1. Doom Metal
In the vein of YOB, Electric Wizard circa Come My Fanatics... and Dopethrone era and Conan; power trio line-up with a heavy as hell sound. Groovy rhythmic sections and awesome riffs

2. Sludge-Doom Metal
Grown to really enjoy the sludge/doom combinations of bands like Weedeater, Bongzilla, Dopethrone, etc. Lots of filthy distorted guitars, snarled vocals, and grooving bass lines.

3. Stoner/Psychedelic Rock with Doom Influences
In the vein of bands like Samsara Blues Experiment, Elder, Kyuss, Sungrazer, The Machine. I really enjoy the longer jam sessions in Elder and Samsara, while the bass focused stoner and psychedelicness of Sungrazer and The Machine I would feel would integrate with each other perfectly.

4. Retro Rock with Blues Influences
Pretty much in the vein of Graveyard, but with some early Black Sabbath influences and a large emphasize on the blues. Main reason for this would be to try doing vocals as I feel that I would be a better retro rock/blues vocalist than a metal vocalist.

Somebody start a band with me!

I wouldn't mind doing something like that...
Some "occult-themed" 60's styled psychedelic stuff like Coven (unintentionally hilarious vocals* and all):

1. Atmospheric/Melodic Doom Metal, I love that shit. I would want to sing and play piano/organ, because clean vocals and keyboards combine really well with the riffs in that kind of metal.

2. Without a doubt, Sludge Metal. It looks like a lot of fun to play live. Tons of feedback, tons of screaming, heavy and dirty riffs, and plenty of energy.

3. Drone Metal, just because it's so incredibly intense.

Blackened Psychadelic Stoner/Doom band. Super big wallz of Fuzz with a rocking groove (mid paced) with slightly distorted shrieks. The occasional tremelo riff would make it's way into the fold and would have 4-7 minute long songs with a somewhat progressive writing style. Guitar solos welcomed.

Something in the vein of a combined Black/Death/Thrash but with Doom and also just slightly experimental. Similar to earlier Samael but with Sodom/Kreator/Minotaur/Usurper like thrashiness and Cathedral doom/stoner rock as well in addition to early Candlemass-like doom elements also - perhaps just a touch of the 70s Occult Rock thingy also. Acoustic Guitars/Keyboards/Organs would be used but only for enhancement, not as lead instruments. Lyrical themes would deal with the Occult/Halloween/Macabre Myths/Abandoned Places but also Violent Nature as well (think Immortal but during Spring/Summer).

Also, purely for fun, a folk/ambient thing similar to Vond/Mortiis/(early) Ulver/Wongraven.

So, is Doom just insanely popular right now, or is it mostly just really popular on here?

Seems like everyone has said "Doom" "Stoner" and/or "Sludge" at at least one point in this thread, and the few who didn't said, like, Power Metal or something.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I definitely did. There is a fair amount of love on the board and we seem to be in one of those weird points where doom and doom-influenced bands are getting noticed more in the scene at large. You just can't say no to doom.

Of course, it helps that one of the most present (and beloved) figure of the board is a major doom fan!

that's me by the way!

Anyway, ideal band for me: progressive doom/death/psychedelic with dual lead guitars!

Grind/mince a la Unholy Grave & Agathocles, with a pronounced Bolt Thrower influence via mid-paced riffage, but with a production like Onward To Golgotha. I'd handle the guitar and possibly vocals.

If not that, then basically just another Crossed Out worship band, because Crossed Out rule.

I'd really like to be able to make music in the vein of MBV's Loveless, or even shit like Godspeed but I'll never be anywhere near that good at guitar.

I guess there's been a decent amount of stuff happening in the "Doom/Stoner/Sludge" world... New Saint Vitus album, a major Sleep re-issue, Black Sabbath getting together, etc...

Not that Doom isn't indeed awesome, but maybe that has some small part in it.

And sorry, I live nowhere near NJ, mcmuffins, otherwise I'd totally take you up on the offer (though I really can't play anything very well at all). A fun band idea seems like good motivation to practice... In fact, having no one to play with probably has a lot to do with my lack of skill: No motivation. I don't really like to play alone. I haven't got the skill to play multiple instruments or multi-track very well.

done rambling.

Kevin Shields laid a lot of groundwork, and he's really good at what he does. he's not a hack musician either, but Shoegaze/textural guitar stuff isn't necessarily difficult to play and still sound good.

My point is, you could probably manage it... I think the hardest part for me in trying to do bedroom Shoegaze is getting way too caught up in making pretty sounds that go nowhere... (see previous post)... Shoegaze is easy to play, but kind of difficult to form into something cohesive, especially when you have no one around to jam with or help you keep time while you're jerking off for 30 minutes with a guitar and 30 pedals (still, I like doing that).

I miss having a standalone reverb unit, BTW... and a guitar with more than 3 surviving strings (I'm a cheapskate, so fuck buying more until there aren't any left!!!) :(

2nd one, definitely better to be in a hybrid that's willing to try out new sounds and isn't tied down into one specific subset of the metal sub-genre, in this case black metal.
