BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Manuel Sevillano

BANE Serbs return to the fray with "The Acausal Fire", ie, his second studio album after the successful and brutal "Chaos, Darkness and Emptiness" already we review on this site before. For this new CD the band continues its Black / Death Metal clean and devastating whose main objective is to break all possible necks.

BANE know offer aggression, speed, acoustic guitars and even orchestral touches in the correct dose, so that the result is an entertaining and above work, brutal. Although his compositions are not the most original possible, these guys do not make us think Serbia get all this and what we have heard before, indeed, manage to increase our anger based interior a crisp, sharp riffs, some interesting solos, a sweeping vocal work and a great sound.

Black / Death Metal with modern dyes and with all the bad blood and for having given. This "The Acausal Fire" is all this and more within its ten tracks full of pure hatred misanthrope.

Rating: 8.5 / 10

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.avenoctum.com

Image

By Martin Harris

Mixing blues, rock and death metal really shouldn’t work at all, but on the whole it does on this debut from Finnish zombie rockers Rocking Corpses. Comprised of the duo Tony D.K. on vocals/guitar and Leper Laze on vocals/bass. Drums are performed by Vile, who I’m assuming is the same person that did the cover art according to the CD booklet. Loosely based on the concept of a zombie’s post-apocalyptic perspective of human behaviour; the idea works and is actually quite fun, when you read the humourous lyrics covering every eventuality of seemingly normal human behaviour.

Beginning this album is a Finnish funeral hymn apparently and quickly followed by “Up From The Grave” as the gut wrenching vocals are ultra low, like Will from Mortician (remember them). The rock ‘n’ roll feel is dominant with clean vocals being used mainly for the choral parts, which really are catchy as hell and tonally very good. The inclusion of various samples was expected but not so much they detract from the flow of the album. I actually felt there was a hefty Southern states metal ingredient on “Necropolis” during the guitar intro as again the clean vocal elements pervade the chorus and have a slight Chuck Billy twang in their delivery. There are street noises emphasizing the lyrical content as well for added theatre.

For some reason and before I knew it I had written Volbeat during “For Better For Worse” due to the groove laden guitar hooks and beat, and even some boozy Superchrist as well. A promo video exists for “Take For Whiskey”, made up of George A. Romero clips from various zombie films as this number offers a bit of rotting glam on the riffing and has a distinct 80s blood smear about it. “925” is exactly what the title suggests, nine to five routine as viewed by a zombie and is the first tune to begin with clean vocals rather than the bellowing belches. The groove and sleaze has Ramones on it as well as garage dirt rock like Quireboys, believe it or not. The band has a namesake tune that is very heavy and very funny lyrically, covering the ridiculous idea of a band on stage eating each other, damn bizarre. “In The Dead Of Night” definitely has signs of Fireball Ministry, again with silly but funny lyrics and possessing a good solo. Sleazy, gloopy, gnarly and outrageously infectious greets you with “Necrophiliacs”. The tune begins like bar room rock with acoustic guitar then followed by a cracking groove riff and beat and lyrically deals with falling in love with a dead girl; the guy sounds like Glenn Danzig singing along on a bar stool, nodding his head in appreciation. I love this song.

As an album, Rocking Corpses perverse view of the world manifests as contagious heavy rock festering with death metal whilst drowning in bourbon. Check it out and give it plenty of air time to root within your psyche before passing judgement. You will be amply rewarded I assure you.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

I stop to look at the cover of this album. It will be old style death metal or brutal death metal? Rocking Corpses? Never heard of them! The title of the album is "Rock 'n Roll"? Then something is wrong. I put the album into the player and pressed the play. There is a chant, a hymn funeral Finnish and the roar of the rain. Bah, titled "Into the Grave". Following "Up from the Grave." Damn, died and resurrected? Aah, now I understand perhaps the band's name, album, and I discover later, the images inside the booklet. Here you have to deal with issues zombies. There is a growling voice, dark and evil, but there is also sung in a clean, which is nice. E 'followed by a southern-doom metal sound, with a nice solo included. Okay, so these are Rocking Corpses death 'n roll and anything southern, rock and doom. Moreover, the rock is in the title and there is also the next song. Carina "For Better for Worse" is frantic, almost punkeggiante. There is always a double voice, growl and clean together. The solos are always well made and executed to capture the attention. Are melodic. There is still doom 'n roll and then "Life for a Life," which seems the Mercyful Fate seen in a less serious. Pretty. "925" is the Galaxy! A hymn hard rock zombies! In fact, talking about them and with the usual irony. Probably the transmit repeatedly on radio, sooner or later. "Rocking Corpses" is a wild beast that runs through the desert, but "In the Dead of Night" is even more southern, less punk than the last, and is a stoner in disguise, but the best is given in "Necrophiliacs." A grim song because explicit, sensual (obviously) but cheeky and cheerful because of clean vocals on speed. "Dead End", reminds me of Metallica's "Garage Days". There's something rotten here. There is the stench of death, but also alcohol and unleash all this were Tony DK (Growl voice and guitars), Leper Laze (clean vocals and bass) and Vile (drummer and graphic artist). "Rock 'n Roll" turns to a thousand, the listening time flies frantic and pump energy because at the root of it all is the rock, or perhaps rock' n rott, as these Finnish define it.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.xtreemmusic.org

Image

By Xavier Bergada

So glad, a scant year since he jumped into the ring with his acclaimed debut album, THE GARDNERZ Swedes seem not waste time. This time we get to "It All Fades" EP of five tracks DARKTHRONE own version included more we serve as a bridge for their next studio album.

Without losing the essence of his previous feature "The System Of Nature" the compositions of these Swedes they might break the mold. His proposal somewhere between Doom and Death more cavernous still dominates the highest tonnage of your balance, that if less overweight than before and with more variety added to the base style.

From the initial "Do not Look Back" these guys go to the strip, his is dizzy both genders as if to break the issues into two is involved and know it a long time. The hearth is cited linked with many new concerns, with nods to Death of a more technical / progressive pace out there overlook something melodic clean some records and rarely visited before, as in the cuator minutes covering "Melatonin" predominance dotted interludes (the end with "A Horrible Disease" this logradísma) any registration shy of the opposite sex and even epic choruses amid "Eracing Bad Specimen".

The curious note comes with the version that is indecipherable Darkthrone Cascan man and VULCANO WINTER those of his previous work, at least respect the essence and sweeping it ran to home, but this, you do not know where to get it. The theme is none other than the "Transilvanian Hunger" but I assure you that not even recognize such daring Fenriz. One version (to call it somehow) that goes with half clean guitar / acoustic whose theme is only a female voice dye mortuary, not a very rare thing and innovative accordance with eyes that look, although you I say there is no connection anywhere.

It is clear that THE GARDNERZ not satisfied with business as usual and try to distance themselves from the common logic of gender patterns. No me some credit if passed by former Tristitia Wilhelm Lindh, although I will not deny that his colorful rhythmic different extra cedes more and more recognizable musical takeoff. The most commendable thing is that pulling something invented and are carving out a unique musical personality and even quite easy to associate THE GARDNERZ, because apparently not resemble anyone and that in this day and age is a real advantage.

