I'm surprised how few people mentioned SUFFOCATION.

Cancerous Womb have pretty much nailed having an overtly visceral and provocative name, but at the same time, It's a catchy phrase. Personally if I ever get the chance to musically go down a death-metal road, I'd go for "Foetal Cadaver" as a band name... dunno if bands that don't exist can qualify to be in this thread though.

Remembering some more names that I like....

I've always really liked Anathema. It's a fun word to say, it's kind of pretty, it looks poetic and mysterious, and has the perfect meaning for a (former) doom band. The Gathering is also a great band name. Emperor's hard to beat in terms of power and majesty. Diabolical Masquerade is a killer name, and perfect for the band to whom it belonged. Dark, sinister, theatrical, entertaining.

Black metal bands have the best names. Emperor, Behemoth, Bathory.

I agree with this, and that the "poetic, mysterious" qualities make a good band name.

I find that I really like viking-style names and foreign or tolkienesque-fantasy language type stuff. Like Ereb Altor, Atlantean Kodex, SÓLSTAFIR, Amon Amarth, Agalloch. Goes well with the epic, ancient, organic imagery that I like about the music.

Classic/heavy/power metal band names, like Iron Maiden, don't do much for me, unless they're sleek like Steelwing or fantasy-imagery-based like Doomsword. I'm not that into death metal so the extreme gory names don't excite me, but I can appreciate them for the chuckle.

I can't point out a absolute favorite, but Oranssi Pazuzu is definitely up there. It's a perfect name for the kind of music they play, and it immediately got stuck in my head the first time I heard it. Some other favorites of mine are: Anata, Electric Wizard, Strapping Young Lad, and Flourishing.

I don't like overly complex names writting in latin or any other dead language. Ok, so we can't easily pronounce your band name, but we also don't know what it means..... that's a good way to effectively spread your music, isn't it?

SARCOFAGO! Blasphemophagher. Some of the les legions noire that have those indecipherable long ass french names. Fistula. Goat semen (I mean, come on, how could you not love the name goat semen?). INFESTDEAD. Nunslaughter. Morta Skuld (it just sounds metal to say!) Black Mastrobation (haha, perfectly ridiculous name for this ridiculous band.) Paracoccidioidomicosisproctitissarcomucosis (lol.) I'm sure there's more, but I just skimmed through like half my library.

Sarcofago's another fantastic one. Arkhon Infaustus would be a pretty good name for a black metal band actually

Solely due to the way it can be misread as Nuns-Laughter. And the fact that from what I've heard of the guys involved it wouldn't supprise me a bit if they planned it that way.

Bal Sagoth (majestic and somewhat mysterious with an epic feel)
Carnivore (gritty, aggressive, violent)
ManOwaR (perfect name I'd say and bad ass for sure. I mean "Man of War", come on - says it all)
Bolt Thrower (this just sounds like canons going off)
Skyforger (thunderous, pounding, strong)

Wolves In The Throne Room (cool imagery, and it's a nice piece of vitriol against those in power)
Blut Aus Nord (I have an interest in my heathen heritage)
Death In June (just sounds so poetic, and somehow just "works" for DiJ's music)
Godflesh (I like psychedelic mushrooms and it just sounds badass)
Man Is The Bastard (I am the misanthrope)
Insect Warfare, Ramlord, Martyrdod, Wolvhammer, Thou all just sound awesome, can't quite say why though
Neurosis (I'm very neurotic, and somehow it just works)
Electric Wizard (I like burnout fantasy)

RAGE. Nothing describes their music better.

Winds Of Plague. Too bad a damn Hatebreed-Meets-Suicide-Silence-Meets-Bethooven Band took the name.

Especially Black Sabbath. Sounds very ominous and doomy.

This band has a very interesting name. I'm not sure if it's just to sound preposterous or abstruse.

I always thought Celtic Frost was a bad ass name, also Bathory and Burzum, really strong and dark names that evoke in certain level the music of the respective bands.

There are a couple more that i really like, those catchy words like Metallica, Slayer, Entombed, Immortal, Darkthrone (this is one of my favourites, the logo also sums up the dark vibe)

Opeth is a funny case, the name itself its not THAT good, but the way its pronounced and the logo make the perfect feel to the bands music, awesome shit.

Gonna have to go with Agalloch! It's unique, fitting well thought out, etc.
Also Burzum, Torsofuck, and Wolves In The Throne Room.
