So i've been watching alot of Game of Thrones lately and playing a bit of Skyrim so i feel like listening to some music with a similar epic feel to it. Any sub-genre is good but I'm already a huge fan of viking era Bathory and Falkenbach so stuff like that would be great. Thanks for any suggestions

For quality Bathory clones check out Bloodshed Walhalla, Ereb Altor, especially the first two and Iuvenes, these would be some of the more well know bands in this style. An album quite new to me and one I have been digging the hell out of lately is the uk's Sleipnir. Their debut album 'Bloodbrothers' is like the Viking national anthem! The choirs are huge and music is very epic, these guys need to be more popular, check it out.
For less harsh sounding check out Scald, Zeminal and Atlantean Kodex.

I recommend a norwegian black metal band called frostmoon. They only released one compilation album. Their material is more than excellent. It's none of that new borknagar style stuff. It's friggin awesome. Vikingmakt. Thank me later.

I'm seconding windir.

Stormm has pretty much covered the best, but I highly recommend Yggdrassil, Ildra, Morrigan and Nokturnal Mortum, if you've somehow missed or avoided them.

Yggdassil is pretty melodic (but not cheesey) pagan black metal.

Ildra is a great English band taking influence from Moonsorrow, but not so blatantly as Finsterforst.

Morrigan is some powerful Bathory worship, mostly very blackened, but with some beautiful passages with clean vocals. The albums Celts and Headcult are their best work.

Nokturnal Mortum, you've probably heard of, but if not, give Voice of Steel a try. This album is chock full of great, mixed vocal work, as well as interesting guitarwork.

Oakenshield started out as a Falkenbach clone, but they've come into their own on their most recent album. definitely worth a listen.

You could check Doomsword, they have some stuff about Vikings, but mostly Celts, the atmospheres are similar though.

Dimmu Borgir does not fit the OP's request.

Try listening to the music you recommend before you recommend it...

for epic viking stuff with black/death metal vocals and clean sections check out Hammer Horde
their debut album Under the Mighty Oath is amazing
their recent album is cool i guess...

Legend's "From the Fjords" is an epic piece of heavy metal - a full album with viking themes with a bit of deviation into general fantasy, and one song in the middle that breaks the theme. Musically, it's a mix of traditional heavy metal and 70s progressive, hard, and psychedelic rock. Something like a mix of Manilla Road, Iron Butterfly, and Rush.

I actually didn't! I omitted them because they deal specifically in Greek legends, but if he's placing more emphasis on "epic", than he can't go wrong with them ;)

I'd say Manilla Road's Voyager is pretty appropriate.

Graveland (newer). One of the cases where student (Darken) has outdone the Master (Quorthon).

More obvious ones: Moonsorrow, Stormheit, Einherjer, Storm, Forefather, Hordak, Svartsot

I'll second Einherjer. "Norron" fits so well while dungeon delving along the northern coastline...

Dunno about that. Definitely Quorthon's vocals are vastly superior.

Umm, I don't think that Quorthon's viking era vocals are something untoppable in genre, even though I like them more than Darken's. Anyway, in this type of music I don't find the vocals to be as important as in most other usual metal.

Prolly way too obvious, but moonsorrow's early works are so damn epic with horses, campfires, battle cries and sword clanging, it makes me want to swing a two handed axe like an Orc!

SIG:AR:TYR is atmospheric/acoustic viking metal quite similar to Bathory, Falkenbach and even Agalloch in my ears.

http://sigartyr.bandcamp.com/album/beyo ... orth-winds

Good to see this thread. I didn't know there were other Bathory-style bands beyond a few already mentioned here, so now I have some digging to do.