So, if you strip the Doom / Death with his particular line perfectly divided and with a few extras that make the difference, THE GARDNERZ you served in tray.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.thisisnotascene.com

Image

By Myron Schmidt

The Gardnerz, a Swedish doom metal outfit presents their sophomore offering “It All Fades”. Once you get over the name which takes about 30 seconds into their opening track, these boys have captured a unique sound. Loyal to their doom label, yet not afraid to incorporate unique almost jazz style interludes at various points along the way. This lands somewhere between an EP and LP in terms of length and it a great journey down the doom metal lane. The cover art is some of the best I have seen this year and captures the dark atmosphere of the music admirably.

Lets deal quickly with the one low point on the album which is the Darkthrone cover ‘Transilvanian Hunger’. Covering a legend like Darkthrone is a tough nut to crack anyway but this cover just didn’t resonate with me. I personally didn’t care for the slowed down melodic approach taken. It didn’t match my expectations and no amount of spins of that song seemed to have altered my thinking, its a swing and a miss.

Now, as for the other five tracks on the release, they are all solid creative doom metal. ‘A Horrible Disease’ is a great example of the some of the creativity put forth by the Swedes. It combines some true guttural vocals over towering riffs and beats. Added in for good measure, is a great jazz influenced type interlude, that really meshes up nicely with the overall feel to track. The title track as well has some real marching riffs and beats right up front. Added into the desperate growls, were some brutally incorporated jazz flair its really adds up to a deep and dark song. Don’t misunderstand me, you will not hear any Wes Montgomery or Pat Metheny jazz but its rather the influence and groove feeling you are left with. It’s that hint that makes it work so well in the tracks.

All in all, these is a creative offering in the doom metal vein. The large heavy riffs and beats are all here with some very nice added interludes. The vocals are desperate dark and pure visceral in nature just as you want for a darker release such as this. It took a couple of spins for this to really sink in but from the point where it dropped it roots and hit the chord its been playing throughout my day. This will not be removed from my player for quite a long time. Give this one a chance, just fast forward over the Darkthrone cover, and enjoy the darkness created by The Gardnerz.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by heavymetaltribune

Image

By Hongrui

Unlike most of their counterparts, Sweden’s Fetus Stench does not play the style of death metal that their countrymen such as Entombed and Nihilist, along with countless other bands have played in. Honestly (and I can’t stress this enough), hearing one after another band emulating the style that Entombed has created has caused me to be sick and tired of that style, and encountering bands from Sweden is often a rather boring experience. It is rather fortunate then, that Fetus Stench decides to be one of the few bands to buck the trend, with Stillbirth being their debut full length release.

Rather than having the standard Swedish influences, Stillbirth presents a rather strong USDM influence, and the themes of gore on top of the crushing riffs that are unleashed right from the beginning of the album almost reminds listeners of the brutality that bands like Suffocation have released in recent years. And one finds it almost difficult to identify the country of origin of the band (in a good way, of course!). The blistering riffs and speed, and the energy of the band right from the beginning are all rather uncharacteristic of a band out of Sweden.

The technical aspects in the music cannot be overlooked as well, as the riffs that the guitarists execute range from full-on crushing intent to those that can get rather complex. The fretwork of Christoffer is also rather impressive, particularly on the solo on The Outer Island, though such moments do not seem to be the emphasis of the band. The pinch-harmonics-infused riffing on Severe Suffering further brings out that slight brutal death metal influence in the band’s playing, even giving this mid-paced track a slight groove. Drummer Emil in particular stands out in the music, with the energetic, yet precise style of drumming, punishing his kit without any mercy. Bjorte’s gruff vocals only add to the aggression and impact of the overall music. The tightness in the band’s playing also comes through rather clearly to the listener, especially so with the crisp production quality that is on the album, enhancing the overall musical experience of Stillbirth with each of the instruments being rather clear, preventing any of the excellent musicians from being buried in the mix.

The themes of gore and violence only seem to up the intensity of the music, sticking close to their band and album title, and ensures that fans of such gore-themed music will remain entertained throughout, complete with top-quality death metal that is present on Stillbirth. The technical brilliance, the relentless execution of the music and the high intensity have all made Stillbirth an extremely enjoyable listen, and Fetus Stench is certainly a band that I will be looking out for in the future.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

The Radition Sickness begin his career in the late '80s, Indiana, but they run mostly on an underground, creating two demos and as many EPs and splits. Out only now their first full length, after a dissolution consumatosi at least twenty years ago. Weather for the Radiations stopped, "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" is basically a death metal raw and cheap, no frills and lacquer production. An album that is the son of a ruthless death metal and dated, still partially contaminated by the most extreme and brutal thrash metal. Drumming with a snare equal to a metal tin case triggered by a double suck! The riffing is full-bodied, fast as lightning, or is often dark as thunder. This American band, the name recalling a famous piece of their countrymen Repulsion, played with force but also through purity, obviously dated, and a technique very attractive. Remember the Cryptic Slaughter, Master, but also the first show progressions Obituary and when thrash / hardcore shooting very well known patterns and even older, but still highly effective. At a distance of a few songs from the beginning (since the third "Tripping in the Seas of Madness") is part of their style, made of dark death metal but linear and staggered parts almost crossover. Moreover, the album includes a remastering of the EP "The Other Me" in 1990, which showcases a band very much in debt to hardcore, so as to touch the tips Suicidal Tendencies., In fact enough to listen to the first 15 "of" Escape to Insanity ". The verge of plagiarism! However, the EP is really useful to see how the band has been able to grow and express themselves then, years after the breakup, through a pure death metal and bad. Probably "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" is a release more for the nostalgic, but its artistic value is undeniable.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by nihilistzine

Image

By nihilistzine

The Thrash Metal has had a "New Revival" very interesting that you can not ignore, and which is given by new bands with younger members and members who have that thought and feeling "underground" today no longer a way forward for many bands as it was before. Entrench presents his debut album "Inevitable Decay" with a pure Thrash Metal! which reflected the essence of European Metal Thrash Metal Thrash especially the Teutonic (German) and to further specify, have very strong influence of Sodom, Destruction and Kreator, very aggressive!, riffs short but very deep!, guitars that sound dirty, very fast drums and where the voice of Fredrik Pellbrink possesses a blend of voices Jef Becerra (Possessed) and Petroza Mille (Kreator) is simply amazing!!, along the 8 topics included in this disc can only move his head and almost impossible to stop it!, desgarrarte ears and enjoy the violence of these guys!. In his live performances, these guys Swedes leave you with your mouth open for his great speed and passion with which they play. With this debut have returned to entrench Essential Thrash Metal which has been seen lately that is being dominated by European bands, this album can be seen as "retro-thrash" for its old-fashioned production by this "tribute" that makes the beginnings of the genre, where the cover of the album is very simple compared to the big "artworks" that are made today. In order to entrench "Inevitable Decay" genre that gives the old spirit with thrash metal which emerged 25 years ago, is not simply an expansion of the genre is ready to kick your ass! in the butt!, for lovers of Sodom, Kreator and Destruction this album is to have it!, enjoy a beer and destroy your room!. Thanks to Bradley Smith (Nocturnal Cult Webzine in English) for putting me in touch with the band member Fredrik entrench the copy of the album.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by rayvanhornjr blogspot

Image

By Ray Van Horn, Jr.

