ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://www.metalmaniacs.com

Image

By Mike Abominator

Good thrash metal is hard to come by these days. So many new bands jumped on the bandwagon of ugly ass Reebok high tops, tight pants, little vests with all the coolest patches fresh from ebay and even the poofy hair. Even quite a few of the older bands came back and tried another go at it. Most of the bands in both of these groups failed in my opinion. Then again, there are exceptions like the sets at Maryland Death Fest 2011 by old thrashers like Voivod and Nuclear Assault. They both kicked ass! Not sure about any new material that will be coming out, but both of those live sets RULED! Now Entrench have come to join the thrashing madness. They are from Sweden, but have a sound that is totally German. Think “Terrible Certainty”/”Extreme Aggression” era Kreator mixed with a little “Persecution Mania”/”Agent Orange” era Sodom. It has speed, power, aggression, ripping riffs, shrieking vocals and will make you head bang. The pace gets even a little faster at times, into the old Sadus speed, which is always welcomed! I know those will say “why waste time with a copy cat band when the originals are so much better.” This might be true at times, yet there are some bands that mix in their own stamp on the style so well, they can run with the greats. Entrench seems to be a band that has the potential to do just that. I wouldn’t call this album a “classic” but it is quite an impressive debut and all in all, a KILLER thrash album!

”As Dawn Breaks” starts everything off here, and you will swear that it’s 1987 all over again. It’s a total riff o’ ramma on this banger. Nice and fast at times and also has some killer head banging moments, like in the middle where it slows down a bit with some mid paced bangery, then gets fast again once the guitar solos kick in. “Debt of Sorrow” is second and has some punches at the start that then lead to some double bass mayhem. A break comes and then a ripper of a riff introduces the manic speed of the ripping fast part. Relentless thrash at its best. “Portrait of a Phobia” is a roller coaster ride of thrashing rage that is all over the place and full of awesome riffs. I love the punk riff during one of the fast parts. The speed is more controlled, but is still fucking killer! This is one of the longer songs on here, but it doesn’t get old. “Into Oblivion” starts off with total mid paced banging. Throw in some heavy double bass and the killer mid one/two combination. The slower/fast part that comes with the vocals also rules. It remains pretty mid paced, the faster parts don’t get all that fast. But it is still a crusher of a song. Most of the songs have that “roller coaster” feel to them actually. The pace changes up quite a bit, but it all fits very well together.

“Doubt What’s Left” brings back some fast ripping again. The changes on this album are dynamic and flow so well together. The fast stuff blends well with the mid paced “mosh” stuff. There are multiple tempos all over this album. That is what makes it so enjoyable. Entrench actually remind me of my good pals here from Southern California Witchaven. “Blind Illusion” is next up. The song starts off fast and manic. The riffs tear you to shreds. It then slows down with some prime Sepultura like rolls and open riffs. It then slows down to some mid paced banging. You will find yourself banging your head clean off with this one. This song would be their “video” that all of us maniacs would stay up for back in the day, on the third hour of MTV’s original Head Bangers Ball. The song takes off again with pure thrashing fury. There is an instrumental song “Crossing the River” that is next. This ain’t no pretty, classical inspired piece of artsy music, full of feelings. This thrashes and rages with the best of them. Reminds me a little of the old Metallica instrumentals, just with some more speed at times. Pretty fucking killer! Some effects at the end of the song lead into the album closer “Where Only Ruins Remain”. This banger starts off nice and slow. It still has the same killer and catchy riffs as the other songs though, especially when the fast part kicks in and the shrieks and screams from vocalist Fredrik slash through your ear drums. This song is a long one at over 7 minutes, but it never gets boring and always rages. Great work from these Swedes!

This is totally pounding and ripping thrash metal on display here. The guys can fucking jam, the riffs shred and the fingers are all over the fret boards at times. The drumming of Joel KILLS and he can get fast and attacking, as well as slower and nasty, with the best of them. The production and the sound of this are also old school, but you can hear everything, like those old Harris Johns recordings of the golden era. I HIGHLY recommend this to fans of blazing thrash, or just killer metal in general. Great work by Entrench and Abyss Records on this one!

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

I remember that I liked Bane’s previous album. There was something to that album by these guys that touched all the right places in my metal heart. So with that in mind I expect, if not great things, at least close to great things from this album. I expect to be totally blown away by the sheer power of Bane’s blackened death metal. And it proved to be as good as I had hoped for. This is the kind of death metal that a band like Vader has been known to make. This is the brutal yet melodic death metal that I find so great when it is done the right way. And the right way this surely is. I doubt that anybody into Vader, Hate or any other Polish death metal act of the last years will have any trouble with this Balkan death metal act.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

Deamonicus, Demonic, Demonicus etc. The variation seem endless on the word demon but I’m not complaining as long as each band deliver great music. This Deamonicus are new to me. Just from the name I kinda have made my mind up as to what to expect. If the result matches the expectation I’ll be in for a hell of a ride. If not I’ll have to reassess the situation and come up with a new answer. I’m not gonna go as far as calling this a Dissection for the 10s but I get those kind of vibes from this Umeå based Swedish death act. Nobody will ever be able to touch the grandeur of Dissection but if you just come close to it then you’re on the right track. Throw in some old Entombed and you get a pretty good death metal album. Old School Swedish death metal RULES. I am an addict to this kind of stuff. I can’t seem to get enough of it. It’s in my DNA.

