Pah I know, I wish I was at least conversational. My french education mainly consisted of playing bingo. The teacher would call out a french word and we'd match it up to the corresponding animal, place, or whatever on our cards. 'Oh, vache, yeah that's a cow and look I got a line, bingo!'. :/

Technically, I did reach a conversational level by the end of my French 11 class (when a minimum third-year language course was required to apply to a university). After the class ended and summer came, I didn't use any French and everything I had learned from French 10-onwards was completely forgotten...

If I had a reason at the time to apply my limited knowledge, I would have at the very least been able to converse with a living, breathing human being as opposed to listening to a tape about which days of the week Francois rode his bicycle to school.

Funeralopolis and the title track are cool, the rest of it....not so much.

I love Dopethrone the whole way through. My favourite tracks are the title track (seems to be most people's favourite track, and for good reason) and Weird Tales. Also, Hills Have Eyes is a perfect example of how to do a short interlude.

Out of curiousity, which era of Electric Wizard do you prefer over Dopethrone then? I'm not trying to call you out or anything, I'm just genuinely curious as Dopethrone is my favourite Electric Wizard album.

Edit: Directed at Aeonblade, other people posted just before I made mine :(

That's actually the only full EW album I've heard. Had heard a bunch of random tracks before, but I don't really like stoner metal at all. Bought Dopethrone for shits and giggles awhile back because I was living with my friend who is a huge pothead, thought it might be fun. I can listen to it when I flying high, but otherwise the album is just a chore.

Fair enough, I can see why you wouldn't really enjoy it regularly (ie sober) if you don't like stoner metal to begin with.

Speaking of Electric Wizard, does anyone else feel that the debut is massively under appreciated? I know it's in a more traditional style, but they do a damn good job at it. Black Butterfly is one of my favourite songs by them and Mountains of Mars is a perfect psychedelic interlude.

Dopethrone is neat, but it's nothing compared to the absolute perfection of Come My Fanatics. The wandering and sometimes leading bass, incredible production, and some of Jus' best lyrics ever. Shit, even the movie samples are perfect.

Come My Fanatics is great, and everything about it is what is absent in Dopethrone. The tone is great, the lyrics are very imaginitive, and the drums and bass are able to carry the song, rather than falling into the trap of "it's all about the guitar riffs" that Electric Wizard have become stuck in increasingly over time.

@dystopia4: Totally. That debut is awesome and it's probably my second favourite Electric Wizard release. In other news, I finally heard a non-shitty LLN band thanks to Zodijackyl. Torgeist actually sound evil, don't sound like complete shit, and made much that was listenable (and even memorable).

Dopethrone, compared to their others is well recieved even outside the Metal community. Their others get hardly the appreciation they deserve. Also, since were talking about Electric Wizard I recently got a friend of mine into Doom Metal because of them. I showed him "Venus In Furs" and he now regularly listens to Pagan Altar and other stoner rock oddities I'm not familiar with. I feel accomplished.

Listening to Electric Wizard is like reading a greasy Weird Fiction rag under the covers at night. Pagan Altar, on the other hand, is like astral projecting to an interdimensional cabal where all the sorcerors of untold aeons force you to bear witness their wisdom and wiles.

If I'm being unclear: Listen to Pagan Altar.

I love Pagan Altar. A lot of their songs are really easy to play too if your a guitarist. However matching their guitar tone is pretty hard if your not an equipment specialist :|

Loved that description. Pagan Altar is for really cool people, simplistic but utter ARSE KICKING BADASSERY.

Damnit, Pagan Altar's singer reminds me of someone, but I can't put my finger on it. Only ever heard Magical and Mythical or whatever before. A bit overlong, but all the English folk stuff was cool. As big of a cock the Shadow Kingdom guy is, I'll pick up the reissues when he does them.

"Doom Metal"
/me calls Napero on his special "genre with capital letters" emergency 24hours line.

But yeah, Pagan Altar is awesome "inb4 the vocalist sucks" gtfo!

But...but...unlike other genres. I feel like "Doom" should be capitalized. Not only is it the most superior of genres, the word "doom" just doesn't look as cool lowercase.

Anyone who says their vocalist sucks is a tool. It's the part which makes the band.

I'm curious of his age. Considering his son (Alan Jones) is 50 years old it would have to put him in the early 70's very late 60's at the youngest.

Many that like Dopethrone deserve death. Some that don't like Dopethrone deserve life. Can you give it to them, Tony? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the site owners cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Zodijackyl has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over.

But he likes Morbid Angel's latest, he must be on Rob Halford's "soon to be devoured" list!

I love Pagan Altar's vocals. It's not even like Ozzy where I can see why people don't like them - the vocals in PA are just amazingly unique and weird. He's also got a shitload of soul and emotion to his performance that really elevate him to the next level...one listen to "The Erl King" is enough to stop your heart with how good it is.

Damn. Now I want to listen to Mystical and Magical again - that album has always sort of been there at the strangest and most pivotal times of my life. Then I just kind of forget about it until it ends up drawing me back in again.

I have to do some practical psychology on participants, with a deadline in about eight days time. While the uni has furnished me with materials, such as questionnaires, I can't find any indication as to what I'm actually supposed to do, or what order, or upon what kind of demographic. They might as well have just given me a miscellaneous pile of Lego and told me to make use of it, for 15% of my grade.

This guy, maybe? He always reminded me of Terry Jones, although the band is so obscure I would be a bit surprised if it actually was that guy.

Perhaps Mark Shelton? I believe there's a notable similarity between those two guys, vocally speaking.

Might have just been The Shark. Thought it might be someone else, but who the hell knows? It was 3 am when I posted that.

That Ageless Wisdom song was pretty rad, though.

I just found this on their website and thought it might be of some interest to you. I don't play guitar so I have no idea if this helps at all:

"As a matter of note, for any interested parties, Alan uses a Hagstrom ‘Super Swede’ with a Derringer pick up at the neck and a Demarzio at the bridge. The Amp is a 100W Marshall top (valve) through 2 x 4 x 12”s. "

I still have such a hard time believing that Alan and Terry aren't brothers. They all look similarly aged in those early photo shoots! It would be so weird to be in an absolutely KILLER band with your own father singing about Satan and witches and blood stained altars.

P.S. Satan's Henchmen has one of the greatest riffs I've ever heard. Jamming The Lords of Hypocrisy right now.