Fourteen minutes, crushed and maimed for your manic pleasure. Italian death experimentalists Humangled have essentially been in and out of the scene since 1996 with primary components Andrew Goreds and Luke Scurb representing the original incarnation of the band. Returning in 2006 and bulking up to a five-piece to conjure their 2010 full-length debut, Fractal, the new Humangled has quickly won praise in the death underground. This year, Humangled serves up an oscillating four song EP, Odd Ethics, and the praise continues to be heaped upon this band.

It's pretty easy to see why with Humangled's beastly riffs and gutsy swerves into doom, black metal, rawk, cowpunk and Pantera-esque proto power measures. To call Humangled a death metal band is accurate, yet it's not. Andrew Goreds huffs his esophagus dry while Luke Scurb and Vhell Miscarriage shred the bejeesus out of their lines. Bassist Frank Hichols and drummer Fred Valdaster are total madmen of their positions. All of it combined to spew death metal mayhem as you like it, but there's a twisted unpredictability to Odd Ethics that keeps you hitting the repeat button.

"Needles of the Blind" may have you thinking it's going to settle into mere blasting modes, but then you're redirected into a doom-heavy breakdown followed by an uptempo bit of shitkicking on the choruses. This spills into the following track, "Skinned, To Feel All," a nasty bit of business with a Southern boogie kick operating as the primary groove. "Skinned, To Feel All" then shifts tones with crunky choruses and horror dirges, feeling like Pantera-meets-Botch-meets-Death.

"Smells Acrid" steps on the gas with some gnarly double-hammer plus a gory mix of Cannibal Corpse and the barest whiffs of Celtic Frost and dare we say, even Voivod. Signature swaps galore here, but nothing compared to the final track, "Deny Your Creed." The proggy intro is hardly indicative of where the song is actually headed. Even the first bar of the song gives no real hint, either. This one is a complex metal stew filled with more variables than its base meat and potatoes. There are many extra spices to Humangled's molten gravy on "Deny Your Creed," which they stir up and let their listeners try to discern each component as they can.

There are random bits of choppiness to Odd Ethics yet the songs are still written well. They challenge, engage and defy categorical segregation. If this group tightens up just another hair on the next go-round, then get the hell out of their way...

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by extrememetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Daemonicus are a band from Sweden that plays a very old school style of Swedish style death metal and this is a review of their 2012 album "Deadwork" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with not much in the way of blast beats, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast Sweden style death metal guitar riffs that brings back the sound of their early 90's with some groove elements and melodic riffing as well as a brief use of soft and clean playing, while the lead guitars when they are utilized are very old school and melodic sounding death metal guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are mostly deep death metal growls with some high pitched screams being thrown into the music at times as will as a brief use of horror film samples, while the lyrics cover dark and gore themes, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful, heavy and professional sound to it.

In my opinion Daemonicus are a very great sounding old school Swedish style death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Dead Work Of Art" "Embracing Her Remains" "The Hymn Of Ubo Sathla" and "Nothing But Death". RECOMMENDED BUY.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by autothrall blogspot

Image

By autothrall

My previous experience with Daemonicus, their 2009 debut Host of Rotting Flesh, was of a pretty hungry, competent and pummeling young Swedish death metal outfit with a primal energy and production that just didn't manifest into very memorable songs. With Deadwork, they seek to refresh and modernize their songwriting to better results, and I can claim with zero hesitation that that is exactly what they've done here. It's not the most consistent record, and there are a few truly dull grooves or hooks we've all heard a thousand times before, but at the end of the day, there are a few tremendous songs among this bunch which any fan of the style should appreciate; the early signs of a band beginning to flourish.

Daemonicus is not one to eschew melody or variation in a stumbling attempt to recreate Left Hand Path, Slaughter of the Soul or any other Swedish monument, but there's no doubt they've got a lot of influence from Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, Bolt Thrower, Amon Amarth and other Euro gods. The rhythm guitar tone is heavily redolent of that old 90s sound still so popular; muscular enough that it strongmans the simpler grooves, but also pretty polished to pack a punch. The melodies, where they appear, are usually quite good, and rescue what might otherwise be a pretty mediocre matrix of chord progressions; the use such leads and atmospheres often recalls the death & roll oriented acts like Hearse or Desultory, and altogether these elements fashion tracks like "The Grandeur of Total Termination" and "We Feast On Your Flesh" into effective ragers that won't soon escape your thoughts. The drums are bright and splashy, the bass uses a grimy distorted sewer tone to good effect, and as a whole, the production of the album is huge and 'now', not so clean as, say, Twilight of the Thunder God, but nonetheless tight and professional.

The vocals aren't too guttural in nature, more of a visceral, rich snarl imbued with plenty of charisma, and they hold up when he sustains syllables out over the ballast of a chorus groove. Where Deadwork truly worked for me is where those slower, Bolt Thrower-meets-Grave, breakdowns, melodic guitars and vocals all congealed into this epic bruise on the chin; where it became something of multiple, emotional dimensions and not merely a simpler, thuggish exercise in familiar note placement. It's not as dark of an album as you'll hear from other upstarts like Miasmal or Tormented, but at the same time it's mildly more accessible towards the melodic death fans, without sacrificing its churning core aesthetics. There are probably only 3-4 songs here that I'd return to with any regularity, but it's easily a rank or two above its predecessor Host of Rotting Flesh, and I'd recommend it for fans of anything from other newcomers Puteraeon and Entrails to Feral or the latest Desultory record.

Verdict: Win [7.25/10]

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by extrememetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Erupted are a band from Sweden that plays a very old school form of death metal and this is a review of their 2012 album "Into The Grips Of Chaos" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of brutal sounding blast beats being thrown into the music at times, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast old school Swedish style death metal that are very heavy and brutal sounding along with a brief use of clean playing being utilized on one song, while the lead guitars are very old school sounding death metal guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are mostly deep death metal growls with some high pitched screams and spoken word samples being thrown into the music at times, while the lyrics cover occult, anti christian, dark, violent and hateful themes, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful and heavy sound in the early 90's death metal tradition.

In my opinion Erupted are a very great sounding old school style Swedish death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Salvation From Below" "The Dark Mistress" "Blazing From Heaven" and "Hell Recreated". RECOMMENDED BUY.

ERUPTED (Sweden) Interview by extrememetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

We are 5 dudes who play death fucking metal and we are here to fuck shit up! This band started in 2010 as a follow-up to an earlier project (Beyond Hell) and released a promo in 2011. Right now we are waiting for our debut album to be released on Abyss Records.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

Raw. Death. Metal. Like a fist to your face.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Religion viewed from an existential, chaos- gnostical point of view, described as violently and brutal as possible.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

The threat of being sued over our old name and stigmatism, our music aims to be an eruption.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Lund with Fester was by far the most fun we've had, awesome crowd and fun people. On stage it tends to get pretty violent.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?

yes, updates on this will follow shortly.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?

pretty damn good

8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?

Cedrik plays in ''Chained to Perdition'' and Jonas in ''Tyrannosatan''.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

forward.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Dream Theater, Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Opeth, Entombed, Grave, old Cryptopsy, Behemoth, Suffocation and Overdeath.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Our personal interests vary, but collectively we like whiskey, cigars, women and planning world domination.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

If you want to support our quest for world domination, or just want to check us and our music out, please visithttp://www.facebook.com/Eruptedofficial.