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

There are so many bands out there that even if I get to hear hundreds of them there are still twice as many if not more that I miss out on totally. Sometime I wish that there were more than 24 hours to a day just so that I could spend my time looking up all the great bands in the universe that we call metal. But since that won’t happen any time soon I’ll settle for the bands that do come my way. As with Erupted. This is another Swedish death metal act. I’ve lost count on how many there are of these acts out there. But as a sucker for anything Swedish death metal I’ll take on this one too. This is more mid tempo and kinda Grave-ish in style yet with an old school feel to it. All of a sudden it feels like I’m back in the late 80s/early 90s again. There are so many new great Swedish death metal acts to check out that it becomes hard to keep track of them all. And I seem to like them all. This one included.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hong Rui

The surge of bands playing old-school thrash metal has also included bands that pay homage to bands of Teutonic origins, and Entrench, hailing from Sweden certainly does this well with their new album, Inevitable Decay. The colourful artwork that looks like a child’s masterpiece could easily cause one to keep delaying listening to the album, but looking past that, the music that lies beneath the artwork surprisingly doesn’t disappoint.

The first thing that strikes the listener is the extreme old-school production quality of the album, with opener As Dawn Breaks sees the band not providing any slow buildup that many bands tend to utilise, instead hitting the listener in the face with extremely frantic riffs and a quick tempo. Vocalist Fredrik’s style is a semi-shriek, sounding like a higher pitched version of Kreator‘s Mille Petrozza, and this complements the aggressive music at the background. The guitar tone throughout the album is also extremely thin, bringing albums such as Slayer‘s earlier material to mind. Even the riffing on some of the tracks reek of the Slayer influence, such the opening riffs of Debt of Sorrow, sounding like it could fit comfortably in Reign in Blood. Other times, songs like Debt of Sorrow sees the band bringing in such influences by bands like Sodom.

But it is not all chaos throughout as the band provides some slower moments, with moments such as on tracks like Portrait of a Phobia giving listeners a small break before the madness continues full speed ahead. Guitar solos are also not a complete shred-fest, as guitarists Fredrik and Hannes incorporate some melodic moments as well, such as on Into Oblivion. The underlying rhythmic section of drummer Joel Gustafsson and bassist Joel Sundin helps to maintain the order amongst all the insanity provided by the guitar wielding duo.

The raw production quality helps make the album all the more charming, and unlike many bands that attempt the old school feel through intentionally making the production raw, Entrench manages to do so without coming across as pretentious, and instead makes the album more authentic and sincere, and a blast for fans of old-school thrash metal.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.metal-rules.com

Image

By Lianne Alice

Fester are a 4 piece blackened death metal band from Norway. First forming in 1989, they went under the name of "Heroic Conduct". Known as one of the pioneers in blending the black and death metal scenes together. "A Celebration of Death” is the band’s first bit of material in over 17 years.

Right from the get go it is doom doom glorious doom. This is an excellent start to the album as it is atmospheric without going over the top. As you get onto track 2, you are greeted with the pleasant sound of rain then POW!! Metal to the face! It has a slight scratch sound which kind of adds to the sound. Makes me feel sad and I can't think why. Track 3 also begins with rain but with the sound of crows. Very dark and when it kicks in you are almost ready for a fight! Track 4 is a lot thrashier than the previous offerings, very heavy. Track 5 is one filthy piece of metal and I feel like a filthy girl for listening to it! An amazing continuous riff! The next track is actually quite similar to the previous on except with a bit of sword play sounds thrown in. Think it may be my least favourite of the album but it’s still good, just lacking that one thing that sets it apart from the others. Tracks 7 and 8 are a 2 part deal, the first part being slower and the second faster. The melody is beautiful; this is a very technical piece of work. Once the air raid sample kicks in, the song becomes full of melancholy, quite easily the best song off the album. In track 9 you can almost hear the strain of the guitar chords, making it slightly creepy. Don't know if that was intentional or not. You can also hear a lot of static when he sings. Last track, quite simply, fucking amazing! It has an almost industrial feel to it, a dirty sound and very bassy. One song I would absolutely love to see live!

The sound is a tiny bit grainy, they could have used a little bit more production, but you know what, that really adds to their sound. Shame it took them this long to make a comeback but it was totally worth it. The tracks flowed together beautifully and really built up the hype. I would certainly recommend anyone listen to this!

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD / LP review by http://www.metal-rules.com

Image

By Joffie Lovett

Formed in 2007, the duo of guitarist/vocalist Markus Joha and drummer Michael Ibrahim rapidly evolved over the course of two demos into the boundary-pushing and deadly outfit they are today. Dubbed "Murder Metal" by the musicians who crafted the style, DESULTOR is unique as they are extreme. This is Swedish metal supreme. Masters of Hate was recorded and mastered by Sverker Widgren at Sweden's Necromorbus Studios.

