Sounds post-apocalytic and is simple and easy to say. Also has a bleak feel to it, just like the music.

decided to check these guys out just based on that name and I was not disappointed, very cool stuff.

Looking through my iTunes...a lot of the bands I like have weird fuckin' names.

But let's see...

Autumn - short, sweet and simple...a wistful, morose sort of name that evokes exactly what you'd expect, and the music follows suit.
Black Majesty - some power metal bands have silly names like Tad Morose or Custard, but some of them have awesome names, this one being one of them.
Candlemass - Just evokes images of dark gothic castles and creepy candles dripping wax all over the place. Doom as fuck.
Dawnbringer - epic, primeval, earth-shaking heavy metal in name and in music.
Iron Savior - Another badass power metal name. Two badass words put together? Doubly badass name. I approve.
Anubis Gate - How cool is that? Egyptian themed name for spacey prog/power. So pulp it's revolutionary.
Helstar - always a cool name...simple, misspelled in a cool way and two cool words melded together.
Quicksand Dream - dreamy, ethereal name that brings to mind the kind of weird atmospheric music they play.
The Ruins of Beverast - just about as cool, monolithic and elaborate as you'd expect from the name.
Tarot - I've always liked the sort of mystical, occultish charm this name had.

I always liked Slugathor -- doesn't mean anything, but it sounds great and fits the music well. Undergang is a cool name also because it can be interpreted in either English or Danish and be equally fitting. Timeghoul is also a great one. And Hooded Menace is quite befitting their comic-horror style.

SLAYER is probably the best name for any band, ever.

I've always thought Celtic Frost was one of the best names. There's something dark, majestic and mysterious about that combination of words

Darkwoods My Betrothed, Godless North and Dead Congregation.

DMB I know and like, and that name is very fitting for a pagan black metal band. Got one record from Godless North, but don't like it that much. Still the name is great. Haven't heard Dead Congregation at all, but the name always struck me as quite creepy.

Slugathor.

It describes their music perfectly as it's a name I'd give to a fucking tank or some other colossal thing.

Arcturus, Devil Doll, Kvelertak, Lifelover, Mortuary Drape (aaargh!), Red Harvest, Reverend Bizarre, Thorns, Yyrkoon.

The ultimate prize, however, goes to:

Eagle Twin and/or Vulture Industries.

Cryptopsy, Demilich, Earth, Black Sabbath, Death, Thergothon, Skepticism, Asunder, Bethlehem; they all roll off the tongue quite easily, feel really solid, and deliver at depicting the image of the band.
Another one I really like and is incredibly fitting in it's strange aura is The 3rd and the Mortal.

Can't have Belzebong missing either, it's so straightforward that you can't do anything but love it.

Great. Now I'm picturing Tourettes Guy saying it instead of "BOB SAGET!!"

Reverend Bizarre

Probably the best name of a metal band ever, especially for a doom band. Just drips with homage and retro-respect, but at the same times it works so well with the overwhelming religiousness of doom metal. The music perfectly fits the name, a crushing, bizarro-sermon from the pulpit of doom in the Church of the Holy (Black) Sabbath. Just totally metal.

Oh, speaking of religiousness in metal..... Metal Church. That's, like, the only place of worship anyone in here would ever attend.

Favorite metal band name?

Electric Wizard is as cool as you can fucking get. Venom has a simple charm. Celtic Frost is a great, if somewhat silly name.

Favorite ever band name?

The Roamin' Catholics. Or Kathleen Turner Overdrive.

I find those astronomy-inspired names interesting, like Arcturus, Black Hole Generator, Antares, etc...
also Tolkien/LOTR inspired names like Gorgoroth, Burzum, Amon Amarth are very suitable for metal bands, too.

Sarcófago(it's a big fucking coffin, and the root of word means "flesh eater")
Bolt Thrower(do I even need to explain)
Reverend Bizarre(It makes me thinks of bipedal goats dressed in priest's attire)
Skyforger(see Bolt Thrower)
Sort Vokter(Has a nice sound to it)
Hellhammer/Celtic Frost(Again, no words needed)
Khanate(Mongols were very metal)

And though they are acronyms
SABOTAGE ORGANIZED BARBARIAN
GUERRILA INCENDIARY SABOTAGE MUTINEER

ISIS

Short and sweet, looks cool with the repeated two letters, and rolls off the tongue like a hiss. Plus it's the name of a cool goddess and a babe superhero who hung out with Shazam back in the 70's. The band is alright I guess, but the name is greatness.

Dying Fetus.
Maybe it's because it's become quite a fun inside joke between me and some non-metal friends, but Dying Fetus is a badass name. You instantly know what kind of ear pummeling you're in for when you hear the name Dying Fetus.

Abominator, Annihilator, Cryptopsy, Dead Congregation, Deathspell Omega, Incantation and Vital Remains are all badass too.

WORST NAMES (not necessarily bad bands):
3 Inches of Blood
Infinitum Obscure
Prostitute Disfigurement
11 As in Adversaries
Destroyer 666