ANGIST (Iceland) "Circle of Suffering" CD EP review by castrum

Image

By Georgius

My great friends, two female guitarists from Reykjavik, Iceland - Gyða (guitar) and Edda (guitar & vokills) - were so kind and sent me this year their latest release, which they recorded in the fall of 2011. I wrote a review about their 2-track promo back then and it's a pleasure to me again to share my thoughts about their "Circle of Suffering" EP. I would notice at once the line-up changes, namely Haraldur Ingi (bass) and Hafþór (drums) joined the band. This awesome Icelandic Death Metal horde totally conquered me again with their killer songs. The EP includes 5 excellent Death Metal masterpieces with passages and influences out of the Thrash and Black Metal genres. Three songs were composed by Edda, while "Godless" and "Silence" by Gyða & Edda. I would like to note that Edda's voice is deeper than it was on the promo. The variety in their tracks is just remarkable as you can find there brutality, fast yet murderer tempos as well as doom-oriented ones changing step by step, so the listener, I think, can enjoy all the moments of this EP. The lyrics were written by Edda and as I see ANGIST is about to create their individual thoughts about darkness and human scum. Some trivia: ANGIST's logo was created by the well-known artist, Christophe Szpajdel and the amazing artwork by Christian Sloan Hall. Summa summarum: Icelandic ANGIST is obligatory to all the true Death Metal warriors worldwide! They are marching and winning wholeheartedly on the battlefield of real underground!

INTERVIEW WITH THE OWNER OF ABYSS RECORDS DAN FERGUSON

Dan and his brutal label has been supporting the underground scene for a while, here's an interesting interview with him for Aquelarre Zine.

Image

1-How did you go about finding the bands for your label?

Well that kind of feel into place where I seen there was a need for that support with some quality local bands at the time Hordes Of Nebulah, Christ Beheaded, Bulletwolf, Maax and then came along Die Hard, F.U.C.T. and Torture Division then I had the foundation in place for a quality label to be born.

2-When did you start Abyss records and why?

Just need to change direction and get more directly involved and less of just a middle man distributor and trying to survive doing that, especially since I closed down my old store front.

3-What kind of contracts do you have with the bands on the label?

Pretty easy to understand and straight forward as well, plus I try to allow the bands to keep the band name rights and freedom while having the solid support of an Indie label. Mainly give bands % of stuff for royalties and bust my ass to get their names across the globe.

4-The label's been going for a while. How hard has it been to keep it going?

Sometimes it can be real hard and others it’s more fun. People ripping bands, labels, stores and the music industry in general OFF by illegal downloads is killing the business the most these days.
So people need to return to buying your favorite artist and if it’s NOT worth buying maybe you’re not really into it. Just because it’s FREE doesn’t mean horde as much illegal music, movies and books even. Never thought the world would ever become so disposable these days. Now labels as like Century Media and I are starting to fight back and cracking down and getting the releases taken down off these sites, suing some the illegal sites as well some operators being arrested too.

5-What have you learn running the label?

Well I knew it would be hard work and also a challenge to get people to take notice to the label and gain the respect of the listeners. However, I think with the select of releases I offer people into most all Extreme Metal genres can find something from my label if not most or some people seem to like them all for the most part.
The worst part like I said is the impact illegal downloading is and has already done to the music industry as well, movies and books. I personal as a fan of metal I love to collect and cherish the stuff I have collected over the years.

6-Most of the bands on the label are Death metal. Is that a personal decision?

Well I guess that reflects my personal favorite genre over all is Death Metal, especially Old School Swedish Death Metal. I really like Black / Death or Black / Death / Thrash mixture of influences too. I do however like Black Metal a lot, some great Thrash, Doom, Grindcore, Heavy Metal (without Iron Maiden & W.A.S.P. where would this world be today….hahaha).

7-What else is coming up on the label? Maybe you could sign a Peruvian or South American band?

Well September 28th will be the releases THE GARDNERZ (Sweden) It All Fades CD EP & BANE (Serbia) The Acausal Fire DIGI CD and following those two great releases. October 12th release date ERUPTED (Sweden) In The Grip Of Chaos CD * DAEMONICUS (Sweden) Deadwork CD which again I think are two more amazing releases; solid 4 releases going to into Fall 2012.
Futures sneak peak have new THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S./Sweden) CD EP, THE GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.), The Awakening CD (Re-Issue), BEER PRESSURE (Germany) Metal Cult Supremacy CD, ANGREPP (Sweden) Party In Hell DIGI CD, SEPTEKH (Sweden) Apollonian Eyes CD EP, MESOPOTAMIA (Norway) CD and more well into 2013 !!!

8-Did you apply your experiences as a Metalhead to the way you run your label?

I just run my label as I would seek for bands I would want to buy if they were not on my label, guess you can look at it that way. I did apply my experiences you could say, but more my passion & love for the music I’m into is why I do what I do today (label & distributor for underground labels). Not because I make a lot of money…LOL (if that was the case I would quit back in late 90’s).

9-How did you get your label off the ground? I mean, what was the single best decision you made when setting up your business?

Well the label didn’t really come till August 2008, but I been doing business since as fair back as 1990 but started mail-order and “A View Into The Abyss” Fanzine back in 1993 I think it was.
It all started selling BLACK FUNERAL Demo/7”/T-shirts, DARKNESS ENSHROUND Demo, EMPEROR (Norway) Demos, MORTIIS (Norway) Demos, early BURZUM stuff and just having some the great contacts myself & Michael Ford / BLACK FUNERAL (helped me back In the beginning before moving on with bands and to Texas) had back in the early days of the scene.

10-What is the single worst choice you made when getting the label going? What one thing would you tell other to never do?

Stay away from getting to deep with money investments, bands need to back up their work to help make things happen just as much as the label. So some bands work a lot harder than others and it shows in time.
The most important; not get involved in multi label releases again like I done with FAUST (Italy) From Glory To Infinity DIGI CD (3 labels done it and even though different versions and Bonus Tracks or different packaging I think it hurt us all if one of us just stuck with doing it alone. This might have worked better back in the beginning of the metal underground but not so well today.

11-Keeping an eye on the budget is always important. When you are promoting a new release, how do you prioritize your promotional budget? If you could only spend money on one thing, a radio promotion, print media advertising, what would you choose? Why?

Well…. Honestly I’m starting to think it sort of a waste of money to advertise in magazines and hate to say it, but it’s more like billboard for people to see what to look for online to download for FREE and not actually BUY the CD releases. So to spend $250 and up on ads and sell 10-30 copies doesn’t pay off in long run. Something I’m going to have to rethink in future. Plus unless you spend big bucks in most magazines, you don’t get reviews, especially interviews. Just like most media though you have to BUY your way in the door (I don’t support that shit).
It’s funny when you see all the main magazines have the same band on front cover, why you think that happens??? NOT because that album is really the best thing out lately, but because someone dropped some $$$ into bucket of kiss ass. Kind of like politics!!!!

12-How important do you think it is for bands to promote themselves on the internet, downloading albums and stuff. Do you think things like MySpace; Facebook can take the place of more traditional promotion routes?