Well here is the first full length album debut from Sweden’s Desultor… …and my GOD what a debut this is! Right from the beginning this is an album that is coming at you full force with some of the fastest blast beats, double bass drumming and awesomely aggressive yet beautifully melodic vocal lines that I’ve ever heard together on one album!

If you’re a fan of Nevermore/Warrel Dane style vocals and lyrics then you will absolutely love this album! It’s like someone got all of Nevermore together in a room during the Godless Endeavour era, gave them an almighty MOUNTAIN of cocaine and said “Right lads! Record an album at double the speed that you normally would!” and with Master of Hate, Desultor have done that and then some! Every song on the album is just an absolute unrelenting pounding chaotic wall of Metal sound which for any fan of awesomely fast and heavy but also more importantly melodic Heavy Metal like me would absolutely love!

Track highlights from the album is most definitely And So We Bleed that sounds like it could easily be some kind of unreleased Nevermore track from their Godless Endeavour era like I was talking about before. The Luxury of Pain also features an almost Black Metal style intro that just sounds heavy as all FUCK! And the track that starts the whole album off ‘Black Monday’ is something that will quite simply rip your fucking face off and scream into your bleeding eyes! Pure bliss! :-D

This is an album unlike anything I’ve really heard before, for all intents and purposes the music of the backing band is fast paced, a lot of blast beats and double bass pedalling that even I as a drummer can’t work out how this guy is doing it as fast as he is! (please teach me! :-P) and some fucking heavy riffs that wouldn’t be out of place on a pretty heavy Death or Black Metal release, but on the flip side all accompanied by some amazingly brilliant melodic vocals throughout by Markus Joha, the likes of which I have not heard since first hearing Warrel Dane’s unique voice way back when.

I am really almost tempted to give this album 5 out of 5 but as it’s a debut album, I’m going to keep it at 4.5 for now in order to encourage them to do even better with the next release! ;-D But for all intents and purposes this IS by far and away an album that every Metal fan needs to check out. If this album is not somewhere high up in the best releases of 2012 when the Metal Rules folk get together at the end of the year then you can state my opinion now that it would be a fucking crime not to acknowledge these guys!

A fucking breath taking debut album from a frankly jaw droppingly promising band! If you are a fan of nice and heavy fast Metal in the form of Nevermore, Warrel Dane, Zyklon, Strapping Young Lad, Dethklok and the like then you fucking OWE it to yourself to check out this album and have your fucking ears destroyed!

Let’s get you guys out there touring and at some festivals so we can hear this music destroy the fucking place!

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hong Rui

Hot on the heels of their drunken rampage in the form of their 2010 EP, Six Pack Witchcraft, Maax this year releases their second full length album, Unholy Rock & Roll. Six Pack Witchcraft already shows the band’s indulging in a fun-filled blasphemous journey, with the 5 new tracks leaving fans of the band, black metal and rock & roll in general craving for more.

The difference in production quality compared to Six Pack Witchcraft is immediately noticeable as Unholy Rock & Roll begins with Coldest Steel, and there is a notable increase in speed and urgency in the band’s music, but once vocalist Tim begins his onslaught, this is unmistakably Maax, with his gruff growl vocal style. The same thrashy feel that was present on past offerings by the band is still present, reminding listeners of bands such as Japan’s Abigail, with a slight reference to other heavy metal greats such as Metalucifer in the riffing patterns. There are even times when the band goes into a heavy chugging section, slowly building up the climax a la Slayer, such as the moments towards the end of Coldest Steel. The scream at the beginning of Fight With Fire further reminds listeners Tom Ararya’s trademark screams on Angel of Death.

Perhaps one of the closest comparison that one can draw to Maax‘s style of music, is the combination of rock ‘n’ roll bands such as Chrome Division, with elements of black metal. The title track Unholy Rock & Roll especially brings out the rock ‘n’ roll and biker side of the band, with the sounds of motorbike engines starting and roaring at the beginning, and the track is certainly a fitting soundtrack to blast to when riding a bike, with wind flowing through one’s hair. The shouting on the chorus gives listeners a fist-pumping moment, reinforcing the attitude and the message of Maax, telling enemies of metal and rock ‘n’ roll that “We don’t give a fuck”!

Guitarists Kyle and Brett also constantly entertain listeners throughout, not only with their thrashy and old school style of guitar playing, but also with the various guitar solos that are littered throughout the album, with the big guitar tone bringing listeners back to the 80s and early 90s when rock ‘n’ roll and heavy metal were meant to be played loud and proud. Riffs on songs like Do What Thou Wilt further emphasises the old-school in Maax‘s influences.

Elements of fun are still retained, with moments such as the belch on self-titled track Maxx displaying the importance of beer. The instrumental track/interlude Purge of Depravity 2 (The Pentagram) sees the band in their more serious face though, with a spoken vocals at the background, sounding like a bad omen and a sign for the oncoming apocalypse. The band’s black metal influences also seep out on tracks like Overthrone, with the track leaning most towards black metal on the album. Lyrically, the band retains their satanic edge with overt blasphemy, though as usual, the band infuses an element of drunkenness and fun at the same time, making Unholy Rock & Roll a fun and memorable ride.

