Immolation.Ross has the best voice in all of metal IMO.

Don't you think thats pushing it a bit, GGN? Yeah, Ross is great and all, but "the best voice in all of metal"? Nah, not in a million years.

As semi-close as it is, I thought this one would be a lot closer. Damn.

As far as ideas for the next poll goes, I think a Leviathan v. Xasthur one would be pretty cool.

Pentagram v. St. Vitus?
Celtic Frost v. Bathory?
Blasphemy v. Beherit?
Napalm Death v. Repulsion?
There's so many possibilities!

No more of these, please. Even though I voted, it's really Apples:Oranges, and most polls of the like will be.

I was only trying to participate :-P

You know what would be truly great though? A Cryptopsy vs Psycrotic poll, seeing how both bands have very similar careers. Just saying.

Immolation was my vote but it took some deliberation. My preference for their style and intricacy of riffs, songs won out for me, but Incantation does so much with so little, it seems, and provide a memorable atmosphere and some crushing, bludgeoning riffs. Cool poll. Fun to think about. The recent EP Providence I really enjoyed, so there is the element of an outstanding and very recent release also in Immolation's favor.

I am happy to say that I predicted the outcome of this poll correctly.

My suggestion for a next poll would be
Cobalt vs. The Ruins Of Beverast
Two black metal bands that startet in 2003, have released 3 albums each and are, I think, similarly high regarded here.

Alternatively:
Mercyful Fate vs. Fates Warning

Suffocation vs. Cannibal Corpse
Manowar vs. Manilla Road
Kreator vs. Sodom
Evoken vs. Skepticism
Blind Guardian vs. Helloween

lots to think of.

Funny, I always considered Ross Dolan's vocals to be the band's weakest link.

He lacks range of expression and dynamics, I don't think it's hard to imagine why someone doesn't particularly like him. I find his voice too charming to care about the fact that his singing is very monotonous.

Ilwhyan touched on some of the points that apply to me, but more generally speaking, Ross Dolan's voice just robs me the wrong way. It doesn't mean I listen to Immolation any less because of him, I love the band and I can live with his vocals. But I do consider him the weakest member of Immolation and one of the weakest vocalists in the entire NYDM circle.

I can see what you guys mean, even though I disagree.

In other news regarding the other I-band; here's the new Incantation cover:

Love it, even though I would prefer a return to the classical style.

I think the same about the guy. He isn't the greatest DM vocalist ever, and he is very monotone, yes, but what he lacks in versatility he more than makes up for with sheer power. The guy sounds fucking menacing, and even more so in Immolation's modern work.

Both of them are excellent bands, but i like Immolation a bit more than Incantation.
But Incantation has a unqiue dark atomsphere in its songs.

I'm pretty sure Leviathan would win by far. And if we did Maiden vs. Priest, I'm pretty sure Maiden would win. The poll is only interesting when it's hard to tell who would win, like in this case (or something like Exhumed vs. Impaled).

I cannot be satisfied with any result for this poll other than 50/50.
But tell me, people that didn't vote Incantation, has Immolation ever written a "Unto Infinite Twilight / Majesty of Infernal Damnation"?! I think not.

Incantation.

Phenomenal riffs, excellent vocals, utterly savage brutal crushing atmosphere. Posega said it wonderfully. They destroy it.

Immolation is fucking awesome too....but Incantation is just on another level.

My apologies for starting all this.

Listened to Blasphemy today and Decimate Christendom a couple days ago, and goddamn I forgot how great newer Incantation shit is. "Merciless Tyranny" is a ripper and a half.

I've never seen Burzum vs. Mayhem either. Don't think anyone's ever asked whether "De Mysteriis..." is better than "Filosofem".

Both comparisons were made 'often' on internet forums back in the early 00s, though with Incantation being much less praised and their first three not having reached the 'cult' status they have during the past years, it was pretty much one-sided. Especially with Immolation just having come out with their easiest and most popular album, Close to a World Below and most people dismissing Incantation as just another blasting death metal band. Mayhem versus Burzum was much more popular and much more even. And naturally much more heated.

Newer Incantation is really cool. I listened to Blasphemy a few days ago myself and that is a hell of an album. Love it.

Later Incantation is certainly above recent Immolation, but again I stress that Incantation has been rather quiet ever since around when Immolation released Harnessing Ruin. While the aforementioned probably disappointed a bunch of fans by being quite streamlined and even simplistic in parts (as opposed to the chaos on earlier albums), I think only Shadows In the Light and Majesty And Decay have been below my standards for Immolation.

The last two are still perfectly enjoyable albums that I'd give ratings of 75-80%, but obviously the last couple of Incantation albums are better.

I would say Shadows in the Light is the only Immolation album I don't like, and would consider weak. The production is really bad, and muffles some elements, and the riffs are not up to par, with a few exceptions.

Good to see Blasphemy getting some love these days, back when I was discovering the band no one would give that album the time of day.

I can finally see the results now that the poll has ended. Quite a margin to Immolation, really. Kind of surprised.

Not that it matters. Both bands kind of rule. :)

Incantation's first album is better than anything Immolation ever did, but aside from that?

Immolation FTW.

Exactly! That goes for both posts. The dude has a perfect death metal voice, in my mind. It has a very unique, dark tone that never wavers and he enunciates the lyrics really well! Don't get me wrong, I don't give a shit about being able to understand a guy, generally speaking, but it is a nice plus if you know every nook and cranny of a song, riffs and vocals alike. Ross excels at being dark, powerful, and yet, quite understandable.

Hell and damnation...can't vote anymore. Oh well, the band i would've chosen has won by a rather
large margin so... Back in the early nineties both yankee bands were considered B class material;definitely
no A list bands, both of them. Immolation were probably better known and liked in europe back then as well
as nowadays (though Incantation seems to be more appreciated today than 20+ years ago). I dumped my Incantation
albums at least 10 years ago already. I never could get into that band. So my vote is for Immolation.
Ross Dolan has a really original voice/grunt that is instantly recognizable, definitely a plus amongst the thousands of growlers.
Musicwise Immolation were more to my liking. But only the first 3 fullengths,i didn't care much for the fourth..and didn't
follow them on their later escapades. Saw them live a couple of years ago and the new songs weren't bad either.

In the end both bands went under in Europe because the flood from Florida was a hell of a lot better. Nocturnus, old Morbid Angel
early Obituary,early Deicide etc.

I'm now listening to Onward to Golgotha on youtube and i must admit i like it now more than back then. Maybe i will have to
buy their albums again, after all. The production is not as murky and bad as i had in mind (an indecipherable mudmess.) I'm
also going to check out the later Immolation cd's as well then.