I think it’s very important that not only the label but bands and their fans work together to spread the support. I know it’s hard for bands to even TOUR anymore too, less people buy shirts and stuff at shows which in return bands loss their asses on TOUR. I think between what I do, Clawhammer PR has done for the label and getting the bands names out there and reviewed & covered and fans re-posting on forums, blogs, ect….. That has gained much attention to date !!!
Facebook seems like a great place and I do post on there, but seems to me like a status thing or game for most. People if you going to hit the “LIKE” button, at least listen, check out the video, read the blog, message, ect…… Again people hit like, do they ever BUY the album???? See the pattern of how people live today verses 10-15 years ago and support the scene and bought cassettes, CD, vinyl’s or all the above.

13-What are your favorite releases on Abyss Records? Which releases are you most proud and what other projects are you working on at the moment?

I like them all honestly they have special meaning to me being a part of it, so I hate to pick certain bands over others. I can say I think I just got much stronger with each year and the roster has just grown more solid for sure.
I think I created a label I would be happy to say I fucking love that label and everything they do. Kind of looking back in from a listeners view and not doing a release to make $$$ or because particular reason other than love what I hear coming out of my fucking speakers.

14-What is your opinion about Aquelarre Zine and all the printed zines around the world?

Honestly, I say it’s one the BEST of the Old School style ones, because I use to do mine old cut and paste method and it takes a lot of work and dedication. Keep it up, plus you have that same DIE HARD passion for the music I do and that is what matters most, you support !!!

15-Thanks a lot for taking your time in answering this interview Dan, keep supporting the real underground man. Any last words?

Thanks for the interview and great support you have given Abyss Records since you discovered the label and releases. Hope you continue to enjoy what Abyss brings to the table for the entire world to hear. Good luck and keep up your great Fanzine.
Hope we all have a better and healthier 2013 !!!! Thanks to ALL those ABYSS RECORDS supporters across the world !!!!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Pim B.

Last year I reviewed the album ‘The System Of Nature’ by Sweden’s The Gardnerz. A few months after that self-financed released the album was reissued by Abyss Records. This edition also contained two extra covers. The band now returns with a six-song MCD that also has a cover on it. Musically this is doomy death metal by a band that sounds fairly original. You can’t compare The Gardnerz to any other band that easily and that’s quite an accomplishment. Especially the guitar parts are tasteful and the production is very good too. Highlight however is the cover of DarkThrone’s ‘Transilvanian Hunger’. The Gardnerz totally pulled this song apart. It basically turned in to a version with finger picked guitars and vocals by guest singer Paulina Stihavka, who you can also hear on the song ‘It All Fades’. Just this cover justifies listening to this release.

Interview with Daniel Ferguson owner of Abyss Records by metalcorefanzine

I have known Daniel Ferguson and his label Abyss Records for quite some time now and I thought and interview was long overdue with this man and his labels o here is the interview and here is his story:

Image

MC: Tell me readers who you are and a little about yourself.

DF: My name is Daniel Ferguson, owner & operator of Abyss Records since 1993 and been involved in the underground since 1990. Metal is my life & passion!!!!!

MC: Have you always lived in Indiana? What sort of boy were you growing up? Did you come from a small or big family?

DF: Yes, adventurous but stayed out of trouble or guess never got caught… hahaha I didn’t come from big family, divorced parents at young age and one son of my mother. Dad had two other kids with step mother. Most family is all into God and I could care less about that shit….. So I stay to myself anyway.

MC: Were you into music even at a young age? What were some of things you were into when you were a boy?

DF: I like playing little instruments and stuff in school I guess, just hated the dumb songs they have you sing, ect…. I pretty much found music on my own, then with little extra guide through trading to find out about newer bands. Then I got deep into writing people snail mails style.

MC; What were you like as a teenager and at what point did you discover rock n roll and metal? What did you think of the music when you 1st heard it?

DF: I kept to myself for the most part and never tried to follow and certain trend or group always chose my own path which lead me to start my own business pretty much….. I first heard early Iron Maiden and W.A.S.P. then I was hooked for live. The addiction had already taken over my soul!!!! LOL

MC: At the time were there any cool record stores you could go find music or a good local radio station that played at least decent music?

DF: Yeah, there used to be some cool local stores, now we are down to one Indie store in Indianapolis area that sells metal. Also use to have local high School Radio station that support local bands as well other metal acts like early Metallica, Slayer, ect…… WBDG 90.9

MC: At what point did you discover the wonderful world of the underground metal scene? Do you remember the 1st band or couple bands that you heard?

DF: As far back as I can remember hearing Dead Horse, Skeletal Earth, F.U.C.T., Slayer, Phlegm, Macabre, D.R.I., Drop Dead, Radiation Sickness, Anal Cunt, Mentors, Napalm Death, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Pungent Stench……

MC: Were you like me and after you heard a few bands it was like a drug that you wanted more of? What were some of the early bands that you heard and got into?

DF: Swedish Death Metal changes my live forever…… Entombed “Left Hand Path”!!!!

MC: At any point did you discover the world of fanzines, tape trading and demo tapes? If so what zines did you read back in the day and did you do much tape trading and stuff?

DF: It was like late ’87-’88 I think when I started tape trading or being feed some the early Thrash / Grindcore / Death metal bands.

MC: What were some early concerts that you saw and what was your favorite band back then and are they still one of your favorites now?

1990 - Obituary, Sepultura & Sadus in Chicago, IL, W.A.S.P. Live 1996, Iron Maiden for the 1st time & Pungent Stench Live 2006.

MC: Did you ever do any writing or did you ever do any record label work before you started Abyss Records?

DF: I use to do “A View Into The Abyss” fanzine…. Done 6 cult issues back in the day with some the first Burzum, Mayhem, In Flames, Macabre and other bands interviews!!!! (shit I completely forgot that great zine-chris).

MC: What got you the idea to start up a label? How long did it take you before you thought about it till it actually became reality? Looking back was starting up and getting the label established harder than you thought it was going to be?

DF: I just needed to do something outside the basic mail-order as at the time everyone was trying to start doing it, just like EBay…. Plus I stop using them after they wanted to start shit over selling Black Metal artist and was tired of them taking every dime they could just to sell a CD for $2-$3 profit.

MC: Take me through the steps of starting the label. Did you have an idea what you were doing and who did you ask for advice when you were starting it up? At the time was it just you doing the label?

DF: I just said fuck it one day and went for it, then picked up couple other great local artist Christ Behead (IN) and Bulletwolf (IN), Die Hard (Swe), F.U.C.T., then Torture Division came it really made me pleased to be working with them as I grew up listening to the members other bands.

MC: Was it hard at the start trying to find the right band to sign off as your 1st release? Do you draw up contracts and stuff with the bands you sign? Are they for one release at a time?

DF: No…. things just started falling into place it seemed in time….

MC: What was the 1st band that you signed and what was it about them that made you want to sign them?

DF: HORDES OF NEBULAH (IN), just friends I wanted to help get there stuff out to the world and think they well deserve it. Just wait for their new album, the CD I released is pretty raw but still good for older Demo material compilation pretty much.

MC: What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about starting up a label these days?

DF: Good luck and unless you really are into for the music and fans, then get out !!!!

