I want to hear it before I spend any money on it, but the internet's not playing nice.

Check EvilLegend's link, the album is fully there, I simply dislike listening to a full album on bandcamp.

At first I was disappointed with Grand Gesture of Defiance, maybe because I expected some major progression in sound, but slowly the quality of the songwriting sank in. I dare you to get the chorus of "The Graveyard of Broken Dreams" out of your head once it sticks. Grand Gesture's a very easy listen and feels more dynamic than Sinews of Anguish. I praised Sinews to high heavens the year it came out but when I revisited it recently --after hearing Grand Gesture-- the monotony of the album became more noticeable. The shorter length of Grand Gesture works in the band's favor. For the record I did not like the Salvation EP much, except the first track, so I'm happy the band's back on track after that slump.

Looking for some epic doom bands in the vein of Russia's Scald. I already know a selection of bands, such as Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Solstice, DoomSword, Mael Mórdha, Wishdoom, Gods Tower and Ereb Altor, but Scald just seems to be different than a lot of them. I'm not entirely sure why, probably the vocals (how they transition from lower operatic stuff to the high epic wail and the very heavy rich-sounding guitars). Anyway, any recommendations for bands or individual albums similar to Scald would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

How about Mirror Of Deception - Foregone? These guys really remind me of Scald, sans the vocals, but no-one sounded quite like Agyl.

Have anyone heard Snailking (yes, they took the name from a Ufomammut album). They're based in Sweden and I have had some contact with the groups' driving force/drummer and I was the first to hear their fullength Samsara as well as some early demos. Unbelievably droney, heavy and sludgy and just incredibly awesome! Mix Electric Wizard, Yob, Neurosis and (surprise!) Ufomammut together and that'll probably give you a grasp of what they do.

Snailking. I definitely dig the title track on Samsara but the other tracks sound mediocre in (at least) my ears.

Speaking of Swedish doom...I presume you're familiar with Suma and Kongh? If not, totally worth checking in.

Speaking of Kongh...They're opening for mighty Electric Wizard in October in Sweden. Hells to yes!

Yeah, thanks for the recs. I know most sludge/stoner/drone bands from Sweden but I prefer trad doom. I'll attend the EW gig but will probably skip Kongh. Seen them live twice and I wasn't impressed. Ocean Chief would have been much cooler as the supporting act!

Have never seen Kongh but loved the Counting Heartbeats release so I'm looking a little forward to see them , but off of course I'm there to see the Wizard, it'll be my second time seeing 'em.

On the other hand a completely agree that Ocean Chief would've been a better opening act, without a doubt Sweden's best doom. Or why not Saturnalia Temple?!

I feel that Kongh would be better suited to open for Eyehategod or Crowbar or something like that.

And excuse me for the following offtopic but when the hell do I get upgraded from Mallcore Kid?! An evil and necro sob like myself can't have that title...

Okey. Thanks for your answers, man. And no, I'll never be a post whore (Quality before Quantity is my motto on all forums I'm active at).

And to be a liiittle bit ontopic;
What do y'all think about A Storm of Light? My first exposure with the band was when they opened for Sleep in Sweden in May. Really heavy and good.

I've only heard one of their album but to me they seem a bit hung on to the Neurosis similarities, although the approach is clearly different. It left a decent impression but nothing everlasting I guess. But then again when the obligatory comparison is made against Neurosis it's kind of hard to blown away by anything. :p

@BaloroftheEvilEye: Yeah, thanks dude. This is awesome. The music is extremely Scald-y and the vocals are also pretty cool. Nice.

@Metantoine: It seems either a trend is developing here, or you underestimated my homework. I know THOSE bands as well. Haha. But cheers again anyway.

I'm looking for the really crushing and extreme sludge.
Stuff like this.
Cough - At the Gates of Madness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkQalxGTVBc

Noothgrush - Erode the Person
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_CRmX8tvUQ

Grief is another one along the lines of what I am looking for. I also like Iron Monkey and Eyehategod a lot but they aren't quite as slow as what I want as they are more groove oriented.

Not looking for the stoner/sludge style.

Did you listen to all the albums? Any in particular that stood out and you want to recommend? You know I listened to The Burl, the Earth, the Aether once to mixed results but I'm willing to give the band another chance. The time is right for their kind of music.

I heard Dream Dragon (very psychedelic stuff, very good), Tome of the Future Ancients (kinda boring and overlong) and The Sorrowful Son (good and up to the point). I got The Burl...too I'll check it out soon

Also, I added their split with Fellwoods, a pretty good vintage hard rock band from the US, their first full lenght is free on their bandcamp.

Pelican billed with Sun O)))?! Now that's weird! I envy you for having the chance to catch them live though, some bands seem to never come to Portugal... :annoyed:

Cult Of Luna is pretty rad and I actually had the chance of seeing them in 2007, in an old abandoned cathedral just 20 minutes away from my house. Now that was awesome! The acoustic of the place and the perfect sound just made up for a staggering show. One of the best I've seen along with Isis, which I was lucky enough to see just before they broke up. Jeff Caxide is a beast on the bass guitar!

Guys, any general recs for modern Stoner/Southern album? Think of Down's Stone The Crow but heavier and less acoustic guitars. I prefer the faster paced/midpaced tracks of Alabama Thunderpussy but drenched in Southern fried goodness.
