haven't gotten around to hearing them yet. I've been a bit busy the last couple of days but I will respond to the other recs soon, thanks a lot FM!

The latest Sargeist full-lenght represents something of a stylistical shift in their output in that it's considerably lighter than previous albums, especially the first one. Have you checked out Satanic Warmaster yet? Opferblut might just be your thing, and if you like that, also check out Goatmoon. Also, this song by Horna (which fortunately isn't representative of the rest of their material).

I definitely recommend these:
Baptism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH2iv1qez2U
Prevalent Resistance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXDphpem_hc
Christicide (although their melodies are more clever than merely pleasant) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmdd7w7GT_Q
Sacramentum (generally considered a similar artist of Dissection, but is driven by dynamic, melodic guitar leads just as newer Sargeist) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npdSlcrMQX8
Kvist (though not even tangentially DSBM, I consider them somewhat similar to Nyktalgia) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s80QBT5xfEQ
Totalselfhatred (seemingly a nice blend of what you're looking for: depressive Finnish black metal - it features one of black metal's greatest vocalist as one of the two singers, but that's about it as far as positive things go) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu2-8m9k51E

Some particularly sugary black metal bands:

Agrypnie (very melodic, dramatic style with influences from melodeath and such)
Sad Legend
Mustan Kuun Lapset
Aorlhac (very melodic, melodramatic)

If you end up liking the early Sargeist stuff, check out Teloch - Morbid Prayer and Kadotus - Seven Glorifications Of Evil.

@Monolith: Diaboli seems quite good. That Behexen song isn't bad either, although we'll see about the rest of their stuff. Dodsferd and DSO are a bit too chaotic for me (although I already knew that about the latter). Thanks though, still some good stuff for sure.

@Ilwhyan: Most of this stuff is just too chaotic/too fast drumming for my tastes. Baptism and Kvist seem pretty cool, though, thanks for the recs! I think those "sugary" bands you mentioned are a bit too upbeat and/or melodic for my tastes. Agrypnie was okay but it sounds more like uber-melodic melodeath than black to my ears, and MKL could barely even be considered metal. I'll check out the other bands you mentioned, can't remember if I've heard Satanic Warmaster yet or not.

For both of you, Horna just isn't really my thing. It's a bit too chaotic and I'm not really a fan of the vocals. Thank you both though! I'm greatly expanding my BM repertoire :)

You're welcome, sorry that most of it wasn't exactly your kind of thing (those particularly sugary bands I mentioned aren't quite my thing, either). Maybe you should check out Der Weg Einer Freiheit; it's very streamlined, melodic and clearly produced.

Mustan Kuun Lapset is definitely metal on Suruntuoja and Kauniinhauta. Those are the only ones I've heard from them anyway.

I realized I've not really been listening to any of the "essential" or "classic" black metal. Can anyone recommend where to start with some of the staple bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone, etc, I guess the "1st/2nd wave" bands. I already know where to start with Mayhem as I like the records with Dead on vocals I was just using that as an example.

My essentials are...

Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky

The most obvious link between 80's death/thrash and "first wave" black metal with the second wave of Norwegian bands. huge CF influence. great songs that have riffs and rock, a bit of an anomaly for BM. probably my favorite black metal album.

Mayhem - DMDS
This, along with ABITNS is probably one of the best albums from the 2nd wave. But im of the Attila camp, i think he really makes that record.

Gorgoroth - Pentegram
Simplistic, brooding, raw and amazing vocals.

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Varg's most concise and well rounded release.

Immortal - Pure Holocaust

For whatever reason Immortal seem to get the short end of the stick in this world, I personally love them and this album's their craziest/best work. The Sun No Longer Rises has one of metal's best riffs.

Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi

Emperor - Emperor ep

There's a great amount of other notable bands, and I've included them here in a playlist I made for my blog. please check it out.

These are the "classics" not necessarily the best. But you'd fare well to know them by heart.

Sweet bro, will take a look at all of that. I'm starting to get back into the raw sound of old school black metal after listening to a whole ton of the atmospheric post-black metal stuff.