MC: How many releases have you put out to date and how long has the label been around? Did you think when you started doing this that the label would still be around? Are there any bands you regret signing and was there any bands that you missed out on and had a chance to sign that you kinda regret now not working with them?

DF: I am up to number 29-30 now and more to come…. It has grown very well and the respect I’m getting in Europe is amazing. I didn’t think I would take things this far but again I’ve been working with amazing bands and want to offer people a classic style cult label like it used to be. I don’t sign stuff just because I can sell something, or is trendy….. No my taste

MC: When you listen to a new band or a band that sends you music hoping to get signed, what do you listen for? What advice would you have for a band that is trying to get signed? Do you feel there is way too many bands in the scene nowadays and that most all sound the same?

DF: Something that just hits me right and doesn’t get boring from listening to it, something you can listen from start to finish. Also something I that makes me wanna keep going back to it and listen to it more and more, stuff I that’s influenced by what I grew up listening too from the start.

MC: What formats do you release your music on? Are all your releases still available? Have you or would you release a bands old stuff like old demos and stuff or are you just into signing new bands?

DF: Compact Disc and Vinyl (only done Dead Horse – Boil(ing) 12” LP so far), more to come….. I will release only what I’m personal into and support 100%. I will do re-issues of classics as well new bands with amazing talent.

MC: I assume the label is a full time thing? How many people work at the label and how much time in a given day or week is spent doing label related stuff? How much mail do you send out and how much mail is incoming on any given day?

DF: Just me mainly, then Mike McCoy helps with online promotion, sales sheets & flyers. Also Dan Jones helps me keep track of inventory, selling at shows, flyers, ect….. Odd and end things !!!! Sometimes I get only a few orders and other days I get a lot all at once…. Very odd patterns most the time !!!!

MC: Obviously the underground has changed big time over the years. Where do you see the underground music scene in 5 years and what has been the biggest change that you have seen that has surprised you and do you think the underground scene has kinda reached its peak and will pretty much stay where it is at these days?

DF: I can’t stand the whole MP3 shitty quality and the whole downloading community of people who think that have 2 TB of music on a hard drive they are a collector or supporter in the scene. Checking it out and then buying what you like is one thing, but doing nothing but FREE downloading is pretty lame and a real enemy of the music business. I just think more people in metal actual still buy and support more than other genres, which struggle more. However, it’s still a problem in the metal community !!!! (i agree 100% with ya-chris).

MC: Are you at all surprised that the underground is still around and do you think it will ever die out?

DF: I knew it would still be around and think it’s going through another phase now again, fading out some the more trendy bands as well showing which of the older bands have fallen into that boring formula of a big label release (which seems to happen when labels push bands on time limits, ect….). Plus now doing a complete 360 degree turn back to where vinyl is more popular now these days too.

MC: Do you do a lot of trading with other labels and stuff? When a new release comes out how do you go about in promoting it? About how many releases do you do in any given year? About how much does it cost you in releasing a new cd for a band?

DF: I do as much as possible, but it can get expensive with extra shipping cost, ect…. Plus have to turn over what stuff you trade just as much sell your own product. As for what it cost it could vary in price from $1100-$3000 for 1000 copies on CD, depending on packaging DIGI CD or jewel and how many page booklet, ect…..

MC: Do you go to many shows these days and do you ever set up booths at any shows or shows like the Maryland Deathfest and sell stuff? Do you ever have any people come to your house direct and buy things ha ha?

DF: I go to less shows now I have a 3 year old and most the time I have to travel to Chicago, IL, Louisville, KY and once in a while Cincinati, Ohio. As for a festival like Maryland Deathfest it’s to many days for one and could cut out over half the bands most every year, to make it the perfect festival (I did go in 2006 which was a great year, but only 2 days still). I did vend CIM 2011 last year and had my artist Maax play live, which this year I will return to vend as well, have Abyss artist Radiation Sickness playing this years Central Illinois Metalfest 2012.

MC: What are some things you like to do when you are not doing label stuff? Is there any non-metal music you like and if so what style and what bands?

DF: Well it seems outside my family (wife & son), I don’t have much free time here or there to be honest as it takes a lot running the label my myself. Although I have a great PR team Clawhammer PR (Scott & Ryan) and a few friends who help me on the side doing certain task which frees up little extra time to focus on label and keeping up on orders, ect….. It’s a lot of fucking hard work for sure….

MC: How long do you see the label being around for? How did you come up with the name for it?

DF: I started the label around August 2008 full force, but original released some other stuff under Abyss Productions like Crimson Moon “To Embrace The Vampyric Blood” CD, Darkness Enshroud Demo, Extreme Hardcore Holocaust Compilation 1990 !!! (Classic). I just kept the name Abyss Records from after I opened a store front several years ago and named it Abyss Records after the whole Abyss Productions thing.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by Orbitball

Image

By Orbitball

Well since this band is from Sweden, they're quite a bit like Dismember. But there's more of a reverb/echo sound to the album, especially the vocals. I'd say that the album is best heard like any other album which is with headphones. You don't get keyed into an album as much if you're just listening to it on your stereo. Nothing much new that any other death metal band has put together really with this band, but they do show some promise. What they should've done though is cut out the lead guitars totally because they just are mediocre. It kills me when a promising band puts together good rhythms then the leads are below par.

Some things that were out of the ordinary band was that they included some clean tone guitar work. But the music in itself ranged from extremely brutal and heavy with vocals that were simply aggressive and riffs really fast. But tempo changes were all over the place. I suppose that's good in a way so that you don't get sick of listening to something that's totally slow the whole way through the album or an album that's filled with blast beating galore. One exception I must say about the constant blast beat that was released some years ago was Krisiun's "Conquerors of Armageddon". But with Corrosive Carcass, there are some fast tempos for a lot of the album.

The guitar riffs are really hard to make too much out on my stereo that's why I chose to listen to it on my laptop just to be able to hear everything going on. Now the music is decent and there's a lot of pinch harmonics in there riffs and slow chord based guitar along with the faster tremolo picking riffs. I did think that it's a promising release even though they totally sound like Dismember. But it's to be expected like I said since they're from Sweden. What stood out the most here were the guitars. I think that the riffs were really put together well and there's variety to the music.

Some bands can really hack it when it comes to rhythms and leads, but Corrosive Carcass does not hack it as I've said with the leads. Otherwise I would've given them a higher rating on this review. But let's dissect a little more and talk about the music. The intro riff is pretty fast and the sound of the guitars are super distorted. They are a band though that doesn't seem to incorporate too much technology in their recording. The riffs take a while to get into. They're not that catchy really, but the vocals and guitar go well along with one another. The guitars, drums, vocals and production were all good in achieving like I said that reverb sound.

That was their focus though, put something out there that does make their sound a little more intriguing and less Dismember-like. Even though they do sound like them, they incorporated some things that Dismember really hasn't done too much which is a clean tone guitar. I could be wrong about that though since I only own one Dismember release. I think that they are trying to establish themselves as death metal musicians and were doing something different with the music which was adding reverb/echo to the recording and include guitars that were filled with just so much distortion.

