Go to Hits and Misses at Queen and bathurst. Lots of good shit there. Right next door to a place called Rotate This, which also has quite a few solid metal releases. I was actually blown away by the selection at Hits and Misses.

The website ain't pretty, but it should give you an idea of the comprehensiveness of this place. I very much recommend visiting the actual store for a better idea of what they've got. My metal collection wouldn't be half as large as it is is without this store.

I second, third, and zillionth every word of this post. The place is really awe inspiring. I've only been there twice but both times I cleaned my wallet with easily over a few thousand dollars worth of shit I still wanted just sitting on the shelves. Damn I really wish I didn't hate the city so much, or else I'd practically live there (money permitting of course... I need to hurry up and win the lottery so I can just buy everything there).

I agree. Never actually been there but some friends of mine would go there and buy all kinds of amazing rare shit there. I have ordered stuff from them through the mail.

2nd Avenue Records in Portland, Oregon is really good too. Henry Rollins goes there. ;)

From SF to no farther north than Mendocino... Sonoma where I live is so small it doesn't even have a normal music store.

Have you ever been to Santa Cruz, or is that too far south? Streetlight Records there on Pacific Avenue has some good stuff, if you ever travel that direction (might be a bit of a drive, but Santa Cruz has a lot of other stuff to do in addition to record store browsing.)

I would just take their advice and hit up Amoeba Records on Haight Street (near G.G. Park) in San Francisco- they got pretty much everything and I've found stuff there I didn't even know I was looking for, if you get my point.

Anyone know of any good second hand/thrift stores in the NY/NJ/PA area that sell a large amount of used media, tapes and records specifically?

There used to be Metal Devastation in Phoenix, but I'm pretty sure AZ is fresh out of metal stores now. I know Shirts & Things exists, but that's about it.

I had to triple check the date of your post to make sure I wasn't making an ass of my self. Sorry to break the news but Metal Haven has been shut down for like 2 years now. http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/metal-haven-closing-mark-weglarz-ravenswood-music-stores/Content?oid=1418106

Anything in Detroit/Metro Area? Ann Arbor maybe?

I know Dearborn Music is good for classic rock but their metal selection is a bit thin. I went to Flipside in Clawson about a month or two ago and their metal selection has definitely gone way downhill since the mid to late '90s when I used to shop there all the time.

Or good ones anywhere in Alberta for that matter? I've seen some good T-Shirt shops in Southern Alberta, but no metal CD stores really.

Does anyone know any good metal stores near Flint/Detroit MI? The only metal (True) store I know of is Rock of Ages in Garden City but other than that, I would like to know if there is any more close to Flint or maybe Howell.

Doesn't anybody look in their local yellow pages or online any more? There's nothing even close to a dedicated metal store...they just don't exist anymore. After hitting the Detroit area stores every 2-3 weeks for 20 years, it's getting very tiresome, as most of them have closed up or don't offer too much these days. Here are most of the ones left, and some are better than others (I always encourage people to go, because there's no other way to see if they have something you want):

* Record Collector, Ferndale
Found Sound, Ferndale (new place, haven't been yet)
* UHF, Royal Oak
Solo, Birmingham
* Flipside, Clawson
Hot Hits, Roseville
Blast to the Past, Roseville
* Melodies & Memories, Eastpointe
* Dearborn Music, Dearborn
Stormy, Dearborn
Rock of Ages, Garden City
* Forsaken Music, Taylor (inside Gibraltar Trade Center)
Detroit Threads, Hamtramck
Graveyard Records, Hamtramck

* the better places, in my opinion

CD Warehouse on the South County Side. They have a metal selection there. There is also a store called "Metalheadz" in Granite City on the Illinois side. It's not a very big store, nor is the selection very big either. A little further in Mount Vernon, there is Joe's Records; I would also suggest that place as well.

I typically go here a couple times a month. Steve is awesome and will talk to you for hours. His prices are kinda high, and his selection isn't the best at times, but I always leave there with something good. He even offered to give my band's stickers out for free. I haven't been there in weeks...go there and grab a free sticker of my band. :lol:

Sorry for the delay but for some reason I must have skimmed over this, but I'm from Pensacola and there isn't much. We have Revolver Records which gets in the occasional LP or so (I did find some Inquisition there) and we have The Music Box which is all used stuff and they have a few random things (I've gotten some Blasphemy, Necrophobic, Carcass) from there. Other than that it's pretty much FYE in Cordova Mall - and I know the manager so I talk him into ordering some good stuff for the store.

New York City area, but on the opposite side of the Hudson River (basically, northeastern NJ). There used to be a good one that had a decent selection (if it counts, I saw Crionics - Armageddon's Evolution there once), but it closed down years ago, as did the pretty good Tower Records not too far from here).

There's a place in Manchester, New Hampshire called the Music Mill. It's an instrument shop and not necessarily a metal shop, but they do have large boxes full of old metal vinyls. When I was on tour there I bought Darkness Descends from that place.

You know what, nevermind. I just went to Cheapo last night, word of advice: Don't waste your time with them... That is unless you have $20 to spend on a CD and over $25 to spend on an LP. Even used CD's are around $14. They rip you off, quite badly. Plus, the selection is shit, one little aisle of Metal, definitely not worth burning up any gas you have in your vehicle. Extreme Noise in Minneapolis, on the other hand, I do recommend!

There was a time when you could find a gem or two at Cheapo on Lake Street for about $7, but as far as I can tell those days are gone (I'm not even sure how that place stays in business). I haven't been to Extreme Noise yet, but it's only about a half mile down the road from Cheapo.
