http://www.metal-archives.com/reviews/I ... pireKiller

This review annoyed me. Good album, but the guy religiously uses these words: light, dark, happy, and sad.

Quote:
And also, whereas "Somewhere in Time" had quite a light and somewhat "happy" power metal sound, this album's sound is a unique blend of power metal and a light shade of doom metal. This is most noticeable on the opening track "Moonchild" which is fairly dark but at the same time kind of light.

Quote:
"The Clairvoyant" is one of the lighter songs on this album, which might be explained by the fact that it was the third single released from this album. The verses are quite sad whereas the chorus is quite happy, which creates an interesting mix between sadness and happiness. It's sad that Adrian's solo is too short, because it's great IMO.

Way to much track-by-track going on in that review. Also, the guy made really, really obvious choices when choosing what bands to review.

By the way, Gunther, kudos for that positive Ne Obliviscaris review. I hadn't seen anyone else enjoy it.

Are you talking about the review or the release? Because a lot of people have enjoyed that album...

The release. Everyone I saw speaking of it was crapping on it, calling it pointless, incoherent, comparing it to Opeth etc..

:???:

Are you talking about just random people or reviewers on this site? Because I wouldn't consider a cumulative score of 87% the definition of an album getting crapped on if it is the latter. I was critical of the album being a bit convoluted at times and made a brief comparison to Opeth (along with Emperor and To-Mera, 2 bands I listen to regularly), but I thought it was a good album and worthy of checking into despite some accessibility issues.

If anything I think people are way too nice to that band in general.

I just looked at the demo reviews. Probably the most resounding praise for a demo I've seen on this website.

Nah, not the demo, everyone loved it. I was also speaking about on the forum, and on the thread about the album. Gunther is the first actually great reviewer that tackled it.

Metantoine's new review was good, you aficionados should read it. I like when reviewers step away from the ''this album is good because of this and this, the end.'' style and actually try something different.

I second this. Great review, and that style is really growing on me.

In other news, I slightly modified my BBE review and changed my rating to a 98%. I find that although I do believe it to be a top-flight record in every way, my personal feelings toward it don't reflect the other perfect scores I'd give to albums that have been my favorites for years and are special to me in some way. I should note that this doesn't indicate an ideology change to that of the 'there's no such thing as a perfect album' variety (which I'm pretty sure I will never support). I think everyone has their idea of what a 100% album should be, and for me, in retrospect, this isn't quite it. Maybe someday.

Yeah, the story in the beginning was entertaining. Good review for sure. He showed me some of their music and they're a really great band. The album before the one he reviewed is really great too, a lot more emphasis on heavy parts.

Just read Napero's review where he calls the internet the musical monsanto, really good stuff. He had some very interesting opinions on the internet's effect on music:

Zodijackyl's review for that Straight Line Stitch EP has me confused about one thing. The review talks about female vocals, yet the line-up does not mention a female vocalist prior to 2006. What's up with that?

Can't find accurate information on the lineup. The band has only a ghostly presence on the internet and sparse information about their lineups, perhaps because their lineup changes so frequently that they don't even keep their Facebook page and promo pics up to date. The band's discography isn't even on Discogs, which is both odd as they're on a big label, and funny because nobody cares about them enough to add their albums to major sites. The current vocalist joined in 2003.

It's a side project of Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, and it doesn't sound like a symphonic black metal band? It's gotta suck.

Reminds me of this Immortal review that was deleted recently where the user expected Immortal (raw, kvlt black metal) and got Immortal (black metal) and bashed the shit out of it calling it technical.

It is a pretty lame album, though. The only songs I ever enjoyed were "Dawn of Solace" and "Into the Blue."

But that review is pretty awful. He makes MY reviews look good.

God/Odin/Satan/etc help us if a side project of Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica was symphonic black metal...

OzzyApu, are you going to do the remaining Sepultura albums? I like seeing negative reviews for their later albums. :)

I just submitted one for Roorback. Oh yeah, I'm going all the way to the latest. We've all read the Sepultura hate for the latter albums on the forum, but there aren't as many immortalizing it in reviews for those albums. Don't expect complete hate for Dante and on, as they do get "better". It's the 1996-2003 where the real trash exists.

Maybe "better", but still boring as hell. I haven't heard Dante, but I've heard A-Lex and it was a real yawn.

Looking over my Reverence "When Darkness Calls" review, I must say I'm ashamed. There's a lot of typos and errors. If a mod just wants to reject it, I'll resubmit a fixed version. Thanks in advance!

That's because it's not even approved yet. Just copy what you typed, delete it, and make a new one.

Just edit the review after a mod accepts it (unless the typos are so bad that the review is unacceptable in its present state).

Ah, gotcha. I think you were more merciful on that album than most would be, haha. Just about everyone I've seen doesn't even count that as an Abnegation release, but I'm guessing that was your introduction to the band so you're probably a lot less biased.

Yeah, I haven't heard any of the stuff they released prior to that album. I just stumbled across the cover art for Verses of the Bleeding one day and thought "HOLY SHIT BRUTAL GORE SHIT THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME!" Were I to rewrite my review, I'd probably give it a lower score, in the 30-40 range. I was rather timid about giving things really low ratings early on.

Thanks for the discovery, their early stuff is some solid NYHC in the vein of shit like Agnostic Front and Merauder. I'm not even going to bother listening to that album though :-P