Corrosive Carcass is a death metal band that has enormous potential to write even better music in the future. But for now, "Composition of Flesh" was better than just mediocrity. They truly have a sound heard like no other besides Dismember which is what I've said repeatably with this review. They did need to take out the leads and just focus on rhythms until the leads get better played out. Who knows when that will be?! But at least they're trying to get more known within their genre of death metal. A lot of old school death metal fans I'm sure would appreciate this release since I know that many people that I know already dig this band. Don't miss out on it!

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) "Nihil" CD EP review by beyondmetal

Image

By GV

Noctis Imperium, are from Venezuela and its data is from 2003, starting under a primitive black metal without many variations to develop into the items we currently have a Black death metal and say firmly packed very well oriented. His early eps demos and I must say that my perception totally captured the band entirely and say the truth I could not understand your proposal clearly. When I received notes promotion of this work with the information himself Nicholas Barker (Cradle of Filt, Diimu Borgir, Lock Up and others) had recorded tracks by this "Nihil" seemed exotic and an act of mere advertising the band gradually I had to swallow my own words and thoughts distorted the situation, at first I did this work digitally until recently I bought this cd was physically and mainly for 2 reasons, one I like to have MP3 recordings and second this album and wanted it to have a clearer picture of the band and therefore the music of Noctis Imperium, the group was attracting increasing over time my attention. Let us go then to criticize this "Nihil", the dissemination of this work was accompanied by a European tour last year, the first track "ra-hoor-Khuit" is the introduction of what comes with "ad inferos descensus" direct, something melodic and very fast and is perhaps a little stand on other issues, "bring me sacrifice" continues with these canons, carbide while tearing melodically and namesake for the title of the band "noctis imperium" , and appeared in his first two demos to know the very "noctis imperium" and "divine nigth" here something more nuanced and polished where no escape to this day influences of Dark Funeral, also highlights the excellent cover of Morbid Angel "maze of torment "and part" through fire and cosmos "Live and as bonus tracks, we are more than a well-crafted album organically and perhaps as could have happened to many to hear this production so you catch with every listen and makes you appreciate many details in the first instance can be missed, a band very compact and rhythmic composition level, beyond having exotic note to Barker as a session musician, as described above influences Dark Funeral or a Behemoth, by moments but it remains the ownership anecdotes compositions honest and worked very intelligently, a general production surprised myself generally and honestly could not go unnoticed.

ROCKING CORPSES (Finland) "Rock 'n' Rott" CD review by http://www.globaldomination.se

Image

By Cobal

Well, well… Another death’n‘roll fresh project, uh? Many would say there’s no room in this world for another one, but then again, there ain’t room for anymore acts of any fucken style, right? Clean and harsh vocals in this one work for it to be a double-faced creature: it both works as a rocker death metal and as a hard rock album, except this guys added something that was fully unexpected.

Along the whole record, there’s quite a few moments when a horror punk-like sound will appear, and hell, did I enjoy that fusion! To tell you the truth, it makes all sense in the world to sing about zombies bringing both Barnes’ and Danzig’s conceptual works together. Why those metal police idiots moderating The Metal Archives have blacklisted Rocking Corpses is beyond me.

Rock’n‘rott could have definitely used a few more guitar solos, especially when it also flirts with a Motörhead-like feeling, and it’s a little bit too short. Not a must, but it won’t ever hurt to check it out.

7/10: Seven zombies chasing the same overweight fag, meaning ‘twas almost too easy to predict.

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) "Evighetens Dårar" DIGI CD review by http://www.globaldomination.se

Image

By BamaHammer

I’m just going to preface this by echoing Daemo’s sentiments about any possible bias that one may sense during this review. But seriously, I’m going to try to keep it as non-partisan as possible.

First of all, we all know Torture Division. You’re at Global Domination’s neck of the woods, so that much should be pretty obvious. If you don’t, well, first you’re retarded, and second you’re missing out. Big time. This is a band of dudes that prides themselves on creating the world’s best death metal, and when an album like this serves as their argument, it’s pretty fucken difficult to say otherwise.

Here’s the skinny. The vocals and bass are handled by the best growler in the world (who somehow finished second on this list, for fuck’s sake), Jörgen Sandström. The sheer power and brutality his vocal chords are capable of producing is mind-boggling, and he’s responsible for some of the best extreme vocals ever captured on record. The guitars are handled by Ibanez Xiphos lover/MMA enthusiast, Lord K Philipson, a man who I’m thinking you should probably know if you’re reading this review on this particular domain of the internets. And the drums are absolutely ripped to shreds by one of the best and most underrated drummers/rhythmic dynamos of the last decade, Tobias Gustafsson of Vomitory. Just reading this band’s lineup aloud can break a hymen.

As you may also already know, “Evighetens Dårar” is essentially the tidy compilation of three demos that were released by Torture Division between 2009 and 2010 by the same name. However, from the first moment you hear this material, you’ll quickly realize there’s nothing very “demo” about it, if you know what I mean. This is some excellent, extremely high quality stuff.

With a band that features members with résumés like this, then clearly the talent is there in all departments. These are veteran death metallers who know a thing or fifty about death metal songwriting and technical chops and whatnot. In addition to that, though, the album itself sounds utterly amazing. Just knowing that it was mastered and mixed by the great Dan Swanö, you should already know the quality that you’ll find in the production department. All the levels are perfect, the guitar sound is massive, the drums virtually explode from the speakers, and the bass possesses a bright, punchy clarity that does nothing but put a smile on my face whenever I hear it.

This album is 10 tracks (well 9 if you don’t count the epic 9-second “The Axe Murderer”) of what can truly be considered the best death metal the world has to offer. Every single riff is brutally relentless and catchy as hell. Tobben Gustafsson pulverizes the drum kit and lays down the groove in a way that only he can. And Jörgen Sandström uses his throat to punish and destroy anything in his path. You don’t get anything fancy here. No grandiose programmed electronics, no cleanly sung operas, no sweet little interludes.

I’ll admit, that “With Endless Wrath We Bring Upon Thee Our Infernal Torture” left a little something to be desired. It’s a fantastic record, but “Evighetens Dårar” is in a completely different universe. This is fucken flawless Swedish death metal in its purest sense. And it’s some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the world. Ever. Get this album. It’s fucken free for one thing, but fuck that. Buy a disc. You owe them that much just for making an album this close to sheer death metal perfection.

9.5: This is definitey a motherfucken KO. God help us all...

