Uh, yeah. What's your point?
1980 is quite a few years after Blast, and also quite a few years after the first wave of Punk (and even "Hardcore" Punk).

I still don't think Blast invented Hardcore, sorry. Hell, neither Discharge (they didn't invent Hair Metal either, but they sure seemed to be fine picking that style up, too)... :|

More Japanese HC/Crasher Punk/Crust shit:

Outo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fseEwEUUGvc (honestly don't know if this is about Cocaine or Coca-Cola)
Chaos CH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gotdrnLzUHI
Real Reggae: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMnbLq1nwL4

Effigy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdYXsKk64mc

and lots more I can't think of right now.
I think Flash Gordon might be from Japan, too (not sure though, and my internet connection is way too shitty and slow for me to want to try to find out right now)

Did anybody say Gauze?

Can you be more specific in your request? I could spend all day thinking up bands that have "some similar sound" to that song.
What aspects in particular do you find most appealing?

But the Blast song is besides the vocals all out hardcore punk... I know Discharge didn't really invent it but they where the closest comparison with early hc acts, with the riffs and drumming pace of Blast.

Yeah I know, but I still like some of that shit, even tho I never been a kind of fan of any band that hates their bad stuff, I just laugh at it and takes it as something fun... I even play drums in a band called Anger Burning ;)

Hello Punk/HC/Crust people. Can anyone help to classify the heavier elements of the UK band Crow? They have been one of my favourite bands for nearly 20 years, and I still can't decide if it's punk, thrash, crust or whatever. They incorporate a myriad of different other styles in their sound, from prog/space-rock to funk and dub, but it's the heavier aspect that I struggle to accurately define. Since the band's origins were the crusty/traveller/squat scene of the late 80s, I have tended in the past to refer to them as Crust Punk, but that genre tag is closer to Grindcore these days, and they certainly aren't that extreme. It's too complex for straight-up Punk, not aggresive enough for HC, not polished enough for Metal.

Plus the 2nd half of this song from about 3:40 onwards:

Also, can you recommend any bands that sound similar to these heavier aspects?

Japan has it's own breed of super noisy Hardcore bands, there was some discussion a little while ago in this thread about it. Aside from that though I guess it's based on whatever the band calls themselves.

I'm not talking about the Japanese Crust band Crow. The UK one, from Whitstable.

I'm not familiar with Crow, but I am curious to hear their music now... do you have any links to their music online?
A cursory search of YouTube yielded no results.

I'm not knocking Blast or D-charge or anything like that. I do think it's pretty cool, but I still just personally see it more as a precursor to extreme metal than hardcore punk, even though there are similarities between all 3 that could be drawn.

I look at this similarly to how I look at the individual evolutions of Crust and BM, which both seem to have some similar aesthetics, and even some early influences, but which had been subcultures largely independent of one another until later on when they started taking influence from each other.

I feel like I might've already asked for these sorts of recommendations before, but IDK if it was on here, and I can't find it if I did.

I want some good fucking raw, urgent, sloppy, exuberant and "soulful"/emotive DIY Pop-Punk/"Region Rock" music recommendations! I love the shit, but I can't listen to the same few records/rips forever!

I am totally obsessed with Southern Pop-Punk and Region Rock:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq6wqesP8aE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU59NOqUaAo&t=03m06s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCpqHGGHHpg&t=04m12s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_As8xG--D4M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtUXXUgSGT8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41cXJwY5AMA

So stuff like that! Old or new, doesn't matter. Doesn't matter where it's coming from either, just as long as it's got some fucking soul and it's not all songs about relationships or something. I need THE GOOD STUFF. The stuff that's moving and bitter-sweet and catchy as all get out...

I am already familiar with the popular blogs, Region Rock and More, Remote Outposts and Nostalgia Isn't What It Used To Be, by the way. I have (practically) cleaned those out!

PS: The dude who asked about bands similar to old NOFX may like some of those bands I linked. IDK, maybe not at all, though... Think of this post as part example for my own requests, part response to the earlier post, I guess!

RE: Crow

Oh... wow, I am fucking blind. Totally glossed over that whole chunk of the post, apparently.
I need to stop doing that shit! :boo:

Huh. Interesting. I definitely hear what you mean when you mentioned "Funk"... IDK what to say. I think this is kind like a Punk group's take on 90's "Alternative" Metal/Rock (super descriptive, I know)... Like a less grandiose, more straightforward Faith No More made by people who listened to loads of Amebix in the years prior.

"Alterna-Crust"...

No, but I think "Alternative" is a pretty accurate and succinct way of describing their sound. Hard rock format in a package that fuses different styles in a relatively fluid, unpretentious manner.

This is all based only on hearing the first song, though...

ERMAHGERD...

Yeah, this is not bad. It sort of reminds me of some earlier Future Virgins (who I linked, BTW) and some of the associated bands.
Only basing that on what I've heard of the first song so far, but it seems like something I could enjoy.

Not quite as speedy and raw as the first three links I have (those are the main focus, though the others are great, even though they are more comparable to this in terms of production and pace), but it seems good.

Glad you dig it, it's not too fast but catchy as hell, I've listened to that album probably 50 times in the last month... can't get enough. Check out the split with Culo and the False Teeth EP as well which are all on their bandcamp. Blind Wink treads more towards noise rock I guess so if you dig that kinda stuff you should check that out as well.