DIABOLICAL (Sweden) "Ars Vitae" CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernandez

Diabolical is undoubtedly one of the bands more quality in its extreme style in the old continent, but unfortunately, since 2004 his appearances have been few and drabs largely due to the hard work of frontman Sverker Widgren in their other bands and his own studies Necromorbus.
addition, these Scandinavian marks 15 years since its inception back in 1996, and celebrate with the launch of new material after his excellent "The Gallery of Bleeding Art" for three years.

Well, DIABOLICAL return with "Ars Vitae", an album consisting of 17 songs in which intermingle new recordings and songs recorded live.

All the songs sound better than ever, with production of course, has been made in studies of Sverker, so the band has learned how to adapt their powerful sound to new technologies like a charm. A good example is the live songs have a sound that seems to have been recorded in a studio.
Among the new tracks we highlight "Eye", an outstanding issue that we enjoy in pure DIABOLICAL while in the last three issues of "Ars Vitae", can enjoy an interesting change in their sound with a voice and a style closer to Black Metal.

DIABOLICAL always clear which is a band that never disappoints and although not remove too much material, everything you create is a sublime quality in an aggressive Swedish Death Metal without any palliative.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernandez

MAAX Americans remain in continuous evolution, their first album was a work acceptable Thrash / Heavy Metal Black Metal with hints of old school while its follower EP, "Dawnbringer" made it clear that this band was totally serious. Now, with his novel "Unholy Rock N Roll", want to continue to devastate eardrums with maximum brutality and aggressiveness made music.

From the first issue of the compact, the mission statement is straightforward and concise; Pure Metal dirty and full of expedited ideal for headbanging riffs. Although the essence of the guitar sound are MAAX, other instruments form a perfect combo with its getting completely original sound. On one hand, the bass is audible in a larger than usual while the battery is like a hammer hitting knows when required, without any brilliance. The guitar-riffs, together with themselves, causing the sound to make different changes of pace, but in general, the rate is high and the songs happen almost without respite. Meanwhile, the voice is dirty, hard, rough, all combined to fit like a charm.

If we talk about the issues, we can highlight some as "Fight With Fire", "Rot And Roll" or "Do What Thou Wilt" guitar whose sound reminds me enormously to about MOTLEY CRUE in its principles.

Great new work from a band whose sound is as the result of the mixture of Thrash / Heavy / Black / Rock N Roll Punk and even some of the dirtiest and ruthless.

SINCERA (Norway) "Cursed and Proud" DIGI CD review by http://www.norskmetal.net

Image

By Pestifer

Sincera is a side project with members from fra Fester, Algol and Decipher ++. They play a mixture between black/death and thrash metal.

On “Cursed and Proud” we get 5 studio tracks, where one of them is a bonus track in the form of an intro for the norwegian wrestler Byron Lawless, plus fire live tracks recorded in Sarpsborg in 2006.

The studio tracks were recorded back in 2005, but they do sound fresh. They are manifoldly and well played songs with a very grim and cool vocal. My personal favourites has to be “A Grievers Soul” and “Cursed” since they probably stand out the most from the rest both musically and vocal wise.

The live part of the album continues in the same style as the studio tracks and it does sound good, however it’s not as easy to capture all the details since these tracks were recorded with a handheld video camera. But it still sounds good and it would be even better if they included the video tracks as well.

The studio tracks makes me wanna hear more and the live tracks makes me wanna see the band live. So I guess the album has done it’s job. A 5 on the studio part of the album and a 4 on the live bit, due to the sound, so i’ll guess we’ll meet halfway in total.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD / LP review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Mario Cubero

When you stumble across this band and read the name, you will imminently think it is something completely different to what it really is. I should say that I thought this would be another Bestial / War Metal endeavour for some reason but I was ridiculously wrong! Stockholm, Sweden based DESULTOR is spewing high-energized thrashy Metal which even reach Death Metal levels of aggression at times. Adding to that, when you press play, you will expect some growls to accompain the music and then you will realize the vocal attack is something completely different. Both music and vocals have a subtle NEVERMORE influence to it, which in my case is most welcome, given that I'm a huge fan of that band. Another possible reference point could be the DIMENSION F3H (NOR) debut album. Nevertheless, DESULTOR manage to incorporate some other influences into their music to make it more catchy and entertaining. The thrill factor for me is their natural ability to come up with these unpredictable twists and turns all way through the album. The choice of keeping the songs short, direct, with a crisp crystal clear production were the best they could do to present this debut to the masses! This will hardly appeal to the more "old school only" Metalheads but I think your should check them out just to get out of the ordinary and enjoy some violent Metal played with balls! Ask for their album here: http://www.officialabyssrecords.com. For all further info go here: http://www.myspace.com/desultorsweden, http://www.reverbnation.com/desultor