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By Angel Kilmistered

The Radiation Sickness formed in America (Indianapolis) in 1987, from the Doug Palmer and Ryan Rollins. The main reason why this band was formed, it was addiction, depression and love they had for the extreme underground scene and quickly began to bring up the bottom, and making a similar feel to the space. After some changes in the line up, the band recorded their first and legendary of the demo, "Elvis Ain't Dead" with influences from Napalm Death, Chaos UK, Discharge, Slayer, Cryptic Slaughter, The Accused. The Radiation Sickness spent all their time playing music in every event that they could, but in 1989 the founding member Ryan Rollins, commits suicide (after depression) and substantially delayed. After the addition of Byron Holton (bass), spend every weekend on the road, playing live with bands like Repulsion, Impetigo, Skeletal Earth, Immolation, Macabre, Dead Horse and advertise their new EP, "The Bounds of Reality". In 1990 they enter the studio to record the limited edition album, "The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity", which eventually gets great reviews in the field and two years later, they begin to work on new material. After years of stagnation, they make an all time classic reunion to play in the upcoming live. With a steady line up, the Doug Palmer (vocals), Tom Ball (guitar), Byron Holton (bass), Mike Herold (drums), they enter the studio again after twenty two years to record a new album, titled "Reflections of a Psychotic Past ". Old school American death metal, with many influences from Napalm Death, Asphyx, Cryptic Slaughter and Repulsion. Although composed of nineteen tracks, the length of the disc does not exceed forty minutes, and it's all a short time. Old school also is the production of the album ... Good overall feeling, but I think it loses a lot of volume (especially on vocals), unfortunately. Released in June by Abyss Records remastered and includes a copy of "The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity" (1990) and if all goes well, we will continue with several live appearances at various relevant events.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.greekrebels.gr

Image

By Angel Kilmistered

The Corrosive Carcass is a death metal band from Sweden (Hofors / Storvik) and consists of Jonathan Sjöblom (vocals), Christian Kanto (guitar), Mikael Lindorf (guitar), Peter Koistinaho (bass), Markus Janis (drums). Formed in 2004 to play the music they like and not deal with "signs" and "species". As the years passed of course, the band became more serious, she gained experience and style changes constantly, and still no one had solidify what they wanted to project outward. When Jonathan Sjöblom (vocals) joined the band - early 2007 - the Corrosive Carcass gradually began to prepare for live performances. They played in several tournaments in the same year and also prepared and a demo, which unfortunately was never released. After 2 years of changes in guitar and drums, finally release their first official demo, «Rot.In.Pieces. (2010) ". End of 2011, begin recording for their first full length album "Composition of Flesh", which was released in late June (2012) from Abyss Records. The album begins with full old school Swedish death metal attack and reminds bands in musical style: Death Breath, Entombed, Autopsy, Dismember, etc., etc. Of course that will appeal to all fans of this classic kind then. The only thing I 'spoiled' bit the whole picture is the production of the tray and especially the points (although aggressive) drums. Very "tremblarista" dry and without much dynamics and the crash and high hat high enough ...! Logically wanted to give a more old school atmosphere, but at this point, I overdo it, unfortunately. Otherwise I was quite pleased, for the first rich (talking about thirteen tracks), full length release and have not noticed any particular defect, the Swedes. The "Composition of Flesh", is so full of 'traditional Sweden "and so" in phase "for the first movement of band that makes you sorry lot! Extreme, but not tiring, fast, but not meaningless, orexatoi, but not frivolous, melodic, but not boring. These are the Corrosive Carcass of 2012 and I hope soon next job, and many live.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by wickedchannel

Image

Swedish death metal act Daemonicus does it the right way. With their latest release, Deadwork, Daemonicus brings us good old-fashioned Swedish death metal. Deadwork is the follow up to 2009′s Host of Rotting Flesh and Deadwork could just surpass their debut effort. It surely surpassed it in intensity alone.

Deadwork is unrelenting in its aggression and that is the only way that I would have it. Daemonicus has tapped every aspect of Swedish death metal and rolled it up into one evil package for our listening pleasure. Songs like We Feast on Your Flesh are heavily riff-driven and are powered by some seriously intense riffs which never stop, while more melodic pieces like the opening of The Hymn of Ubo Sathla are served up. Of course, the clean part of The Hymn of Ubo Sathla is short lived, but the song itself has a quasi-melodic death metal feel with more emphasis on the death metal than the melodies.

Overall, Deadwork is one of the best sophmore efforts that I have heard all year and has a really good chance of being added to my top ten list of albums for 2012.

DAEMONICUS (Sweden) "Deadwork" CD review by http://www.legacy.de

Image

By Alexander Renner

With Revel In Flesh, Deserted Fear and other needs to the death metal to make his offspring not worry. Daemonicus comes with another hot iron from Sweden. At present ten songs, these five guys an album full of melodic death metal for Swedish design. The first song, 'A Work Of Art Dead' starts quietly before the instruments started loudly and make equally clear that scepter is here swinging. Some recalls the music of Dark Tranquillity, although the vocals sound a bit harsh and evil. In 'The Grandeur Of Total Termination' come to memories of the new Grave with a very blackigen singing. The song is quite melodious and also has faster parts, the rest is more often found in midtempo. 'Embracing Her Remains' begins with a sample before the song gets going pretty groovy, the drums drive the track and want to get faster. With 'We Fast On Your Flesh' will quickly without using blast beats, which is in the old Death Metal anyway hardly used. An acoustic guitar introduces 'The Hymn Of Udo Sathla' and is supported by sporadic drums before the rest starts and one continues in the usual way. By the rather harsh vocals reach even so blackige bands like Necrophobic and Lord Belial. It has in the whole CD but always feel that you have heard it all before, but a real comparison is not a one. Fans of Swedish Death can access regardless.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD / LP review by forbidden-magazine

Image

By Janet Willis

Right from the start this album is simply obliterating!!! I guess the best way to go about describing the Desultor sound would be to say that it’s the current dark and melodic prog metal brutality of Helstar with some crushing death metal weight in the riffs, hints of thrash neck snapping rhythms and the scorching breath of black metal. The vocals are clean and more traditional metal than extreme, but thankfully not of the Euro power metal vain. Desultor really defies definition, songs like “Denied” remind me a bit of recent Hirax with the clean vocals that still carry an attitude and a bit of gruffness before belting out some solid highs. The rhythm is solid thrash and has a definitive assault to knock your block off, as the song literally forms a cyclone around you creating a vacuum in which you are inevitably consumed, even in the more melodic breaks between the bulldozing.

“Division Insane” is another blatant assault to the senses and also has enough catchy phrases that gets inside your subconscious and haunts your mind for some time to come. Amidst the continual pummeling drums and battering ram riffing there is still time to throw in a sinister and majestic lead to hail Hell.

My standout track is “Another World” though, for some reason the melodic death pulse really gets my adrenaline raging and blood surging through my veins like being set on fire, but it’s the epic melodic vocal delivery of the “When you come to this….you will see….” lyrics that instantly makes my skin go cold and tingly like electric currents are running along the surface of my skin. “Another World” almost feels like it’s the soundtrack to the coming of some celestial being.

“And So We Bleed” somewhat follows the same melodic metal with slight prog leanings of “Another World”, especially in the vocal delivery and more of the epic and dark cosmic atmosphere screaming through like a bullet through the ears. The throttle of the rhythms throughout is like a speed train on warp drive coming right at you while you’re tied to the track.

Desultor seems to have this uncanny ability to craft brutality, melody, create these almost symphonic dynamical atmospheres, throw in some prog metal, into this concoction of everything that I love about metal across the spectrum that is just perfectly placed. Every rhythm is solid, many are addictive and manage to rewire your neural pathways in order to remain fixed in them so that you can always feel and recall them. The experience of listening to Desultor reminds me of that sensation I’d gotten when first hearing Arcturus’ Sideshow Symphonies, where the metal becomes physically moving and intense. I can’t even remember the last time a new metal album made me feel as alive as this one does and that statement is me writing a check that my ass can certainly cash as even amongst the great and energetic metal releases out there, Desultor just seems to disintegrate them in my opinion.