For faster catchy stuff maybe try The Ergs!
http://gravemistakerecords.bandcamp.com ... -compactor

The rest of their albums are WAY more pop punk than that EP but it's a good one for sure.

Maybe Government Warning as well though that's getting away from the pop punk side of things

Oh, c'mon, now! It was entirely meant to be " :ugh: "!
It was only a joke, I swear.

Though it does sound like "Alternative" Rock/Metal to my ears.

Also, I need to check out dontlivefastdie's rec again. I derped on that. sort of started listening to them, then got sidetracked and never finished, but I appreciate the recommendation, still.

I talked shit about the new Martyrdod around the time it first came out, but I've come to actually enjoy it. I don't like it as much as their previous releases, but it's not as bad as I once said it was.

I don't know if this exactly fits under this thread, but it is kinda a punk request, so I'll give it a shot: My friend recently introduced me to folk punk through Andrew Jackson Jihad, so I was wondering could anyone recommend to me some folk punk like Andrew Jackson Jihad or Blackbird Raum?
I'm pretty unfamialiar with the genre, so any help is appreciated, thanks.

I'm looking for more neocrust in the style of Vestiges, Fall of Efrafa, Downfall of Gaia, Alpinist, Masakari (a bit different than the others but I get a similar vibe from them), and Ecocide (also a bit different but I do really like the violin parts).

Hail Seizures is pretty awesome, especially For the Ruin and the split with Blackbird Raum. They're from Olympia and generally play pretty fast music that resembles metal at times. They've also got some of the best gang vocal work I've heard from bands like this.

The Manx is probably the most similar to Blackbird Raum that I've found in terms of instrumentation and vocal style.

I'd also recommend Defiance, Ohio, who are a bit softer/slower, and The Pasties who have a split with Hail Seizures.

Rosa sounds a bit like Defiance, Ohio, and for an even softer/more relaxed style than that check out Moon Bandits and IGAF Sequoia.

I know this is an old request but if you want to explore the various strains and subgenres of the real "emocore" that started in the 80s and kinda died off by the mid-90s, this site is a great resource:

http://fourfa.com/

As you go through the historical lineage, you'll notice that the bands got more aggressive as screamier once the early 90s hit. Most of the stuff released after the mid-90s had no real connection to the original scene or idea of what the whole thing was...I don't want to knock anyone that gave you recs on this stuff but most of the bands they mentioned were late-comer wagon-jumpers and/or copycat type bands.

This is a later band (with members from some earlier Japanese hardcore bands), but my favorite Japanese hardcore band that I have ever heard is Paintbox. If you like vinyl, Prank Records reissued most of their catalog on wax. IMHO they never made a bad record and all their stuff was great.

Thanks for the recs! I'll be sure to check out those bands.
Edit: Hail Seizures & The Manx were both really cool, still have to check out the rest though.

A couple neocrust bands & bands with a similar vibe you might like are Dead to a Dying World, who play a mix of neocrust with some black metal and symphonic elements, Wretched of the Earth, and Momentum, who are more of a hardcore punk band, but they also give off a similar vibe to some of the bands you mentioned, as well as featuring the vocalist from Fall of Efrafa & Light Bearer.

That's awesome Anger Burning is great! Where can I pick up When? I was going to get it from soap&spikes.com but it sold out really fast.

All D-Beat fans need to check out the UK band Disaster. Their War Cry 12", which I think came out in 1990, is incredible! It was reissued recently with a flexi containing 2 more songs.

And I can't believe nobody has mentioned The Varukers yet. Their Another Religion, Another War 12" is some amazing Discharge worship. Shortly after that they got some Sacrilege members and released One Struggle One Fight which has a great metal influence.

I actually prefer their final LP (Trip, Trance, and Travelling) over their first album...you might want to try that one if you think you'd like a more polished and sometimes experimental take on Japanese hardcore.

Alliance,Assault, Judgement, Forward, and Jabara are some more recent bands I also enjoy in addition to Paintbox.

I like Gauze and Bastard quite a bit, but for older Japanese hardcore, I think Lip Cream and Deathside were the best of the lot. You may also like Systematic Death and The Sexual.

This is a later band (with members from some earlier Japanese hardcore bands), but my favorite Japanese hardcore band that I have ever heard is Paintbox. If you like vinyl, Prank Records reissued most of their catalog on wax. IMHO they never made a bad record and all their stuff was great.

I've checked their first album and it's cool and all but it didn't clicked with me.

I've been hearing Gauze and Bastard lately, holy shit these bands slay.

Looking for more pissed off, heavy and violent power violence like Sex Prisoner, Mind Eraser, Hatred Surge, Despise You, etc. If it's obvious skip it, if not let me know

Key points
-pissed off and vicious vocals
-beatdown sections
-beatdown sections
-beatdown sections

<Listens to PV, has no clue what the fuck a "beatdown section" is. Thinks it sounds like some brocore nonsense for Weekend Nachos fanboys>

Please explain in detail... is that just another word for "breakdowns", because it sounds exactly like something some bro-y, hcbroz4lyfbro-type "PV" band like the WN of today would be playing, and I can't really help you with any recommendations if that's the case.

I mean, am I really supposed to even know what that means? I've literally never heard "beatdown section" used to describe any aspect of any genre of music... Sounds incredibly silly, TBH. :|

I feel like you're looking more for something like Emmure more than any PV band based solely on how goofy that term sounds, and you REALLY seem to want those. I mean, you listed it THREE TIMES!