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by deadvoiddream

Image

By Dale Roy

The Hat keep the old Norwegian classic black metal traditions alive. I never tire of this sound, style no matter how many times I hear it again and again. It is probably only fair that you know that about me ? I worship old school black metal. You can tell listening to this that Hat themselves have listened to and possess great reverence for the old bands on their early works like Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor, Graveland etc. It is just so hateful, cold, cutting you to pieces with cruel torture. Yes I do not tire of their archetypal obscure bm rasp vocals, tremolo picking and hypnotic driven drumming. 'Vortex of Death' is really well done and you can just feel the men behind it are dedicated to what they are doing. I simply can not resist recommending this album highly to you.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.brutalism.com

Image

By Death8699

Well since this band is from Sweden, they're quite a bit like Dismember. But there's more of a reverb/echo sound to the album, especially the vocals. I'd say that the album is best heard like any other album which is with headphones. You don't get keyed into an album as much if you're just listening to it on your stereo. Nothing much new that any other death metal band has put together really with this band, but they do show some promise. What they should've done though is cut out the lead guitars totally because they just are mediocre. It kills me when a promising band puts together good rhythms then the leads are below par.

Some things that were out of the ordinary band was that they included some clean tone guitar work. But the music in itself ranged from extremely brutal and heavy with vocals that were simply aggressive and riffs really fast. But tempo changes were all over the place. I suppose that's good in a way so that you don't get sick of listening to something that's totally slow the whole way through the album or an album that's filled with blast beating galore. One exception I must say about the constant blast beat that was released some years ago was Krisiun's "Conquerors of Armageddon". But with Corrosive Carcass, there are some fast tempos for a lot of the album.

The guitar riffs are really hard to make too much out on my stereo that's why I chose to listen to it on my laptop just to be able to hear everything going on. Now the music is decent and there's a lot of pinch harmonics in there riffs and slow chord based guitar along with the faster tremolo picking riffs. I did think that it's a promising release even though they totally sound like Dismember. But it's to be expected like I said since they're from Sweden. What stood out the most here were the guitars. I think that the riffs were really put together well and there's variety to the music.

Some bands can really hack it when it comes to rhythms and leads, but Corrosive Carcass does not hack it as I've said with the leads. Otherwise I would've given them a higher rating on this review. But let's dissect a little more and talk about the music. The intro riff is pretty fast and the sound of the guitars are super distorted. They are a band though that doesn't seem to incorporate too much technology in their recording. The riffs take a while to get into. They're not that catchy really, but the vocals and guitar go well along with one another. The guitars, drums, vocals and production were all good in achieving like I said that reverb sound.

That was their focus though, put something out there that does make their sound a little more intriguing and less Dismember-like. Even though they do sound like them, they incorporated some things that Dismember really hasn't done too much which is a clean tone guitar. I could be wrong about that though since I only own one Dismember release. I think that they are trying to establish themselves as death metal musicians and were doing something different with the music which was adding reverb/echo to the recording and include guitars that were filled with just so much distortion.

Corrosive Carcass is a death metal band that has enormous potential to write even better music in the future. But for now, "Composition of Flesh" was better than just mediocrity. They truly have a sound heard like no other besides Dismember which is what I've said repeatably with this review. They did need to take out the leads and just focus on rhythms until the leads get better played out. Who knows when that will be?! But at least they're trying to get more known within their genre of death metal. A lot of old school death metal fans I'm sure would appreciate this release since I know that many people that I know already dig this band. Don't miss out on it!

RADIATION SICKNESS was a blast from the past literally. I had not thought of them in 20 years plus until their latest CD dropped in on me. I just had to interview Doug Palmer.

Without disclosing my age (I’m ancient) I remember you guys from the 80s fanzine scene. What made you want to start anew as Radiation Sickness?

-Man I was in a world I did not belong in for far too long. I got back into the scene in Indianapolis and we did a one off show in 2010 and it led to all this. A new CD on Abyss records, a complete discography CD and DVD on Negative rea_ction records. I do not know how it happened so fast. Or even why. This dark underground is where I belong I guess.

When you come back even as an underground band does it surprise you that there are people out there that still remembers you?

-Well us ancient one’s (like us) no, but all the young kids yes. The people that were not even born when we split knew our music. Wow.

I’ve always thought of you guys as more of a grindcore band but the new stuff isn’t as wild and intense as I’d imagined. Have age softened you guys?

-No not at all. Just the opposite as a matter a fact. I am more pissed off with age. I have become more wise and understand how things work. Keep in mind the new songs on “Reflections of a Psychotic past where written in 92 or so.

How much of a political message was there to the band in the 80s? How relevant is it in the 10s?

-Well the message in the 80’s is you could change things. I have not seen a fucking thing change. The system gives you just enough to make you think you have something. Shit ain’t gonna change.

What kind of scene were you part of back in the days and how much has it changed over the years?
-A lot more bands today good bands. We play almost only bars and 18 and 21 plus shows now. Then it was all ages. Same people new faces. I love it.

How much ahs you guys kept in touch with the scene over the years? How easy was it to get back into old routines?

-I was gone for 16 years The balance being back is ruff. Kid’s (family first always) jobs, That is why it took so long to do this. Never enough time in life.

What was it that inspired you the first time around and what influences do you pick from today?

