You were definitely overthinking it. I can understand, though.

So today I'm at 84.4kg (186.1lb). A loss of 1.8kg (4lb) since last week. Very stoked. :)

Tracking down band members on Facebook and hassling them about OOP albums can really pay off.

Yeah... indeed. It's hard for me not to froth on this material whenever I dig back into it every few months or so. There's such a depth of emotion and massive feeling of passion and expansive wrath going on in it that I simply don't get from other black metal.

I like Mac McDermott's warmer and more varied tone better than Damian Wilson's soaring, cerebral sort of croon, but that's just a personal preference and both singers are equally amazing in different ways. And there are no songs as good as "Pilot in the Sky of Dreams" or "Slipstream" on the new one. But it is a more consistent album overall, even though opener "Ashes" is probably the best song on it. I really like the detail in the songwriting and how articulate everything is. It's a very mellow album, but the melodies are breathtakingly gorgeous and when the band finally does heavy up a bit, it has that much more of an impact on you. I'm only on my third listen though so who knows how it'll stack up in time.

Also Dead Reckoning is pretty much the only good Threshold album I heard before this. Didn't like Subsurface or Hypothetical much at all.

I definitely liked Hypothetical, but Clone is clearly the better MacDermott album. I actually like pretty much everything they've done to some degree, but actually what I've heard of the latest has left me cold. Wayyy poppier and a lot less substance than the older stuff. Nothing compares to this.

I dunno, that wasn't bad, but it didn't hit me very hard. I think old Threshold is really the kind of music that grows on you with time, but I've given it time and it never really clicks with me. I don't want to close myself off to it totally, but there's only so far the whole "it grows on you" ideal can take a band or album - after a while it's not worth it to keep trying. But maybe someday Threshold's older material will 'open up' for me...

The new album definitely isn't any less substantial though. The poppy vocal lines are actually incredibly well done and the the music underneath is just incredibly breathtaking stuff. I'd encourage you to give the album a shot...even if it's not your thing, it surely isn't as simple and shallow as you may think. ;)

I like Branikald a little more myself. Love the ambient elements. What I like about Forest is the constant melodic pulse in the riffs beneath all the fuzz. The self titled is a little different though, definitely more riffy. Not my favourite Forest album though.

Edit: I really should crack out the Forest albums now. Been a long time since I've heard them, and the cold is a comin' around these parts.

Cheers dudes. Crushed, you will definitely not be disappointed! The Forest releases from Like a Blaze Above the Ashes through As a Song in the Harvest of Grief are all pretty much gold, as well as all the Branikald discs from Varg Fjerne a Tornet through The Strings of Inspiration Sing. Total grower material that conquers you over time with its deceptively simple structures and possessing riffs. Those eerie currents of warm and cold bringing such a spine-tingling aura, all shot through with fucking incredibly powerful vocals. For Branikald starters I'd say go with Hladavzor... excellent fucking album that displays some of the best of both Kaldrad's metal and 'ambient' styles.

Yeah... Raven Dark is an awesome project as well. Verdandi, Berustet av Kriegsdronnet, and By the Wrath of the Opening Wide Eternity are all really damn good.

The only thing is that a lot of the BBH albums have mediocre tracks peppered here and there that don't even seem to fit with the rest... sometimes their track selections seem kind of confusing. That's why I've been fine with just having mp3 versions of all these albums; being able to trim the undesirable elements away from the pure, strong material makes it all a much more fulfilling experience, and the albums seem to flow better that way anyhow.

@ Aeon: Definitely agree on the strength of Branikald's ambient stylistic, it really brings an incredible counterpoint to the metal face of the work and creates a huge defining and enriching quality to the band. Certainly one of the things that initially got me really interested in exploring more of Kaldrad's work.

I have five Branikald albums actually, but Forest I need to get after those tracks you posted. As Aeonblade stated, the near constant, coldly pulsing melodic undercurrents are exactly the kind of emotive force within black metal that I actively seek out in such acts. The hypnotic dedication to this singular force is completely overwhelming, and damn powerful in the right hands, which keeps luring one in ever deeper...

Oh shit. Never mind then

It's interesting, though, that I so often hear people talk about Forest and Branikald in connection with "cold" aesthetics when to me they've always seemed to comprise some of the warmest sounds in black metal. Not to say that there aren't some frosty, forbidding atmospheres shot through their albums, but far more often I get this sense of dark sunsets over rolling valleys, the immense press of the sun hidden behind mountainous thunderheads overarching all they do. The power of the sun that raises the grain from the frozen ground... It's an awesome, complex blend of warm and cold that's just...beautiful, and very difficult to put into words.

They're one of the few bands I really think of cold mountains and bad ass Russian forests at night when I listen to them. They're not "ugly" or "hateful", or whatever words people usually use to describe shitty black metal, even though the recordings are messy and lo-fi. It's that constant sense of melody beneath all that stuff that gives off the cold vibe. I can see why you'd get a warm feeling from them though.

Kveldulv is probably their coldest album for me. It's got way more of a nocturnal, frozen vibe to it than a lot of the other Branikald discs. The first half of the album sound kinda like a darker, more primordial Nattens Madrigal. I guess it's really the sense of intense passion and furious anger that this music exudes that drives away some of the frost... there's too much unrelenting force of heartpulse at the music's core to ever let it feel frigid for me.

My mistake. I was talking purely about Forest in my post. I can definitely agree about a sense of warmness going on with Branikald. Haven't heard all the Branikald stuff. Don't download music and seems like a few of his albums are out of print.

The thing which gets me about the sea is that on land, "things" could come at you from two vectors (or a word like that); Horizontal and from above. In the sea there's also the underneath-element, which is where Eldrich tentacled death comes from.

Jesus, what are Within Temptation doing? Releasing every track from an upcoming cover album? Doesn't look interesting so far, if that's the case.

fifteetnh anniversary, so releasing 15 cover songs they are doing to celebrate or something along those lines. Shame they are all shitey pop songs released in the last two years, I like WT's usual material.
