i have a Scorched-Earth - Mars cd here that sounds like it has some skips, i checked the disc for scratches and lo! looks like a cheap home made disc.
even the booklet looks a bit cheap, the folds are cracking.

the centre of the disc doesn't say "cd-r" but it has this R052-2634-8174
it's a greenish colour too, not silver...
does anyone else have a copy of this to compare?

the matrix code matches for discogs but hell still could be a fake.

could be a CD-r "test press", maybe?

I know these days promos/test copies are almost all (high-grade) CDr versions of releases, even ones to be pressed on proper CD's.
Just a theory, though.

I have no idea... I will say that the printing is usually less quality, but test press CDr's typically have some indication of being test/promo copies, too... Example: http://www.discogs.com/Anal-Cunt-Fuckin ... se/3314693

(notice the crappy Arial font slapped over the main artwork).

I guess it's most likely a cheap bootleg, but I would not want to say "yes, I definitely believe it's a bootleg"

EDIT: Maybe it was just incorrectly, unwittingly, or dishonestly labeled/marketed as "CD" too?
A lot of bands get "professional" CDr's done these days, but they are still CDr's, and they are still susceptible to degradation.

just an FYI: the AC CDr is a "legit" test press/promo copy sent out by the label. It does look pretty shoddy, though.

PS: if you read the notes on the AC entry, I describe the disc's data surface, and if the description matches your disc, it probably is a factory-made CDr.

The data side scan of your disc definitely does appear to me a possible CDr.

I've worked stage for a couple of Scorched Earth shows before, such a fun band. If I still had contact info I could ask the band but I lost a bunch of old numbers :(

well, if it IS like my AxCx promo, then it will only have a very, very subtle green tint (not one that is instantly noticeable like with store-bought CDr's), and you won't be able to see any sort of clear reflection in it the way you can a pressed silver CD. All light it reflects is kind of fuzzy and hidden/blocked by glare.

If you can, you should get in touch with the band and ask them about it.
EDIT: D'oh! I only just noticed there were new posts, so this suggestion's totally redundant... :boo:

Could just be a shitty, defective pressing, perhaps.

I know Cleopatra Records have made a lot of defective discs in their time. I have one myself. I still kick myself for shelling out $6 on a crappy, used Cleo. Recs cash-in record (that doesn't even work!): a compilation paying tribute to Skinny Puppy...

well this is interesting, i compared it to my vengeance rising bootleg [grrr] and the 'matrix' number starts the same
scorched earth: R052-2634-8174
vengeance rising: R052-2804-6215

i'll make contact with the band and or their distro but if anyone has this cd feel free to comment in here or send me a pm or put up some scans or photos etc