-Deviated Instinct, Carcass, Discharge, Slayer, Venom, Napalm Death. I still love them all today. Today I like Coffinworm, Nunslaughter, so many new good bands.

With so many minor labels out there how do you know to pick the right one?

-I have known Danny from Abyss for 25 years it was simple. He works so hard on his label. Then the same with Mark from Negative Reaction.

What is it that you want to achieve this time around that you feel you missed out on the first time around?

-That is simple one goal European tour.

Is there a future for Radiation Sickness?

-Hell yes we want to play a lot and do as many split sevens as Nunslaughter.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.zwaremetalen.com

Image

By Marvin Marteijn

Corrosive Carcass from Sweden shows Scandinavian death metal, with a delicious hint of old-school. What makes this album different than most Scandinavian death metal album is that the vocals a fair amount of reverb for the sound. The guitars are well mixed together, and the drums are also catchy. Everything is very clearly audible, and sounds quite catchy. After two numbers are the effects on the vocals maybe all that much, but as mentioned earlier, which makes this drive to be what he is.

The biggest plus of this album I personally find that the numbers in speed rather from each exchange. This band is reminiscent of bands like Entombed, Dismember, Grave and Unleashed . A throbbing bass and deep tuned guitars make the overall sound very heavy, the music fits. My taste says that the band next time maybe something can try with less impact on the vocal sound, but qualitatively there is nothing wrong with this band!

Score: 75/100

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) Interview by extrememetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

There is really much going on these days, we are releasing the album oktober the 12th, we have recorded a video for one track that are being released any day now. On top of that are we focusing on booking shows for next year.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?

This release is much more “in your face” and got a bigger sound, being more experimental would not be the right word for it, but we are showing of the confidence we´ve got in recording whatever we like, letting the Daemonicus sound evolve like the dieses it is..

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?

Death, of course, is one of the themes. Either it´s brought up in the way of zombification or molestation, death is a theme everyone can relate to.
But we sometimes have a unspoken meaning to the lyrics, like in “The Hymn of Ubo Sathla” for example, that song is written in metaphors of something else than only the things spoken of. Actually it´s a perfect track for a video in the future!
On top of that we are against all religious insanity in the world of course..

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

The meaning is possessed by demons, the truth told, we´ve all got them when the doors are closed and the light is turned of. Playing live they come out, that’s the inspiration.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

We are very energic, outwardly and live addicts, it’s the reason playing music in my opinion and we are really good at it. Our records are also ways of spreading our music so that we can play more live beyond bringing the listener quality death metal from Sweden.
We made a tour in the Balkans with Christ Agony this spring that were really fucking great over all, really great veterans from Poland. The biggest show was opening for Asphyx in Bucharest, it was an awesome event and a big crowd that was wild, the guys in Asphyx was great.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?

Actually that what’s on top of our agenda right now, the bookings are midway right now. So yes, we are might just be going on a tour in a while. We´ve got inquiries from Australia, but nothing is set just yet. On top of course is the States, we are looking for a serious booking agency in USA being able to bring our music overseas. Our record label Abyss is a great support to us in this work also.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?

The feedback have been really good, those who have made reviews and listened to the released track of our forthcoming album seem to like it just as much as we do. Everyone that´s seen us live tell us that’s the element to bring this kind of music on top, I could not agree more. We have regular contact with fans from all parts of the world, and summarized they love the way we taken classic Swedish death metal seriously and constructed a sound without copying, just letting ourselves being inspired by.

8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?

We all have other projects beside this, it´s important to try different things to be able to evolve. All are in different degree of seriousness.
PO and Jörgen (guitarists) - “Sanity of Empiety”.
Martin (bass) - “Hate Ammo”.
Johan (drums) - “Flagellant”.
and I´ve got a yet unnamed trash/death project with PO.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

We will furthermore lose some boundaries, get doomy darker and somewhat faster. But I’ve got a comforting promise, we will never let ourselves soften up, we´ll rather smash the music in the listeners face.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Old Swedish death metal like Entombed and Dismember of course, and American bands like Death, Obituary, Deicide and Testament. Right now Asphyx, Feral, Entrails and Nile is put on repeat at my place.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Is there a life besides music? Haha!
Some of us got children, they take a big part of the free time. Personally spend a whole lot of time in the garage, building on a motorcycle, a perfect time for listening to some new music.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Keep your eyes open for more Daemonicus news, join our facebook group were we are going to be more attendant in the future. And never hesitate contacting us, we will answer.
Thank you for this interview, it was a great time talking to you!

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by destructive-music

Image

By JOHN DOE

And here we have yet another Dissection clone! In fact, this is an unfair statement really, as Serbia’s Bane offer so much more.

However, after a short orchestral opener ‘The End of Humanity’ kicks in, in a very Swedish melodic black/death style fashion and it’s clear that Bane have taken a lot from bands like Dissection, Necrophobic and Naglfar.

In fact this is very much more a black metal album than anything else. Production is crystal clear, though without losing any of its punch. Slight reverberation on the guitars produces a thick tone providing great atmosphere when the wall of sound hits you. Pace is lightning speed with tremolo riffs, both black and melodic swathed amongst a barrage of blasts and double kick.

There’s no shortage of technicality here, with all instruments performed perfectly to the highest standard. There are moments of beautiful acoustic melodies too which scream Dissection’s ‘Storm of the Lights Bane’.

Vocals cover pretty much all bases, from traditional black metal screams, to growls and everything in between, including some clean vocal passages too. Bane seem to have hit the nail firmly on the head with this album. In fact, it’s really hard to find fault with this release and amongst bands like Thulcandra and Black Horizons, Bane strive to keep alive a sound that so many people love.

Aside from the obvious homage to the Swedish black metal sound, Bane somehow manage to create an album which does have spurts of originality in the riffs, melodies and song construction which sets them a cut above the rest.

Highlights include ‘The End of Humanity’, ‘In Endless Silence’ and ‘Existence In Denial’.

The album ends with a near perfect rendition of Dissection’s ‘Night’s Blood’.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by beyondmetal

Image

By GV

In 1988 he founded these Radiation Sickness, thereafter has been a race to release demos, ep's, two splits and a compiled during idle time is not until now that this full legth edited with all of the law . The music of these Americans the truth not surprised at all but if you can snag as applicable, to the theme from 9 onwards topic is part of the ep "The Other Me-A Journey Into Insanity 1990, now remastered. His second ep to be exact, we go by the cuts belonging to the album itself are emanating from the purest very death-thrash crossover orientation which will be evident later with the passing of the tracks, where a lack misses stronger batteries, and in the court 9 onwards and the 18 songs that make up this extended play, good touches of The Acussed, Discharge or Cryptic Slaughter, very corrosive and entertaining without boring passages that make you enjoy, if you are someone who you like these hybrids and you do not have a closed mind will enjoy it. An attractive edition of a label that is always at hand of good underground.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By hongrui

Swedish death/doom outfit The Gardnerz this year releases the follow up to last year’s The System of Nature, with their brand new EP entitled It All Fades. The album starts off with the high-octane, energetic Don’t Look Back, immersing the listener in a myriad of crushing riffs and hard-hitting drumming. Niclas’ vocals are low and throaty, helping to reinforce the crushing impact of the music, as though the instrumentals of The Gardnerz weren’t punishing enough. Yet one soon realises that this energetic start is just a false front of the band, to grab the attention of the listener as the band soon goes into a doom-pace. But rather than causing a loss of momentum, this sudden slowdown has instead made things all the more intense, with the band shifting their focus entirely on the atmosphere and emotional aspects of the music, resulting in It All Fades being an extremely emotional-laden record.

Apart from the focus on the atmosphere, the emotional aspects of the music are also done through the clever usage of the various instruments, such as clean guitars and melodic lead lines that are aplenty on It All Fades. At the same time as well, the band also displays their songwriting prowess and versatility, easily transiting between the different styles, steering the mood of the listener with the various sections on the songs. Vocalist Niclas is not left out in this display of versatility as well, with A Horrible Disease seeing him attempting clean vocals, sounding like James Hetfield shouting out in agony at times, fitting to the theme of the track. Wilhelm’s clean lead guitars on tracks like A Horrible Disease make things all the more charming, at times creating a nice, soothing touch despite the apparently morbid themes that could be present.

One thing that caught my attention for It All Fades is the inclusion of a cover of the cult black metal classic, Darkthrone‘s Transilvanian Hunger on the EP. With the cold bleak atmosphere being one thing that Norwegian black metal has been known for, it left me wondering how The Gardnerz, as a death/doom band with a crushing and heavy atmosphere are gonna live up to the original, but what the band has done here would certainly surprise many. Rather than completely emulating the original in its black metal glory, The Gardnerz has instead done an acoustic rendition of the track, complete with female clean vocals, giving the track a haunting atmosphere that sends chills down the listener’s back in place of the harshness of the original, and it certainly is interesting, sounding like what Opeth covering the track during their Damnation era would sound like. The band’s ingenuity is shown in how the track manages to fit into the record perfectly, kinda like an interlude in between emotionally draining moments.

The thing with It All Fades is that The Gardnerz has put a perfect balance to the emotional, the melodic and the brutal, and does not over indulge in any of these elements, and each of these moments are put in place with a purpose. The progressive feel of the tracks would also mean that fans of albums such as Opeth‘s Watershed would probably love It All Fades as well.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by misantropiaextrema

Image

By Outubro

When the Serbs Bane dump, the last track, an ice bucket by his death / black metal below with the version of the theme "Night's Blood" of Dissection, no longer need this argument to convince fans of the style. Is that the nine previous songs showed a nicely balanced approach to both styles, a mixture of extreme aggression characteristic of Balkan metal and a penchant for melody, atmosphere and tasteful details and denounced interludes that although shy, leave its mark on the sound of Bane. At least enough to consider this second album of Novi Sad good progress in relation to the group's debut album and at the same time, a very valid proposal for lovers of the rougher side of black metal, or alternatively the more mischievous side of death metal. The balance between brutality, extremism, melody and atmosphere in "Fire The Acausal 'is not achieved at the expense of compromising any aspect, but rather due to the limit of holding each. And the result is, without leaving the spectrum of what is "normal" style, a hard copy must like the death / black metal sound today.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by thisnoiseisours

Image

By James

Fester are a black/death metal trio from Norway. They originally formed way back in 1989 and a quartet and two demo's and two full-lengths between then and 1993, when they split up. They returned in 2010 and have since released A Celebration of Death, which is their first recorded material in over 17 years. Fester as I've already said, play black/death metal but infuse it with heavy metal and jazz touches, so it'll be interesting to see what it sounds like.

Tracklist -

1. Rights of Ceres
2. The Black Tower
3. March of Death
4. I'll Hunt You Down
5. Metalized
6. Jeg Spytter Pa Deg
7. Last Day of Battle pt.1
8. Last Day of Battle pt.2
9. A Face For a Funeral
10. Rites of Mortiis

The first impression I get as the intro to Rites of Ceres builds is Nile, but that might be because that brief intro has a Eastern flavour to it, as when the verse opens out,
It’s nothing like Nile. There's some really skillful drumming going on and the vocals are raspy growls. The guitars can be heard underneath in the mix and sound almost industrial in the way they're delivered. This however, is just an impression based on the first two minutes of a seven minute song. There's plenty of pace changes and the bass guitar does add in some jazzy riffs when allowed to pierce through the thickness of the rest of the instrumentation. There are certainly a lot of ideas and layers at play and though this song is mainly mid-paced, it has its moments and shows that Fester are not just here to make up the numbers. There's orchestral, symphonic influence at times toward the closing bars as Rites Of Ceres flows into The Black Tower.

Fester weave in some cool, melodic guitar layers into The Black Tower, which distracts from those cold, harsh growls. Again this song is mainly mid-paced too and features some nice off-kilter instrumentation. I like the way each song just flows into the next, I think more records should do this, as sometimes bands put silly gaps in between songs that ruin a records natural flow. Well, onto March of Death, A Celebration of Death's longest song at over eight minutes and it has a subtle doom/sludge feel to it, in its winding two-minute intro. At this point as well, the vocals seem more distant and the guitars have come to the fore slightly, along with the bass. Those symphonic layers are back in March of Death and add a layer of sinister feeling to the song, which is nice. It kinda reminds me off some of the ambient black metal I've been listening too recently.

I'll Hunt You Down is a pacier track, with strangely, some danceable drums! Maybe it's just me. This album features enough twists and turns inside it's first four tracks to keep you interested, as you move deeper into it and the songs start to become shorter and sharper in places. Metalized is one on those shorter, sharper songs I was talking about. Despite this, it still features a lot of the experimentalism that Fester threw into their opening four songs. Jeg Spytter Pa Deg begins with the sound of people being slashed to death by cold metal, which fits this record down to the ground. Fester return to their grandiose best here. Still those blasting, solid drums hold everything together well.

Next comes the two-parter of Last Day of Battle. Pt.1 is an instrumental interlude of sorts, which sounds really cool but is also in keeping with the vibe of the record.
Pt.2 is another six minute plus barrage of mid-paced death metal. The bass is more prominent again, adding a good layer of heft to the music. This time, the song features samples of people being killed by warplanes, so Fester aren't just sticking to one era for inspiration. It's at this point too that you realise that this album is playing out a story, and such is close to being a concept album, however not a cheesy one!
The penultimate track A Face For A Funeral is another quickened slab of death. It sounds pretty evil too, with the vocals buried in the mix like they are. It's a welcome change though and prepares you for close, Rites of Mortiis. Now Rites of Mortiis is a real surprise. It's billed as a remix and features electro beats amongst the death metal.
It sounds very similar to EBM or darkwave and is a great way to end A Celebration of Death.

This record may require you to persevere with it but you are rewarded by great musicianship and a few surprises along the way! It's well worth picking this up in one of it's three formats, that are mentioned below.

You can pick A Celebration of Death up from the following labels in the following formats:-

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.canadianassault.com

Image

By Patrick

Radiation originally split up in 92, but performed a reunion show in October 2010, after a great response and the band had a blast they decided to reform. After twenty plus years Radiation Sickness release Reflections Of A Psychotic Past, which is comprised of 19 songs of metal/punk crossover style music. Personally I'm not a huge fan of this style {it's not bad just never really got into it} but I do respect bands that they do their genre justice and Radiation Sickness definitely know how to write and perform catchy, memorable, aggressive songs. They keep their songs short and to the point ranging from a minute and a half to three minutes in length. So if you’re a fan of cross-over style music definitely check out Radiation Sickness.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://www.canadianassault.com

Image

By Patrick

With a name like Fetus Stench you would expect brutal, solid death metal right? Well you would be correct Stillbirth is Fetus Stench’s debut cd loaded up with 9 songs of intense, psychotic death metal. Heavy guitars with some complex riffs and solo's intertwined, the drumming ranges from mid-paced all the way up to blasting rage blasting beats. There are some vicious, angry growls and screams, this is a real nice mix of old/and newer death metal so anyone into brutal death should check it out.
